Im not sure why all the bad reviews. Second yr I've had a child at this school. While we have run into a couple of issues with a teacher here or there, it has been nothing too alarming and we have worked out out fine. Ms Hunter, the guidance counselor is great. She's very quick to respond and has been very supportive of getting a 504 in place for my child who has a chronic health condition. The principal has been very supportive as well. My child has loved a couple of their teachers a great deal both yrs and been indifferent to all but one teacher each yr that she didnt particularly like --but reasons again, were nothing alarming or hard to work out.
Child is learning, feels safe, and so-far I've felt the environment is healthy and helpful for her and I.

Only real complaint from kiddo is that sometimes the bathroom is a mess and smells like smoke.

My children have not had problems with other students but they have had problems with teachers. Dont get me wrong, my children have each had one or two teachers that have been supportive over the past couple of years but most are unhelpful, untrusting, belittling prison guards. They talk about students to other students, they dont have trust for students even when they have medical needs and notes on file, and they sigh and get angry with students when they ask for help. My student was asked if she felt supported at this school (last year by the previous VP) and my daughter said, No. She was then asked, Do you feel safe? My child said, No. My children have never had problems at school as they are typically very quiet, and Under the radar types of kids but they now have more insecurities and anxiety than ever in their lives. My children literally spent the first two months in tears every day after school. One of my children has an IEP and is on the autism spectrum and went nearly the entire school year without it being known to her teachers. Another child of mine has been told to do push-ups and participate in PE with a fractured elbow and a broken wrist. She was going to physical therapy and there was a note on file but teachers still dont believe her when she says shes in pain and cant do it. However, the way students dress is of utmost importance to them. Shirt must go past the bottom if in leggings, even if leggings are baggy and not see through. Again, autistic child in tears over being dress coded when she has sensory issues and cant wear jeans. T-shirt went to the middle of her bottom instead of all the way down so she got in trouble. She now wears oversized mens clothes even out of school because shes afraid shes going to give boys bad thoughts. Also, this school has a false belief that they have some kind of power and control over parents and feel free to berate them. This place is run like a prison. There is SO MUCH MORE but Im out of room to type. Ill just say that as a former middle school teacher and school counselor myself, I am disgusted by the way this school is run and the way they make students and parents feel. Never in my life have I experienced such incompetence and disregard for health and education of children. If you can, take your kids to a different school. This is not ok.

The middle school principal is the worst I have ever seen. She refused to put my daughter into Honors Math in 8th grade when she has always taken Honors classes and refuses to provide me with an answer why. She lied to me over the summer and said, which I have in an e-mail, that she changed the curriculum this year and eliminated Algebra 1 and Honors and in its place put a class called Accelerated Math, well today she told me she was incorrect and that they do have Algebra 1 and Honors but she is refusing to put my daughter into Honors after I have repeatedly requested this. She has also stopped allowing the middle school cheer team to compete this year, for no reason, we have asked why but she will not answer. These girls won Regionals last year for the firs time in the schools history, the girls and parents voted at the end of last year to have the team attend a UCA camp over the summer, which is mandatory to compete at Nationals. The girls attended the camp only to hear on the day before school started that the principal (Natalie Smith) made a personal unilateral decision to not allow them to compete at all. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING FOR WHAT USED TO BE AN ALMOST PRIVATE SCHOOL LIKE ENVIRONMENT.. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SCHOOL.

Vanallen is the worst leader I have met in my life. I can't understand why she would be allowed to continue running this school. Rather than looking bad for trying to cover up rumors of a student bringing harm to the school, she hung my daughter out to dry, calling her a prankster for being scared on her second day at this school. She doesn't listen to you speak, or concern herself with the truth. She only finds the evidence she wants to prove herself right, even when on a falsified document. Lawyer retained!

Words cannot describe the absolute hatred I have of this school. They took a bright 12 year old girl who was excited about school, and flaunted her in public as a prankster when she was scared, due to the improper handling of her "case". Defamation of the highest order.

My friends and I were constantly harrassed. I never went a night without staying up until 2am to do homework. This was easily the worst experience Ive ever had in a school.

Can't complain too much. Though there could be more cooperation between the academic teachers and the "activities" teachers. For example. My child is in band. Band students are "required to go to all football games" which take a ridiculous amount of time. every time there is a football game my child is up way to late completing homework. I would gladly keep them home to do their homework but we have to waste time and gas money dragging around to these ridiculous middle school football games.

School does not do bad, but it's really not the school that is doing that in this area. It's the parents. This area in my opinion has a very high caliber of parents for the most part compared to many other areas not only within this district, but in the country.

Leadership could be significantly better. Not much done in the past couple years, but just about every change or improvement made has been either useless or wrong. By far the most poorly performing aspect of the education is the school board itself. The people on the school board are nothing but a bunch of clueless talking heads making moronic decisions, one worse than the next. From staffing decisions, to architectural decisions, to academic decisions etc etc etc.

Bullies need to be dealt with like bullies. I have heard some stories about situations where kids are bullied and if the kid stand up for himself, or someone else stands up for himself, then they get the same punishment as the bully. Not the way to stop a bully.

I have my issues with the school, but I moved here specifically to get my child into the schools in this area even though my commute to work is 45 miles each way. Well worth it. It is a great school - but for a reason. For the time being I feel it is by far the best area with the best schools around. I have passed up on lucrative job offers in other parts of the country specifically to keep my child in school in this area and to live in this area. So, regardless of the gripes I might have, I feel this is the place to be.

It is the community that makes this school great and makes this school perform as well as it does. A great school is a byproduct of great students. Great students are a byproduct of great parents. It is not the other way around. So, the school performs well because it has students from great parents. I would easily score this school at least a 9/10. Thank you Hampton Cove parents (most of you).

My child is in her 3rd year here and I'm very pleased and she loves it. Great teachers and administrators, caring and supportive environment. I pulled my other child out of a magnet school because Hampton Cove Middle far exceeds the magnet school. Nothing but rave reviews from this happy parent. PTA is phenomenal, which helps make the school spectacular.

we just moved here 6 weeks ago and my son, who is in the 6 th grade has been bullied. Not by the other students, by the administration and teachers. The teachers rely too much on the laptops and do not communicate with the students at all about assignments. Teachers berate the kids in front of the class and teachers and the principles hand out silent lunches without notifying the students or parents beforehand. My son has come home crying almost everyday. My husband and I have called several times, each time we're told the problem will be taken care of and it never is. This is the worst school I've ever dealt with. I will be withdrawing my child and homeschooling. My other 2 kids have had great experiences with Goldsmith-Schiffman elementary and Huntsville High.

I agree with the bullying others have wrote about. It is a who knows who school and the kids can be very mean. The worse bullies are the "Popular" clicks that seem to get away with anything because the administrators are afraid of ruining the school reputation. The administrators will lie to cover themselves and protect the fabricated school reputation. It is a shame because this is a nice area and the school has good teachers. The school dress code is also a joke. The enforcement is based on favoritism.

This school has a big bulling problem. The states for the school look good because they do not write up fights. I know this for a fact my son has been in two fights and has never has in-school suspension or at home suspension. He got in both of those fights because he was being bullied. He tried telling teacher and that got him no where. As the teacher are almost bullies themselves. Now when I say that. They have some really good teachers but the also have some bad ones. The problem is the admin at this school does nothing about any of it they just turn a blind eye.

We love our middle school. We have great parent participation, and good communication with our teachers. Our principal makes herself readily available for questions and concerns. My kids enjoy going to school.

Bullies are a problem here both from the students and the teachers. Kids know when they aren't being watched and they take advantage of it. Teachers are in a position of power over the kids, and parents are helpless to do anything about it since it could cause them to be targeted for the next couple of years. Teachers are only required to log 2 grades each week online so the online grades aren't very accurate. Overall the teachers are good, the principal is good and the curriculum is good too. But it only takes a couple of things to make a pre-teen miserable, and when the teacher is always right, a parent's hands are tied. PTA and fundraising efforts are a little over-the-top aggressive. Once someone is given a quasi-title of room mom or band president or PTA-anything, it goes to their head. PTA is great at this school, but they're too aggressive. Moms should be moms, and school employees should be school employees. High school can have back packs but middle school can't because of security. They have to transfer everything to a computer bag once they get to school. Really?!? Difference?!? And yes, even with a computerized school, they have to carry around too much.

This school is by far the worst school I've ever been to and trust me I've lived a lot of places I come here and everyone's nice and first then nobody talks to you... I used to be very outgoing and would talk to anybody now im scared to even smile, this place ruined me don't let that happen to your kid. ONLY SEND YOUR CHILD HERE IF YOU HATE THEM! Im serious only bad things come from here.

We regret ever sending our child here. Our daughter experienced daily bullying, but the administration never took the issue seriously. My daughter even experienced incidences of bullying by a teacher. We pulled our daughter out mid-year.
