All four of my kids have attended Axl. My two have been there the longest since Kindergarten and they're now in 5th and 3rd grade. They love being at Axl. They speak highly of the teachers they've had from year to year. My son has had a good emotional support team that keep him on track and staff that he feels safe with. Axl is Always trying to new things to keep the students involved and my kids are really excited about the new Wellness program they are starting this year. If I ever had concerns or questions I've been able to express my feelings with staff and come to a resolution. The things I would say some staff need to work on is transportation for All students who need it especially those families that have been there longer. Also some staff should hear the families out when it comes to their kids and they express things that would help their kid be engaged more or want to be at school. The parents know their kids best and what would help them do their best and grow.

“A school cannot teach children accountability while its leadership refuses to practice it.”

The students were the best part of my time at AXL. That is why I believe parents should scrutinize the leadership culture at this school.

My time teaching at AXL was characterized by poor communication, inconsistent treatment, exclusion, and a troubling lack of accountability when concerns were raised. I waited two months for a permanent hiring decision and, roughly six weeks after being hired, was placed on non-renewal without first being consulted about the situation.

More importantly, I witnessed serious behavioral and student-safety concerns, including sexualized behavior, that in my view did not always receive the follow-through or intervention I would expect from a school entrusted with children’s well-being. Schools cannot prevent every incident; what matters is whether adults investigate, communicate, follow up, and protect students.

Staff instability affects children.* Based on my own count, over 40% of 2025–26 staff either quit, were let go, or were not renewed, including longtime teachers. Students suffer when trusted adults disappear. Several asked why I was leaving, while I had been instructed not to discuss the circumstances of my departure.

The dysfunction continued after my employment ended. I spent days pursuing wages payroll records showed were owed to me. I was initially told I had been paid even though my bank had no record of receiving the money. Most was eventually paid, but a $353.04 discrepancy remains unresolved as of this review.*

I worked in classrooms for more than 15 years before AXL. This experience contributed significantly to my decision to step away from teaching altogether—and not because of the kids. I love my students.

Children learn more at school than academics. They learn what authority, fairness, honesty, and accountability look like. Those lessons shape the adults they become.

If I were a parent considering AXL, I would ask hard questions about staff turnover, student-safety procedures, disciplinary follow-through, communication with families, and how leadership responds when teachers or students raise uncomfortable concerns.

The students deserve conditions in which they feel safe, trusted adults can stay, and good teachers can speak honestly and feel supported. Based on my experience, I have serious concerns about whether AXL’s leadership consistently creates those conditions, and how that's affecting our future.

As a parent of a current student at AXL Academy, we've had a great experience, AXL provides a structured environment. Ms. Medina has been a wonderful teacher, she always kept parents updated about homework, field trips, and events that occurred. Her patient and support throughout the year with my daughter She has grown so much confidence, made so many great friends, and looked forward to going to school every day. We're thankful for such a positive 2nd grade experience and now looking forward to 3rd grade with Mrs.Walkerbrooks!

I no longer go to this school, but I felt as if I needed to leave a review about this. I found that I was satisfied with how easy it was, it made me almost excited to go because of how easy everything was—but that could possibly be because I am gifted. I found myself slightly bored by the material, and I found that I was VERY neglected when it came to math. I was encouraged to learn, and become better, and I do appreciate that, although I cannot help but feel as if I wasn't given the materials. At least in my time here, we never really had a stable math teacher, or any teacher in that case. Teachers would come, and they would go, they'd quit, and then a new one would come in. The substitute teachers do not really care about our learning, I found that our math period was more of a free period. If you want to use that time to learn, then I guess it will benefit you, but if you are every student, including me.. I find that you will be left behind. The students are kind, but also not given the materials to shine as bright as they could. They showed mercy to me when other schools would've devoured me. As all schools do, there will be bullying, but it isn't as bad as other schools. They handle it well, and the students have empathy and care for others. I didn't really learn much that I didn't know already, and other students had hard time grasping the materials. They bring you on many field trips, and try their best with what they have. The only unfortunate part, is that they do not have much to work with. I see a bright future for this school, and I appreciate the 'opportunities' that were made for me. Thank you!

AXL Academy has been a wonderful school for our children. The teachers are highly engaged with students throughout the day, and the staff truly care about creating a positive and supportive learning environment. My children feel safe, welcomed, and excited to come to school every day.

Whenever I have had a question or concern, the staff has always been approachable, supportive, and ready to help. I have seen significant improvement in my children’s academics, and they absolutely love the hands-on learning experiences and activities the school provides.

Another thing I truly appreciate is that there is very minimal bullying, and anytime something does happen, the staff addresses it quickly and works closely with students to provide support and resolve the situation appropriately.

I highly recommend AXL Academy 100%. It is a school community that genuinely cares about students, families, and student success.

I regret bringing my child to this school. I thought charter schools were supposed to offer smaller classrooms and more individualized attention for students, but this school has been extremely disappointing.

When I first enrolled my child, the school made it seem like students would experience frequent field trips and hands-on learning. However, what they call “hands-on learning” feels more like worksheet after worksheet with very little explanation or guidance from teachers.

Communication with parents about student progress is very poor. There also seems to be little control over classroom behavior, making it difficult for students who genuinely want to learn to focus in such chaotic environments.

The bathrooms are frequently vandalized. My child has told me there has been blood on the walls and sanitary products stuck to surfaces. Drugs. Kids breaking sinks while fighting. Chairs being thrown in classrooms. PARENTS defending bullying. Students recording and mocking teachers.

It honestly feels like this school is losing control, and no one seems fully aware of or willing to address what is happening. Administrators are more focused on the remodeling then real issues going on.

The only reason I am giving AXL Academy one star is because I truly feel bad for the teachers who are trying to work in these conditions and may just be overworked but unfortunately it’s starting to affect my child’s education.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about AXL Academy. From the moment our family became part of the school community, we felt welcomed, supported, and truly valued. AXL Academy is not just a school — it is a place where children are encouraged to grow academically, socially, and emotionally in a nurturing and inspiring environment.
What truly sets AXL Academy apart is their commitment to expeditionary learning. The hands-on, project-based approach allows students to dive deeply into subjects, explore real-world connections, and develop critical thinking skills that go far beyond textbooks. Learning feels meaningful and engaging, and you can see how excited the children are to participate and discover new ideas.
Equally important is the safe and supportive space they create for every child. The staff and teachers genuinely care about the students’ well-being. They foster an atmosphere of respect, kindness, and inclusion, ensuring that every child feels heard, valued, and confident to express themselves. It’s comforting as a parent to know that my child is in an environment where emotional safety is just as important as academic success.
AXL Academy is supporting not just education, but the whole child — building character, curiosity, and confidence every single day. We are incredibly grateful to be part of such a thoughtful and dedicated school community.
Highly recommend!

After moving out of the Cherry Creek School District, both of my sons struggled in the Aurora Public Schools system. From the very first day, they expressed that something didn’t feel right. At Mrachek Middle School, one of my sons lasted about four months, and every single day was a struggle just to get him through the doors. We lived three blocks away, yet I had to drive him daily to ensure he went inside. He experienced teasing at times and often felt unheard by his teacher. We tried multiple interventions, and even his therapist worked with him, but nothing seemed to help.

One day, during a conversation, he told me, “I don’t learn that way.” That moment changed everything. I realized he wasn’t unwilling — he needed a different approach. Homeschooling wasn’t an option for us after the challenges we faced during COVID, so I began researching alternative schools. When I toured Axl Academy with him, he immediately said yes. It was the first time in a long time that he felt hopeful about school. He was enrolled in December, and since then, the daily battles have significantly decreased. Our main focus now is simply helping him stay consistent with completing assignments.

My younger son was on a 504 plan at Vassar Elementary School and felt discouraged daily. He believed he was being targeted and overlooked in class and often came home defeated. Since transferring, he comes home happy. Every day has been a good day.

Axl Academy has been a breath of fresh air for our family. The individualized approach, understanding staff, and supportive environment have made a noticeable difference in both of my boys. For the first time in a while, they feel seen, heard, and capable — and as a parent, that means everything.

Elvia is a truly wonderful second grade teacher who makes learning both meaningful and enjoyable for her students. She creates a warm, welcoming classroom environment where every child feels valued, supported, and encouraged to do their best.
Her patience and kindness stand out immediately. Elvia understands that each child learns differently, and she takes the time to ensure every student fully understands the material. She explains lessons clearly, uses creative teaching methods, and makes even challenging topics fun and engaging.
Elvia also does an excellent job of building her students' confidence. She celebrates their successes—big and small-and gently guides them through any difficulties. Her positive attitude and enthusiasm for teaching inspire her students to love learning.
Communication with parents is another one of her strengths. She keeps families informed, listens carefully to concerns, and works as a true partner in each child's education.
Overall, Elvia is a dedicated, caring, and highly effective teacher. Any second grader is fortunate to have her as their teacher, and she makes a lasting impact on her students both academically and personally.

The students however are rude, arrogant, selfish people that are absolutely horrid.
They are CONSTANTLY body shaming, making each other and teachers cry, being racist, making fun of each other by; using health, disorders, insecurities ,e.t.c against you.
So unless you want your child to experience this I suggest you go somewhere else.

AXL academy is a great school. They are great at teaching by hands on. They always keep the parents informed with school activities. My son enrolled for kindergarten and is now in 1st grade and will continue through 8th grade. We love it here!

This is a fantastic place to teach. Teachers are given freedom to do what is best for children. We are respected and supported by our peers, leadership, families, and scholars. Leadership truly cares about the staffs’ well being.

Posted: April 17, 2021

Posted: May 5, 2019

They are not compassionate at all. I heard middle schoolers telling other children 'nobody loves you.' They make up slanderous lies about people. They attack and hit each other. They leadership shrugs their shoulders and throws up their hands. What can we do? How about tell them stop?
I'm leaving this review because someone advised me to work there, and I wish they would have been honest about how bad it was. I would never work there again and I plan on moving because if this is how children are allowed to act in Aurora, I will move before I send my children to one of these schools. Second experience at a school in Aurora. The schools in APS are atrocious.

Posted: May 5, 2019

Don't go to them with any problems. They want to sit in their offices and the executive director wants to complain at meetings about the work. He lives far away from Aurora so he has no skin in the game. It's just a paycheck to him. Before him the school almost got shut down for mismanagement of funds, so I guess this is an improvement.

Posted: May 5, 2019

The special ed teM is doing their best with what they are asked to do.

Posted: May 5, 2019

This is a school that encourages bullying by rewarding the bullies. Do not work there. You will be bullied by the leadership, staff, and students. I have gone back and forth on leaving a review of this horrible place, but people should be warned. The other reviews about how it's a warehouse and the executive director doesn't even try to keep teachers are honest. The executive director gets rid of teachers for no reason. He reminds me of Homer's boss from The Simpsons.

Posted: May 5, 2019

This place is a daycare for children. No real work.

Posted: May 5, 2019

The teachers change all the the time. Kids lie and get teachers in trouble. The management blames the teachers.

Posted: May 5, 2019

It was so horrible. I can't even tell you how bad. They were nice to me at first, and then they turned on me. I feel sorry for anyone who goes there. You can do better. There are long term sub jobs in DPS that pay the same. No one should go through what I did. They should feel ashamed for how they treated me. What those children go through...I shudder at the horror. It's like Lord of the Flies.

As a sub teacher this was the worst school I have seen in 2 years. No Homework for 7th or 8th graders.

Posted: March 1, 2019

The teachers are trying, but leadership is completely lacking.

Posted: March 1, 2019

The worst school I have taught in 2 years of teaching. The children show no respect to teachers and are not encouraged to give any respect. This is a warehouse for children

I would make sure you have an Executive Director that is honest with people in the position. The current person avoids conflict and has a lot of teachers leaving. They have over 15 not coming back for the next school year. The Admin need to show they love their job and do home visits, participate in the community that the school is located in and know everyone by name. I'm sad to see amazing teachers leaving but they are worth having a better experience. ALL of ADMIN are in charge of making sure people are safe, happy and owning that they caused a big problem. When you have so many staff leaving it's on Admin. As for scholars they are so said that they won't be seeing their teachers coming back. This is not a place for intervention or for scholars that are gifted. They don't commit to that. Maybe instead of having a communications person since that didn't work/having all these teachers leaving hire a dean of culture for the building.

AXL Academy provides a different type of school than those found around Aurora. At this school, you can feel the sense of community and passion for learning. Go AXL!

Posted: April 23, 2017

AXL Academy is a community, and we love it. Let's start with the school functions: Community Meeting every week where classes get together to play games, share "positive referrals" and honor Scholar of the Week, PJ reading days, a Multi-Cultural night that boasts some of the best home-made food Colorado has to offer, a Fall festival with food, cotton candy, jump houses, and a dunk tank where kids could dunk their favorite (or least favorite) teacher, a Talent Show that is a night to remember, Expedition Nights that allow families to see what each class is learning, Student Led Conferences that are thorough and individualized, and a middle school sports program where you can see staff and teachers of all grades cheering. Our girls come home excitedly chattering about walls of kindness, interactive notebooks, class pets, and science demonstrations.

The teachers are supportive of kids, not just at school. You can find them at out of school sports events, birthday parties, and family events. They had a probability carnival where my daughter got to play carnival games created by older kids (she learned carnival games are "unfair"). The teachers take the kids on field trips more often than other schools. They had a food drive and sent home entire Thanksgiving meals to families in need. Our middle schooler got to prepare food for the Ronald McDonald house. One of my daughter's grades had a kid that ran away and 3 teachers showed up to school in the middle of the night on a Friday to help the police with their search. You can find teachers playing card games during their lunch with kids, spending their lunch with a "lunch bunch" of kids, spending before and after school tutoring, playing 4 square during recess, a kindergarten teacher took a 5th grader to red-rocks on weekend as a reward, middle schoolers attended a social studies fair, girls technology camps, and robotics competitions, teachers coach "Girls on the Run" and run half marathons with students, organizing crew theme days where they dress up with their classes as a reward (this year we saw puppies, nerds, minions, and ninja turtles), I could go on and on.

No school is perfect, and it is true that AXL doesn't have a gym or overflowing technology, but they LOVE their kids and families, it is a true community.

We love Axl Academy. Thank you Tracy, Ms. Zobeck, Ms Jones, and Mr. Far. This school has been a blessing for our family and especially my granddaughter. What it lacks in a traditional school setting, like a gym, it more than makes up in the character training of our young people. The only negative experience we've had is in regards to the school office and it was at the beginning of the year so it was a very busy time. No one or no organization is perfect.

Posted: August 16, 2016

Axl Academy has ignited a fire in my son for learning. He came from Aurora Public Schools, where he was miserable about going there. We as parents were treated so poorly. The principal of Iowa Elementry, ripped him apart during parent teacher conferences. The teachers at Iowa, were great. The administration and office staff were awful to communicate with. Down right snotty at times. I feel bad for the teachers there, they deserve better.

We as consumers, are so quick to do a poor review for horrible treatment. But, so slow to take the time to give a great review.

Thank you Axl Academy for the gift you have given our family. My son is finally excited about learning. He's joyful and happy when he gets home. He Tells us great stories about their subjects and everything he learned. I just wish we would have found you sooner. Thank you, thank you THANK YOU!!!

Axl Academy was a huge blessing.
They get 100 stars from us!!

What a year AXL has had!! While the school has been through many changes this year, my kid and his class have remained steady and I find the school has become an even better community. While he doesn't like the food-too bland- he loves everything else and has made a ton of great friends.

Axl has been an excellent experience for our two girls. They both have shown amazing personal responsibility for their school work and are excited to go to school every day! The best parts are how the faculty takes time to praise and highlight positive behaviors (in group settings) and give the kids a sense of ownership for their education goals. The teachers continue to inspire kids to think big and stay engaged. There has recently been a leadership change and we are all excited about parent involvement increasing as community-minded plans are being laid. That, along with the experiential learning aspects, is a huge part of what keeps school fun and exciting! We also love that uniforms keep out drama and distraction. Luckily, our girls still have opportunities to express themselves so if really has become a non-issue. Phew! If you are looking for a great school with passionate, dedicated teachers who do more than prep for tests, Axl is a wonderful option - without tuition!

AXL has definitely gone through, and is continuing to go through, some transitions from when it first opened. However, my children have been at AXL for 5 years now and I wouldn t want them to go anywhere else. I think the thing that makes the most difference to a child s education no matter what their ability is, is feeling understood and cared about by the teacher. When they feel that connection, it makes them want to put forth extra effort and try their best. AXL definitely achieves that. Another thing I love is that AXL s code of character is just as important as the academic side. Of course, no school is perfect. But to me, the positives far outweigh the negatives. I feel very privileged to have my kids attending this free charter and am grateful to have the CHOICE!

Posted: January 22, 2015

Like the previous reviews AXL has had some bumps in the 4 years we have been there. This year many changes have been made and it really feels like a family. I am glad I chose to keep my boys here. Brent has really stepped up and watching the staff fight for our kids has been amazing! Tracie has done an outstanding job in her new role increasing communication! It is true that AXL does not have certain things that bigger schools have such as, a gym and a library, but they also have many things that you won't find at those bigger schools like single gendered classrooms (much less drama especially for the middle school kids) and they are able to learn in gender specific direction that has been proven to be more effective, uniforms, field work. When I drop off my children (6th grader and kinder) ALL the staff and teachers know ALL the children by name. My niece recently left due to a move and is now in a cherry creek middle school where she is so bored. It truly takes a village to raise a well rounded child and we have found that at AXL. I urge you if you are looking for a school where education and values are top priorities give AXL a chance.

I really love the work my son as being doing with a teacher by the name of Mrs. Anderson his behavior has been out of this world. Before my son started at Axl Academy he was not focus at school at all but since he started working with Mrs. Anderson he can't wait to get to school and work with her. Thank you Mrs. Anderson and thank you Axl. We need more teachers like Mrs. Anderson.

I attended AXL Academy when it first started in 2008. In the begging it was an excellent school. I am now in highschool and I am reflecting on the school. The education is excellent. I learned topics well above my grade level. The community was amazing! The staff and several scholars have shaped me to be prepared for what ls next, BUT there is a lot of room for improvement at AXL. The loss of great teachers over the years effected my class. In our 8th grade year we had 6 teachers that left our middle school. We don't have lockers or a gym and our playground was parking lot. I believe AXL can strive into a better school if they get third act together.

Posted: September 9, 2014

Thumbs down. The school is way to small, horrible teachers, no gym, no nothing. And I feel really bad about the middle schoolers. Seriously? No lockers, no library, and as I said, no gym. I know this is a K-8 school, but seriously you guys need to work on your school, and make a better playground. The playground is A PARKING LOT. Seriously? I've attended this school for 6 years. 6 years! And I decided not to pass into the middle part of the school. If they at least had 2 of the things I mentioned above, then I would've considered even thinking about going back. WORK ON THE SCHOOL IT NEEDS IMPROVING

Posted: August 17, 2014

This appears to be a very diverse school. My child is flourishing at AXL. But the biggest impression made on me by this school is its emphasis on character. I think it is something that is truly lacking in the vast majority of public schools. AXL is exceptional in this regard.

Posted: April 20, 2014

First year at AXL with elementary and middle students.Wish I read the comments before I enrolled. Curriculum OUTSTANDING. Faculty HORRIBLE. Nice but their lack of competency is so bad it out ways the great curriculum. Teachers, counselors, directors and principle make up rules as they go. Unwritten rules are unfair to the kids. When caught in a lie make every excuse possible, more concerned with justifying their wrong than fixing their mistake. Do exactly what they tell kids not to do; no integrity or ownership. Lost great teacher this year. STEP program is a joke; it s not fair and not effective at all. Scholar dollars program wonderful concept but terribly managed by some. No gym. The playground is a parking lot. Young inexperienced teachers w/ no kids themselves coupled with overcrowded classes spells disaster. Need more parent/grandparent teachers? My kids perform well academically. Feel sorry for kids with any challenges because this school is EXTREMELY petty. My standards are too high for this AXL faculty and it starts at the top (principle - teachers), it is so bad you really wish someone from Candid Camera came out and relived you of this bad joke. Retraining required.

Posted: April 12, 2014

One word. Joke - Poor location, inadequate teachers and staff and ready to pull after this year.

Great PK-8 school for kids in Aurora. Excellent teachers. All really care about our kids. So much better than our local elementary school and middle school.

Axl has an expeditionary way of learning, which is great for most kiddos. They have uniforms which is great to be seen as the person not brand names of clothing. Healthy eating strongly encouraged however the hot lunches are something to be desired taste and cost wise. They have small classes from preschool to 8th that helps so much with the one on one attention they need. Not a whole lot of coed classes so therefore they can concentrate on school work. I Dislike that there is no music, nor field for kids to play, nor gym classes but with clubs hoping the students get what they need there. Come the end of the year the lack of staff retention, hoping the glitch there gets worked out because there have been some pretty awesome teachers in there that have left after only a year some not even lasting that long.

Posted: November 2, 2013

This school has been a gift to the community. We are blessed to be members of this magical community. Our class and our teacher are warm, kind and we love being a part of the AXL family.

Posted: November 2, 2013

This school is changing kids' lives in a very meaningful way through education, healthy living, excellent mentoring and modeling from teachers. It is the best we have found. I don't understand what the negative comments are even about. Smart staff, underserved kids, grateful parents and lots of love and hard work fills the place to move us all forward.

My daughter has attended this school for the past two years and I couldn't be more happier with all of the developing and growing she has done. My son has to go to another APS school because he is in Special Ed and I have seen the comparrison first hand between schools. Axl blows the other school out of the water! My daughter has teachers who truly care about her and her achievements. They don't think of teaching as just a job, I see the passion they have for teaching. The front office and paras are always smiling and welcoming, I always feel included in her education. She wouldn't want to go anywhere else even if I gave her the choice. I feel like they are challenged academically and I think it is great that they learn to speak spanish at an early age.

Posted: April 20, 2013

Horrible school. Never put your kids there. Poor education. Teachers change all the time. Kids have to struggle with unprofessional substitute teachers all year. What kind of education kids can receive? All 2013 school year kids never had ELD teacher. Instead of that they force to learn Spanish. Principal is selfish. She never think about kids first

Posted: November 15, 2012

My child is doing great at this school academically. and I am very pleased with her accomplishments. However, I'm disappointed in the administration of the school. My main concerns is the children and preached integrity and ethics, yet the administration does not act with integrity or ethics. The head of school seems to be under the impression she is a queen and this is her throne. Does the head of school not understand she would not have a school or her salary if it wasn't for the scholars? In a financial crisis for schools, her decision is to hire her a personal assistance over a math tutor or an art teacher, or someone who would benefit the children. Afterall, the school is about children, not the head of school...or so I always thought. This decision is very selfish. And then there is the director of operations, who has no children and has never worked in a school, yet in charge of how the school operates. The director of Ops never smiles, doesn't talk to the kids, and hides in her office. We need a friendly face in the school not an angry person who barks demands. Until the school administration starts putting the children first, the school will continue to struggle.

I have a Kindergartener and a Second grader. This is their first year at AXL Academy and I could not be more pleased! I have not seen a group of teachers care more about their students than the teachers here. My children are greeted everyday by at least 3 happy - smiling adults. I feel so good knowing that the entire staff loves these children and truly wants the best for them. AXL's style of learning is much different than other public schools. They teach the students important content in an enriching "hands on" fashion. My students are learning how to learn and how to think for themselves, which is a really important skill to have in the 21st century. I am thankful that the Administration deals quickly and abruptly with disciplinary actions. There can be a lot of chaos in today's classroom, but this school tries to "nip it in the bud" So far, I am very happy with this school and the caring teachers and staff. I think AXL has come a long way from the opening of the school until now. This is a great place for your children! P.S. I love that my students are already starting to speak Spanish every chance they get! Too Cool!
