Our experience with The Gregory School raised serious concerns about how the school follows its own policies. There appears to be a disconnect between what is outlined in the handbook and how situations are actually handled in practice.

In particular, administrative decisions did not align with the school’s stated guidelines, and concerns about consistency and process were not meaningfully addressed. Communication with parents was limited, and when questions were raised, the responses felt dismissive and, at times, pressured rather than transparent and collaborative.

It is concerning when a school sets clear policies but does not consistently apply them, especially when those decisions can impact a student’s academic record.

Based on this experience, I would encourage families to carefully review how policies are implemented in real situations and how communication with parents is handled.

There are many things to like about Gregory on paper. Smaller classes, better student teacher ratios, healthier food choices, good electives, more free time, Friday explorations (very sporadically interesting for kids), class trips. BUT a high percentage of teens have mental health issues, thoughts of suicide, and bullying is rampant. It is normal everyday language to speak threateningly, make sexist and racist comments and hit other students and then laugh it off as boys being boys. Girls do it too! It is rampant even among students excelling academically and winning end of year awards. If parents would look online they would see what teens are saying about themselves or others. Teachers definitely do see and hear this and nothing is done. Despite the available money and parent involvement there are zero bullying programs and all act as if it is not going on. Not sure if this is because school doesn’t want liability of saying they know there is a problem or worried about loss of revenue because of the bullies weee kicked out there would be about 50% students left.

My son, a junior, is in his third year at The Gregory School and I could not say enough good things about this school. The teachers are fantastic and take time to get to know each student. The classes are small enough that the teachers engage individually with each student and help each one on their own terms. As a private school, they don't provide extensive services for kids with EIPs or 405s, but I always talk with my son's teachers at the beginning of each year about his challenges and needs, and every one has responded positively and followed my suggestions. The school offers lots of electives, lots of variety, and provides time at school to do homework so there is not a crazy amount to do at home. And I love that the kids have a change to discover new interests through Friday Explorations classes. We love The Gregory School!

At this school, money drives most things. When I attended, the teachers were constantly leaving or retiring. The management was shifting around constantly. Due to the amount of white students attending, bullying based on race was prevalent. The teachers that stayed around were amazing for the most part, but so many teachers left it was inconsistent who was going to be teaching you and for how long. Most kids had private tutors or some other form of outside help that allowed them to thrive, and if you didn’t have this available to you it was easy to feel left behind. The academics weren’t exactly as intense as at a school like Basis, but there was a heavy emphasis on GPA and the like. If you didn’t already have support from the outside and an idea of what you wanted to do going forward it was easy to feel stranded because there is such a heavy emphasis on college. If you want your kid to feel extremely stressed about attending a good university, then that is alright, but for those kids who were considering alternative routes it wasn’t exactly praised or pushed. Help for disabilities really varied by the teacher, and some teachers weren’t keen on helping. The schools worst fault was favoring the kids who paid or donated the most money. It is not a bad school if you come from money, but for those who are not wealthy it was easy to feel ostracized both socially and educationally. Especially if you weren’t as smart as your fellow classmates. The issue of race was really a problem as well, a lot of the students come from very sheltered backgrounds and don’t know how to interact with kids from different demographics. I am not saying to not send your kid here but if your kid is a minority of any sort, or has any sort of intellectual disability or physical disability, it is not ideal.

Our daughter is in middle school at the Gregory school and LOVES it. Literally, every day, she says she loves school. She’s been to a few schools and has never before said she loves them like this. She has said she likes other schools, but never said she loved them. The staff is even doing a book club and are currently reading the book, Permission to Feel. Wow. They have Friday explorations which are just SO cool. You can find a YouTube video about that made by a student. Students get to choose what they want to do for their explorations which last between 1 and 3 Fridays. They have interim week each year where every grade has a whole week of field trips - full day trips. The high school students went to Utah (I think 10th grade), other grades went other places, some locally, some to like Mt Lemmon, etc. Wonderful community building, bonding, and learning experiences.

The whole staff is just so thoughtful in their choices. Very student focused. I am a former teacher and am very picky about schools because I know what they should be doing. I can find no faults with Gregory (this is a first). Plus, they serve actually healthy lunches so I don’t have to pack lunch. So nice. They do dirty dozen organic. Made from scratch mostly. Often using food from their garden. Fries have trans fats, so I just tell my daughter to skip the fries, but very healthy otherwise. I can’t say enough good things about it. You can also have your kid do a trial day to check it out.

They have need based scholarships and if you don’t qualify, you could get an ESA tuition reimbursement. They are also a non-profit organization, which means that make decisions that are best for students, not best for profit.

My experience at this school has been positive and encouraging. The community is excellent and helpful. Dedicated teachers and leadership are doing everything they can to support students and parents. My son was back after two years in Salpointe. He seems happier and enjoying the school and loves his teachers at TGS.

The teachers are fabulous! ...dedicated and engaging. The school is very responsive to parents. The smaller size provided many opportunities to take part in school activities and extracurriculars not otherwise possible at larger schools. The exploratory elective on Fridays provided an opportunity to try out new things and new subject. The curriculum is well thought out. Our kid was intellectually challenged and able to take plenty of AP courses. Choosing Gregory School for our high school student was the best decision we have made for our kid...so far.

I absolutely love this school!
I have had multiple children attend this school since 2013. I had plenty of reservations prior to enrolling because my children are black and we are not wealthy. I was afraid of how they would be treated by the school and the parents. About a month in, I realized what a special place this was. My kids were always treated equally by both the parents and the administration.
The teachers go above and beyond to help the kids. The teachers meet regularly with each kids “advisor” to discuss the kids progress and they develop action plans that are across the board to help.
My youngest daughter had some bullying issues with another child in middle school but once I brought it to the administration, they put a stop to it immediately.
The academics are well above state standards and they not only teach academics but they teach you how to study and be prepared for college.
I had one child attend from 7-12 grade and she realized in college how Gregory prepared she really was for college.
My other kids only attended middle school because they wanted to go to a larger high school for sports.
Gregory has a successful sports program but they didn’t have football so we had to move. All of my kids, have life long friends and have community connections with the parents! Great school!

This school is driven by money. The parents who have it buy their kids out of trouble constantly. And there is a lot of trouble here. The academics are ok but the teachers are not helpful. The leadership is exceptionally poor. There is no accountability or emphasis on character development. There aren’t any fun activities or extra curricular activities that are fun. There is no school spirit ot sense of community. The teachers don’t seem to like being there. The principal doesn’t like kids and is very judgmental. The turnover rate is very high. Most kids stay one semester or two at the most. The kids who return seem to have already been at multiple schools so they have no options. And they are the reason the other kids leave. This is not a friendly or inclusive school. It is very difficult to make friends. For the money you pay to go her you would expect to see some exceptionalism. We didn’t find that in any area. For academics, basis is a better choice. For social environment, any school in Tucson, Marana or Vail is going to be way way better.

One of the true assets of TGS are its faculty. They are dedicated, experienced teachers who love what they do. Small class sizes, advisory groups and tutorial time built into the schedule allows tremendous contact time between teachers and students and the teachers are very accessible. Whenever I attend a curriculum night and experience the quality of these teachers, I find myself wishing I had attended a school like TGS.

I don't have much direct personal experience with bullying at this school. My impression is that the students are a diverse group, including many international students, and differences seem to be celebrated and accepted.

Our experience over the past five years has been outstanding, at both the middle and upper school levels. Our children work hard academically but they also have fun and experience new things regularly. The really enjoy and respect their teachers and are learning to be critical thinkers and good citizens.

Homework assignments take many forms, depending on the class/subject. Overall though the work load is generally appropriate and there is not a heavy reliance on rote memorization or busy work. There is much writing and critical thinking and the teachers are thoughtful in their assignments and grading.

Bullying has never been an issue that I have noted. The students at the Gregory School are welcoming and accepting of each other and peer groups are fluid as evidenced by my the always changing groups of students who sit together at lunch.

Starting in middle school, and continuing through upper school, there is a focus on getting students to plan ahead and think about what they need to do to successfully complete their homework. There are few if any "busy-work" assignments, and homework is often tailored to the individual students' interests.

Teachers are engaging and, by focusing on students' strengths, help students overcome their weaknesses. The faculty at the Gregory School works together to develop an integrated curriculum across disciplines so that students see the interconnectedness of the various subjects that they are studying (what they are learning in science frequently relates to what they are learning in English and History, etc.). This helps student to become critical thinkers and engage more in subjects that they might otherwise have less interest in. My students' have said that the best teachers they have ever had, bar none, are at TGS (we came from CFSD where we had been generally happy with the teachers, so that is saying something).

Leadership in both the upper and middle schools are committed to providing the support that is necessary for faculty and students alike to succeed. Although the curriculum at the Gregory School is rigorous, there is an emphasis in making sure that students are having a positive experience in and out of the classroom.

The Head of School, Julie Sherrill, is fantastic. Through her leadership the faculty is stronger and much more cohesive than it was six years ago, and through her efforts the school now has an MIT certified "Fab Lab" (maker space, complete with laser cutters, 3D printers, etc. that ALL of the classes use to enhance learning). Also largely though her efforts, the school now boasts a brand-new lunch room and kitchen which meals are included in the tuition - food is healthy and tasty (according to my student).

The Gregory School has been an incredible experience for my students. The teachers are engaged and well liked. The students too are engaged, interested, and interesting. The tangible skills such as note taking, writing, mathematics, etc. that are instilled are incredible and my older student has enjoyed great success in college largely as a result of the Gregory School.

I pretty much guarantee that if your child does a "shadow day" at The Gregory School, that is where he or she will want to go to school. It is amazing.

Excellent. My son hated school throughout elementary school, but he now loves it. When he did a shadow day, he fell in love with the Gregory School as he got to play a czar in a readers' theater of a Russian folk tale in English class. He is engaged and excited to learn, and the small class size fosters closeness between students and teachers.

My son has ADD, and his teachers have been very supportive and encouraging to him. The school created an accommodation plan for when he needs extra time to complete longer assignments or when the cumulative workload gets overwhelming, which has helped him to thrive.

My daughter attended our local CFSD elementary school from kindergarten and it was great up until 5th grade. Partway through that year ('14-'15) she was unhappy and did not love school as much as she had previously. So she did a shadow day at The Gregory School. She loved it so much that she begged us to send her there right away. We had her switched within two weeks and have never regretted it. The teachers have been fantastic, the small class sizes are wonderful, and the two combined mean that the kids get to do lots of hands-on and interesting learning activities. The campus is open and lovely, there is a great farmyard with goats and chickens that are cared for by the students, and the teachers really get to know the students. Our daughter rocketed ahead in math and is now in 7th grade doing 9th-grade level work and loving it. She has taken Latin and now takes both Spanish and French. She has guitar as an elective class. She has spent time in the Fab Lab working on a project of her own design. She's done basketball, volleyball and track, and now she is part of the all-school musical. The teachers are open, friendly and happy, not stressed-out and overworked. The head of the middle school and the Headmaster are both WONDERFUL, and focused on the right priorities. I can't say enough good things about this school and how happy our daughter is to get to go there.

Many of the teachers are incredible. A few are just OK, but they are being phased out. Fairly advanced classes (all are Honors-level), AP classes too. Some use traditional methods, others do really unique and interesting things. Feels like college sometimes. The campus is quite nice. Very open. The weather is great, hallways are outdoors. So much open space. Incredible views. Lots of glass. Some old, some new buildings. It's a private school in a good neighborhood. Almost all families are upper-middle or upper-income professionals. The campus has security but is not tightly guarded, but that's a good thing because it doesn't feel like a prison (like other area schools). The communication between parents & students, the administration, and the board needs improvement for sure. Parents and students don't really have input in any of the decisions made by the administration. They are pleasant, but the Head of School is the only one with any power. If you want really competitive sports, the school doesn't play in a big league like other local ones, but they usually do pretty well when they compete. There are a variety of clubs, along with art, music, and theater.

We couldn't be happier with this school. It offers the perfect combination of academics, community and extracurricular activities. My kids moved from a local charter school that absolutely killed their love of learning. It's back at the Gregory School.

Tucson has so many options for high school, and I looked at each one objectively for my child and chose Gregory for many reasons. Overall it provides the most well-rounded education, if you care about great academics as well as great art, sports and extracurricular clubs and being held accountable for community projects, then Gregory is the best option. The classes are small, teachers respond immediately to concerns and tutoring is offered daily, and encouraged. The athletic teams have great school spirit, we have highly ranked teams going to states, and art classes that are more inspired than those I took in college. The campus is the most attractive in all of Tucson and the science building is incomparable with beautiful labs and inspired teachers. There is dedicated college counseling with a very devoted counselor and a huge college fair annually. The student body has a large international contingent, my child has friends from South Africa, German, Ukraine, China, Turkey and Brazil. It's incredible! I think it's impossible to find a better option for middle or high school, just send your child for a one day on campus visit and they will not want to go anywhere else.

While it was just renamed, the school is still the same. My daughter is in high school and her teachers are excellent. They all have advanced degrees in the field and they are experienced in the classroom. The academics are great preparation for a top-tier college or university, but they value critical thinking, writing skills, and creativity over pure test prep like you see at many other schools. Students are well rounded because of arts, sports, and extracurriculars. The education is great, but the school is run by its biggest donors who are appointed to the school board.

St. Gregory completely prepared both of my children for college. They went to competitive universities and one has sailed through and graduated, while the other is a junior and doing beautifully. Both will tell you that it was their preparation at St. Gregory that afforded them the opportunity to become critical thinkers, have a connection to their college professors, and most importantly have a desire to be lifelong learners. It was worth every cent....enroll today. I cannot believe that my grown children still think that St. Gregory was the best choice they ever made.

Small class size, excellent curricular approaches, family-like student/faculty relationship, rigorous education in preparation for entry into college/university of choice. Minimal teach-to-state/fed test misdirection. Excellent paving-the-way to the higher level experience. The new leadership is bringing an even more superior approach to giving the students every possible step up in his or her journey through the educational process.

I strongly encouraged my grandson to attend St Gregory's now 3 1/2 yrs ago. I am overwhelmed with the broad education he has received, many of the courses being advanced. The school has provided a medium for him to excel as a leader, as a very creative contributor to the audiovisual needs of the school, as a poised liberal arts educated young man and involvement in school athletics. To put a number on his education, his pre-college testing has placed him in the top 1% nationally. A retired U of A professor.

This is a great school! I highly recommend it to anyone looking for great academics, fun athletics, and to educate the whole child. There are many extracurricular activities and opportunities, for example summer trips to a foreign country to immerse yourself in the language and culture (a big part of learning a language here). Students participate in activities having to do with the core values: character, scholarship, leadership, and innovation. This is not just a school for rich kids. While many of the families here are well-off, many are not. 1/3 of the school is on financial aid, and several students are on scholarship. The teachers here are excellent and very on the ball. Academic-wise, the students are very challenged. They can test into higher level classes, such as those having to do with math or languages. Socially, students are very accepting compared to students from a public middle or high school. Again, this is a wonderful school!

St. Gregory has an outstanding academic course with attention that you will not find at ANY other school. All the grades make a special bonding with each other even though ages differ. You make a special bonding with teachers and the environment is just so welcoming and comfortable that help you study at your fullest.

My children have been at St. Gregory since middle school. We have been very pleased and impressed by the incredibly dedicated, caring and involved teachers/staff. They know my children. They take a special interest in their progress (or lack thereof if there is a problem, the teachers are right on top of it!) The work that my kids are doing in class far surpasses that of any of their peers in town. They are taught how to think critically, how to ask the right questions and to write well. They have to make presentations to their peers and to the school. Learning how to speak in front of groups is a wonderful skill. These kids will be extremely well prepared for college and for whatever career/life path they pursue. St. Gregory is an accredited Independent School, the only one in town. There are national standards that must be met to achieve this.(NAIS.org) This school strives to educate the whole child, not teach to the test. This is a personal choice. If you value that then this is the place for your child. I feel that the school has very strong leadership and a clear direction. The school is also very diverse and has 1/3 on financial aid. Dollars do not talk.

St. Gregory is a wonderful school. My child has been at St. Greg's from middle school and will be here until high school graduation. This school is just as wonderful as the very selective Independent Private Schools where we moved from. The teachers are very caring and committed to bringing out the best in each student. The environment is very positive and the kids are happy. I'm sorry that the person who left the dismal review had such a poor experience. I have spoken to many, many parents and former students and can say that person is definitely in the minority. If you are looking for a school, I can highly recommend St. Gregory for a superb education and a great all around school experience that will benefit your child for a lifetime.

This is an amazing school. My son is in his 4th year at St. Gregory and has received a great education there. We are grateful for the educational rigor, individualized attention and commitment to excellence. My son is a top student and really values being appreciated by the staff & faculty for his intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm. There are many, many bright kids at this school that are thriving. St. Gregory just celebrated their 30th anniversary and has grown in attendance every year that my son has been there. We really believe they are committed to the promises they make in preparing students to be leaders and innovators for the 21st century. It makes me crazy to read reviews like the 2 before this one, undoubtedly written by the same parent, because they clearly had expected an exclusively academic experience and were surprised to find out that St. Gregory offers their students so much more!

To whomever may have read my comment from August 22, 2011. I owe a huge apology if your choice was influence in anyway by that comment. St. Gregory is a sinking ship. The honeymoon period wore off quickly and it was a great disappointment. The curriculum is substandard! There is no expectation and therefore no performance. Every one gets an A as long as they show up. Most of the teachers are okay, but the liberalness of the school is "crazy". I removed my daughter as soon as possible and she return to BASIS. A school I highly recommend, if your student is hardworking. St. Gregory's was a HUGE MISTAKE!

There are some major problems at this school. Staff turnover is high, many of the teachers are disorganized and lacking in ability to control their classes. The discipline of students is sporadic at best and no matter what the infraction a donation will make it all go away. Complain about a teacher and the stock response is your kid is a troublemaker. Teachers use innapropriate language to students. There is a lot of bullying.
