I would strongly caution parents, especially parents of color, before sending their children to Alamos Elementary School based on my family’s recent experience.

My 10-year-old son was the target of a verified racist incident where two students programmed a school-issued iPad to say “Amir is a N-word” out loud during class in front of students and staff. According to administration, the incident was confirmed and the students admitted to it.

What has been most disappointing is not only the incident itself, but also the handling and communication afterward.

When I initially contacted the school trying to get information regarding this serious situation, I was told by the front office that the Assistant Principal was out sick and that the Principal was not aware of or tracking the incident because it is “a big school.” During my later conversation with Principal Jenniffer Aynesworth, I was informed that information was inaccurate.

I also felt dismissed during my attempts to get answers as a concerned parent advocating for my child. Instead of immediately treating this situation with the seriousness it deserved, the communication was inconsistent and at times felt unprofessional.

Principal Jenniffer Aynesworth further informed me that the school would not remove or relocate the students responsible “because of one student.” I was also told that if my son felt uncomfortable remaining around the students involved, my son would instead be moved from the classroom.

As a parent, that is unacceptable to me. A child who experiences racial harassment should not feel like they are the one being displaced while the students responsible remain comfortable in the same environment.

This situation has emotionally affected my son deeply. He spent the night crying because he was hurt and struggling to understand why this happened to him.

Parents deserve to know how situations involving racism, student safety, and parent concerns are handled before deciding where to send their children.

I agree with the one reviewer there is a serious mean, unprofessional, rudeness underlying this school the test scores are great yes but the unprofessional and rudeness from the staff is outrageous! My daughter was slapped in the face by a boy the principal and the school did nothing big on anti bullying (yeah right) . When I requested to talk to the teacher the teacher got in my face and said “what are you gonna do about it!!!!” Unacceptable for a teacher! I went home and cried:( I’ve never been in a situation like that not even in high school. I went straight to the district to report this teacher thinking she would be reprimanded but to my dismay this teacher gets in a parent’s face the same as me saying to the parent “hit me if dare”What in the world!!!! This teacher was reported and sadly nothing was done to this teacher and she still teaches this day:( I had to take my child out of Alamos. I am writing this to any parent that may experience any of these incidents call the police and do not depend on the principal or staff to help you.

My kid can be very alpha ,I have seen her change as the year goes by , she’s still learning in kinder but her everyday grading has been a Green for the most part.

Principal very high energy and is very involved , the school events sometimes not as organized or they need to anticipate that most parents at this school will attend the events and anticipate the high turnout .

Even at kindergarten level , there’s take home HW every day, reading everyday . So as a parent you have to be involved and your kid will keep up .

Our room 1 kinder teacher is great ! Can be firm with the kids but I think the kids are dealt with effectively .

My twin boys attended the SDC Pre-k at Alamos. They were in 2 differebt classes. Both of their teachers were exceptional. They were amazing teachers and helped my boys come so far in regards to their speech and preparing them for kindergarten. These teachers obviously love their jobs and go above and beyond to make learning a memorable experience for the kids.

Terrible. The principal and assistant principal seem to hate their jobs. They NEVER EVER EVER are smiling. They are NEVER in front of the school to greet students. They are never interacting with students or parents. The teachers used to seem like they were happy working there and were proud of their school, in the past few years the whole demeanor of the staff has diminished. It has become a very sad place to be at school and there are MANY parents who no longer want their children to go to school there. Alamos used to be the cream of the crop school to be at. So sad that it has gone so downhill. My children are top students and never get in trouble, so this review is not being written in response to anything negative that happened to us there. Just stating the facts and a very involved parent's observations of the school over the past 4 years.

My children have received a wonderful education at Alamos. The teachers that my children have had are exceptional. Having my children transfer from a private school for their first three years of education, I was a little concerned that they would not be challenged enough. I made sure to let the teachers know my concerns up front and I feel that they listened and my children have been challenged every year. I have a fifth grade child promoting to middle school next year and I feel that she has received a great education in her elementary years and is prepared for middle school. I feel very lucky to have Alamos as our home school. There is no perfect school. My family has had a great experience and I'm appreciative of everything the teachers and staff have done in providing a wonderful education for my children!

After reading some of the posted reviews here there are common denominators at this school , the front office needs to be more friendly/welcoming towards parents and some children . A feeling of despair and being sterile is present as soon as you walk through the doors at Los Alamos . There is favortism with certain parents , depending on how much you volunteer or give financially . After speaking with many parents they become disengaged from the school for fear of reprisals against them or their child , there seems to be a lack of empathy that is pervasive at this school . Common Core has many parents confused , upset and befuddled. It is impossible to describe this system (confusing) . A lot of school activities , lunches blah , school is clean . The leadership at this school needs to hold accountable everyone working here to a higher standard , which doesn't seem to be the case . Los Alamos has potential to be an overall great school , but not as it stands now , high test scores don't always reflect the true nature of a good education. Advice for parents , be involved with your children and keep the leadership , teachers and front staff accountable. Remember they work for you .

This School has an underlying mean spirit to it , from the moment you walk into the front office and encounter the clerks , to the teachers who show favortism to certain students/parents and are unhelpful if they take a dislike to you , to the principal is disengaged and only cares about funding her career . This is all about stats for the school at all costs , no personal relationships with the students , get em' in and get em' out as long as scores stay high and don't ask questions , we are the almighty TVUSD and you are lowly parents . ............NEXT !!!!!!

Great School - Awesome Staff! Amazing how many people rate the school poorly because of a negative experience with front office staff. I understand they are the first line of contact with the public but seriously, if you choose to remove your child from Alamos because the receptionist (or you?) had a bad day, by all means, go ahead but you will be robbing your child of an excellent public education from a staff of extraordinarily talented and motivated teachers. Both of my children attend Alamos and I know for a fact, these teachers bust their butts to meet the needs of ALL of their students!

The school has a high rating or test scores. We thought that the school would of been welcoming to new families but we were wrong! The office staff is rude. Not a great first impression. Communication with teachers is difficult unless you are there to volunteer. My child got hurt and I didn't find out until I saw a scrape across her face after school. I have tried to be positive but there are too many red flags! My children will not be attending next year!

This school is top tier. I was so pleased with the level of academic excellence that this school strives for. The overall mood of the school is happy. I never remembered school that way. My daughter and I are very fortunate to have moved to this area and have Alamos as our local school. Support the Owls and the Music program. This school is excellent, thank you!

Awesome. no complaints at all. Nice staff. Mrs Belisario is a very nice teacher. the kids are well taken care of and they learn a lot.

A wonderful school where the Principal and Teachers really care about the kids! I do agree with other parents that the the staff @ front desk really need some help with her attitudes. One star off b/c of the front desk.

I have 5 children oldest being graduated high school and in all those years of moving around (military) and dealing with new schools I have never complained until this one. My son is not always focused on all task and therefor a problem to them. His teacher last year was very good at communicating with me but his teacher this year is a nightmare. She has made 3 comments to him this year that we belittling. I went to the principle 2 of the times but give up since she doesn't seem to have a child's best interest at heart and has done nothing. After hearing other parents stories it's obvious that nothing will be done. She needs more then anger management classes... They have some great teachers but some probably need to find another field to go into. As for the front office... The nurse is great, Lori is great but the others aren't there for the kids... Just a pay check.

Alamos is an Excellent school and has very high standards. It is always best to communicate any and all problems with our childs teacher to resolve any issues or concerns we may have with our child/children. These issues or concerns are not for the principal to resolve as she is not in the classroom, or the person the issue is about. It is always best to disregard story telling from other parents, as the information isn't always accurate. One parent says this, then another adds to it and before you know it you have one hell of a story to tell the next parent you meet. Besides, it is the parents that just can't seem to be happy, why I don't know. Our children, well they all love it here at Alamos even when their parents try to convince others that they are miserable. Believe me they are not. The Children At Alamos Are Extremely Happy, Enjoyable Children who Love Going To Alamos!

Everyone is right about SOME of the staff in the front office. But they have been great with my son and the teachers are sincere and doing an excellent. Remember people, the children don't spend the school day in the office with the staff but in the classroom with these great teachers where it counts the most.

School curriculum is great, however, the staff (front desk) is not so great. Have been treated rudely. Needed paperwork filled out and the attitude the lady gave me was very upsetting and I am disappointed with her. She is the reason I am giving the school 4 stars. If there are people needing to be layed off, she should be the first to go. Parents do not need to be treated without respect....THERE WAS A POSTER IN THE LOBBY ABOUT GIVING AND RECEIVING RESPECT!!!!

My son is in Kindergarten at Alamos and is having a wonderful experience. I am a teacher in another district and have been very impressed with the teachers and the curriculum. The kindergarten team works well together and are providing excellent instruction. Alamos does have excellent test scores but I believe it is because they are using appropriate and effective teaching strategies and should be model to other schools.

This is our first year at Alamos. My children are in 1st and 5th. We moved here from Phoenix, AZ and I can honstly say my 5th grader was SO behind. I really believe that yes while there is a lot of homework and the teachers are stern they are commited to making our children sucessful. 3 days a week teachers take their own time to make sure the kids understand and when my 5th grader did "stress out" they were there to support her and encourage her. While I do have a hard time with my child getting overwhelmed, this school will make them stonger to head off to middle school and high school. This is a really good district and since we can compare I would choose hard over easy for my kids any day of the week. I say Bravo to the teachers.

I am giving 4 stars because so far I have been very happy with our children's teachers, and to me, that is what is most important. An unfriendly front office staff (which yes, is sometimes true) and an overbearing principal (which is also sometimes true) is part of it, but it comes down to my children and their teachers and the level of education they receive, which I feel is excellent at this school. Parents who are considering this school or leaving, sit back and consider what is more important to you - your ability to bring siblings to class while you volunteer, or a quiet, more focused classroom for your child. A courteous front office staff, or a caring and effective teacher. Your perception of school spirit or an excellent academic curriculum for your child.

I ve been happy with all but 1 of my children's teachers since starting this school. Overall, the school is extremely focused on their test scores, and is run accordingly. I want my children to love to LEARN and I feel that element is seriously lacking in this school. My children are being taught how to take a test, and there is tremendous pressure to perform well. My children were stress cases during state testing time. On top of that, parental input is not valued at this school. The school has a cold, clinical feel to it, and there is no sense of school community. The front office staff is not warm or welcoming. MANY parents have pulled their children out of this school already for a variety of reasons. Consider this: Within 4 miles, there are 3 other elem. schools that are at, or near capacity. Why not Alamos?

As an involved parent I am VERY MUCH AWARE of CAL ED CODE 51101.b.3.G and many other codes. If you are an involved parent then you don't need anyone telling you about your rights. The parent talking about this code should also read it over again, because I don't believe at Alamos your rights as a parent to be involved in your childs education have been violated in any way. If you are an angry or hostile parent who has some issues with the school, and you volunteer in a classroom, then you can and should be asked to no longer volunteer in that class. Our children are there to be taught and should feel safe at all times. We are adults and should be there to set an example to our children. Our children at Alamos are Happy, if only their Parents could see it!!!

This is to all the parents that continue to complain on this site about Alamos .LEAVE! You have other options. I am a proud parent of Alamos. I love the staff, teachers and Mrs. Kubly. My kids are getting a GREAT education. Get over yourself - be happy LEAVE!

The only reason I did not give this school a 1 was that I have been happy with my teachers at this school...but that's about it! There is no sense of school spirit or community, parents are not made to feel welcome by the administration while on campus, and a parent's opinion is looked at as questioning the decisions of professional educators! If only parents knew that according to Cal Ed Code 51101.b.3.G parents have the right to be "participating, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their own child or the total school program." Wow! They sure aren't going to tell you that!! A few concerned parents have recently expressed some concerns and they have faced the consequences! If things don't change soon, I will be pulling my kids out for next year! Our kids deserve better!!

I am a teacher at another school and have 3 children at Alamos. My children love the school, their teachers and their friends. The scores are good. I guess as a parent, everyone needs to decide if the personal things they do not like directly impact their child. If not, then maybe its the parent and not the school.

If it wasn't for teachers I would change my kid to another school. Let's start by taking about that RUDE front office lady. Who ever hired her needs to be hung. I have seen first hand how she talks to parents and students. She's been rude to me as well. Then that principle! How she treats some of those teachers is unreal. For those that agree with her, she's great, but any teacher that does not agree with her, different story. If the economy wasn't so bad, I bet a lot teachers would transfer out of that school. If parents only knew how many teachers can't stand her. The stuff that goes on there? Have any PTA friends, talk to them!

Alamos is doing what it can with what funds it has. Due to budget cuts, creative, smart ideas need to come into action for our kids to still get enrichment. Our principal , staff, and current PTA have done just that. Smartboards are in most classrooms, and teachers are doing their best as the PE /music teacher. Many grade levels have still put on musicals despite not having a music teacher. The staff works over and beyond what is asked of them. The principal helped begin a foundation so that our children can be enriched despite state budget cuts. Alamos if full of hard working staff and students. Hoot hoot!

As a teacher I can honestly say I have never worked for a better school and administrator. I feel so blessed to work at a school with an administrator that has the students and their education as her top priority and a group of teachers so willing to work together.

I have been a parent at Alamos for the past 6 years. I have always had a positive experience at the school. The entire staff have always treated my children as individuals and provided an education geared towards their needs and strengths. Yes, the principal has a vision to bring back music arts to the school since the state has cut funding for these programs. Parents are asked to donate to a foundation to achieve this goal - it's a small donation when compared to the cost of private music lessons. As a parent, I appreciate the knowledge and dedication of all staff.

I am so happy that I moved here. The education that my child received here helped her to move on and be prepared for middle school. She has ADHD.There was a noticeable difference in how much she learned because of this school. I love the principal. She means business and does her job well.

My kindergartener is receiving a first rate education at Alamos. It s disheartening to read the reviews from my fellow Alamos parents. It s unfortunate that instead of using their energy to promote the learning that is happening at the school they post unfounded and uneducated complaints. As a teacher in another district with 10 years experience, and I can say with professional competence (that I can safely assume is not the case with those who question the pedagogical practices of the principal) that Alamos is doing EXACTLY what a school is supposed to do. Those who suggest that teaching the standards is a negative aspect are terribly misinformed. State standards guide instruction. The parties and field-trips that are missing are not the responsibilities of the school. Parties and excursions are OUR jobs as parents. I send my child to school to learn. What do you send your child to school for?

We've had issues with both the current teacher and the principal. The principal is very haughty and condescending towards the parents when attempting to mediate a conflict between teacher and parent. There are no field trips, extremely limited PE that basically consists of running laps for the first graders. There is an extremely limited music program, limited to two classes of 4th/5th graders, and that's only been in the last couple of months, and after repeated hitting up parents for donations to their music foundation. They teach to the test, and that is it. There is no challenging the student, just teaching to the test/grade standards.

I am really not terribly impressed. The reason the test scores are so high is that they teach to the test. That is ALL they do. My daughter's teacher says nasty and belittling things to the students! Then, tries to blow smoke at me when questioned about it. NO music, No language,NO art, practically no P.E. Only expensive add-on field trips like Space Camp. My daughter will be going to a charter school next year.
