Although mansions dotting the California hills are nothing new, Hearst Castle is a mansion like no other.

Hearst Castle was the private residence of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst, and is a magnificent mansion. Now showcased within one of California’s most visited state parks, it is a must-see to end all must-sees, an eye-popping extravaganza with a 165-room castle, 127 acres/51 hectares of terraced gardens, fountains, and pools, and, to top it all off, wraparound views of the sunny Central Coast.

There are several tours available - make sure not to miss the fantastic pools. I personally like hearing the history and stories, which the tour guides were quite good. A personal favorite story was one that took place in the great dining hall, that also had a huge (and very hot) fireplace. Hearst was famous for elaborate dinner parties, and sometimes guests liked to stay on a bit too long & wore out their welcome. So for dinners, Hearst seated guests he wanted to leave (or just didn't like) further and further from the head table - and eventually right next to the fireplace, where they sweated it out during dinners - haha!

Very fun day trip - excellent trip for visiting family as well. Christmas is particularly nice - as the castle is all decked out.
