The kids are very disrespectful and disruptive. The teachers arnt able to teacher properly which leaves the students who want to learn, at a disadvantage.
Bullying is big, kids threatening to shoot other students on the bus, swearing... its just not a good environment for kids.
I decided to move my child from that.

Hi, Im a current 8th grader at this school and a member of the AGT program. AGT is moderately decent and the students and teachers are good however I take one regular Williams class and I have to say that the students are horrendous. Cussing out teachers, throwing stuff, fights, etc. The behavior is horrendous and thats only part of it. Many of the students are not here to learn and are here simply to be disruptive and rude. Teachers do barely anything to fix this behavior and simply dont care. Its a pain to go to school because I know that I will be yelled at, shoved, and made fun of for simply existing. The transitions between classes are the worst. Overcrowding causes so many fights, arguments, and tardiness. If you are tardy to class you will get written up/suspended when most of the time other people are prohibiting you from getting to class on time. Next, lets discuss the bathrooms, they are always disgusting, not functioning, and plain horrendous. There is feces on the ground and urine on the toilet seats. No one ever cleans up the bathrooms so it goes like this for weeks. The cafeteria is also deplorable. The food is cold and gross, and the tables are also nasty. Overall I would NOT recommend this school. I have had far more bad experiences than nice ones.

The student reviews from May 2023 are accurrate, with once exception being AGT at WMS for the purpose of keeping scores up. (That isn't true)

This was our first year at WMS and compared to our experience in another state, I was not impressed. The teachers didn't always keep the grades in the portal updated, and more than one did not seem helpful at all when it was a requirement based on my child's education plan. When my child was out sick for a week, one teacher was not going to allow my child to make up some work until I intervened. The teachers never seemed to know what was going on with school activities either. I would ask my child to find out from any teacher about specific events and all my child would come back with was, no one knows. There seemed to be a lot of fights going on, and I wasn't sure my kid was completely safe. The administrators will help and answer your questions, but you have to stay on them and most of the time go see them in person. They were most responsive if you come in or schedule a conference. If I could do it again, I probably wouldn't send my child to this school. However, from what I know, there is room for much improvement and parents need to stay on their kids about how to behave at school. Disruptive kids hurt everyone's learning experience and it's not the teachers' sole job to teach your kid how to act and be respectful and considerate to others.

Hey! I was a former student at the AGT program of the school, and to be entirely honest, its not the best. Allow me to elaborate. Firstly, fights would occur almost all the time, and sometimes navigating to classrooms was a pain. Secondly, the current principal honestly isnt the best. He treats us like younger children, yet expects us to act mature. He cannot run a school, and I feel sorry for anyone who has had him as a principal. He did significantly better as a vice principal. Thirdly, theres definitely favoritism towards those at regular Williams. The only reason why AGT is there is to promote test scores, because the school (more so the principal) does NOT care for them.
But hey, there are some good aspects too! Some of the teachers here (especially those at AGT) do a decent job teaching the material! Sometimes, Id even have fun that day depending on which classes I was going to.

The only reason this school isn't a failing school is because of the AGT program. I've gone to this school long enough to realize this. The only reason Williams has the AGT program is to ensure that the school isn't failing. In my expierience there's favoritism and discrimination from the teachers. Don't send your kids to this school as they will either bully or be bullied. The only way to not get bullied is to join the bullies in their acts. This school doesn't deserve your child as the teachers and staff don't care about the students. Williams was never a good school, and judging by what i've seen, I don't think it ever will.

We are new to the area and I was skeptical about sending my child to this school based on past reviews; however, I feel like the school is turning around for the better. My introverted child has had a positive experience thus far and continue to get straight As. My child reported a few interruptions at the beginning of the school year, but not many incidents since new discipline techniques were put in place.

I was a bit worried after reading some other reviews, but it has turned out to be a positive experience for most of the kids.
I think the teachers are working really hard now to keep discipline and the kids are fairly well behaved at this point.
Kudos to the staff and administration for correcting any issues this school might have had in the past.

To all the parents saying this school isnt that bad, please stop misleading parents. Today was my daughters first day and she called home crying. She described the classroom environment as disruptive and loud. She continued to explain that the children were rude to teachers, fighting in the class, and interrupted class lessons constantly, Teachers and staff need to push for more disciplinary action. IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO MOVE AND YOU ARE ZONED FOR WILLIAM ELEMENTARY. PLEASE MOVE SOMEWHERE ELSE. I did not heed the warning and Im looking into private school options.

This school is horrible. Students constantly gets bullied by the same people and the faculties and staffs barely do anything about it and the behavior is very unacceptable , there's fights three times a week.

I am currently enrolled in the AGT program for Williams Middle. The AGT program is fantastic. It allows me to be on the same level, instead of a higher level than most students. But the normal Williams Middle School kids have been ruining this experience. People have been getting into fights, they nonstop talk out of turn, and they will shove you across the hallway just to get to their class a bit quicker. was in the hall once, and a HydroFlask (metal water bottle) was thrown by my head, if it had hit me, I could have been knocked out. Williams Middle School's punishments are some of the worst. During the middle of a global pandemic (covid), they took away our soap, because Wiliams kids were making a mess. They also took away Homecoming dance because some kid wrote something on the wall. During band, one of my friends was almost punched for no reason. Our principal (Mr.Hedgeman) has decided that we were too loud when going to the bus zone, so he made a new system. This may sound good but I have missed my 3 times now, even if I was running I wouldn't make it on time. If you wanted to come to this school I would strongly suggest going to AGT. AGT has never had any problems, though we get the punishment all the same. I think that AGT should be its own school. If you are looking for an academically strong school I would suggest Triple AAA. Williams has never, and will never be a good school.

I admit that I was really scared to send my boys to this school based on multiple reviews and multiple people saying that it is terrible, but I admit am very impressed so far. Prior to this boys went to a small town public school. Then they did 1 year as homeschoolers and 2 years at Athens Renaissance school (ARS). They did not do well in ARS. It only has been two weeks since they started school and they are really doing well. For the first time ever they are excited about school. They really enjoy all teachers, except one. They ride the bus and their bus driver Ms. Gigi is great. My boys had their eyes open to a different types of students. This made them appreciate how blessed they are. This is great because working with all types of people this is true to life and keeping them in a bubble will hurt them later in life. I was really impressed with the goal of the school of teaching the kids about the importance of be organized, accountable, and having SMART goals. I feel that the teachers are amazing, really care, and are prepping them for high school. There may be bulling, but my boys dont mention it. Maybe it is due to my teaching about being resilient and having compassion, knowing from the mouth the heart speaks. You may read into what I say and agree or disagree, but just know that my words are not throughly thought out before writing. I just want to encourage you that if you feel that you are all out of options and have to go to Williams Middle School, you may be surprised and your kids may learn more than what is expected. If something changes, I will repost and let you know how it goes. So far, I am a happy with the education they are receiving.

The Academy for Gifted and Talented at Williams is a great opportunity for high academic achievers. I do not believe most of the kids there are actually "gifted". They simply come from families who instill old-fashioned ideals of respecting authority, academic excellence, and discipline in their children. One teacher actually let slip to my child that, "You are all mostly here because of your behavior", and I suspect that is true. Of course the AGT program was put in the Williams school as an attempt to boost the test scores of Williams. But the AGT program is in its own wing and is effectively a private school within a public school. This provides a safe, nurturing environment for kids who are serious (or have parents who are serious) about academic achievement, while being separated from the discipline problems at the rest of Williams.

My child is in the Academy for Gifted and Talented, a program within Williams. Homework is fairly well handled. We mostly have to work on Math and had to get a tutor to do well. After the tutor my child has an A in Algebra.

My child is in the Academy for Gifted and Talented, a program within Williams. The teachers in this program are, on the whole, very good. Mr. Graham in particular, who teaches history/social studies, is incredibly inspiring and goes the extra mile. In math, we have had to get a tutor outside of school to be successful.
Posted: January 15, 2020
Again, this is in regards to the Academy for Gifted and Talented at Williams, not Williams as a whole. AGT is a great environment at Williams, because it provides a safe, isolated environment for the "nerdy kids" - kids whose parents value academic excellence.
Posted: January 15, 2020
When the Academy for Gifted and Talented program was first started under Dr. Thorson, it felt like there was a dedicated administration person for the AGT program. Since he left, it feels like there has been a deliberate attempt to de-emphasize the AGT program and make it less independent and special and more integrated with the regular Williams school. I don't feel like AGT has the champion that it once had.

When there is a problem and they have had several problems throughout the year, the Principal and Assistant Principal does nothing to correct the problem. Your complaints go unheard and nothing is done to help with the problem.

Not good. If your child wants to participate in cheerleading or basketball, this is not the school for you. Move or put your child in another school if you possibly can. When parents complain nothing is done. The children are force to quit and they keep your money.

The Algebra teacher gives tons of homework each week. Many of the students are failing. She doesn't teach the material. She just expects the kids to know it. Many parents have complained, however, the Principal and Assistant Principle have done nothing.

The children showing disrespect to adults and bullying other children that is common in all but a choice few schools today happens too much at Williams. The decision to move my children was really based on the fact that a current teacher (loud and proud Christian) was investigated by the police where he lives for "servicing" them while they were on duty. There is no criminal act in that, but I do not want my children exposed to any more moral corruption than they are already exposed to at young ages by "professionals."

i have been at williams for three years. i love my school . we are the second highest test scoring school in the district next to Huntsville middle. but we are NASA'S best. and for the whole district average, Williams middle school by itself is higher than the whole district. so if you got something to say bad about Williams. then you have never been there. we have a magnet programs.

My school is getting a lot better. My son has being doing well at this school so far. He is now in the 8th grade. We not had any major issues.

JE Williams has had its share of problems, but once again parents want to blame the teachers for not caring or giving up. I challenge a parent to sit all day once a semester and see the challenges the teachers have to deal with. The problem stems from home life. I honestly have seen my son's grades decrease, but my observations is - the teachers have more to do than just teach. There are some real bad kids at the school. In my estimation, the 5% of kids that are disrespectful robs the other 95% of kids that truly want to learn. So if you are unhappy with the school, start with your kid and make sure he or he is not part of the problem. Try home schooling your kid and then determine if he or she is deserving to be sin public school or JE Williams.

This school and adminstration has been nothing but problems., kids cannot get what they are suppose to and from what I witness there is a lot of favoritism that goes on at this school. My family members that are enrolled here has had nothing but trouble. They are still not officially enrolled, although it has been almost two weeks. No laptops, no student ID#, or anything else. Despite many protest from my family and others. The kids are told in library that they are not getting a laptop yet??although most kids have theirs. Although gym is required...big joke. All anyone does is sit on their laptops, this includes the coaches. No work outs for the kids at all. This school has really turned out to be a major disappointment thus far. Before the cheerleaders of the school speak out....This is not about your kid(s), but about those not being served.

Not sure how a parent new to the area can rate this school before they have even had any real time dealing with school or issues that arise. Another new principal this year, I hope they take charge of the school and bring in the necessary leadership, accountability, and discipline to help shape this school for the better. BTW I am a parent of a star studded high caliber student, and fully support school education, last year was not a great year here! Goodluck hope this year is better!

We are new in the area and did A LOT of research for our children's educational futures in the Huntsville City School system. I have to say, I believe a lot of the parents of the star studded, high caliber students are not taking the time to rate this school! Students that go to this school go to Columbia High School and have VERY high college, military enlistment and graduation rates, with great scores and grades. I'm not sure if this is racial bias or angry parents feel the need to warn other parents, but we found our dream home in Madison and upon visiting the zoned schools for our children have been very impressed once we got in to talk to the administration, teachers, principals, security and other students! I'm very excited about the school year, plan on continuing to be involved in their educational goals, school board and town hall meetings. It starts at home. If my opinion changes, you can be sure I'll come back and let you know about it.
Posted: July 29, 2013
This school is awful. Where to begin? They have huge racial and bullying issues, the teachers do not do their job and seem to act like they just don't care. The school has changed principals three or four times as far as I know, and the laptops were a complete waste of time. Fights happen constantly, the security takes forever to get the situation under control. The academics and learning is soooo very low, many students nearly failed or have failed. The Huntsville School Board and Media should really take a look at this school!

School needs better teachers most of all needs to just be in regular clothes not in uniform. I moved to another home just so my son can go to a better school system

This is THE WORST SCHOOL EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My child has never been bullied so much. My child has never been below honor roll, now hes failing. When you call to talk to the principal, no matter how many times a day or week, she is ALWAYS IN A MEETING!!!!!! Never returns messages. I only got one reply from a teacher. I have complained many times. And the bus driver????Dont get me started. I am pulling my son out this week. I put him in this school as a reccommendation for his gifted status and was promised technology class. He got band. I have never seen a more horrid school than Williams. I will be making a complaint to the school board and may even to the media. This school is a circus that doesnt care about their students at all.
Posted: January 3, 2012
I have not had any involvement with the principle but I guess that is because I have raised a great child who possess both manors and good behavior. He loves the school and compared to most of the public middle schools in the area this is one of the tops in Huntsville. I suggest to the other parents who posted look at what has changed within their family or other external factors that is causing your child's behavior issues. I guessing that with your blaming the school that you will be able to admit to your short comings.
