I DO NOT recommend Sage Oak Charter School based on our experience. My daughter was already behind in math and was placed in intervention. She was supposed to receive two intervention classes a week, but she only received one and that one was often canceled. The math intervention classes were overcrowded. She was rarely called on and was often hurried when trying to ask questions, which made it even more difficult for a child who was already struggling to get the support she needed.
While you do get the pick the material, the teacher assigns the work. She was assigned an extra weeks worth of math to catch up while starting in the middle of the school year. She never learned late 3rd-grade math material. I understand that children can fall behind and that catching up takes time, but I expected a school offering individualized learning to provide an appropriate pace and meaningful intervention rather than simply increasing the workload.
At one point, she was doing 70 pages of math plus testing in a single learning period. I dont understand how a child who is already behind in math is expected to actually learn and retain the material with such an accelerated workload. Completing a large amount of work does not necessarily mean a child understands what they are learning.
Her workbook also wasnt in their system, so it didnt match the assigned lessons. She had to complete extra work from the following lesson simply so the teacher could submit the correct materials.
Field trips were consistently full, which made it difficult for our daughter to participate in those opportunities as well.
Instructional funds were also extremely difficult to use. I was not receiving the necessary forms in a timely manner. When I finally received them, the teacher said she thought she had already sent them. After that, it took an additional three weeks for the funds to be approved because the teacher had not submitted the paperwork.
My daughter was given an extremely heavy workload for 3rd grade, despite already struggling academically. We chose a charter school because we wanted flexibility and individualized support, but much of the experience felt like trying to keep up with their system rather than having the system adapt to what my daughter actually needed.
From what we experienced, what Sage Oak portrays on social media does not reflect the reality of our experience with the school.
