Very Disappointed With the Teacher and School Leadership

I am extremely disappointed with the way my child has been treated at this school. The teacher has repeatedly shown a lack of care, patience, and respect toward the students. Children deserve a safe and supportive environment, but instead they are met with negativity and dismissive behavior.

What makes the situation even more frustrating is that the principal does not listen to parents concerns. Instead of addressing issues or taking them seriously, parents feel brushed off and ignored. Communication is poor, accountability is missing, and the wellbeing of the students does not seem to be a priority.

No parent should feel unheard when it comes to their childs safety and emotional wellbeing. I hope the school reflects on these concerns and makes real changes, because the current environment is unacceptable.

The first thing I really noticed about Vanguard Classical West is its diversity. I mean all around diversity, from the students, to the staff, and even the curriculum. My son has had the privilege of befriending children of multicultural backgrounds, races, ethnicities and religions. Very reflective of the world we live in. This diversity also extends to the teachers and staff at Vanguard Classical who are also of many different backgrounds, which reinforces the truth that figures of authority come in many forms. Bringing together such a unique group of scholars and educators with a shared goal of making a positive impact in the communities and ultimately changing the world, requires a multifaceted curriculum. Vanguard's course study not only teaches our children how to count, read, and write, but also emotional awareness, conflict resolution, and the beauty of cultural difference. As a member of a multicultural family it is important that my children attend a school that is as diverse as the world we live in.

Two years ago I began work here as one of two English Language Development (ELD) teachers. The time I have spent here has been incredibly rewarding. The people I work with are great and the level of teamwork and collaboration with my colleagues is amazing. I really enjoy the students and families that attend Vanguard as well. Vanguard is a great place to work at supporting our second language learners.

As a teacher at Vanguard Classical School, I enjoy coming to work every single day. The students are kind, hardworking, and help make the school community a positive place to learn. Students are able to grow academically following the curriculum taught at the school, but also grow their character development by learning and focusing on a new core virtue each month. The other staff members I work with are welcoming and friendly. They care about each and every student in their class. Vanguard Classical School equips students with the tools they need to be successful in many facets of their lives.

This is probably the most diverse school setting we have experienced. Everyone here feels welcomed. You feel a good vibe as soon as you enter the building. The teachers and staff are so kind, and will absolutely go out of their way to help you out. The teachers are outstanding and create an environment where students are happy to learn! I love the character education that is taught, and the classical education model which teaches to the whole child. I highly recommend this school to anyone who is looking!

We have been a VCS West family since 2011. 3 out of our 4 children attend Vanguard, with our fourth enrolled for kindergarten in the fall.
We have had nothing but great experiences over the years. The teaching staff has been phenomenal. The admin staff is very welcoming, informative and helpful. As a family, we feel communication is key; the teaching & admin staff have always been very efficient & thorough with their communication. We feel that the school is working with us to help our children succeed.
One of the many things we appreciate about Vanguard is their focus on character building. As a school, they understand that character is key to being a successful person in the world and in their personal lives. The students learn about a new core virtue every month and learn ways to develop that virtue within themselves. In an ever changing world, character is key to creating a better future for everyone.
One of our kids is also a SPED student and has been since the third grade. Vanguard has been wonderful with his IEP; helping him progress, learn, development self advocating skills, and meeting goals.
I just can't say enough about Vanguard. We recommend our school to everyone.
Vanguard wants each student to have every opportunity to be the best that they can be. Vanguard provides an environment where overcoming challenges is celebrated - and each student is celebrated.
We love Vanguard and we're grateful to have such an amazing school for our kids to attend.

My kids have love Vanguard West and since I toured we felt welcome. Everyone is so friendly and the communication is great. The SPED team is amazing too and has been so helpful with my autistic son. Also great support for my son with ADHD. It felt right and we are glad we made the switch to this school.

Our girls do complain about homework, but what kid doesn't? The amount of time they spend on homework on a nightly basis is not absurd by any means. It seams about average.

It's all in the HAWK slogan. If you aren't seeing the character building in your children at VCS West then perhaps the problem lies at home. I volunteer in the classroom a minimum of two times a week and I see how much the children are growing into wonderful people.

VCS West is one of the best schools you could send your child to. Yes, we hear from other parents every now and then that they are displeased with this or that, but all-in-all, the outcome is the same. It's a great school! I see some other reviews on here from years past that are very negative. I'm here to tell you that all of the bad actors have been weeded out. As a parent volunteer I and my team were incredibly active in steering the school in the right direction. With the help of a new board being elected and the dismissal of a few ineffective staff, it was only months before a NOTICEABLE improvement was seen. These were no tiny improvements, they were leaps and bounds! VCS West is a fantastic school. Don't let anyone tell you different.

The head of school gave me PTSD. I now go to a different school, along with many ex-Vanguard students, and rather than call them that, it'd be more fitting to call them Vanguard Refugees. This school focuses more on following all the rules rather than academic success. They also seem to vaguely "care" about mental health on the surface, but when I had a stuffed animal to help my social anxiety, the only people who cared were administration. All the teachers were supportive of the idea, but admins wouldn't give a reason as to why I couldn't have it until I brought my mother in. Not a good school.

We have two daughters at vanguard and one has attended both campuses. I appreciate that the expectations are clear from the first day for the students and parents. Our oldest daughter has been attending since 2013. I have seen both of them excel once they understood and followed the expectations. Most complaints I have heard from other parents have to do more with how rigorous programs of study in math, reading, and science are than bad teachers, Etc. There are no sports offered at the East campus YET. I believe that the school is growing carefully in this Ares as not to over budget. I agree with the model of these schools. I also think they are doing well to prepare my kids for higher education.

Our daughter attends VG East and we are very unhappy with her school experience there. She now has anxiety about everything related to school, about not having her books or her homework or not being on time every day. She seems really stressed out about any little infraction. And the stories she brings home are very disturbing. They give kids a disciplinary action for needing to use the restroom at any time other than restroom breaks.

Our daughter was injured while playing a game of tag on asphalt, she has recess every other day in the school parking lot because there is only one playground and not enough room for everybody to use it, so they rotate days. One day she was pushed down, face first into the asphalt parking lot by another child, she had large abrasions on her forehead and knee that had chunks of asphalt embedded in them. She told us that she screamed really loud until a teacher came out (apparently they are unsupervised on the playground?) and in the meantime another child came up to ask if she was ok, even though it's against the "rules" to ask another child if they are ok! The school nurse sprayed some soapy water into her abrasions and when she cried in pain, she acted coldly, just put a bandaid over her asphalt-embedded wounds and made her take the stairs back down to class because she "didn't have time" to escort her down in the elevator. When she got home 6 hours later we removed the band-aid and had to scrub out the road base from her wounds and we hadn't been notified at all of her injury.
We feel this school is teaching the opposite of empathy and good character, it seems very military-like and not caring, it is giving our daughter anxiety over everything, she hasn't been the same since she started school here two years ago.

Parents have been asked to raise money for a playground for 2 years and never seen any results. The complaint process is non-existent. And the director was suddenly removed mid-school year. My son has learned to "shut up and take it" from his teacher or else they fail him. This is not what Mr. Miller promised any of us.

Please Please Please DO NOT ENROLL YOUR CHILD AT THIS SCHOOL!! We just received a memo stating that Mr. Miller left effective 11/18/15. My son started here in the 2nd grade and is now in the 5th. None of his original teachers here. They have all left. My son is currently in a class with a teacher who is not certified in Singapore math. This teacher complains that ALL of the students are doing poorly in math but fails to recognize it is his teacher and not the students that have a problem. This same teacher sent me a very unprofessional email when I questioned him about a failing grade. RUN AWAY!! This school preys on non-English speaking parents that have no idea what is happening. If you have a spine and stand up for your child by asking questions you will notice the school will label your child as a problem and their grades will suddenly drop.

This was our first year at Vangaurd East in Aurora and it will be out last. I just only wish I would have seen the signs earlier and not kept my child there the whole year. I would not recommend this school To any parent that wants their kids to learn what is the future... Technology.. was told the Millers don't like it and don't encourage it.

My daughter had so much anxiety over going to this school everyday that she made herself sick. At first I just thought it was just drama of being a 13 year old. But now that the year is over she is telling me all kinds of stories about what some of the teachers had said and done to her. As a previous reviewer has said the teachers yell at the kids all the time! If you are a teacher you should have the patience and kindness for kids and encourage learning instead of putting them down all the time. If you don't have these qualities you shouldn't be teaching kids. My daughter has struggled with school all her life and the last thing she needs is a teacher, a person who should lift up and encourage, call her stupid in front of the whole class when she couldn't answer a question. There is no excuse for that! My daughter was also told by Ms. Miller on several occasions that she couldn't be friends with someone simply because her friend was in the 9th grade and my daughter was in the 7th. And if they were seen together they would get a referral and then get suspended. If you are going to have a school that has kids from K to 12 then you should expect and encourage kids to be friends with people of all ages not just those in their grade. Just like it is in the world outside of school. I also personally witnessed a teacher in a yelling match with a parent in the pickup line for being in the wrong line and this was done in front of all the kids and other parents. If they do that in front of everyone what are they doing behind closed doors?

My daughter was so afraid to do anything in this school because even looking at the teacher wrong would get you a detention. Do not walk away from this school... RUN!!!

With the school year coming to a close I could not be happier that I switched from Aurora Academy to VG. The difference in my children's confidence from last year to this year is unbelievable! They all enjoy going to school, come home talking about what they learned and actually don't even try to "play sick"! The co- teaching method is brilliant and seems to work to both the teachers and kids advantage. I will admit the school is still a little rough around the edges but is buffing out quite nicely and I am sure will be even better next year! The facility is state of the art. I also love that there are no half days and minimal days off during the school year besides breaks! ( makes it easier on us working parents) I would definaty check this school out and sit in on some classes. It is not for everyone but has worked out fantastic for my children and family!

This school is the epitome of the education system. They are rigid and strict and allow almost no freedoms to the students. The day is spent in a lecture type environment with no hands on learning or visual aids. Students are punished for talking & have minutes taken off of their recess.. They are given no free time to unwind and conversate with fellow students even academic related conversation. This cause the student to be isolated and have a hard time connecting with others and making friendships. There is no room for error, homework is counted off 50% is turned in late even if the assignment is 100% correct they still receive and F. That is not teaching, that is controling. Student are taught that their opinion and voice does not matter because they are not allowed to share. If you walk the halls you will hear the teachers demanding the student be "on silent". Students are ocked out of the classroom for the period if they are late to class. The people who run this school have no education degrees. The school is not warm & welcoming but is run more like a corporate business. I feel that Vanguard teaches children to fear and loath school. I would NOT recomend this school

First, this CHARTER school that parents CHOOSE is very transparent about the rules, the homework and the curriculum. See what I did there with choose - you don't have to go to this school. Second, the administrators are spread thin between two campuses. They're doing their best but you can tell they could use some help. Third, the teachers are young. You get them while they're excited and full of energy but you also get high turnover. We've been very pleased with our daughter's teachers and their replacements. Fourth, the best part about this school, there aren't many entitled brats with they're self-centered helicopter parents. Fifth, this isn't a touchy feely school. It's structured and everyone is held accountable. Lastly, this a great school for Mustachians!

We attend Vanguard East. Walking into a new school can be very difficult. There is NO school that is perfect. There is NO school that will fulfill every single need for you or your child. That's not reality. Mr. And Mrs. Miller are running a brand new campus with little to no support from APS, a plethora of new staff and a majority of the students are transfers from other schools. How easy is that to handle? Let's try to remember that there aren't a lot of people out there who actually care about other people's kids like the Millers do. Their methods may not be perfect or the exact way you do things in your family, but then is that why we send our kids to school in the first place or is it to learn? I think that there has been some misunderstood tactics and if questions were just asked and if conclusions were not leapt to, it may make things easier in the end. Personally, this school is the right fit for our family and we will do our best to promote it to others by telling the truth!

We moved our kids to Vanguard (east campus) for it's inaugural year. Early on, we started hearing little things from our children and some staff (whom we know). At first we didn't pay much attention to the complaints. Then, we noticed at a few different events that the staff was unusually cold, ignoring the parents. Then we started hearing about kids being locked in (and out of) classrooms, and odd things like the administrator going around and closing window blinds and removing the control rods because "looking outside was a distraction". We then hear that the kids are not ever allowed to socialize, to the point where our kids have no real friends there. Apparently, the school has it's own weather policy (separate from Aurora Public Schools), which has not been communicated. During the latest snow storm, it decided to open on time, despite all of APS being on delay. Half the kids got late slips. There are more things, but not enough room to tell here...Unfortunately, creating "shock value" and an atmosphere of fear in the students and teachers seems to be the main focus here. My children will NOT be attending next year. Please consult other parents before choosing this school!

Horrible school! High turnover rate of staff, and for many reasons. it is run like a corporate business, not a school. The administration do not have the best interests of the students at heart. The Administration are narrow minded, hypocritical, disorganized and disrespectful. A very negative and immature atmosphere. 60% or more new staff every year. Highly disorganized and faux military style tactics!!! Do not send your child there! Their tactics are based in fear and narrow minded cliches!

I moved my son from Aurora Academy to Vanguard Classical School - East Campus. We love the facility and the value placed on Education is exceptional. The school was very transparent about the homework policy and their adherence to the Core Knowledge framework. The school also has alot of enrichment programs that one can sign up kids for. They are very diverse and really focused on the sucess of the children. My son and I have learned to work together on a structure that works for our household as the school requires that you encourage your kid to read daily, get involved in extra-curriculum activities daily and we are also required to keep a log. The school also has the incentive program where students are rewarded daily by a color- silver, green, blue or Red scheme based on how well the student behaved that day and the parents get a feedback on your kids behaviour. It has been a wonderful experience so far. We really love it here. And i am excited about the K-12 plan and the soccer field and gym in the proposed future plan of the school.

If you like military school and want your children to have no childhood than this is the school for you, this place is just miserable, my kids attend the new east campus. You walk in to the unfriendly staff and don't hear a singe sound no children, NOTHING! The lack of friendliness in the place is incredible,and the rules are just ridiculous. I think they forget these are children and not robots. My children will not be returning to this school next year as I am horrified by the rules and miserable grouchy always yelling at kids teachers. You are not allowed to go to the rest room EVER, not allowed to talk to anybody EVER the kids have no chance to make friends. I am just so disappointed by this school, I was hoping for great things not sad unhappy children. If you are considering this school go there and talk to other parents first.

My child attended this school briefly until we discovered the way this school is run. The administration is very unfriendly and seem to be promoting a very conservative, religious agenda. For example, items at the book fair must first be checked by them personally to make sure nothing is sold they deem inappropriate - these are removed. (One author they took exception to is Judy Bloom - too racy). They also choose not to teach content that is supposed to be a part of the core knowledge sequence but that they find too "controversial", for example evolution, a tenant of science. Additionally, my child was not happy here since even young children need to sit and be quiet most of the time. I saw plenty of evidence of lecturing from the teachers about proper behavior and very little actual learning going on.

It concerns me that the only ratings on this school are positive. They do not represent the many concerns that parents have with Vanguard in a variety of areas: 1. The continuous turn over in staff, resulting lack of consistency from year to year, and regular hiring of new, inexperienced teachers is a massive concern. Last year there was a 43% turnover in teaching staff. 2. Administration is inexperienced, difficult to deal with and definitely not family friendly. Sadly, most parents put up with these issues because of the value placed on the core and classical curriculum. 3. The inclusive nature of the school is visible, but a more accurate representation of the school's success in this area is best accounted for by the number of students with disabilities who have LEFT the school versus staying. In fact, very few students stay through 8th grade. Perhaps the reason that the listed reviews are not representative may also be due to a majority of parents at Vanguard not being privy to electronic school reviews due to their inability to speak English or being of lower economic status. Sadly there is a lack of positive educational alternatives in the area.

I have written another review on Vanguard but I also want to note that I love the diversity in this school. I was a little worried at first because the core program is very conservative and my son is being raised in a two-mommy household. After a number of school events I have come to learn that he has two other kids in his class that also have two-moms. We have NEVER had any issue with his teachers or faculty. The part of the city this school is located in opens it up to so many different cultures, ethnicities and class structures and I truly feel that Vanguard respects them all. One of my sons best friends is Ethiopian and my son comes home with lunch stories every day about the foods his friend brings in. Last year he had a crush on a little blond haired blue-eyed girl and this year he fancies a young lady from Chad who wears a balaclava every day to school. It's like an international school with an excellent curriculum sans the hefty price tag. Not for everyone, but some great real WORLD experiences backed up with a well-rounded education and a great staff.

This is our second year at Vanguard Classical School and we are very pleased with the results for our 4 children. Grades K,1,3,&4. We have been extremely happy with the teachers and the ability to tailor learning styles has been wonderful. It is especially helpful because they have 2 teachers per classroom of 30 students. English and Math is at the same time for all classes throughout the school each day so students can be organized based on their competency and can be moved up and down to address their level appropriately. Discipline standards are excellent, as we came from a school with none. I would attribute low parent involvement to that to the fact that students are coming in from all over town which can make it hard to participate in such activities; in fact, we drive 30 minutes, one-way, to attend this school (which is totally worth it!). This school teaches the fundamentals and foundations of education in a way that makes our students successful. I expect their test scores to continue to improve and their rating to continue to go up, especially with Mr. Miller at the helm. We are truly grateful for his willingness to support and improve education in our community.

This school is not for everyone, it is a little conservative (we are not) and not focused on computers. What drew us to the school was their focus on building character. I loved all of the quotes we saw on the classroom walls as we toured the school. The things that Vanguard does - it does right. I like that there are 2 teachers (and a para) per class. I love the art, music and P.E. programs. My son has a very liberal upbringing and I love that Vanguard balances that out and gives him a taste of what the real world will be like. A first grader in his second year at Vanguard my son is thriving. He is a literate and avid reader. This school is a little gem in this part of the metro area, I feel lucky to have found it. I can ignore the slight religious tonalities of their christmas program when I juxtapose it with the actual teachers, the students and the other parents, its a decent balance. Im a HANDS-ON parent so Im okay with my son being exposed to a multitude of ideas that we discuss together. Not for everyone, but if you want the feel of a private school without the price tag, check out Vanguard. My son and my nephew both attend Vanguard and they are both thriving.

With my Experience at Vanguard I found that the education given was a very strong education, adding on every year to Lessons and increasing the intensity level as needed. They love to build on people strength but while doing that they also try to Decrease the amount of Weaknesses in learning style forming a very strong thinking process. On a different note the teaching staff is based a young age giving students the time to really get to know the teachers there. I would recommend the school to anyone that wants to get a good education while still having fun

Vanguard Classical School is a wonderful alternative for parents looking for diversity and rigorous education. Each classroom has two full-time teachers and a para-pro. The curriculum is fabulous and the offerings of "specials" made for an easy decision. We have a very bright little girl and she was not being challenged at Bill Roberts (which has a very high rating). We didn't want her in a gifted program, and found that VCS had everything we wanted including a lot more teacher interaction. A great option for those frustrated with the DPS schools.

We are in a DPS district and moved to Vanguard for many reasons. K thru 8, challenging academic programs like Singapore Math and Riggs, Latin to understand the foundation of language, great hard working teachers, (2 full time plus Para for each class) so Student to Teacher ratio is much better than DPS. My kids have done very well there and like the smaller school. I would highly recommend this school to anyone who wants an option to the larger crowded DPS options.

At first I was going to ignore the last post, but with students attending the school, I couldn't. Whoever this individual is, she obviously has the wrong school. Vanguard Classical School in Denver, CO is a K-8 elementary school so SAT and ACT scores aren't yet relevent. Also, I know there has never been a teacher that taught three days and left AND there are no plans for a high school. She must be referring to the Vanguard School in Colorado Springs, but whoever this person is, given their lack of research capability, it would appear whichever school they left after three days is the better for it. As for Vanguard Classical School in Denver, CO, it is an excellent, upcoming school with a Core Knowledge curriculum. Go online and look at their two-year CSAP Achievement and Growth Scores or better yet, visit for a day and see the quality education that is being offered. I wish Vanguard Classical School had plans for a high school. If they did, my kids would be there until they went to college. I had to speak against the misguided critique that the person before me left. It's not fair to the school, students or staff and this person needs to be more careful.

I taught at this school for three days and left almost immediately. A few key faculty members oozed bitterness and anger. The school has a cadre of "old-timers." Around these old-timers orbit a host of neophyte teachers, most of whom just graduated college. These kids do not stick around more than 2-3 years before they move on for more pay and less silliness. Yes, it has excellent academics- if your only metric is standardized test.The school focuses on CSAP and ACT scores, both of which test recently acquired knowledge. Curiously enough, unlike many other top college preparatory schools in the state, the Vanguard School does not tout the average SAT scores of its recent graduating class.The SAT is a superior measure of critical thinking. While the school purports to model the curriculum after a classical academy by sprinkling phrases such as "humane letters" and "classical virtue" throughout, they also inject the New Testament under the aegis that the bible is taught as an historic document. Yet, there is a thinly veiled emphasis on Christian truth versus other faiths, beliefs, and mythologies. This school's reputation will slip as they attempt to grow the new high school.

We entered Vanguard this past year as my son was struggling at Cherry Creek Public Schools. We were greeted by a very caring staff and the curriculum they offer allowed my son to have his IEP removed. He is reading above grade level and is excited and happy every day to go to school. I highly recommend Vanguard, it's like having a private school for a public school price.

I really admire the curriculum and the expectations of good behavior. That alone is almost worth it to me. I like to send my kid to a school knowing that most people will be nice to them. That is a problem in this area sometimes. The kids have ethics emphasized and when I volunteered at lunch time I was really impressed. I have liked learning phonics and Riggs and am impressed with the way they learn. Every friend I have in this area with children in other schools deals with homework, so someone who is unhappy with this would be hard up finding a school for their kids.
