There are a couple of pearls in this school. It’s well known that the maker space labs are top notch.

Then, there’s everything else - and from ELA to math to science to computer science, the quality of education at DATA is deplorable. Reviewing assignments shows flawed questions, misspelled words, “trick” questions. The implementation of the Aeries online portal is completely chaotic as grades published can fluctuate from F to A to F within a week.

Aside from the low quality teaching, the administration that can’t seem to keep a principal to save itself, a student body that knows not to use the vape bathrooms lest they get assaulted, you have possibly one of the worst middle schools in the county. And I think I just misspelled country.

Party nurse tech made my child feel unsafe and nagged for asking for an ice pack and she was turned away , and scolded . Called the school about this issues and they never called back

Not productive in helping students and notifying parents if child is struggling or behind. They do not help the child succeed or any tools in place to give the students the ability to be successful.

Awesome, the staff is great! All 3 of our sons loved going there and the extra curricular activities really exposed them to things and ideas that we couldn't get at Anacapa. CAD, Advanced Coding, Solar Panels, Aquaponics, Solar Race Cars, Drones, 3D Printers, exposure to different languages like Spanish, Arabic, ASL and German, this school is the best. The way the staff dictates culture at the school, as opposed to letting the kids dictate culture, was refreshing. They effectively handle bullying and take an approach that not only ensures accountability but also key ways at implementing conflict resolution, all while making sure that the child's enthusiasm toward learning isn't interrupted or diminished. My kids were in GATE classes and there was a big difference between the way students viewed and valued academics at each school. DATA students looked at it as valuable, while Anacapa students tended to look at it as being dorky. I also noticed that at Anacapa the teaching staff tended to be more highly tenured and as a result, less receptive to the changes in learning that are constantly happening. Some teachers at Anacapa refused to email, which was shocking. We love and highly recommend DATA to everyone that asks what we think based on our experiences at both schools. DATA gets an A+ in our book!

This school is amazing. The teachers care for students in a way that is incomparable to other schools that my children have been to over the years. My daughter loves school and looks forward to going every day. The staff welcome the students everyday and make the school feel like home. The computers DO MATTER and really help my daughter learn. My child is learning things that you cant learn at most schools like how to build a drone from scratch or how to use a laser engraver to create beautiful art. What other school can your child compete in Aspire, a competition in which you can create a business idea and actually pitch it to judges and the public? Or what other school can your child learn how to solder or how to write computer code? Overall, I would recommend this school over and over again because in my eyes, it is truly wonderful.

They often have homeroom conversations about it and are always watching at lunch. They do a very good job at protecting the students, but sometimes it's not enough. Will it ever be?

Completely! My daughter is in leadership and loves it! They try there best to make the school a fun, spirited place to be! They do so much; dances, renaissance parties, spirit days, 8th grade beach day, fundraisers, and much more! They are an amazing bunch with a great teacher.

C.H.A.M.P.S. is what the school follows. It is a form of rules that changes with each teacher, but follows the same guides. It really helps the students to know what to do when they are unsure. For example, if a student is unsure if they are aloud to get out of there seat or now, they can check under the a (activities).

They are absolutely amazing! They care about the students and put a lot of effort into their teaching. They make learning fun with crafty projects and engaging classwork. I wish every school had teachers like they do at DATA.

Honestly, this varies from teacher to teacher. My daughter has some teachers who give tons of homework, and some that give none. The homework isn't just busy work, it's work that actually helps in the classroom.

Throwing free computers and free food at children (by the way, someone is paying for this!) does not equal a good school. We all know that the rankings of this school are poor (4-5 out of 10) but parents who want their children to feel or appear smarter will send them here. When you surround your child with academically poor students, they look stronger. So that is the idea--send your kid to a school that has poor test scores, has several families that don't honor true education (California state school standards are just not sufficient I am sorry), has virtually no homework or after school expectations, and you too can feel like your child is a genius. Give them a free computer and wow now they are really up and coming. I will not fall for this. Skip the free computer and free food and make the priority to put your child in a competitive environment that will promote a strong future with college and graduate study. Most parents who send there kids here don't understand this concept. This is why California has one of the worst public school systems in the world.

DATA blasts the ceiling off of learning and allows kids to accomplish amazing things. My 6th and 8th grader are 3D Printing, designing in CAD, operating CNC Mills, and building their own drones. Incredible...

My son is in 7th grade and loves it. They have done an amazing job turning this school into what it is today. The office staff and teachers are wonderful.

I have two kids at DATA this year, one in 6th and one in 8th grades. They both are doing very well here. They enjoy having their own personal computers & being able to turn in homework electronically. Most of their teachers have been very good, although some are very academically tough. It's been a struggle at times to keep up, but it they have both learn a good deal and have made lots of new friends as well. Not all teachers are amazing, but some are! I would recommend this school if you have a kid who likes a challenge!

Excellent school. Son's first year there and he loves it. Has a GATE classes and their curriculum there is great. It has caring teachers, staff and administration who support the children in. Have great projects

Excellent school.! It has caring teachers, staff and administration who support the children in their projects and learning. The use of technology adds another dimension and helps to make learning even more fun. My child has thrived while at DATA with their engaging curriculum and positive attitude/environment.

I used to go to De Anza before it changed but i can gladly say that it is the best school there could be.. from sports to the teacher they help you understand that particular subject! They have lots of additional programs that help you such as AVID and WEB, they truely give you a reason why to wake up in the morning and want to go to school. Its a great school for anyone!

4/10 does not provide an accurate picture of De Anza Academy of Technology and the Arts. Even before 2010, when DATA received a federal grant to become a magnet school, the students at DATA were thriving.
