Location: Barksdale Air Force Base (BAFB) is located in the northwest corner of Louisiana, (Bossier Parish) Bossier City, Louisiana. The largest city is Shreveport located just across the Red River from Bossier City in Caddo Parish. The base is two and half hours east of Dallas, Texas and three hours west of Jackson, Mississippi. Child Development Centers:  The Child Development Center (CDC) accommodates 190 children, 6 weeks to 5 years of age with a wide array of programs including extended day care, preschool, hourly care and other programs. A waiting list for weekly care exists for all age groups at this time. The CDC is open Monday - Friday, 6:15 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Currently, there is no annual registration fee and fees are based on family income. Fees may be paid weekly or bi-weekly. Individuals with PCS orders to Barksdale should stop by their local CDC and obtain an Application for Child Care, DD Form 2606. Forward the completed application and a copy of PCS orders for advanced placement on the waiting list. Your effective date on this list is the postmark on your application. You will receive a confirmation of placement on the list and an estimate of the expected wait.

Schools:  Both Bossier Parish and Caddo Parish offer public education for grades K-12. Programs include special programs for the gifted, the learning disabled and the physically challenged. Those living in Bossier City will attend schools in Bossier Parish, and those living in Shreveport will attend schools in Caddo Parish. Caddo schools have almost 45,000 students and 15:1 ratio of students per staff teacher. There are 12 high schools, 15 middle schools and 48 elementary schools. Bossier Parish schools have almost 19,000 students and 16:1 ratio of students per teacher. Youth Services: The BAFB Youth Center is a modern 19,922 square foot, state-of-the-art center with three activity rooms, large game room, dance room, music room, TV lounge, computer/study room, gymnasium, kitchen, snack bar and patio.

Airman and Family Readiness Center: Airman and Family Readiness Center, 318-456-8400, supports Barksdale AFB Readiness by assisting families and single military members adapt to the demands of Air Force life. To accomplish this mission, they offer a variety of educational programs and services that are open to all military employees and their families including active duty, reservists, guardsmen and DoD civilians.
