Former student speaking and from my experience I think the education is good.
Except PE the teachers just have it as glorified recess and did not prepare me at ALL for high school PE. We did no push-ups no sit ups nothing. The most you did was walk a few laps around the track and you were free to do whatever as long as you don’t get hurt. They aren’t even that good as football coaches either so I don’t know how they haven’t been fired yet.
Aside from PE, my only other complaint is the lack of punishment. I was bullied a lot and the most the teachers ever did was walk up to them and tell them “Please stop doing _______ to _____.” If you were lucky, they would get detention, but it does nothing because they were already used to it. They didn’t even bat an eye when the special education kids were being bullied. Ms. Graham was the only teacher I ever saw do something about the bullying. It disgusts me that the school doesn’t care about this problem.

I am a rising junior in high school and a former student at Mountain Gap schools. I went to Mountain Gap from 2nd grade to 8th grade. I had to move schools before the last quarter of my 2nd grade year. When I arrived to Mountain Gap for my first day, I was welcomed with open arms. I arrived early and received a personal tour from the Principal and I had the opportunity to meet my teacher. Every staff member I interacted with from that day on was nothing but kind, welcoming, inclusive, and ethical. Not to mention, the student body was filled with great kids. With it being a smaller school (for the area), everyone could feel as though they were seen. I received many honors and awards throughout my time at Mountain Gap. If your child is going to attend Mountain Gap, I can guarantee you that they are in good hands! My years at Mountain Gap were some of the best years of my life. They surely set your students up for success! Live in the moment and be a good human- everything will be alright.

This school is horrible! If your child is black they do not care about them! They will push them under the door mat like they do all black kids having trouble! They don’t want to try harder to help a student! They do not want to get to know students all they do is say next instead of trying to know their students! This school is sad! THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT EDUCATION FOR BLACK STUDENTS!

We just finished our first year with a student at Mountain Gap Elementary School, and I am so glad we chose this school for our kids. Our daughter was enrolled in Kindergarten and she was so nurtured and loved by her teacher (Mrs. Gleason), by all the staff, great and small. My daughter only knew how to spell her name in the beginning, and came out reading really well. It was fabulous. The kids had plenty of fun opportunities in and outside the classroom. Field trips, a Christmas gathering with Santa and Mrs. Claus, a fun field day, and so much more made it a very memorable year. I highly recommend this elementary school and it's friendly staff!

Mountain gap has been a great experience for our elementary age children. The teachers and staff are friendly and approachable and our kids love going to school! The building is a bit dated but renovations are in the works and we are supposed to be getting a new playground this summer!

My child has received a quality education at Mountain Gap! He is reading way beyond is level and has made wonderful friends. He loves going to school everyday. The PTA is very involved and supportive. The teachers and staff have always been kind and helpful. We have loved every year (even through Covid).

I have loved mountain gap for my 2 elementary school age kids! The facilities are a little old but a new school will hopefully happen before my kids age out of MGS. We’ve had great teachers and the administrators seem very involved and are very responsive! I would highly recommend the elementary!

We love Mt. Gap! The principals, teachers and support staff are wonderful. They truly care about the students and want them to succeed. If you have a question or concern I feel like they really listen. The parents are very supportive as well. It feels like a close knit community. We feel lucky to be zoned for Mt. Gap!

Some students aren't worth their time and are forced out of school.

Posted: April 29, 2018

Nothing is done about it as the teaches seem to not care and are the main ones who do it.

Posted: April 29, 2018

No words can describe my experience, as the schools now don't care about what happens the the kids . Many teachers care but are powerless to stand up and make a difference for fear of retribution or a ruined career.

Posted: April 29, 2018

Only the top learners succeed others are looked down upon.

Posted: April 29, 2018

Some care but seem to be afraid to speak up as their jobs might be in jeopardy if they open their mouth.

Posted: April 29, 2018

Bullying by staff which encourages students to follow suit feel this is ok to pick on certain kids.

Posted: April 29, 2018

The school is run like a corporation and money is more important than the kids future . Teachers are kept in place by fear.

This year will be my last at mountain gap since Ism goig into the eighth grade and while I may be a bit biased since I am a Student there, I think I can safely say that while the school has quite a few flaws, its a good school.

As a former Mountain Gap student, I must say any negative comments about this school are ridiculous. Mountain Gap is by far the best middle school in the city if not in the state. Mountain Gap is very good with discipline and has the highest testing scores in the city. It's a great school and I fully recommend it ! I think those that gave the school negative ratings are just hard to please !

Mountain Gap is a good school that needs to have a lot changed about it. Some of the teachers can be really good and love their job, while others can be downright inappropriate. One in particular cusses a lot and another purposely fails her kids because she is too lazy. The after school clubs and electives are very limited compared to other schools like Hampton Cove. The bullying going on here is not really a lot, but it is verbal. I had a friend that everybody hated because she was obese and had autism. When I started in 6th Grade, there were a total of 3 Special Ed. teachers. There is only one now. There are very good teachers that care for your student and preparing him/her, but there are some bad ones, too. I think the school can improve if the bad teachers were replaced and the verbal abuse of students was cracked down on. The special education program here needs to improve a lot, not just for the under performers, but the over performers supposed to be in SPACE, too. Sadly, this will probably not happen with the school system's superintendent. Parents: If your child goes here, make sure that they are happy. Also, be prepared to need to have a conference with the teacher

I'm an eighth grader at Mountain Gap and I have been going here since kindergarten. It has been the best 9 years ever. If I had the chance to change schools, I wouldn't! This is a great school and I would recomend it to anyone! The teachers are amazing and care about each of the students individually. There are also many sports activities and other school activities that are very good! I love it here and I'm sad I have to leave this year, but I know I will be prepared for high school because of the outsanding things Mountain Gap has done for me!!

The teachers do very little to help the students with their work. And they are very very poor at keeping the parents imformed about their child. I will NEVER recommend this school to anyone moving to the area. I will be pushing for my daughter to file reports on the teachers who let my grandson get so far behind, that there was no other opinion then to pull him out of school and send him to his father. Who lives in another state. This school definitely does NOT stand by the motto "No Child will be left Behind." My daughter sent numerous emails and one teacher in particular NEVER responded...that is totally unacceptable. When I was raising my kids, I would go to the school and talk to the teacher..now it is done through email. Not everyone has a computer. Now I understand why teachers are getting paid less and have less respect from not only the students but from the parents and community in general. You should be ashamed Trust me I will tell everyone I know about this situation My grandson had to leave and it is because you did not care enough to help
