Mi hijo recientemente llegó a casa sin sentirse bien. Me dijo que culparon a todo su grado por lo que pasó el viernes y que los maestros hicieron reglas muy estrictas. This review is only referring to Global Village Academy Aurora's West Campus. My child is a normal tween growing through life doing what tweens do.
There are some adults who have targeted my child because I advocate for her when it's necessary. My child has been bullied by these adults, threatened by the dean with suspension for wearing crocs and when I would drop off my daughter at school, I would see a lot of children wearing crocs. I would ask if we could focus more on my child's academic and social emotional well being instead of closed toe shoes. My child is threatened by the dean for having a cell phone on the desk when the teacher allowed it during certain times. My child was told that there was a special "eye spy" watching her during passing time in the hallways, I believe led by the head campus monitor, who also yells at my child and has scoffed at me about it. When I advocate for my child, I also ask for resolution to make the school environment conducive for my child to learn and grow. This school has the space for potential to grow into a great school. When you have adults who target children and use school policy to justify punishing children when it's not warranted is one of the reasons the school fails. I'm not speaking about all of the adults at the school but some. My child has some trusted adults to talk with at the school and we have developed some healthy relationships with them. The school needs to have more adults in the building who genuinely care about the children and show it. Even when it comes to discipline, when children know that they are cared about, I believe they respond better. Other students asked my child and head campus monitor, why is my child being "picked on", it's that apparent. Facilitating a more healthy school environment at GVA Aurora West, that's conducive for our children's growth and development, is much needed for my child and all the children. I have spoken with parents who are afraid of advocating for their children due to the possibility of their children being targeted, I used to be that parent. My child shouldn't have to leave the school, it's their right to attend school in an environment that's safe and healthy, not hostile.

This school was great years ago then it went thru a lot of changes with several different Principals. Overall this school is run very poorly, it is set up like a prison at the east campus. All you see is tons of adults at the receptionist area looking at cameras searching for the next criminal. Very ineffective Registrar, left messages without a return call. Call to complain but the Office Manager is in another city and only comes in once a week,. The Administration team/staff is weak and should be replaced once again. The teachers work hard but get little help, classes are over packed. Very unfriendly environment at both campuses. Hopefully Aurora Public Schools will step in and revamp what is happening here.

Fundamentally, the strong kids in the 5th grade leave the school and so the school fills in the middle school with kids who are uninterested in learning and are very disruptive. This made learning impossible for my child.

Take my advice and don't make the mistake our family made. The lower grades at the east campus are great. However, pull your child after the 5th grade and send them to a more academic challenging school for middle school.

We are new at GVA but Ive been impressed with the administrations intentionally both on the academic and interpersonal/social responsibility levels. My son is learning so much in his English and mandarin class, and this has boosted his self esteem through the roof. He enjoys school, and feels comfortable and is safe. His teachers have been very proactive about keeping us informed about his progress every week in class, and how he is doing on the state level/core curriculum standard. I wish more parents would take the time to send in their positive reviews, because every parent Ive spoken to has nothing but good things to say about this school.

Administration is disorganized and unqualified to be in positions. Because of poor administration teacher turnover rate is close to 50% every year. Bad students are not dealt with effectively by administration. Just attend any assembly of students and you will see that the students are out of control, talk incessantly, and are rude while administration does nothing. I would not send my kids here ever.

My son came home with bruises from other students. Staff didn't care. They tried to suspend him for defending himself against a bully at one point! Since staff wasn't helping him he tried to deal with the bully himself (and I support him.)

The teacher to student ratio seems to make it difficult for teachers to keep control of their classes. The result is too many students being sent to the office. Eventually students realize they can "take a break" in the office for poor behavior and start acting out on purpose.

I chose this school for my Kindergarten son because the launguage benefits sounded great and it was in a good location for our family. I regret ever sending him there now and have started homeschooling.

On one occasion they attempted to suspend him for defending himself against another student picking on him! They were unaware of what was really going on and gave little effort to find the truth. A bit later, he came home with bruises from another student and the staff were apathetic! Since they rarely listened to my son, he started clamming up and didn't want to speak candidly with adults anymore - a drastic change from the "teacher's pet" he was at the start of the year!

They offered to change simple things to help him succeed but ultimately these changes went by the wayside a few days after they implemented them. They attempted to suspend him at least 5 times from Kindergarten for a range of things that are normal for kids that age do (and when other students had the same behavior they weren't reprimanded for it.) Suspension seemed like overkill in all but one instance and I invested a substantial amount of time talking to staff about these issues. They never seemed to care and would chat until they could get rid of me.

Now, with plans to live abroad, I would love to secure a scholarship for him to to attend one of the best international schools available but I have little hope of him getting it since they labeled him a problem student. I tried so hard to make it work with this school! It seems I was the only one putting in that effort though. :(

The best thing about this school is that it was so terrible it forced me to look into homeschooling. I am so pleased with his progress in the weeks since leaving!

Great school especially for the standard of APS schools. My daughter is now in First grade and I have to say that there has been major improvement in the organization of the school since last year. The staff and teachers are extremely dedicated and love what they do (in general)
As a parent, you need to be involved PERIOD. I have noticed that a lot of parents expect the school to fully educate their children including basing home training but don't always support or help the child and wonder why the child is failing academically but also on a social interaction level. If you are involved and keep a regular communication with the teachers, your kid will thrive. The Encore Program and international days are a wonderful cultural exposure as well. Still hoping the school will get back to its initial immersion teaching of foreign languages like it is the case for private accredited international schools as I believe is the most efficient way to teach foreign languages.

My son has been going to this school since kindergarten he is now in 3rd grade. Since he has been attending he has been physically assaulted by other students and bullied and belittled by teachers. Most recently he was accused of writing inappropriate words in notebooks in his class and his teacher gave him detention when he defended himself. This is an absolute horrible school filled with teachers who have no idea how to nurture children.

My daughter is in kindergarten and loves her teacher. Since her mom is from Mexico it is very important for our daughter to be able to speak Spanish. We are extremely happy with the language options the school offers. In addition, the ENCORE programs are GREAT!

This is a champagne education with a beer price. My oldest started as a 1st grader in Mandarin the first year this school was opened. The staff and teachers are everything you could hope for. Now he is in high school and has to have 2 years of language to prepare for graduation. He is grateful that he had so many years of Mandarin as learning Spanish has been easy for him. I cannot say enough good things about this school.

I am so happy that I enrolled our children here. We were hesitant at first because of what people say about standardized test scores of children in immersion schools, but are now so happy we did it anyways! Our kids are now bilingual and functioning above their grade level. Fluent adults complement their Spanish. Also, I love the community of families that we have bonded with. I commend the staff for what they do for our kiddos! Teaching is hard enough as it is so I can imagine how much harder it is to communicate when you are speaking in a foreign language. But it works. Thank you!

I had already read bad reviews about this school and should have taken the advise. I wanted to have my daughter learn a new language and thought it would be a good idea to go ahead and do it anyway, bad call! She is going to a new school next year. There is really no good things about this school and you should avoid this school at all cost. To start off the traffic is ridiculous and it is not worth sitting for half an hour to drop/pick up your child, promise will make you late for work. Next all the staff worries here is about sending emails about how to donate or have fundraisers to give to the school, any field trip the child goes to will always require you to pay at least $10.00 and you have to do 30 hours of volunteer work or if you don't, you pay 150.00 for tuition for the year. I do not mind paying for school trips or donating money but this school receives about $7,000.00 per child that attends each year, I wonder what they are doing with that money, it is definitely not to improve the staff or look of the school. My child is very smart and always on top of the class but to this date, I barely get report cards, (have gotten 2 since my daughter has been attending here) or meeting with the teachers, also I just came to find out she had tardy's when she is in school every day on time but the teachers do not take attendance correctly and they have the nerve to tell you, I am the one responsible to get her to class on time. Also when a student gets hurt, they cover it and wont let you know, I would only hear from my daughter, her pre-school would always call me even if it was a minor scratch. I really feel like the people here are playing school and cant keep things organized or worry about the real issues. Just wanted to let anyone out there know that this is not a good alternative for your child, consider other schools in your area. Hope this helps.

I wanted to thank the parent that recommended we look into the teachers and if they are certified. I did get with the Administrator and it looks like they are. They all have degrees which was also shown to me. I wanted to set the truth on that but didn't ask about the background check, APS usually handles that but will ask next time. I am very happy with the development of my kinder. She is able to count and identify words in chinese! I am a happy parent and really don't understand the low rating. Now traffic is bad but what school doesn't have issues. I have a middle schooler at South middle school and their traffic is awful too.

As a parent of a 5th grader who started in Kinder I am very pleased with the growth and knowledge my son has received in his last 5 years. Parents love to vent their anger in any forum possible but go into the school and see for yourself. The Principal is involved, teacher as certified (by law) and background checks are done on everyone in the buildings. Sure test scores aren't great but you have student learning 2 languages at the same time where traditional schools only teach 1 and have low to moderate test scores. Think twice before judging this school based off of parents who just want to vent. Happy 5th grade parent!

I wrote a review on this site last year and at at that time I gave the school two stars. This year I give it one, and I have moved all my children to other schools. The review mentioning a gifted and talented program is a blatant falsehood. My children have scored in the gifted range on the school MAPS assessments for years and were never placed in any such program. When I asked about it, I was told that it was "in development". We have been at GVA for over 6 years, so my opinions are well informed. Here are the issues you should be aware of prior to enrolling your child at this school: - Disorganization is chronic and pervasive. Although West campus is newer, the problem seems to be worse there. - Teacher turnover is also chronic and pervasive, to some extent by design. Immersion teachers are often here on 3 year visas, so even if they hire a good one that teacher will leave. - Teachers are not highly qualified for their jobs. Ask about their qualifications. Training matters. - The middle school technology curriculum was a complete trainwreck upon rollout this year. How would the students use it competently when their teachers cannot?

The person who just wrote the last review is either an administrator or a halfwit. This school is sub par at best and everyone knows it. Gifted and Talented? Since when, and why is this not made available for all parents to know about? We have left and there are other families who have left this school for greener pastures, and better educated and professional staff and administrators. When my husband and I went to another Aurora school to register my son, they stated, and I quote, "Oh, yes, this is around the time we start receiving children from THAT school. We don't know how they keep their doors open!!" (END QUOTE) Don't send your children there. We are so much happier now that we have left......

The last post on 10/2/2014 is so TRUE. If I can give this school a lower star I would. Horrible school. This school testing scores are soooo low, that if your child were to attend another school, your child will fail. If your child is smart, the teacher will hold your child back so that the other children can catch up. They teach the children to tell if they see bullying but punish the teller or re-victimizing the victim all over again. Teachers tell the kids to disobey their parent and when called on the bad advise, the teacher wants to cry intimidation. The administration says "you don't want to be known as the parent who goes off on a teacher...then the student will suffer from your actions". This statement was from their student Coordinator Ms. Houghtaling. If you ask to see the "teacher" credentials, they will not be told to you. Half of the teachers just have a certificate that's not up to the standards to the US let alone the National teachers standards. Kids everywhere at all times Not even in class. Teachers can't control their classrooms. Traffic is out of control. The school is supposed to be "culturally diverse" but it's not. HORRIBLE school.

Contrary to the previous post about how "great" GVA is, there is more to education than parental involvement. While it is key, parents who work hard to be there for their children also deserve the same attentiveness and care from staff who work for and with their children. GVA Aurora is simply not a school that supports ALL of the families and their students that attend this school! The focus is NOT negativity, but rather truth. GVA Aurora is not a great school and ALL the concerns presented are facts; the truth! Both of my kids attend GVA, and love it. I make sure to work very closely with their teachers and staff to ensure the best education possible. The reviews left by other parents are quite negative, and I understand their concerns, however if you do have a well behaved child who is open to learning and you are there to guide them, they will do just fine. If you are a lazy parent who does not stay involved with your child's academics, do not send them here.

IGNORANCE IS NOT BLISS. If you are a parent with a child at GVA read the reviews, visit unannounced and volunteer. You will pull your child out! What actually happens during the day is not what you think. Ask for proof of teachers credentials and is they were validated as well as the principal. You will be shocked. Not only are there academic concerns there are security concerns. They didn't see me or question me when I walked onto the playground and picked up my son at lunch!

This school was the worst thing that ever happened to our son who is now in 7th grade. He went to GVA for 1st grade and had huge struggles. We didn't know that he had an actual disability at the time, but I can tell you for sure that this school was absolutely not equipped to manage a child with any special learning issues of any kind. They do not have the staff. But worse than that, it was clear that they just wanted our son to go away. They had no solutions and did not care in the slightest. Teneshia Taylor was the only person who was concerned about the kids but she had zero support from the principle or anyone else. It was a terrible joke and a mess. Its was so disappointing because the concept was absolutely wonderful. But when you have incompetent people in charge, it doesn't matter how great the concept is. I wasn't ever going to write this review but when I happened upon this site and the reviews I saw here, I see that nothing has changed. DO NOT ever send your child here if you feel that they will need any additional help or cooperation beyond the regular classroom. They will not get it here.

This school is not good. The principle has no respect to parents. The classroom is over crowded, no enough table, each table jammed up with over 6 kids. No playground, they let kids running on the parking lot. Many teachers have no certificates. Traffic is always more than a nightmare, gosh, no way to get in to the school, then once get in, then no way to get out, entrance is also exit. When my kid was there, I was unhappy and stressed everyday.

I have mixed emotions about this school. It started out with a great vision but somewhere along the way that vision was lost. Over-crowded classes, east campus is a pig style, teachers look overwhelmed and the place is chaotic. I think if they had taken time to perfect their model instead of the rapid expansion and "lets get as many kids as we can cram into classes" model, it would have been a great school. We finally decided to pull our kids out after this school year.

Love this school! Like every school, especially charters, there are things that could be better but there is no place else in Aurora that students can learn French and Mandarin. My child has been here for several years and is able to communicate and learn in a language we don't speak at home. I love the diversity of her friends and classmates and Singapore math is great. Teachers care about their students like most teachers but she has been introduced to cultures from around the world. Getting my student to be both bilingual and literate in multiple languages are worth the things that are not perfect.

My daughter has been going to GVA since kindergarten French, on fall she will go to 3rd grade. She's been doing great with French. I'm very pleased with the reading and math program. The staff has always been super friendly and helpful. I'm looking forward to enroll my son in kindergarden Spanish immersion on fall. I recommend this school to everybody. About the principal Barbara Ridenour I think she is doing her job right. I asked her support in a personal situation my family is going through by writing a letter which she was able to do and she denied the help. That was hurtful because I have been supporting the school for a long time; but that doesn't make the school bad or whatsoever. That is the only complaint I have about GVA.

I was a previous student at this school and this school was the worst school i ever went to i was just in third grade and they were teaching me eighth grade math and to do math backwards and when ever my teachers handed me homework it was way above my learning level and i almost lost it i was running up and down the halls because the work was too much for me to understand i was only 9 when this was happening this also effected many other students in this dreaded school DON'T Ever Send Your Kids To This School! EVER! it will almost drive them to a mental breakdown like it almost did to me as a former student of this school i tell you to never send your kids to this school and if i could i would rate this school a 0 out of 10.

It is painful for me to think about this school. The administration lacks leadership and it feels like nothing can be done without the approval of the Executive Principal. This is frustrating and disheartening because I expect the Principal at the school to have some authority to make decisions. The staff is grumpy and unhappy. There is so much division between the teachers that you can hear the gossip when you walk in the door. The school is filthy. The Gym is disgusting, the bathrooms are dirty, dust and grime are thick, and there is random 2nd hand furniture everywhere. Whoever is in charge of cleaning and maintenance is making money without fully doing their job. This school just does not make sense! We are withdrawing our children and are not looking back.

My daughter is in the 1st grade mandarin program and loves it, she is speaking her immersion language in the advanced category already.I went to 8 schools before she started kindergarten but was afraid she would get bored because she knew kindergarten curriculum at age 3. I am really glad I found this school because now she can learn it all in a new language. That being said this school may not be a good fit if a child is behind in English already and you can not work with them at home since the first year is 100% immersion and is I think 80% for 1st and 2nd. Overall I have had a great experience with the staff and school as a whole, they allow you to be as involved as you want and the one time my daughter did have an issue it got handled the very same day. I can't complain.

My daughter is in Sr Aguayo's Spanish kindergarten class! That man is a god send! Yes my kinder comes home with A TON of homework but just how much she has grown throughout this has truly been amazing! Test scores are low with the school but to be fair they all spend there day learning there immersion language yet Colorado makes us test in English. Sinta who works the desk also very relatable as well as Maria my daughter is always excited to walk in to school and see them both. Yes it's a big school but my child is not just a number to them everybody has truly taken the time to get to know her and what works best for her to learn. I love that GVA is our school and I'm truly excited to see how my child grows in her immersion language because of GVA!

Terrible school! Extremely high turnover in administration, teachers and students. Test scores are low, academics is low too. The board does not manage the school instead they allow one person to dictate (The Executive Principal). The parking situation is a nightmare! There is no playground even though parents have raised money in the past for one. Executive Principal is not there for the best interest of children, they are only numbers for her. The immersion language concept is good, however there is no fidelity. Steer Clear for your own sanity!

Although the school offers immersion classes that are said to increase the capibility of getting a job the princible is less insistant on improving the schools that are already establitised instead she preferes to build new ones she hasn't gotten rid of the infestation instead increases the wild fire that is global village academy the vice princible desposes of teachers as if they were just an object of money so what ever you do DO NOT PUT YOUR CHIDEREN IN GLOBAL VILLAGE ACADEMY (you'd ruin their lives and make them antisocial)

This is our child s fifth year at GVA and at first, I thought it was a great idea for my two children to learn Chinese but did not think long term. For example, how will my children continue to learn Chinese after middle school? A lot of high schools do not teach this language. The math at GVA is a higher quality but they teach it in the foreign language, so if your child falls behind in their foreign language then they are sure to fall behind in math. I agree with another reviewer, who said that children can get left behind at this school. My son is two years behind in Chinese and we were just told. He is also behind in math because he can't understand his Chinese teacher and behind in English due to learning Chinese first. We have put him in tutoring for Chinese and math but his teacher brings it up in class and humiliates him. It seems many of the Chinese teachers use humiliation as a discipline or correction tool. Maybe it is part of their culture? GVA is not for every child. On the flip side GVA has some great teachers and academic programs. The after school programs are fun too. I just wish they could execute their vision for the school better.

The teachers are some of the best I have ever seen; supportive, hard-working, and they care about each and every one of the students in their class. The staff is attentive and kind. There are some minor issues that need to be worked out by the principal and the charter collaborative, but progress takes time and experience, and GVA is a young school. This school gave my kindergartner and 2nd grader an immense knowledge of the French language already, which will only help both of them in their future school endeavors.

GVA is great.... ONLY if you want your child to learn a language. Do NOT go here if you want any type of academic learning. Teacher turnover is super high... and has to be because they are here on 3 year Visas and have to go back after. That means that the new teachers have to start all over and the school will NEVER have a solid educational foundation. Also, the Global Village Collaborative MUST go away. They are pulling money from the other campuses (just look closely at the financials... money spent at gas stations called "supplies" and many more). Any organization that is taking resources from my kid's education is NOT ok with me. The Principals are employed by the Collaborative and "leased" by the campuses, therefore they will never have control to make any decisions about the campus without first going through the collaborative...Very inefficient. Socioeconomically speaking... Test scores don't lie. Great idea... Very poorly executed!

This is one of three school rating sites I looked at before placing my child at GVA Northglenn. I wanted to come back here and report my findings because I had a major misconception about the importance of a schools' CCAP scores. Now that I've met the students, I see that some students' families come from all over the world. I am surprised by how often a student speaks a third language at home, the target language at school, and English only during English Literacy at GVA and during State Standardized testing. So comparing CCAP scores for average American students with students who hear one language at home, a different language at school, and standardized tests in English...is not an accurate way to assess the intelligence of the student body or the curriculum. When you have several students per class with such interesting challenges to the reporting process, you just cannot use the raw numbers. Also, I misunderstood the after school specials. At first I thought they were overpriced, but now I see that professionals from the community are coming in to teach these intense, specialized classes. This has become our favorite aspect of the school; life-changing teachers!

This is my 4th, 3rd, and 1st grader's first year at GVA. I am so happy with the school so far. I love the parent involvement and the requirement for parents to put in at least 30 volunteer hours. I am happy with all my kid's teachers. I think this school is just the challenge my kids needed. We do not speak Spanish at home and it is exciting to see the progress they are making at school. Their English reading and writing, along with math, have improved also. I know many parents are upset with the principal for various reasons, but I am truly happy with this school overall.

kids can get lost easily at this school, a lot of safety issues. Went to pick up both my kids and nowhere to be found. Thank god we found them after lokking for about 20 minutes. It was a very sad day, but i transfered them to another school and we are all a lot happier with it. When I asked the GVA staff for a withrrow form,they said they were out because they had a lot withrrows going on. That tells me that I made the right desicion by switching them.

Not for active kids. My daughter has attended for 2 days and she does not like it. Not your average kindergarten-not-wanting-to-be-away-from-mama not liking it. She's been to preschool without a problem for years. First day report - "my teacher is mean." She didn't get a sticker. She knew it was for "being bad" but she had no idea what she did. I asked the teacher and she said that she was "moving all the time." Oh. She's 5. She came from an active preschool where the kids didn't sit at tables all day except to eat. This was being bad to them (nevermind that you should give every kindergartner a sticker ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!). I talked to her and told her that she wasn't in trouble from me (I know she doesn't like to sit still. That's just her.), but that her teacher wants her to be more still and look at her more. Her soundless splashy tears was her joyous, free spirit leaving her little body. Can they teach languages? Sure. However, I think they forget the are teaching CHILDREN. My daughter dreads going back there. I'm taking her out of this shool before it kills her love of school and learning, not to mention her spirit. Not for everyone. Listen to your child.

Wish I heard about this site earlier, probally would have never attended our neighborhood school, Tollgate. Program is one of kind, teachers are diverse and staff is friendly. Haven't meet the Principal (except for the information night) but probally not a bad thing. My child speaks a second language already so we are going for a 3rd. The French program seems good, will know more at the end of the year but for the first 2 weeks, prtetty good. Like the parent before wish there was bussing.

This is very unsafe school,my son was lost and nobody knew about it until i went to pick him up. I was looking for him all by myself and the staff there did not care at all for him or for. Had to call the police for help. After my son was found, i did not even get an apology . He is now in a safe school better than this one.

My student has been attending GVA for 3 years and I keep thinking that it will get better organized but so far NOT. The lack of communication from the Admin really needs work. The teachers are GREAT! But I find that the left hand doesn t know what the right hand is doing. As for the language my child is able to speak, read, and write very well in Chinese. The teachers are willing to go the extra mile to help the students out. So for that I want to give an above average grade but in order to make it great we need to be organized.
