Like the others, for my experience when Mr. Stack was the principle the school was truly wonderful! Unfortunately, after he left and new leadership took over, the school declined very quickly. This year has gotten so bad, I decided to transfer my student out as quickly as possible. Many classrooms do not have permanent teachers, and are frequently taught by substitutes. They are given packets with little to no instruction or guidance. Because of this, the students are not consistently learning what is required for their grade level and WILL NOT be properly prepared for the next one. Several experienced teachers have left the school, been dismissed, or resigned mid-year due to conflicts with leadership, aka the principal(s). This has clearly affected the stability of the learning environment. Communication with parents is also very poor. Important updates about classrooms or student matters are often shared at the last minute, leaving families with little time to respond or plan. The current principal, who began the year as the assistant principal after the previous principal left, is not qualified to be leading, she is rude to the students and dismissive of issues when they arise. Problems are often ignored rather than resolved. I'm glad we left this school because if they continue with this principal, I assure you, your child(ren) will be held back both academically and socially.

This school used to be wonderful. Since Mr. Stack left, it's gone seriously downhill. Most of the best teachers have left, the remaining ones are holding out hope for some improvement---because they love the kids so much.
The lack of communication from the administration, lack of concern for the parent-teacher relationship. It's devastating how quickly this place has fallen in just two years.

I am excited my daughter will no longer attend this school;. It has been a horrible experience for her. From being picked on to horrible teaching. What I dislike about this school. No instruments, I hate the uniforms. All they learn is Math all day Math. The teachers are not supportive. I never knew about this site till the principal put in parent square basically begging us to write a good review. Do not send your kid to this school! look at the low test scores. My child deserves a better education. This was at my convince . I will never again. BMA pick and choose who they want to exceed its a lot of favoritism. I rather my kid go to a real Berkeley school where she can learn more than just math. I gave it 1 star only because I had to label it otherwise they get a negative.

Looking for a Kindergarten school for my first born 9 years ago I was looking for a very specific atmosphere. I needed what I could feel like was a family/village for my baby and I. I went to information meetings as well as filled out and application. I called alot during the process to see if her application was processed-which they never discouraged me from doing!!! Once accepted I was so happy! She was 4 when she started and completed K-8 at BMA just last year. I promise that my children and I have never felt so safe, respected, loved and appreciated outside of thier EHS/HS Community!! Once they learned our names in the first week or so I knew I found the family school I was looking for!! I sent families I knew were searching for schools straight to BMA! I still do!! Now my youngest has been there from K-6 and will remain until her 8th grade academic year is complete! Don't just take my word for it- apply!

As a parent of both a former student and current student here at BMA, their time here at this school has always been great. The accesible teachers/ supporting staff have made elementary and middle school an excellent experience for both of my kids. Not to mention the principal Mr. Stack is great as both a person and principal, who with his experience as a former teacher and enthusiastic personality makes him the right person for the job. The teachers also deserve a lot of credit because they really do go out of their way to help each and every student. Overall, the inclusive and tight-knit community couldn’t get any better.

I use to attend BMA. I am know in College. The thing I hated about going to BMA was wearing uniforms and the high turn around in teachers. I also did not like the way the staff talked to students we are all humans. I also didn’t like the fact there was no programs and activities like other schools have. No lockers , no sports, no big brother programs. I did like the aspect of college readiness however I had asked a teacher for a letter of recommendation and never received. Anyways, when thinking of you school look for what you think is best for your child. I think a child should have the opportunity to experience everything in school. When I left charter school I went to another charter school but then wanted to experience a public school. It was one of the best decisions my dad could have made. You decide

I’ve been apart of the BMA community for 10 plus years!!! One student being a BMA alumni in 11th grade and one currently in 4th grade. The teaching staff is great!!!! they take the time to make learning enjoyable for their students and pay attention when extra support in social emotional areas may be needed. BMA gives plenty of opportunities for parents to stay involved from the recurring parent teacher conferences and town halls to other various events that are put on throughout the school year. One of my favorite things about this school is how hands on the principal Mr. Stack is as leadership is what sets the tone!!!!!! At most schools the principal is usually just a name that many don’t get a chance to know but mr. Stack makes it his duty to stay involved and get to know his students and their families to ensure the school is doing the best it can.

Honestly, BMA was my not my first choice of schools for my daughter when she started Kindergarten. Now, almost 9 years later, I am so glad I picked this school. My daughter has received a well-rounded education, but and most importantly the school has focused on her emotional well-being, personal development, and building a community.

My daughter absolutely loves the teachers and the staff. The principal has been there since she started and is very engaged with the students. The staff have ushered these students through tragedies, Covid, and the difficult transition from children to teenagers.

There has also been a steady presence of parents who devote so much time volunteering that they also have a relationship with the students.

Thanks to BMA, my daughter will be going to her 1st choice for high-school, along with 4 other BMA students and their supportive parents.

4.5 stars They have the same challenges with behavior and bullying as other schools.

When my child first started I thought it was a great school until time went on the real character of staff came out. They display favoritism with children, don’t properly address situations with students they brush them off when they don’t feel like dealing with it and the principal makes rude comments to children that they won’t understand unless you are an adult who understands sarcasm and how things you say can be disrespectful especially to a person of color. Now there are a few good teachers in the mix but in my opinion the bad out weighs the good. Also staff will not address or acknowledge you only your child most times.

My son has been with BMA since kindergarten (via zoom in the pandemic) and will be in third grade next year. I’ve grown to love the staff and how much they are a reflection of his community. The communication via the app is easy to sort through and great about planned and unforeseen events. I especially like the ability to ask questions and how timely the responses are. The principal is always engaging with kids in both positive and assertive ways and I’m consistently amazed how Mr. Stack remembers their individual names. Every teacher my son has had so far has been what he needed, i do especially love how the 2nd grade teachers this year work collectively to look after not just their classroom but all the kids. I do wish the mental health Lego group would come back or continue but overall I’m extremely happy about my sons progress with BMA!

My children are very happy there and always going to school with a positive attitude. The staff is amazing and they all know every single kid name and their parents and that make me feel that my kids are very well taken care of and if anything happens to them or if staff sees anything concerning, they will reach out to me asap.

Though they don't attend the after school care, we've heard amazing things about the opportunities that the kids are given during that program. We'd highly recommend BMA!

I have to thank the school for being extremely patient with my now 8th Grader and his autism diagnosis! They have been working with him since kindergarten and he is making amazing strides! BMA is very inclusive! We truly appreciate the community they have built and continue to build! As long as I have kids, they will be at BMA!

School doesn’t provide adequate safety for students. Multiple times they’ve let my daughter get picked up by someone that is on a DO NOT let pick up list. Their response when I asked who picked her up “ we don’t know”. Mostly everybody who works there has children attending and they all receive special treatment even when their bullies. The after school program teacher has 2 kids attending there that she has allowed to bully and gang up on my kid the whole year. This school has been nothing but trouble.

If you have a special needs child this school is not for your child. They have no experience with students who have a disability.
The staff could use more training and more support.
The school should offer more to children with disability. To me the special education support at this school sucks.

BMA is amazing! The reasons as to why are endless. Starting from how great the teachers are, the control they have over the classrooms, to the close knit environment of all students and families knowing one another. The emphasis on getting our scholars college ready starts from their first day and I love it. From K to 8th these scholars are giving the tools they need for success and gears them up for prestigious high schools or to continue on to Aspires great high school. I am more then pleased my kids attend here. My middle schooler just started 6th and is ecstatic he gets to go from period to period, gets to choose electives, town halls, it's great. One thing I would love BMA to offer is a second language once the kids reach middle school so they can master that prior to entering high school. Aside from that, this school rocks!!
