A wonderful school. I honestly believe this school is better than other elementary schools in Dothan that are typically ranked higher. Great staff and administrators, clean and up to date school. Small class sizes

This school has been, by far, the most disappointing educational experience I have ever encountered. The teachers lack adequate support in their classrooms, making it difficult to properly monitor and assist every student.
I have already submitted a formal complaint to the school board regarding the highly unprofessional behavior of the school principal, Ms. Fleming. My children are of African American and Latino descent, and I have never witnessed such evident racial discrimination, especially towards children, including those with learning disabilities. She demonstrated a complete lack of empathy by telling my husband and me how she would make sure she was on top of all doctor appointments regarding their disabilities. Such an insensitive and heartless remark was both inappropriate and deeply offensive, especially coming from someone in a leadership role who is supposed to support ALL student EQUALLY!!
I do not recommend this school to any parent. Despite being told that an investigation would take place following my complaint in August, I have yet to receive any update.
Furthermore, this school does not actively practice PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) parents must specifically request it. Having a principal and assistant principal who show little compassion or concern for the minority community is deeply troubling and unacceptable.

My 7 year old attends this school. Our experience could not have been better. Teachers are kind and listen, community and students are supportive and welcoming. I wish the playground could be updated to be a little bit less visible from the road, but otherwise, this is a wonderful elementary school.

Heard elementary comment/review
Family engagement? Where
Willing and able to help my daughter progress? No. Didn't even know her last name , constantly having to correct it on her papers. She has an IEP that they are aware of, not being followed. The teachers and aides do not communicate. Haven't talked to any of the alleged 4 (teacher and 3 aides) that are responsible for my daughter each day. No actual notes or comments home. Only way I found out her teacher's names was someone's written response to my questions written in the parent comment section of the 3 page daycare report they send home for me to sign. First page is just a list of activities and subjects and they checkmark what she's "done that day" The other two are color sheets they printed off with letter of the alphabet, the other random. My daughter is ASD not exceptionally challenged intellectually speaking. They are doing bare minimum if that even. Why take the positions if it means nothing to you or you've lost your passion? This school is a glorified daycare. I sent a written letter to the teacher on my daughter's first day. Explaining some things and providing mine and dad's contact information in case of behaviors. No response and sent my daughter home to tell me they needed things from me that I mentioned I'd be happy to provide as soon as possible written in that letter. I hate to assume but I feel the lack of response may be due to the fact that I wrote the letter in cursive. That's sad. And I am disgusted to see such lack of concern for my daughter and communication.

I honestly have no idea how rankings are done on this website. but the number here is so wrong. My girls do so well at Heard. We have dealt with schools in NC and SC, and Heard is by far the best school they have attended. I could not be happier with the education they receive at Heard.

As a grandparent and a retired teacher, I am very impressed with the positive environment that Jeff Hatfield and the staff create each day. It is a safe place to learn, socialize and grow.

We love Heard Magnet. Our son has been there for 4 years (3rd grader), and our daughter just started Kindergarten. We could not be any happier! We love the teachers and the Principal. Common Core has started, and is challenging. It changes the way the kids learn versus how we parents learned years ago, but the school is helping us adapt. I think it will be excellent to have the same standards across the nation. I want my kids to be as prepared as those in other states. I feel confident that Heard Magnet is doing their part to prepare these children!

Great school! Easy for parents to be involved, and you can tell that the staff love every child. Hard to leave when visiting.....my daughter loves going to school each day. This is a reflection of the quality education she gets each day at Heard in such a good environment.

This school is a very good school, and I am proud to hear my daughter and grandson tell people they go to Heard Magnet. It is a very great school, that really pushes the kids to use their talents and their imagination to the fullest. They take many educational field trips, that my kids wouldn't even have been able to take if it hadn't been for their attendance at Heard. They also offer many incentives for children who do well in school, such as food certificates to local restaurants, and trips to Wings and Things. Their principal,as well as teachers are very interested in every child there, and know just about every one by name, and they treat anyone that comes to the school,as well as the children with great respect.
