My experience as a former teacher at East Village Elementary leads me to strongly caution against sending your child to this school.
EVE has many amazing teachers, but the overall culture is lacking. Poor student behavior disrupts classrooms and interrupts learning. Many students are shockingly disrespectful and engage in antics like horseplay, and even fighting- without facing meaningful consequences. Teachers spend the majority of the class dealing with those disruptive students whose outrageous behaviors that wouldn't be allowed in any other public school. This means the rest of the class does not receive the attention they need.
It's a toxic environment, limiting quality teaching and learning to occur consistently.

My child told me almost every day how out of control the classroom was. It sounded like total anarchy in there, and I assumed he must be exaggerating, but he persisted. My child made the honor roll, despite not actually learning anything at all.
He explained how he was harassed nearly every day by students with no intervention from teachers, until finally when he was using the restroom another student kicked the stall door open striking my child in the face.
Id heard from people who used to teach here that it was out of control and the kids have no discipline, I ignored it.
I heard from my own child that the teachers have no power to do anything when children act out and the children constantly do what they want and speak how they want. That they touch each other inappropriately and say inappropriate things, I ignored it.
I was wrong. This place is chaos. After my child was attacked in the bathroom we wont be back. If your child is going there and telling you the same, please believe them. This is madness.

I was a Sped teacher at this location and the low income and special education students are underserved. I witnessed, on several occasions, special education students being placed in the corner of the room by gen. Ed. Teachers and given extremely low level assignments, just so they didnt bother them. At one point I had one of these students work with me and they completed higher level content math and the teacher told me that she wouldnt accept the work for a grade because is was 7th grade math and they were in 6th grade. Yet this teacher was comfortable giving this same student kindergarten math programs while in her room. Students are also being pulled from class during core class time and the content covered by the other sped teacher was no where near grade level. They had 6th graders still working on addition and subtraction instead of giving them the necessary accommodations to perform grade level math. This is why the Score for sped students is so low. Sped teachers are also instructed by their supervisor to teach to the students goals, but when reviewing the goals they were not broad, not rigorous enough, and short term. Also there was a sped teacher who basically recycled the goals from the previous year. When completing the end of the year IEPs, I witnessed several of her students receiving the same goals for the next school year because they had not mastered their current goal. This is something that can happen, but it is not something that should happen consistently for all of your students. If you as a Sped teacher realize your student is not progressing as they should be, you need to adjust your instruction or maybe look at additional modifications you can do to the lesson. NONE OF THAT IS DONE! It is ridiculous how that department is ran, and it is clearly reflected in the test scores of the SPED students. Also parents are still not allowed to come inside the school to check on their kids during the school day.
