Hello, I was a student here for my entire time as both a 6th grader and a 7th grader (2024-2026.) If you are a parent, stay and read, because this is a genuine review as a former student with now going into Sylvan Hills Junior High School.

If your child is any of the following: overweight, nerdy or geeky, unattractive, without a parent, has mental disorders like Autism or Schizophrenia, part of LGBTQIA+, or “abnormal” in ANY way, DO NOT SEND THEM HERE. It will be HELL.

As for the average experience for ANY kid, here’s how it usually goes. Fights happen at least five times a month, your kid will be teased or picked on relentlessly, the administration sometimes will damage personal belongings like headphones or an actual phone, students are always racist towards anyone who might not be black or a POC, etcetera.

My older sister went here for her own middle school years. If I recall correctly, she was tremendously bullied because of one thing: being overweight. She was allowed to stay home as long as she needed for her mental health, but nothing was done to punish the kids who made her time there miserable.

My friend my age went here for her middle school years as well. She has Autism and Schizophrenia—-because of this, she was constantly teased and overstimulated because of the kids. She was miserable.

Please, I beg you, do NOT send your kid here, for their own sake. Thank you.

This school is the worst school I have ever attended. Their whole thing is about having “bear pride” (which is their mascot) but I don’t think people that go this school are prideful about all the fights and shooting threats they get. Different shooting dates are on the bathroom stalls, if students can’t feel safe here then what’s the point. Other people have also called the school regarding this situation, and all the school replied with is something that happens DAILY, and they can’t do anything about it. And lots of fights breakout, the special Ed teachers neglect their children.

I am a current student here, just to inform you. The hallways are PACKED. There’s barely space for you to walk without anybody pushing you, or stepping on the back of your shoe while walking. The district is also super broke and can’t fund for field trips. The staff also don’t take bullying seriously while telling you to suck it up, the outside of the school where students go after lunch are also filthy. Trash everywhere and there rust growing on the pillars.

They suspended my child for hitting a boy that hit her first and my daughter got more days of suspension than the boy who attacked her first. It was in a way of self defense and they still suspended her, She was also getting bullied and picked on and the assistant principal told her to suck it up. We will never send any of our kids to this school ever again!!

This school is by far the worst school within at least 100+ miles. Many of the teachers are unengaged, students are constantly skipping class, and the district doesn't care whatsoever. The school is on yellow lockdown 2+ times monthly to evacuate a student who passed out due to smoking, vaping, etc. district tries to encourage extracurricular activities, but pulls funding for everything that's not a sport. Extra programs are always being assigned to remediate test scores, but they cause the opposite. Do not send your student here if possible.

Boy oh boy, I've been looking for something like this for a long time. I've been going to Sylvan Hills since pre-k, currently in 8th. And during my elementary years, we didn't get to choose where we got to sit. Once. I got to middle school, I thought I'd be able to sit wherever I please when eating lunch. Next thing I'd like to talk about is some of the most ignorant rules. There's this one teacher that will nag your ear off about having your headphones in while walking to dismissal. Or when walking to your first class in the morning, (the only time I ever have them in) from the gym. Also, idk if she still does tell folks they can't have their phones out in the hall but she has. Anyways, enough flaming the teacher. Besides the bad stuff, (I believe) all the teachers are trying their hardest to just teach you what you need to learn. Plus how else would you get to where you wanna go? The kids don't help though. I mean, (not to put them in a label because that doesn't define them) when a quiet kid tries to put in their input (it being something sweet and simple) they get shut down by some kid who's barely passing because they get their answers from other people. Then the kid who got shut down gets angry, and their self esteem is shut down. I just don't understand how someone can't, one, think before they speak, two, treat others how you'd want to be treated, and three just be nice. Today actually, I was sitting out on the bench after lunch with my two other friends and this guy who no one likes, everyone avoids, but it's not like they even took the time to get to know who he his. But it is because he's a little weird, but he was going to sit down at the bench and he said hi so the three of us waved. He says, "Y'know, I'm very surprised, usually when I come around people get weird and go away. But you guys didn't, good job," and he held up his hand for a high-five so I made thee first move and gave him one and so did the others. But of course people will always continue to judge, do bad, or make fun of as long as they're not told about themselves. - thewiseone

I am appalled by the way the teachers behavior is at this school. We have had nothing but trouble with the staff since we have been here. My child was bullied in the beginning of the year. She has been called "cracker" and "slut". She's in 6th grade. Who wants this treatment for their child? When I question the schools plan of action they defend the behavior due to the fact that they know the kids parents. (I was told this while in the principles office filling out a complaint) I hate that I have to leave my child there everyday.

As an eighth grader who has been at the new school since sixth grade, I can give you a complete review of my school. Overall, the years have been pretty good. Most of the teachers are pretty good and pretty nice. The food is a little bit better than the food at Sylvan Hills Elementary, but it's still pretty similar. The principals are pretty harsh though, and they have some really unnecessary rules. To go to lunch/recess, you have to go AROUND the back side of the school, because they don't want us to go through the halls and supposedly annoy the other grades. Also, if you plan on seeing nice kids all over, you wouldn't be all the way right. Sure, there are some nice and brilliant kids here, but fights happen every once in a while. A lot of kids are pretty mean as well. This causes the good kids to be sucked into the bad kids' punishments. Now, as I mentioned earlier, the principals have some strange rules, but some of them I like. Just recently they decided to say that if a phone is seen out, as in a pocket, it will be taken. As they said this, a lot of kids groaned and disliked this new rule. I liked it, because if you have your phone out, I've seen kids pull out their phone during a lesson, or even during a test, so by having us put them away until after school hours, this will cause less cheating to occur, and kids to be focused on a lesson. However, telling kids to walk on the gravel (even when it is unbearably cold, just not when it's raining), and the muddy ground just to get to lunch and back is a bit ridiculous. Overall, if you want a lovely school, lovely teachers, lovely lessons, okay principals, a bit insane bunch of students, and some odd rules, this is the school for you. I know that this was the school for me, and it was great.

I graduated as an eighth grader for the 2013-2014 year at SHMS, and I'll tell you my exact thought of this school and it's people. This may seem cliche, because I'm "just a kid and don't value what has been given to me" and I'll "hate school no matter where I'm going"; but you see, that's not the case. I hated this school. Hate. Four big fat letters that deserve to be capitalized, but I won't be immature about this subject. This is a horrible school and I suggest that if you want your children to love you, don't send them here. I don't blame my parents, but, in a way I do. I wanted to go to Northwood, but SHMS was "closer to home". This school basically resembles a jail in it's closet 99.9% form. The rules are completely unreasonable (most of them, that is) and almost 50% of the staff especially the principal are incredibly mean. Me, being one of the better kids, I would know why they had to be. But, being one of the good kids, I would know that from personal experience, it never fails with this school, the good kids always get mushed in with the bad kids. In short, please don't send your kids here. Nice school, horrible people.
