This is a great school! They are challenging for students but also supportive and helpful.

Houston Academy is a fantastically rigorous school. I am an HA alum, and I know my status in college is all thanks to the preparedness I received at HA. However, diversity and different ideologies are not respected. This school has an insane issue with bullying and harassment, as the students do it under the radar. The school also has a major problem with following through on their “Zero Tolerance” rules. If you are a student with powerful parents, a long time HA family member, or come from money, you will receive prioritization over the other students. This is the MAJOR fault with HA culture. I would not recommend sending your children here if you prioritize their mental health.

The children are expected to act like little robots taking away any form of individualism… This school has a huge problem with mob mentality bullying

Teachers - and principal are not educated about Covid procedures. I am very disappointed for students who have no choice but to follow the instructions of these administrators. My students will transfer next year.

Our experience has been a great disappointment. Students are far from top priority. Instead, money and social status of the parent openly top the list. Parents who struggle financially to send their children to Houston Academy will themselves, as well as their child or children, not be socially accepted by staff or students.

Most teachers at this school are effective. Those teachers that have families and/or are privileged enough to make substantial financial contributions to the school are not held accountable for actions of any kind they choose including those that are unethical.

Posted: March 29, 2018

Bullying of students that are not part of the click and are from families that are not able to provide financial support to the school beyond tuition is ignored and encouraged. This behavior is proliferated from staff and leaders of the school.

Posted: March 29, 2018

Leadership at Houston Academy has a much greater concern for financial contributions to the school than for the well being of the students.

Posted: March 29, 2018

Students with learning differences are not made to feel welcome by staff or fellow students.

Posted: March 29, 2018

Houston Academy has an extremely severe bullying issue.

Our school's honor code instills these character traits in the students.

On balance the teachers are very effective, but as in any school some are more effective than others.

My husband I and are from different school back grounds- one independent school educated and one public school educated. In the beginning, we decided to just see how it went with our children. Houston Academy won us over! The school is like an extended family. Our two children have made life long friends with not only classmates, but with the faculty and staff. The academics are challenging and engaging. Teachers are invested in their students. Not only do the teachers want to produce academically top-notch students, but well rounded, caring people who will lead us in the future. It is not uncommon to see teachers supporting the students outside of school in both school related and non- school related extra curricular activities. My husband and I have no doubts about the decision we made for our children to attend Houston Academy. It is the BEST school in the Wiregrass area.

Houston Academy is by far the strongest school in our area. However, there is definitely room for improvement!

This is our 11th year at Houston Academy with 2 children. We love the individual attention each child has been given. The teachers here are fantastic and you can tell they enjoy the subjects they teach. They look for ways to push my kids without stressing them out.
The administration is constantly finding ways to better the school and for the that I am grateful.

I have had no issues with bullying.

Every child learns differently and I feel that the teachers are always looking for a way to connect.

Each child (at different times) has struggled or needed extra help with some subject. Their teachers are always available to come in early or stay late as needed.

Honestly, I have no way to judge that because this is the only school we have been. However, my children play sports and are involved in numerous activities so homework hasn't slowed them down too much.

We are new to HA. The Director of Admissions and Upper School Guidance Counselor assisted us in the enrollment process in record time due to a very quick relocation to Dothan. After the second day of school, my son seemed relaxed and happy and already made friends. He really likes his classes and teachers. The small class sizes are amazing for individual attention. In addition to great, traditional academic classes, the elective choices are outstanding! My husband and I attended Open House and were so thrilled to meet teachers with such passion for their subject areas and for teaching. Additionally, they genuinely care about their students and want them to succeed. They come in to school early and will stay late to help students who need extra help. They offer a "Short Term" in the spring for students to take classes, take a class trip to Europe or visit colleges...or even do career exploration. If you are contemplating changing schools within Dothan or you are relocating to Dothan, I highly recommend Houston Academy! I know that my son will be well-prepared for college and life after graduating from HA. I have never seen a more dedicated faculty and staff. Thank you, HA!

I am a Houston Academy alum and now a parent. HA holds a special place in my heart. Not only is HA our school, it is also our home away from home. HA is a family! The students, teachers, administration, and parents all care for each other and expect the best. I was very prepared for college and beyond, and I thank HA for that. My children love school and are learning not only academics, but life lessons. HA is a fabulous school that we all call home.

I am so pleased that we have our son going to Houston Academy. The faculty and staff are wonderful and caring individuals who really do want to see your child succeed. The children are challenged and encouraged. Houston Academy prepares your child for college and has more seniors that go on to college than any other school in this area. I am so pleased to be a part of the HA family.

Houston Academy will always hold a special place in our family. The faculty and administration are exceptional! Both of my children have been given the tools to succeed in college and beyond! When considering that children spend at LEAST 8 hours a day away from their families, learning to be accountable adults with compassion and a hunger for learning - there is NO better place than Houston Academy! I love most that my children have grown to love Art and Music! I honestly feel they are given the best opportunity to explore, create and express who they are as individuals. For this reason, we will be forever grateful that both of our children attended Houston Academy!!!
