I have two kids attending Sonoran Science Academy- East and Im so glad this is the school we picked for them when my oldest started kindergarten for the 2021-2022 school year. When we were first looking at schools, we were between two schools and even though we only did a virtual I could feel the sense of community. Both my kids are excited for school, and not only do they do their regular curriculum but they enjoy their specials classes and the STEM aspect of the curriculum. Both my kids have different interests and there are clubs to meet both of their needs to do something they enjoy after school.

I have a 4th grader in SSA east, he's been enrolled since 2nd grade. We made the switch from a public school to this charter school and it's been the best academic move we could have made. I am an active parent and like been involved in my child development and offer support where is needed for him such as partnering with the teacher to help support at home where he is needs it, public school wasn't offering that and when I would request a partnership with his teacher she would always tell me it wasn't required for him since he had decent grades, but I didn't just want him to have decent grades I wanted to support where he needed to give that extra push, when we made the switch to SSA it was a 160 degree change, I would voice my concerns and teacher and support teacher always listen and give me feedback and ways I can support where is needed, he is listen to and so am I and we are able to give the support and guidance. SSA east also offers so many afterschool programs that help my sons development and needs, we have travels 2 years in a row to the international robotics competition in Maryland and both times have been such amazing experiences and have offered so much knowledge to my son. He is also part of the chess team and it's been amazing how much growth and challenges that has bridged to him he has evolved from the shy little guy to a very confident person.

the only bad teacher is the social studies but i have been told that the old social studies teacher is good there is also a problem of most of the kids not knowing that they are being annoying and hitting kids is not ok.

We have attended this school since they were at the previous location on Broadway. Teachers have shifted, new building purchased, and admin has shifted. As of today, the school is absolutely outstanding. The administration works incredibly well together. There have been an increase in community activities, which is lovely to have again. (due to the pandemic). Our athletics program is superb. We have an incredible Esports team. We have a cheerleading squad. Our Math Counts team went to the state competition this year! There have been so many wonderous improvements. The principal has a clear vision. Teachers care about their students. Any issues are addressed immediately. We now have a guidance counselor, who has been an asset to the school. They have music, art, PE, computer science, and AVID classes!

I highly recommend this school!

I am a Grandparent, and my Grandchildren attended. I really loved that this school took the time to support my Grandchildren. They have special needs, and they did everything they could to evaluate and support them where they needed. They offered services to support their special needs, speech and tutoring! They loved the Science explored there and all the Science Fair events! I loved attending their concerts with music and picnics for all the families! Thank you!

I love SSA-East, and I have been with them over 8 years! My children attended and I know many others who attend. SSA Administrators and teachers, put their heart and soul into the school! They care so much for the community, and plan family events that bring everyone together to get to know each other! SSA meets your kids where they are at academically and continue to challenge them, inspire them, support them throughout the year. They offer fun clubs and sports that teach them about the community spirit, and how to Be Respectful, Responsible and Kind. They acknowledge them, get to know them, and hold them to high standards!

Hello everyone,

I am a proud parent of a student who attends Sonoran Science Academy!
We had recently received an email regarding COVID-19. I automatically assumed the worse so I called the school-I was the transferred with Coach Trejo> I asked coach Trejo what was the email regarding and he let us know about the other school districts going to mask mandates. Coach was very clear and honest about us, parents holding the power in making decisions for our kids. The school wasn't going to mandate but recommend. We were very happy with hearing his support with parents handling their children's decisions! We are very happy this school isn't going above any laws or regulations and we thank the faculty for understanding.

We moved our daughter to this school in the 4th grade, before moving her she was testing below grade level after one semester with Mr. Lopez she was at and above and by the end of fourth grade she went from being below grade level to above. I am active in the school community and know that Mr. Lopez's 4th-grade class over all grew and placed at or above grade level, at the start of 4th grade many students were below.

We enrolled our child into SSA-B after we felt they needed more of a challenge. Our daughter moved to this school at the start of 4th grade. My husband and I were surprised with the dedication of her teacher, Mr. Lopez. Mr. Lopez's policy regarding homework or any classwork that he gives is extremely helpful. He does not give busy work, he feels that all work should serve some purpose other than to keep kids busy. He has high expectations for his students and we have to say, that when we heard he was going to be our daughter's teacher again in the 5th grade we were extremely happy. Compared to past years our daughter's growth was amazing. When we started the year our child was behind, by the end of the first semester with Mr. Lopez she was testing not only at but above grade level in reading and math. We were happy when we got our daughters AIMS score that showed she tested above grade level in all her subjects. I would reccommend Mr. Lopez and SSA-B to anyone.

Low standards. Over crowded. My first grader never got to play on playground. Bad schedule. Bad management. Not a clean environment. Not enough staff. Over worked staff. I could go on and on but it is not worth my time. We changed school promptly. We were beyond disappointed in this school. If you have any standards for your child do not bring them here.

This is one of the best school in town. I have 2 kids in this school 7th and 3rd grade. The teachers are all very helpful, staff are very nice and hard working. In this school teachers and higher staff are trying hard and working hard for each kid to succeed. School has a very friendly environment, most of the parents, teachers and kids know each other.

The students have been allowed to see fighting, bullying, name calling, yelling, bias and meanness from too many of the staff. I don't feel it's possible to teach what you don't have or display.
The overall behavior of the elementary teachers is the opposite of honest, integrity and fairness.

I can't stress enough how terrible this school is. We started out wanting all of our children to progress all the way through 12th grade at a Sonoran school. Not on your life now. It starts in the parking lot and works all the way through the head office. One look at the filthy bathrooms including the staff bathroom should have made us run, used feminine products out in the open repeatedly. K-2nd has had serious staff infighting for years. The turnover is high and several teachers I've spoken to directly have named teacher bullying as the reason. They can't seem to manage the older women and a bully who all blatantly favor students, parents and teachers over others. They sit in the front foyer and talk about people. Hello? We can hear you!
There is an issue with staff sharing personal info about students. The woman dean (not Mrs. Jackdayo) and the principal are awful; they don't return phone calls, they make excuses instead of problem solve, are never on campus. That female dean is very rude & empirical. Also, anytime we have an issue with her behavior, she blames someone else and refuses responsibility. She has zero people skills yet she works in a school? When we took our complaints to the head office, we were told there was nothing that could be done about her because their hands were tied. What???
This was a wonderful school in it's beginning. My son attended the 1st year. This new principal took a great school and ruined it. It pales in comparison to the SSA-B of 2009. Our youngest has had nightmarish experiences as have we when addressing them.Teachers call them cry babies, literally yell and scream at them, punish them CONSTANTLY and militarize lunch time. After going in repeatedly to observe, we finally just left. And I only refer to K-2, you know, the years when kids decide if they like or hate school! Poor 4th-8th grade teachers don't have a chance to make a difference there. Shame on the admin for allowing the staff to behave so badly.
Children are not shorts adults. They're still learning or should be! Kellond Elem is a much kinder, successful, organized, safer, profession solution to elementary education.
My comment may not be scientifically stated but it's important for others to know about these people. They destroy the educational ability and experience with bad behavior. Who cares if you can teach is you're mean?

What's good: The teachers teach a great curriculum, multicultural environment, since there are few good options in the area, this is the better one. The elementary Science Olympiad teacher is excellent. What's bad: Too much yelling, lack of organization, frequent last minute changes, a few busy-body teachers. I'm sure the principals know who they are.

This school is better than most TUSD schools. The kids excel if the parents are serious about the kids getting a good education and they must participate. The staff is mostly good. There are a few bad apples and the definitely ruin it for everyone else. On a scale of 1 to 10 I give it a 6, it's meh, not horrible but not in the top 25% either. The physical building it terrible and old and the parking lot gravel shreds the children but the principal has made improvements so it's not as bad. There are issues with the on our deans causing hard feelings and upset and the other is way over burdened and has an unfair share of work. That said. MOST of us really love and care for our students just alike at most schools.

Well, the principal asked us to write a review and today my daughter reminded me to do it. I taught at TUSD for 35 yrs. I have grandchildren at this school and DM. DM is wonderful but this school has fallen from a high standard. Ms. Diana & Ms. Xochey are very rude to parents. I hate to see them at school functions. For several years we've watched Xochey get worse. Why so bossy and mean? Ms. Marinela has been complaining about something since the day I laid eyes on her years ago. The new woman in the office is very rude. She's good with the children but not suited for her new position, always screaming and no finesse. We miss the inviting, loving atmosphere Mrs. Patricia created and so do my grandkids. She made them feel cared for & safe. If we had our druthers, Mr. Hakan, Mr. Jensen, Ms. Morley, Mrs. McConnell & Ms. Ashley would teach them for years until ours were done with school. This isn't what the principal wanted but school is a place that children and families should want to be. The staff is really making that harder & harder.

I used to believe in the school and their mission. I brought friends into the group. My family is disappointed in the poor community here. When the new SPED teacher came, we thought there would finally be something better. No. Just more of the same For my daughter. The administration is constantly making last minute policy changes. They are very inconsistent and make excuses instead of solving issues. There's a woman who screams at the children and parents in the morning at drop off. The middle school teachers and a 3rd grade teacher scream a lot. I can't wait until summer when we leave. It's now very unprofessional and petty.

My daughter goes to the Kindergarten at this school. She loves her teacher and even wants to be a teacher when she grows up. Her teachers have done a great job and she has learned a lot since she started there, including history, math, science, and languages. I really appreciate the teacher's efforts to help each student.

My wife and I really enjoy the school for the most part. My daughter adores her kindergarten teacher and has really done well in her class. The material is fairly advanced for a kindergarten level and has challenged her to perform at a higher level. The only problem with the school for me personally is the expectation for the students to be on time and punctual, however it would seem that the staff is not held to that same expectation. Every event we have attended always seems to start late and staff members scramble to prepare for events at the last minute. I would strongly encourage the leadership of the school to change this practice since it illustrates a lack of professionalism in my book. Overall I would rate the school for my daughters first year an above average for her exceptional teacher s abilities, to address concerns about the children, and her overall involvement in my daughter s academic performance.

Substitutes that have no experience at all in handling kids. The principal impossible to reach to discuss situations at class. Dining room with a prison like environment. This school isn't the norm. This is why my kids attend. It is a multicultural college prep with higher than normal expectations. If as a parent you want easy then go elsewhere. I don't want your "lazy" keeping my "motivated winner" from succeeding. Yes teachers have an accent but so do college/university instructors. Its reality! Turkish culture isn't forced. This school is ran more like a business than it is a school. Seems like there is always a request for more money. Also, I understand diversity and kids learning a different language, but turkish culture is being forced into each student. There has been numerous teachers and students that have left the school due to numerous complaints of the staff. I think this school has a different agenda than just teaching students to the best of their ability. Im sure you can figure out what the agenda is with a brief search on google. Alot of the teachers in the elementary are great teachers, but once you get into middle school...very different story. The teachers speak very broken english and the students have a hard time understanding the teachers. The teachers yell and discipline the students alot more than they should as well. No matter the grade level, kids have about 3 to 6 hours worth of homework a night. Are the parents doing the teaching, or should teachers be doing their job instead of running a business and disciplining our children? STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS SCHOOL.... BEST CHOICE WE MADE WAS TO LEAVE IT!!!!

SSA Broadway is a God send to my family. My son is special needs & is thriving here. We've been to 8 schools prior to last year but we've found our home. We couldn't be happier with them. It's a small school and I know some of the staff and parents drive over 50 miles a day due to their dedication to this school. Ms. Tracy is an amazing support to our son. Mrs. Jakdeo and Mr. Kochak are fantastic leaders to their staff. While there is one very loud middle school teacher, she's just very loud. All of my children love Mrs. H, Ms. Tess, Mrs. McFarland and Ms. Patricia like family. We're glad that the front desk staff makes sure that they are aware of the happenings in and around school keeping it safe. Thankfully, they make it their business to know who's around and why. When we leave our children at school we know that those four ladies will take care of them and love them. Even on the most chaotic days we enjoy the professional, funny, welcoming environment. The parent involvement is outstanding. Communication is better than ever this year. Mrs, Jakdeo, Mrs. Morley and Ms. Nix mix great teaching, disciplined classrooms & challenging curriculum. This is why our kids love school.

I completely agree that Teachers at this school act completely overwhelmed and uncaring regarding the children with needs. If your child has any special needs STAY AWAY from this school. I visited the school on several occasions for my kid and the way teachers talk to kids disgusts me, they are not nice or understanding at all They just yell at kids at the top of their lungs when they do something wrong it was shocking the way the talk to kids, yes i understand they should be punished when something they do is wrong but the way they talk to them is plain out rude and shows how little patience they have for kids. It's a good school curriculum wise but the teachers are rude, the office ladies are plain out rude and very nosy, i just don't understand how some of the people here have jobs when they talk down to kids and parents.

They're the best thing that's ever happened to my grandson. After years of mediocre, we have arrived in Shangri La. This is where the seeds of education are planted.

We joined this school last year. Things were pretty chaotic with a new principal but this year is much better. The staff as a whole is amazing. I do see a couple of glaring issues, though. First is the assistant principal of marks. Not only did she decline a meeting each time my wife and I asked (4), she is very cold, empirical and impersonal. Each time I asked her a question she replied that she would have to see. We shouldn't have to beg to see her or get an answer. I wonder if she has 'seen' yet. We are still waiting. Secondly, this is not a safe campus or at the very least, it doesn't appear to be. I do see the head principal trying to make improvements but the property is just horrible. That terrible parking lot cannot be disguised as a playground, it doesn't matter where you're from. What keeps us at the school follows. The main principal and the principal of discipline. He's a creative leader and very moral. She is firm, fair and unbiased. The world needs more like her. The secretaries in front- we trust them and feel like they're our family. At times we didn't like new rules, but they always brought us around. Two of your best assets. Keep up the good work but be safer.

This school used to be fabulous. Now it has become overcrowded and less than satisfactory. In my opinion, rather than hire qualified teachers and staff, they're hiring anyone with the proper credentials to fill open spots. My daughter did so well last year, but this year she has a teacher who I believe probably wouldn't have been hired by any of the school districts. Unfortunately this will be out last year at this school. They could be doing way better...or at least move to a bigger building!

My son has been attending SSA-B since he was in Kindergarten. The first impression of the school is incredible. It has a strong curriculum, a strong core value for education and a great reputation. We have for the most part been enjoying our sons time at the school. As he has grown and needed the assistance of the special education department is where we feel that is one of the areas in which the school can improve. In the 5 years that we have been at the school they have had 4 different teachers and they all have seemed completely overwhelmed and uncaring regarding the children with needs. There are a few teachers at the school that are incredible, Ms. Houston, Ms. Abbott, Ms. Miriam and Ms. Morley, have gone above and beyond for our son and are the reasons that we have stayed at the school. The principal is more interested in test scores then the actual students and the upper administration only cares about the Sunset campus. The school has potential and if they would follow through as they have been saying for 5 years and move the middle school to a seperate campus it would be even better.

The best school I ever saw. Great community with a friendly family environment, staff are caring and respectful, kids are happy. Academics is taken as a priority and there is constant improvement in schools' results. When I brought my 4 kids to this school, there was care and respect during the process of enrollment and still continues after that. My kids had no fear or hesitation in the beginning and are very happy now. They love their teachers and administration. I would highly recommend this school to everyone.

GREAT TEACHERS, GREAT SCHOOL!!! I have been with this school since it first year on Broadway. I had two kids in TUSD for two years and became very frustrated with the way it was being handled. My son was slugged in the face and nothing was being done. When we started at SSAB we were welcomed with open arms and encouraged to speak our minds. We were listened to, which is something TUSD didn't do. Now I have five kids going to SSAB next year. We loce the closeness of thw people. The teachers and parents go out of their way to make school a better experience for the students. My kids love going to school there.

Overall I am quite pleased with this school. So far all of the teachers that I have dealt with seem dedicated to the kids and a good education. There doesn't seem to be a mission of the dreaded "political correctness" that is ruining other schools. The parents that are disappointed in the academics probably need to be more involved in their child's day to day assignments and not just expect the school to do all of the heavy lifting. There is an American flag in the lobby and the pledge of allegiance is available to those that want to participate. This school consistently places well above average in academic competitions. That is not an accident or luck. Spend some time in the lobby and you will see that the ladies at the front desk are equally as dedicated. We intend to send our child to SSA High School at Davis Monthan when the time comes. I have no problem in signing my name to this posting. Don Lovitt

Currently this school is a work in progress. Elementary school has a much stronger program that the middle school. The new principal that started last year (2012) is in the process of polishing up this diamond in the rough and good things seems to be happening to make this so. Good teachers are helping support this effort in the elementary portion. Still working on the middle school portion to find the right teachers which are hard to find for this age group already. They do seem to be spending the money to upgrade resources for the students. Just taking a long while to make things happen, which in this economy is par for the course.

My ire is with the staff of the school. They are very disorganized, taking over a week to admit new students (when through experience other schools will take 24 hours), and the two women up front were plain rude. Life is stressful, that I understand, but there was no reason for the school to remain unorganized for the semester my children were there.

Our family has been to a few elementary schools and we are happy to now be at SSA-B. The teachers are dedicated to their students and their school. Our daughter is in a class where she is challenged in her best subject. She has also received tremendous help in her struggling subject. Her teachers understood that a curriculum is not "one size fits all" and they went out of their way to find what it was that my daughter needed to succeed. I am so proud of my daughter's growth this year and we adore her teachers !

I am in complete shock! The "Geology Rocks" performance that the 3rd grade classes put on was a FIRST CLASS production. I have seen many SSA Broadway "performances" , but none of them were even close to this caliber! My child had fun auditioning and then performing. This was a great experience for these kids and a lot of them were taken out of their comfort zones, so we could see their hidden talents.

It's very confusing situation. This was my daughter's first year here and the consistent complaint from parents when I first started as well as now that we are finishing is that their communication needs a total revamp. There is a lot of gossip from the staff and what appears like a lack of follow thru on supervising the students. Some teachers have their morning routine down and are outside greeting children as they come to school. The 1st and 2nd grade however had many occasions when they were running to pick up their kids from outside. It's just appeared that they were unprepared for the day. Which if you ask me if they want the kids to come prepared everyday to learn with appropriate supplies, etc. Well then they should be the example. There is not an appropriate playground for the kids when they are at recess and therefore every child ends up joining the scratched up knee club. They play out in the parking lot when all classes are out. Other than that I am pleased with my daughter's growth in reading, writing and math. My daughter is on an IEP though. No school will be perfect but academically I believe they have the foundation they just need to follow through.

I agree with the last comment about Teachers dedication. I know how my kids feel about them and how they perform. They gained lots in Math, Science, Language arts, Social studies. one more thing to tell, If a student cannot take what is taught correctly, that's their problem, not teachers.Parents should be behind them in their studies all the time. Bottom line is this school is a excelling school for us.

I have never seen more dedicated teachers in any other school. Teachers at this school don't hesitate to take their personal time to educate students. You can see staff working hard after school hours, weekends and holidays. It would be foolish not to appreciate this dedication.

This school showed promise at first but went down hill fast after the original admin. and teachers of grades 6-8 left. Their teacher turn over in these grades is too high for something not to be going wrong. When rating this school one needs to differentiate between the elementary and middle school grades because the elementary teachers are great but after that take you kids elsewhere for success. As a teacher who follows their children s education very closely, take it from me. The Middle school teachers at Sonoran Science Academy Broadway operate well below expectation or to that of other positive reviews herein. Just look at the trend of their AIMS test results over the last 4 years fot grades 6-8.

Great school on paper only. Horrible experience with staff and teachers for several years. This school is a joke. My child was behind not ahead of children at other schools while attending SSA. My child had to work very hard at the new school to catch up after being taught at SSA for several years.

I have two children who attend SSAB since it opened and they both love it. It has been a blessing to have a school that challenges them and at the same time helps to strengthen any weaknesses. The teachers I have had interaction with have been great, they cared so much for my children and went out of their way to make my kids feel that way. I have heard the rumblings about foreign teachers and administration but have never experienced that problem myself .

We tried our child in TUSD in 1st grade for a week - no discipline, no homework. We are so glad to have SSA-Broadway near us and that we got a spot. The school has high expectations, and we do 60 to 90 minutes of HW a night. The administrators are constantly having fundraisers and activities to raise money for the school. Everyone works hard here - teachers, students, parents and administrators to make it work. We are very happy with our choice.

We have been there since it opened 3 yrs ago and it is the Best school ever!!!! We are like a big happy family and work together for what ever is needed. My daughter loves her school and whiches school was all yr. 5 star school best school ever!!!!

This a wonderful school. At the beginning of the school year I was scared my daughter won't like it because she came from a private school, but so far my daughter loves this school and is always looking forward to going everyday. She is far advance in math and science plus all other aspects of the curriculum in this school compared to her friend who goes to a private school. I never regret transferring her to this school.

Moving to a state that ranks relatively low in the nation for education was something my husband and I were very concerned about. After a challenging experience last year, we moved our son to Sonoran Science Academy this school year. I have nothing but positive things to say about the experience. My son is thriving in this environment and is challenged in ways that even the gifted programs at his old school did not provide. There are little disruptions, caring teachers and an administration that truly does care about the kids and takes the time to know them. I have found the parent community to be very open and receiving as well. The only drawback i see is the fact that some activities and events at the school are not well communicated to parents, but these are things the administration is committed to working on. Overall, I'm thrilled with the choice.
