My kids are currently at HHS.
I heard about the toilet incident someone else mentioned. I personally feel a 90 day suspension for teens being dumb in a bathroom is reasonable. Likewise, I have had zero issues with administration being up front or working with my students. I have one child dealing with health issues. We have had nothing but positive support & kindness from staff to accommodate their needs & we have had no issue trying to make up things missed, like another review has had.
We moved here a year ago. The HS where we came from was a flashier, much nicer building, with very few student-behavior issues, but HHS, despite these things, ranks higher nationally & so far we are happy with it. My kids state they feel safe, they like their teachers, they are finding other students incredibly friendly (one of my kids said: People here are so friendly. They were friendly at [old school] but I've never had strangers high-fiving me when we're leaving school & telling me to have a good day, like here).
I took off one star for the...student behaviors, I guess is the best way to put it, and the need the school district has had to ensure much more structure and monitoring due to these behaviors.
My kids have complained that they each have a class where a few specific students are incredibly rude & disrespectful to the point of disrupting learning; short of 1 class each however, the rest of their classes are fine. They both plan to take almost exclusively honors/AP next yr to help ensure they are in classes with others who want to be there vs students who are there because they must be.
My oldest does state that she liked her previous HS better because they let them leave campus for lunch & didn't require any real monitoring of students during break periods. Here the campus and student activities outside of class are pretty tightly monitored. Also, due to some potential weapon threats at other schools within the district (not HHS), the district has recently implemented entrance through specific gates that have weapon-detectors. I appreciate the school district being proactive with safety, but do wish this was not something they needed to do.
Overall we are satisfied with HHS. It has its issues, as all schools do, but nothing that seems out of the realm of "normal life."

Teaching staff is mixed at best. School Administration withholds and often attempts to quell certain information from being told to parents. Student blew up a toilet, and was only suspended for 90 days. Administration (Principal Aaron King) claims to hope for the best academics for students, yet will not even let children leave classes to make up tests on "A" days. Would not recommend this school due to the incompetence of the people in power.

Most students dislike, If not, hate, this school. Only reasons people still go are the kids and it's required by law.

They are introducing Critical Race Theory in the curriculum. They dont deal with conflicts very well and hide the dirty laundry very well. I believe there are trolls on here making it a 5 star overall ratings too. My experience, many parents do not agree with this rating.

My son just graduated from HHS. He was never bullied. Teachers were excellent and responsive. In fact one sent a card wishing him success after graduation. About six years ago, the federal government intervened to bring more equality to the demographics. This is when the school ratings for Blossomwood and HHS went from 9s to where they are now. Huntsville city school system has the same level of educational readiness as they did before this change. The schools and teachers are top notch and the offerings will more than prepare a child for college and beyond. I am proud that students within the new system structure have the opportunity to succeed educationally and that they interact socially with a diverse demographic that is more representative of the city of Huntsville.

This school is terrible the staff are useless when it is to help my child they do nothing about the bullying so I moved him to a different school and he passed the other times here the teachers do nothing to help him!

Administrators do not like to deal with conflicts and try to shy away from them. This is from student behaviors to class schedules. Why bother selecting classes when the student gets whatever the school selects for them. And don't ask for changes because guidance does not exist. You can have the best teachers but they will not be successful with the weak administration this system has. No wonder so many students are home schooled or go to private schools in the area.

I am a graduate of Huntsville High School--class of '03! This is an amazing school, with amazing teachers and students. The curriculum is outstanding, as it prepares each and every one of its students for college. When I went off to college, for example, I was more than prepared; so prepared, in fact, that my first of year of college was EASIER than my senior year at HHS. I now have a Bachelor of Science in Molecular and Cell Biology and a Doctorate of Pharmacy from Auburn University. If it wasn't for the outstanding education I received at Huntsville High, I would not be where I am today. My kids will defintely attend this school in the future. Your's should, too!

I am a senior (class of 15) at Huntsville High, and am disappointed with the treatment of the student body in general. Most students can get away with breaking any rules and doing what they want, and many minorities are under a much stricter eye. If you take AP classes the teachers are generally pretty good. The other problem I've found with Huntsville teachers is the lack of care for students. Most of my teachers hardly know my name, even though I make a point to talk to them regularly. They don't care what's going on with your life or if you need help. It's a sink or swim, competitive environment forsure. I have been pleased with the acceptance and diversity in school activities with all students though. It's not weird for someone to be popular, in academic team, band, etc. HHS has made me want to make good grades and to go to a good college. The art department is amazing and the theater department is very good as well. If a student emerses themself, they'll be fine. It's just easy to get lost in the crowd.

As a student actively participating in JROTC at the high school as well as having participated in other electives, there is much more financial and administrative support that goes towards sports, but honestly it's hard not to find a school focused on sports in Alabama. However, the education I've been receiving here is phenomenal and most all of the teachers are great at what they do (especially in honors programs) . Wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the city schools. Go Panthers!

I'm proud to say I'm a Huntsville Panther. As the school representing the city of Huntsville, we strive to live up to our name. We're the best in the city at every sport and great in academics. I'm proud that I'll get to tell people I graduated from Huntsville High School in the class of 2016. Go panthers!
