Magee Middle School

They did nothing during months of my granddaughter being bullied. She was pushed to the ground and hit on several occasions, including several punches to the head. Some occasions were caught on video, yet they still did nothing. They seemed more concerned about protecting those that were doing the bullying and believing their unrealistic stories than protecting her. She had to change schools because she no longer felt safe. I am so disappointed in the teachers and staff that turned their head and ignored what was happening. They should protect everyone that attends but they do not.

I only been hear for 6 and also 7 grade it is so amazing! Only bad thing that i have ever experience was bulling and drugs .

This place is a total disaster! They have lots of bullies and many of the teachers are mean and their support services are total garbage so please don’t come here. This school is also rated “F” by most school websites. My parents withdrew me only 4 days after starting school. I had to move to Vail School District and build a new (Not new anymore, almost 4 years old now) house because of this messed up school that’s not following the law, however I do like my newer house. Thanks to my family, Vail School District, and Pulte Homes for getting me out of this place and to a new place with new opportunities. I believe they should demolish Magee and donate the land to me.

Magee had many problems last year. Students would fight constantly, and teachers/staff were too busy dealing with the fight before to discipline the children. The teachers tried their best, but it wasn't a safe environment. This year, unlike last year, teachers are more prepared to handle issues, and the students are falling into line with much less of a struggle. Magee is a great school now thanks to excellent planning and great staff!

My daughter consistently has homework, but I feel it is reasonable. The assignments are challenging and her teachers have been available to help outside of class when she has needed it.

There has been a lot of changes to the staff in the past two years. A lot. I feel the team of teachers now is strong. For the most part they are intelligent, hard working, and care about the kids. It is also important to me that teachers post grades, answer emails, and treat my child with respect. They have done a good job in all of those areas.

The administrators are very visible and helpful. I see them at all the events and during pick-up/drop-off. As a parent I feel well informed about what is going on around the school. More importantly, my daughter feels safe at school.

I have seen students who struggle and students who excel and everyone in between in my daughter's classes. Some of the classes have extra teachers who help students. Some of the teachers change assignments for kids who need help or need to be challenged.

My 6th grader was very unhappy with most of his classes and teachers, describing daily aggravation, frustration, irritation, and tons of yelling and threats over discipline problems in the classrooms. The office staff is definitely rude to parents and students. We are not returning.

My child has been at Magee since 6th grade and is now an 8th grader, as every child who starts back to school there will be some rough days if not weeks ahead until they adjust to the changes. My experience from Magee and what my child tells me, I feel pretty good that she is getting a good education and likes her teachers. I do find that there seems to be a lot of homework which really pushes the students to achieve and complete them but at the same time can overwhelm them if they do not have a support system. Mr. Ericsson the former principal I thought was great and inviting the office staff on the other hand is a different story. Let's just say you avoid the rude ones. I feel the teachers give what they can with the resources they get from TUSD. I believe in supporting TUSD and have never thought about sending my child to a charter school. I know of several parents who choose a charter school because they believed the hype it's better. As the years have progressed they are now back at a TUSD school and their children are much happier.

Magee has a great orchestra program. The social studies teachers are top-notch as well. There are several extended field trips available ($) with extra learning that are offered each year. Although this is a middle school, if you want your sixth grader to have a traditional single-teacher classroom, that is also available. Downsides--some students don't control their behavior. Some classes can feel chaotic, although most do not. The previous principal was excellent and it is hoped the new one will be the same.

We're glad we have chosen Magee for our three children.

Magee has been a wonderful school for my child. The teachers care about learning and will go to great lengths to ensure that kids are understanding and keeping up with lessons being taught. The communication between teachers and parents has been fantastic. There are many extra curricular activities for kids to join and the coaches are dedicated and positive across the board. The administration is great at communicating and responding when there are needs and the teachers have a wonderful way of creating a positive and enriching environment in their classrooms. Like all schools, there are challenges within the student body but the staff is committed to keeping the campus safe and a great place to learn.

The principal at Magee lacks commitment and vision for the school. His frequent absences and lack of commitment to improving the school is obvious and the students and staff suffer for it. Thankfully, the assistant principal is excellent as well as most of the teachers. However, until Magee has a principal that wants to make a difference in the lives of students, Magee will remain an average school.

Magee continues to thrive and maintain enrollment, despite the budget cuts and lack of staffing from the State of Arizona. The staff goes above and beyond the call of duty to help, when you ask for help. The school administration is visible and listens to concerns and works to rectify them as quickly as possible. I can only imagine the great things Magee could do if the state of Arizona actually funded public education and not charter schools.

I have desperately wanted my daughter out of this school for the last 6 months. I was looking for other options and I came across a couple of charter schools but they were full and had waiting lists. After some thoughts, I really didn t want my daughter at a charter school and I wanted to support the traditional public school system. My daughter had come from Collier and it was an excellent learning experience for her. When she went to Magee she became miserable and she just was not excelling to her capacity. I have an older son who attended Magee and did extremely well and he is now a Sr. at Sabino . I think the main problem is the leadership at Magee. The principal just does not care about the students and their education. He looks angry all the time. The front office is often rude and looks miserable too. Magee needs to replace the administration to be successful again. I am happy to say my daughter will attending the new Sabino JR high next year for 7th with a real leader Mr. Munger. Sorry Magee is not a current quality school.

Magee Middle School is run more like a JV detention center rather than an school. If you want to prepare your child for such a future, then by all means register them at Magee. They implement their school policies like criminal statutes rather than to promote learning. They finally did away with the punitive "Pride" program after so many complaints but the mentality still persists. Recently they had a session to punish the whole 7th grade. God only knows for what. If you voice your concerns expect your child to be targeted and staff to become adversarial. Thank goodness for the community Sabino High School recently opened up a Jr. High program in the area. Its a "blue ribbon" "A" rated school.

They have a great staff and strong leadership. The facility could use some upgrades, which is common in TUSD. For Tucson middle schools, Magee is one of the best.

The principal asked parents to submit reviews at a recent school function so that is why there are so many current reviews. I disagree with the previous reviewer's negative perception of the school. Most of the teachers have been there for many years. I feel that the majority of the teachers are caring and want the best for their students. I have found that teachers email me with concerns or quickly respond to emails. Due to TUSD cutbacks, the front office is primarily run by students as an elective choice with adult supervision. The electives that are offered are Spanish, technology, drama, PE, band, and orchestra. I'd like to see art brought back. The vice principal heads up the disciplinary actions, is tough on bullying, and is fair but firm. I truly feel that Magee is above average compared to other TUSD schools.

Magee Middle school has been on a spiral downfall the last few years. They cannot seem to keep the same teachers. They have been losing their teachers to other districts or just better schools in general. The few teachers that have remained teaching at Magee are great teachers but they seem overwhelmed with the over pour of students. This school used to teach anti bullying, however there front office administration and principal have targeted students and parents that are not with in there circle like a childish click. They have proven to stick their nose where it does not belong instead of trying to improve students education. The lack of ethical leadership in this school the last few years has not provided students with direction, structure, or responsibility. Check out other districts, charters, or other TUSD options. This school is currently rated a 4 out of 10 on great schools. They are a "C" letter grade school with objectives not met on Arizona report cards. Do the research and see there numbers have dropped. The previous 5 star ratings were probably all an act of trickery all done by the same person/people because this school is losing enrollment to high performing charters

My son attended Magee for 7th and 8th grade (twice). Thank goodness for teachers that cared and communicated and suggested that he say and repeat 8th grade. He is now a senior at Sahuaro and taking AP classes. He still loves school and is planning on furthering his education after graduation. I attribute much of this to the teachers that intervened and helped him to succeed. He also participated in Magee's fabulous music program. They continually get Superior ratings at their ABODA festivals. Thank you for all that you have done for my child!

We open enrolled at Magee after trying several charter schools. We were frustrated with the lack of rigor and discipline as well as the extremely limited or non-existent extra curricular activities. For those that believe that charter schools are better without exception, I can tell you this was not our experience. One program we enrolled in was short-lived and closed their doors. The other had a revolving door of teachers and very limited resources. Once we toured Magee, the difference was obvious. You walk the halls and it is clean, students are busily working, teachers are caring and the curriculum is challenging. I have been particularly impressed with the Science department. At our children's previous school, kids rarely did any kind of hands-on lab type activities (partially I sure due to the lack of discipline and concerns over safety). Here they are a regular occurrence. These have really got my kids excited about careers in science. The Odyssey of the Mind program is a great addition and allows them to further explore both their science and creative sides at the same time. If you are on the fence, I recommend that you ask for a tour. You will be impressed!

My daughter participated in Magee's Odyssey of the Mind program, and her team made it all the way to the world championships her 7th & 8th grade years. In 6th grade, she went to Washington DC on a very educational trip. Magee has top-rated music programs, and many teachers there deserve recognition for their hard work & dedication to students, especially Mrs. Letson, Ms. Wilson, and the entire language arts department. I highly recommend this school for anyone who wants their son/daughter to receive a top quality education.

My daughter attended Magee 6-8 and is currently enrolled at Sabino as a freshman. At Magee she received an excellent education with so many additional benefits of the fantastic music program Odyssey of the Mind and Dc Washington DC club. Magee is an extraordinary school with a superior dedicated staff.

How quickly and how far Magee has fallen! My oldest daughter (now a Junior at Sabino) went to Magee and we were pleased with the teachers and the principal. They were strict yet caring and dedicated. In the two years since the change in leadership, we have watched this school tumble. My youngest daughter is about to complete 6th grade at Magee and we have decided she won't be returning. The few teachers that do care (or did care) are leaving. (Yes, the band was amazing, but even that teacher is leaving). The classrooms are crowded, the staff is overwhelmed and simply don't care anymore. Unfortunately, it is the students who are paying the price. The good teachers are moving on. The principal is simply not nice to deal with and I never got the feeling he cared about any of the kids or our concerns as parents (and yes, we have brought them to his attention - many times). I pains me to see a child go from enthusiastic about school to hating it. We will be moving her out of Magee in hopes of rekindling that spark.

This school has gone down hill the last few years. I understand that there has been budget cuts for TUSD, but it is reflecting on these kids education. This school does not provide text books for the children, some teachers provide xerox book pages for students. If a child does not complete classwork they do not have a text book to take home to complete the assignment. Some of the teachers my children have had are extremely helpful and pick up the slack for others. This school has become worse the last couple years probably due to other TUSD schools closing and now the classes are more overcrowded than before. The front office is extremely rude and lacks communication skills with parents. The new principal has yet to show leadership for the school. Check out other districts or charter schools before thinking of registering your child here. Great schools rate Magee at 5. poor rating.

This school is great!, it has its ups and downs but overall it's a great middle school.the teachers are understanding(for the most part) and another are the field trips and clubs. DC club great ODYSSEY of the mind also very great it is a nice school they also have a anti-bulling campaign that's why I give 5 stars

Magee used to be a great school. I've attended Magee since the sixth grade. The old principal was great, but he's recently retired. Our new principal is the rudest man I've ever met in my life, quite literally. When I address him with problems, he sends me back to class. He introduced the 'PRIDE' program to Magee last year which has done nothing but harm. I had accumulated these PRIDE hours, and was never told about them. Come the end of this year, I'm now not allowed to walk at graduation, participate in the 8th grade end-of-the-year activities, or get a yearbook that was paid for. The school staff is never helpful and does nothing but harass students. This is the end of my eighth grade year, thank goodness. Do NOT enroll your child at Magee - the school has changed for the worst.

We have nothing but great things to say about Magee. Both the principal, assistant principal are doing a wonderful job. Also we have had some of the best teachers ever! We are proud of this school.

I am so happy to see that I am not the only one having problems at Magee. I am very surprised that more parents aren't saying anything about this. I am having a second meeting with all 6 teachers as well as the principal because my child "doodles" on her papers. If this is the worst behavior going on at this school then they should be very proud indeed! My daughter and I feel that we are being picked on and bullied by the staff. I have never had any positive feedback from any of them and only negative. She also got in "trouble" for reading in class. I don't feel comfortable discouraging my child from reading. I hope more parents will come forward and speak about this unfair treatment of our children. I don't want to pull my daughter out in the middle of the school year...but she will NOT be returning next year.

For the first time in my daughter's life she came home crying and screaming that she hated school!!!!! Their "Pride" program takes punishment to a whole new level. If they forget anything, a pencil or even a sharpened pencil or a piece of paper they get detention and the parent has to put their job in serious danger to pick up their child from detention daily because they can't ride the bus home. I totally disagree with this program they have gone too far. Very unhappy parent I won't take the chance on losing my business because someone can't lend my daughter a pencil to write with especially when other kids are stealing them from my daughter. And what of the "No Child Left Behind" crock that I now have to pay for a tutor that I can't afford. She dreamed of becoming a surgeon and now wants to drop out of school. Totally disappointed in this school. NO HELP HERE!
