We have a new principal this year and she's turning it into a military school. She came from a high school and she's already telling our children to grow. Some are 6,7, and 8 year olds. The higher level assistant principal doesn't speak. She looks at parents like me are beneath her.

I was at field day today and the principals are very rude. They don't speak to parents. I don't feel welcomed at this school at all. They are not friendly and welcoming. The vice principals look you straight in the eyes and don't speak. So rude!!! Teachers and students bully and nothing happens.

Principal is not visible, teaching methods are not super effective, mudic only 30 minutes once per week, art only once per week, as a parent I don't feel welcome in the school. It is difficult to get school to help a student that struggles.

This school is horrible. They will punish the students and put office referrals in their records but they won't do anything to teachers who bully children. I don't agree with that. Teachers should be punished just like the students. My child was bullied by his teachers and I had to put him in therapy because of it. Nothing happened to the teachers and they laugh in your face like it's funny. No respect at this school.

I have had two grandchildren attend DPES and have met all their teachers and participated in many of their events. Both grandchildren have done outstanding and continue to lead in their peer groups. The teachers have all been outstanding in their training, preparation and presentation of subject material. The children enjoy going to school for the learning experience. I can't think of any other school I would rather have my grandchildren attend.

This is a school with some phenomenal teachers but the attendance policies are a bit ridiculous! The students are allowed three unexused tardies or three unexcused absences (there's a 3 day grace period to turn in an excused note) until they are given detention, even the first graders are included in this policy. This doesn't seem like much until you factor in that a parents written excuse doesn't necessarily excuse a tardy/an absence. This school requires notes from doctors appointments which is easy to do if you know about this policy before you get a letter a month later from the tardy officer.

After reading all of the reviews about Daniel Pratt ES, we had a hard time deciding if we should rent a home zoned for this school for our 10 month stay in Alabama. We decided it couldn't be that bad for one year. Well, it's been one the most stressful years in our life! We have family members in the teaching profession and have always been huge teacher supporters! At this school, yes, you will find a handful of wonderful teachers trying the very best with what they have to work with at this school. If your child gets these teachers feel very very blessed! Both of our children who attended are good students, very well behaved, and are teacher pleasers. The daily hostile environment at this school turned one of our children into an emotional wreck; she now hates school and tears up at the very thought of going into the classroom to survive another day! Our older child is better able to roll with the punches and, although she didn't struggle as much, she has been able to give us a very good idea of what goes on at this school to create such a hostile environment. I could honestly write a book on the examples! Avoid if possible!!!

Look no further, military families or new families to Prattville! This school deserves 5 stars! Daniel Pratt is an excellent school!! The teachers my children have had are fantastic! One of my children has special needs and we have been very happy with the staff and specialists who have taken such good care of our son. The staff is very loving. The school is very safe. The front office staff is fabulous. Laurie, the receptionist, always has a smile. I wish we were staying longer so that our children could continue attending this great school!

Our child has been a student at DPES for 2 years and we have had no problems. Her teachers have all been fantastic. My main concern is with the lack of extracurricular classes. ie weekly art, music, technology & structured PE

I would not recommend this school because of the principal. He treats the parents very badly and threatens to have parents banned from the school if they have a disagreement with him. The vice principals are his little puppets. He has them trained well. The punishment is very cruel for 6,7, and 8 year olds. They assign them to in school suspension for small things. I feel like you can talk to children about some things the first time so that they can understand it was a bad choice. The school doesn't allow parents to do much at the school. I was able to go to my son old school whenever as long as I checked in at the front office.

We moved here from a small town in Ohio where my son had gone to school with the same kids since kindergarten. He entered the 6th grade when we moved here and he's happier than he's ever been! It's a fantastic school and I love how they encourage parent evolvement but don't force it down your throat. You're welcome to come eat lunch with your child everyday. There is a 0% tolerance for bullying. The teachers and staff are phenominal! We couldn't be happier.

This school has great teachers who do the best with the resources they're given, however they seem to be stressed beyond their limits. I am up there occasionally and I've overheard some of the teachers' concerns about teaching 4 classes. This 4 class change is new for the upper grades this year. The teachers' mentioned that they felt as if they weren't meeting their students' needs because of the shorter class periods, too much paperwork, and lack of rapport with their students. This is heartbreaking to hear as a parent. In the near future, my child will be in the upper grades. I worry if my child will be provided the best education with the demands of this type of schedule. It seems like the school is trying to run a junior high-type schedule in an elementary school setting. I really hope the administration of this school will consider some of their teachers' and parents' concerns in making future plans for our children's education and success. This is a great school. I definitely don't want to pull my child from it, but when it comes to your children, you want to do what's best for them.

We are millitary one parrent active one retired. This tour to Maxwell started with AWC. We have been here for three years. We have a 1st grader and a 6th grader this year. Previous school was in Greenville NC. First there are 1200 students at this school. 6th grade class size will be just over 30 students this year. As with any school, the learning environment for the child is teacher/parent dependent. Teachers do not have time to focus on each child. They do a good job of presenting the material in standard way, and the parent will need to help thier child with any issues. This was the same with our last school. The constant fund raising is anoying to parents and distracting to students but necessary to do with budget cuts. I've had very little interaction with the administration, but they seem cordial enough. The lacking arts programs are standard in all disticts that have to choose between comon core and "extra" courses. Recent rankings put Alabama 48th. If you are comming from the North East, or the Mid west you may be dissapointed, but as compared to other schools in the south then Daniel Pratt does an excellent job.

During this past year 2013/2014 school year, my daughter has had the best experience ever at DPES. My daughter struggled in previous years at the school and had teachers who did not take time out to help her when she needed help. This past year in fifth grade, my daughter had the teacher by the name of, Ms. Myers who taught (math, science and history) and she was God sent to my daughter. She took time out to make sure that not only was my daughter getting the information but that ALL of her peers were getting it. I have another child who will be entering fifth grade next year and we were hoping that he would have Ms. Myers as well but we heard from other disappointed parents that she was moved to special education for some "co-teaching" thing the school has decided to do this 2014/2015 school year. This is very disappointing to see wonderful classroom teachers to be taken away from children who are average students just as my daughter and son. We are a military family and we have now decided to homeschool our children for the simple reasons of DPES is always changing too much (teachers being moved and inconsistence of administration).

My kids didn't learn ANYTHING new until Dec and have been watching movies since ACTs. Mediocre teachers co-teach with yellers or someone who refuses to answer students' questions, replying, "I already explained that! Go sit down!" This sort of duo is common here. DPES front doors remain unlocked with no buzz-in system. Office staff (generally parent volunteers not at the desk, who NEVER answer the phone) can't SEE the doors, so anyone can walk into the building. Meanwhile, kids are ALWAYS in lock-down in their classrooms. Volunteering, unless it's to make $ for the PTA, is discouraged. A military wife was asked to correct papers in the hallway when she insisted on coming in. School is cancelled constantly after the superintendent leaves frantic-sounding messages saying they won't endanger the lives of students. You won't change your child's ride-home option without a hassle on such days! Teacher emails are ignored. "No child left behind" means faster- and slower-moving groups elsewhere, but here everyone is held back, even after grasping the info. It's been the throw-away year everyone told us it would be when we moved to AL! We're getting out of the Prattville ISD!

I LOVE DPES! My children, 2nd grade& 5th grade, LOVE DPES! The teachers & staff there are wonderful! In response to some of the previous posts, admin at DPES are more then willing to assist parents with anything! We have been there for 3 years and have not had a problem with admin at all. I think our principal is more then willing to answer questions and return phone calls if the questions require an answer.He is a busy man, therefore if the questions asked can be found in the handbook or on the website, you may not get a call back, and I think that is reasonable.Our school lacks funds for technology, therefore there are fundraisers that students are asked to participate in to better their school.That is reasonable. Snack Store:I have been in there and can assure you, it is all nutritious. Just like lunchroom, snack store by law has to have nutritious food provided for purchase. If you do not think the snacks there are healthy enough for your child, by all means pack them a snack from home! I only gave 4 stars because in any school there is always room for improvement!! I wish there was an APT meeting once a month or so opened up to ALL parents. Other then that, I LOVE DPES!

ACSC / War College Students be warned. This school is terrible. The principal is the big sheriff in town with a horrible temper. He must be threatened by military because treats the families that have moved into this school district to be a part of this community, for this school specifically - terribly. Do not move into this school district, do not place your children in the care of the monster at the head of this school. My daughter's class has had 2 other families besides us dis-enroll to home school for the remainder of their time in Prattville.

As a teacher at this school, I understand many of the recent poor reviews our school has gotten. Our admins keep piling stuff on us, we're doing the bookkeeper's job and the janitor's job, and are asked to put on a show for everything. Our extra tasks have taken away a lot of our planning time, which should be used for planning meaningful lessons and grading papers. Instead, we spend a lot of that time doing bookkeeping, attending meetings, and getting other required tasks completed. Parents, please know that we want the best for your children, and are trying our best. I also don't understand the constant fundraisers and money-making events. Enough is enough! I do love this school and our faculty, but there is a definite need for improvement. I'd like to go back to main reason I do what I do; TEACH and TOUCH LIVES! Military families, please don't "run" away from this school; have faith, do your research, and get facts straight. DPES is a wonderful school with some amazing teachers who are willing to give your children the best education they can; they just need some support.

First I can't not believe how much money they ask for! Not only do they ask for money but children who donate (or parents that can afford to) get to go to a party. Rewarding children for giving your school money is pathetic, they are there to learn not to be used. They only have recess/PE once a day. They call it PE but it is not an organized PE like most are use to. They basically have the kids run a couple laps and then the rest of the time the kids just play on the playground. They do not have Art, and music is only twice a month, and if your child's library book is late they charge .05 cents a day! Everything they do is to make money, they are running a business and not a school.They have a snack shop where they sale overpriced sugar/fat snacks but don't think about bringing your child fast food for lunch because they won't let you even if its a wendy's salad. When we moved here I asked to speak to the principal, wrote a note, waited for a call, he never called. If you are military you are not going like it here, I am now homeschooling-never thought I would be and this past month I have meet 2 other women who are doing the same, all pulled their kids from Daniel Pratt.

I have been very happy with this elementary school, both of my girls go to this school and I am so pleased with the quality of school this is. They have had great teacher and their grades are excellent. The teachers and staff are wondferful.

Daniel Pratt Elementary is an absolutely amazing school. They've certainly set the bar high on my children's future schools as we move throughout the Air Force World. The head principal is a wonderful leader and is an asset to the community to which he serves. The asst. principals are just as wonderful and responsive to your needs throughout the entire year. The teachers, there are no words to express how over the top amazing they really are! The one on one, the group setting, and the instruction is absolutely creative, fun, and excititng! My children have blossomed socially and educationally more this year than any other! In my opinion you can not go wrong by choosing this wonderful school for your children!

We were here for ACSC so have only had one year's experience with DPES. A lot of reviews say this school is awful. I personally don't agree. They are dealing with too many kids, and have cut several programs like art and some music. The fundraising is truly never ending, i am so tired of being asked for money, but i understand why they need them. My daughter is in 2nd grade and i hate that they have no recess. the snack shack is purely a money maker for them, the snacks are all non-nutritive. However, having said that my daughter's teacher Ms. Mims, has been FABULOUS!! She never raises her voice, she's extremely organized and creative. my daughter is doing very well in her studies and constantly comes home with excited stories of the science experiments they've done and the art projects they've made. She promptly responds to any email i send her and even took my daughter out to dinner when she reached her goal of achieving 100 AR points for reading this year. I volunteer there once a week and have always been treated cordially by the office staff and told repeatedly that they appreciate my time. All in all, i think this is a decent school that just has room for improvement

This is our first year at DPES and I have been more than pleased. Coming from a small town school surrounded by friends that he grew up with, my son has adjusted here amazingly well. I love that the school has the option of email notifications. I am at the school more than once a week substituting. Im seeing things from as close as I can get to the inside without actually teaching, and I have no complaints. The teachers are friendly and seem to care about the students. I wanted to leave a positive comment because it seems everyone only takes the time to leave bad reviews.

We moved to our house just to be in this school. It was absolutely awful! In one instance the teacher gave an assignment and 1/2 of the class did it wrong, so she ridiculed them publically. We asked her if since that many did it wrong perhaps she didn't explain it well. She said, maybe yes, but never apologized. Another teacher consistently said one thing and did another. Another teacher could not explain what the standardized test scores meant. Children are not permitted to eat any kind of candy, okay that's a good thing, but then why can they go to the snack bar and buy high calorie snacks? We pulled our children out and homeschooled them. I recommend you do the same.

If you are considering this school for your child, please take my advice...run, don't walk from this disaster of a school. The principal is lazy, unresponsive, and very dismissive of parents. Even the teachers who are remotely caring and/or active do not stand a chance when up against the lacking principal, school board, and superintendent. It is a shame (and a joke) that this school is considered superior to the other schools in Prattville. Ultimately, I would choose ANY school over this one.

DPES has some GREAT teachers, some are there for the right reasons and others are there for a paycheck and summer off. Its not DPES that is failing its the school system. Most of the staff at DPES have become puppets to the system and forget they are able to stand up for these kids. Parents that do nothing but complain are no better. Military or not we are all parents fighting a war here. A war for a better education for our kids. I want not only a good education for my child but the ones that will follow them. Do your own research parents and don't just complain. Write a letter, gather information and make a difference!

We are a military family. We have heard that Daniel Pratt is the best elem school. We are truly disappointed. This school is very, very far behind. We know that they are a public school but I would rather have my child be able to have an art class, music class or constant recess time than waste money on school dances. They have verbal rules that were given to me that were not enforced. The front office told me that I cannot walk onto school grounds to pick up my child. Once I left the office I found several parents waiting outside school doors for their child. They seem to make up rules & guidelines as they go. They enforce them only to certain people. Make sure you are the right color or you will get the run around & the rudeness that they can dish out. Very unprofessional & sad. They like to point out the "rules" to only a few people & let others get away with ignoring them. It is a place where some of the old racial southern ways are not quite dead. Be wary. We are sending our child to a private school that offers a much better curriculum & attitude. We would rather give her a positive learning environment.

Where do I start?? The only good thing I have to say about the school is the teaching aspect of the school otherwise, whoah! SOAR for the smaller kids who are trying to figure out what they did wrong that day or maybe it is the teacher not watching the child is sick and needs to be sent home or maybe the teacher was told something in private and she yells to your child about it or lets get in the childs face and scare them or they threaten the child they will be punish is they tell the parent something other than what the teacher wants them to say.Hmmm..

We are a military family and I have two children in Daniel Pratt. We have been attending Daniel Pratt for three years and I have been nothing but impressed with both my children's teachers and their academic success. This is a very large school and maybe in the future the district can be rezoned or add another elementary school in this part of town. Having said that, the teachers and staff do their best with the resources they have. Mrs. McNider is an outstanding administrator as the Vice Principal. I have been very unimpressed with the principal, so thankfully, Mrs. McNider fills in where he is lacking. The principal is almost never there. You will not find any school where 100% of the parents are pleased. This school is a really good school, my children are honor roll and they love it here. I encourage you to come visit the school before you rush to judgement. I, too, volunteer at the school as often as I can.

Daniel Pratt is not suitable for any child. I volunteered weekly and quickly realized that it was not academically, socially, or emotionally suitable for children. In 2009, I personally witnessed: -- A teacher challenge students, stating You want a piece of me? Come on, which of of you wants a piece of me! , another screaming in a child s face, and so on. -- Incorrect use of English. -- The principle's daily welcome statement This can be a good day or bad day, the choice is yours --A detention box in the office where they would punish children by having them sit in it all day with nothing to do. --I witnessed racism between children, which went unaddressed by witnessing staff members. -- PE, large groups would sit on the bleachers and watch smaller groups have PE in 15 min. shifts, or weather permitting have a free for all recess outside. I found the school s environment to be so disturbing that I moved my children midyear leaving my husband behind to finish his assignment. If considering Daniel Pratt s school I highly recommend a trip to the school before considering enrolling a child here; show up without an appointment and stick around awhile.

Daniel Pratt is touted as being a good school. Let's talk. My children have attended it for several years and I've spent significant time volunteering in the school, so I do feel like I can speak about the school. Class sizes are large. Kids do not get to have recess, but there is time for each class to go to the snack room and buy things like chips, gummies and slushies. There's no art program anymore (as of the 2011-12 school year), but even when there was, there were no supplies to use except what the children brought. Music is nearly nonexistent (2x per month). The motivation program "SOAR" teaches kids that going to detention is no big deal and they are encouraged to go, to earn back any points they may have lost and it rewards kids for adequate behavior. The school is dirty. The bathrooms stink and many of the classrooms have mice. As a parent, I don't see everything, but what I do see indicates to me that administration doesn't support the teachers like it should, making it harder for the teachers to concentrate on what they should. On the positive side, there are still many good teachers there who do try to teach. However, I'm very relieved we're moving this summer.

We are a military family and thank God we just stayed there for a year only. This is the WORST SCHOOL ever my daughter been to. Every week they will come up with field trips, any activity that concerns money. Fields trips and activity that don't have any connection with their studies. The teaching is poor. Their SOAR POINTS AND DETENTION are just money making coz at the end of their quarter they will have an activity an parents will be the one to pay. VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED. THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE A PARENTS TEACHERS MEETING AND IF YOU HAVE CONCERNS THEY CAN'T ADDRESS IT. A LOT OF EXCUSES .

DPES is not a bad school. The staff are dealing with 1,264 students. They don't have time to make every parent feel warm and fuzzy. I know that there are good and bad teachers here. Luckily my daughter got all the good ones. We moved to AL from CA where my daughter struggled with reading, writing, math... everything. At DPES her 4th grade teacher Mr. Guin, told her one day he was proud of her for keeping her desk clean. That simple "I'm proud of you" changed her life, she started actually caring about her school work and went from C's to A's. The traditional down to earth teaching methods made sense to my daughter and she started to "get it". I worried that she was getting the A's because the work was so easy at DPES and that she would again struggle when we moved to our current nationally top ranked school district. Not only does she not struggle but she was actually ahead in some areas. If you're military family, chances are you are not going to love DPES. But don't be afraid of it, it's not a bad school.

Thankful we are only here for the year. No art program, music twice a month, P.E. is daily, but is mostly a recess. The teachers are nice and academics are average. There are no conferences at any point in the year. Parental involvement is very hard and I don t feel welcome. They use a behavior modification program called SOAR. If your child behaves you get to pay money for them to attend parties and field trips. The last SOAR activity was a trip to see a movie for $10 and no parental chaperones were allowed. If you did not want to pay or disagreed with the no chaperones policy, your child could go to detention instead. The school is very focused on this program at the cost of never highlighting any academic achievement. I guess bad behavior must be rampant at the school for such a focus to be placed on this program. Those of us that have high performing students, I am told there is no recognition until the end of the year. Students clean the lunchroom by washing tables, sweeping, and pick up garbage off the floor. All the military families I know are dissatisfied as well. However, I am told this is the best for this area unless you go to private school route or homeschool.

This is an average school with lots of hard working teachers. Most of the front office staff is always polite and welcoming. However, the principal is unprofessional and extremely rude. I had a meeting with this man about parking in the front parking lot and walking my child to the door (this kind of activity is frowned upon here at Daniel Pratt). What I got was a good-old-boy cuss out. I was informed that if I choose to continue to do this legal action will be taken against me. I was also reminded that my child does not have to attend Daniel Pratt. Be aware that if you choose to voice your opinion about any of their policies you will be quickly put in your proper place.

We have had a mixed experience at Daniel Pratt. As with most schools, there are good teachers and no so good teachers. We were lucky in that my children have some of the better teachers. My impression is that the curriculum is below average, particularly for the upper levels. There is no levelized learning, in other words, all students in a grade level learn the same material at the same pace. This is frustrating for high and low level learners. The students have PE everyday but there is no art class, no foreign langugage classes, no recess with lunch, and music meets every other week.

I have had issues from the beginning with this school! I registered my daughter during the summer (when we moved here), and the lady at the front desk was very rude! I couldn't believe how unhelpful she was. There are so many parents and students in and out of the school, it feels like my child gets lost in the shuffle. Both of the vice-principals are know-it-alls who treat the parents very much like outsiders; yet, nobody there has an issue with asking for volunteers or money! The individual teachers are nice enough, and the principal is easy to deal with (when he's around). But, like I said, both of the vice-principals (especially the older one) are WAY too "large and in charge"...

We were a military family only here for one year. Didn't think sending our children to DPES would be a problem for one year. Now it is too late, I deffinitey regret it. Would have lived on base for the DOD school. Daniel Pratt has too many kids and not enough teachers. Teachers are not responsive to parental concerns. There is no real art or music program. The kids have a so called PE class everyday, but it is really supervised recess. The teachers actually encourage the kids not to come to school on 1/2 days, very sad. If your child is above average student, they will be bored. If they are average or below average they will be further behind when you leave. If your child has dyslexyia it is not recognized as a special need here.

DPES is a great school with some really great teachers! Even some of the new teachers are better than those who have been teaching for years. The teacher my child has always updates her website to keep us in the know and seems to deeply care for each and every child in her class. If you are moving to the area, Daniel Pratt is the place to go!

I am a white college educated individual from a well to do family. My children are Caucasian, Native American, and African American. This school in fact displayed a serious case of profiling as well as racism towards one of my children.

Enrolling our children in DPES was the worst parental decision we could have. Our children have experience racisim from many of the staff and teachers. We where warn by several parents who had removed their child, because of their own personal concerns, howeve we wanted to give the school and chance, and to our surprise they where correct. Certain student are treatly unfair (racism) and many of the staff and teacher are very unreasonable and extremely hard to talk with, very one sided, when confronted with the truth, all discussion are ended. We would never recommended DPES to any parent looking to challenge their child educationally and socially. What a nightmare and very sadden by the teachers and staff racist attitudes!

In response to the last post, DPES is a great school. Snack is held in the hallways or outside, depending upon the weather. Some classes can have snack in the lunchroom, depending on the time of day. Snack is normally not held in classrooms in order to keep the rooms clean and bug-free. PE classes go outside almost every day, weather permitting. There are 5 PE coaches to accomodate for the large PE classes. Classes are divided up among each coach. Art and Music are consistent, with the exception of the two weeks for SAT testing. Art and Music teachers even adjust their schedule to include every single class, even on rare four day weeks. DPES consists of a friendly staff dedicated to their job. I am proud my child is receiving his education at DPES.

Our children are in Daniel Pratt for one year only and we are glad. This school does little to challenge any child and only covers the bare minimum in curriculum. In addition, there is never ANY recess, snack is eaten on the floor of the hallway in some grades (with the bugs and spray), art and music are only half a year long once a week (and not consistently), and PE, which is every day, is a 'class' of 220 childen in the gym at one time. Needless to say, it is difficult to teach or do any fun games with a group this size. They very rarely go outside for PE and of course not at recess, which is annoying since it is usually nice weather. My children come home restless and itching to play outside. I think my children will have to 'catch up' some at our next school.
