We were so excited for our child to attend PKS, but also nervous because we suspected they had autism. But we had pursued an evaluation already and already had their IEP rolling, so we figured we were doing the best we could to set them up for a great year.
Our child ended up not getting as much support as we'd hoped. When we explained their sensory needs to their teacher, the response was "I don't think they have sensory needs." It was implied our parenting wasn't firm enough. The materials we provided for proactive support went mostly unused because our child did not seek them out independently, though with them being so young, I'm not sure they really had the ability to do this yet. Most behavior struggles our child had were categorized as "defiance" and the main focus was punishment or loss of privileges. This ended up affecting our child's self-esteem a lot; they hyper-fixated on behavior tracking and started believing there wasn't a way for them to be good enough in school.
On more than one occasion, our kid was injured by others and teachers didn't notice, but they did notice the response (lying on the ground and crying, running away...and eventually, pushing or shoving) and categorized that as defiance.
In the second half of the year, our child did get diagnosed with autism as suspected. In the IEP meeting, more supports were promised, like visits to a sensory room. This did not end up happening, I was told by the para, because teachers were busy administering tests.
There were still a lot of things we loved about PKS. Our child learned a lot there. But if you believe your child may be neurodivergent: get them on a waitlist to get an evaluation ASAP, and try to get the IEP process rolling. Also speak with administration about your concerns. We talked with the principal before the school year about our concerns over teacher placement, and were told "oh, you can't go wrong with any teacher at PKS!" And we believed it to be true. It's a great school; most teachers are probably great for most kids. But I wish I'd said, "Yes, but some teachers are uniquely equipped to connect and succeed with special-needs kids. Please take their disability into account."
It's in everyone's best interest for a kid with special needs to be in a class that is the best fit. Although our kid's teacher seemed great for most average kids, they had a hard time understanding our kid and supporting them, and this made the school year more difficult for everyone.

We love Prattville Kindergarten school. My daughter loves her school and she have been learning a lot there. Her skills definitely got improved. She had already a good base from going to preschool programs before, so definitely helped her to succeed there. Mrs Ezell is a great teacher.

My son was in an inclusion classroom and the class was filled with children of different races, religions and abilities. Every one of them was challenged at their individual level and differences were respected.

What a great little school! Coming from out of town I was a bit hesitant about the education system in Alabama, but Prattville kindergarten exceeded my expectations around every corner. The community of kindergarten teachers and support staff are phenomenal and made my child’s year there wonderful.

The entire school is kindergarten. My child received a ‘homework’ packet once a week with a few short exercises, sight words, letters etc. and a monthly reading log. The homework was appropriate length for kindergarten and reinforced the basic skills he was learning.

Mrs. Thompson is a phenomenal teacher! She set the bar very high for us with any future teachers. She was organized, her expectations were challenging and fair and she kept the parents well-informed.

If your child has separation anxiety the Marijac Hunt is not the teacher for them. I think she started off being an attentive teacher but as she has had her own children and years has passed, so has that characteristic. She has not reached out to my son once, not with a hug, a pat on the shoulder or even a kind word. She comes off as cold hearted.

My second son completed a wonderful year at PKS in 2012. The Principal reminded the children daily to make it a great day, or not - the choice was theirs. This prompted wonderful school to home conversations at the dinner table as discussions led to celebrations for good choices and helpful hints for others. I also felt that the Principal's high visibility throughout the day contributed to a safe environment and gave parents confidence in the fact that she knew her school, faculty, staff, parents, and students. As she monitored the halls in the mornings, she greeted students by name, gave them compliments, smiles and hugs before sending them on their way. My son loved to wear his NASCAR jacket because Mrs. Riddle always told him the jacket was her favorite! She monitored dismissal at the front doors in the afternoon, even sometimes directing traffic herself. Because this school had such wonderful leadership, the day ran smoothly. Great teachers delivered challenging lessons and provided opportunities for social growth. I know my son is well prepared for 1st grade. Thank you PKS and Mrs. Riddle for developing and maintaining a safe, nurturing, loving, and clean environment!

I have a child who had to make the difficult transition not only from relocating but then shortly there after starting Kindergarten. It has only been a half a semester but so far my child loves school! The staff has always been very pleasant when I pop in or attend class functions. My Childs teacher is AWESOME Now these are kindergarteners and they may play ruff but from what I experienced from the school and the bus no bullying allowed! Great school, Awesome teacher, fabulous souther style hot lunches! I'm glad my child is happy and thriving!

My son attends PKS and he loves it! Although it is early in the year, I can already see how much he's learned. He has a wonderful, patient teacher whom I can tell truly cares for the children in her class. The school administration is nothing but nice everytime I visit the school. I was nervous having my first child start Kindergarten, but have found this transition easy for him (and me)! My son has a food allergy and the nurse and staff have been very accomodating and overly cautious at all times, which is such a relief and comfort to me.

I had a lot of reservations about sending my son to Kindergarten as he's been slow in developing his social skills as well as other areas. He barely made the age cut-off (being one of the very youngest in kindergarten) to add to my concern. I was very upfront with his teacher regarding his development and areas of weakness, she was grateful for the information and was confident she would be able to work with him. My son adores his teacher and had the BEST time at school. It was a wonderful learning opportunity for him...and me!

Im not sure why this is listed as a preschool when it is a Kindergarten. But we have had a great year at PKS! Our older children attended Kinder in a different state and both had issues with not being fully ready for the transition to 1st grade. However our youngest daughter has thrived here and we feel very confident in her continuing to 1st grade. The teachers and staff are all amazing and very friendly and helpful. They really encourage parental involvement in the class and on field trips. Our year with PKS has been a wonderful experience!
