There's so many things to say, we sent a very well-rounded smart child down this summer and weeks in. We picked up a struggling, unrecognizable child that we didn't know before. Grade slacked because of lack of attention, complete freedom, there's tons of kids here. Passing drugs around, the sex is prevalent. Without teachers watching or Ras watching at all in the afternoons and late hours of the night. Please be careful sending your child here if you think that they are there to help with the parenting, as in watching, making sure that they're having a a normal day-to-day, and not overwhelmed and told if you're mentally struggling you will be kicked out. Out. It looks great on paper but just be very careful, this was probably one of the worst decisions we had ever made for our child is sending them here.

I would not recommend this school. It is not a supportive place for young people's mental health.

ASMS is a really great school. I like my teachers a lot and I'm getting a better education than I would have been getting at my other school. The school will push you, but none of the classes are impossible if you just study and ask for help. I also like living in the dorms, which I know is preparing me for college life.

I love ASMS! My home school was not good, and ASMS has been a good experience. I feel like I am being prepared for college.

I actually love this school, but that's only because of my fellow students. Most of the teachers are pretty good. The rest of the staff treat you like you're a juvenile delinquent. Look this way, act this way, stop lounging around. Sometimes it's like a prison.

ASMS has provided my daughter with incredible opportunities. In short, her first year (sophmore) was pretty amazing. She's developed such a healthy outlook on her future and place in the world. There's a fantastic balance between academics, student/social life, and service. We could not be more grateful to the staff, faculty, and Alabama for providing such an incredible environment.

While there are a number of outcomes that could be used to measure the her success and the school's reputation, one that comes to mind is that she routinely receives invitations to apply to Harvard, Stanford, Vandy, Duke, Princeton, Yale, etc....and is frequently invited to various Ivy League events. There's no doubt ASMS has broadened her options and consideration set. ASMS might not be right for every kid or family (fwiw, she's our only), it's certainly challenging from a rigor standpoint, but we've found it to be just right (and worth the sacrifice of living away from home) - we couldn't be happier with our choice.

I found that many members of the administrative staff seemed very removed from the day to day realities of the school. Parents are led to believe that their children will be nurtured and guided. This is simply not true. For the most part, your child is responsible for themselves. No one is really paying much attention to their well being. If your child is having difficulties they will be responsible for asking for help. As a parent I know how difficult a task that is for a teenager. So when problems do arise, ultimately the administration will tell you that your child should have asked for help, therefore dismissing any culpability. I know this from experience.

The teachers at ASMS are outstanding. This school offers a wide range of classes and most of the teachers actually engage the students. I found it very easy to communicate with my child's teacher via email.

I can say that the interaction and development received from the teachers differs greatly from that received from the administration. The teachers offer guidance and development in a positive direction. The administration attempts to develop a sense of conformity. Very little "outside of the box".

In the end my child still chose to attend ASMS. Academically there is no better place. Personally, I wish we had another choice. You will not be kept informed of anything. It is the parents responsibility to ask the right questions. Don't do what I did and assume that your child is really being taken care of. At ASMS your child is fending for themselves. While the school may have lots of levels of help available, your teenager MUST reach out for anything. It is not the small community they make it out to be.

The amount of homework varies with each course and instructor. Students at the Alabama School of Math and Science are expected to function like college students. The required work is given on a syllabus and it is up to the student to keep track of things. This may not be an ideal situation for everyone.
