We came from another elementary school in the area, and could not be happier with the luck of getting into Bromwell. The teachers, both classroom and specials, have impressed us with their aptitude, care and communication. School leadership seems excellent and very approachable, and the vibes at pickups/dropoffs and the various school events has been amazing. Their big new playground in the schoolyard about to be completed, with the backdrop of Cherry Creek, will make it even better!

Our experience with Bromwell has been phenomenal. We came from a school where teachers rarely if ever communicate with the families what theyre learning and how to support the classroom. Bromwell excels at clearly communicating what is going on in each of our kids rooms and how we can support their experience. This has been so beneficial for our family as we were constantly stressed and supplementing our kids education at home to bridge the gap they were missing at school. As a result of changing schools, our family is happier, the kids are thriving, and our kids are getting what they need and more. We couldnt be happier.

Bromwell excels at 1) staffing: passionate and skilled teachers and staff, 2) emotional learning: they prioritize wellness and mental health and incorporate it in the curriculum, 3) community: there are many diverse events and opportunities for families to get involved, and 4) appropriate rigor: I feel like my child is challenged and thriving - and as a result, he loves school.

We are current parents of multiple children at this school. We love the teachers, leadership, and school community. The academic results are the best in the district, and our kids genuinely love going to school herewhich is very important, especially at this age. Like all public schools, funding can be a challenge, but the schools leadership really makes an effort to maximize the resources it gets from the district beyond what would ordinarily be allocated to a school of this size. Some of the prior reviews are outdated-music is not only back but the music teacher is AMAZING, and enrollment has increased substantially. We value diversity and are grateful our kids arent only going to school with affluent kids. They are interacting with kids and adults from all walks of life who are a part of a positive and thriving school community. Like all schools, the best thing to do is tour it to see it for yourself and not solely rely on online reviews.

My kids have been thriving at Bromwell for over 2yrs. The teachers are so dedicated to each and every child, and work hard to meet each child where they are, every day. Leadership continues to prioritize students and staff. The community is involved, welcoming and volunteer to help make the school a special place that feels like a family.

Bromwell has created an exceptional learning environment for our son. He has grown academically and emotionally and we attribute this to the wonderful teachers and staff. Our son feels welcome, safe, and supported. We couldnt be more pleased.

This is a great community school! My daughters have made lasting friendships at Bromwell. My youngest is in 4th grade, and Mr McGrew is a fantastic teacher that has really inspired her to be excited about learning.

Reading some of the reviews on this page broke my heart. I have two children and have been an active parent in Bromwell for 8 years now. I have seen many changes in leadership as noted below and they have come for a variety of reasons. But what is not mentioned is that there is a core set of experiance committed teachers who have dedicated their careers and lives to setting an exceptional standard of teaching and care for the students within Bromwell. Our family lives in the neighborhood and have made many friendships with families who have attended and still attend Bromwell. One of the greatest parts about the school is its committment to community and a healthy and safe learning environment for its students. This little school is majical, filled with love and a committment from its community to thrive and provide so much for its students. If you want your children in a small school where everyone knows each other and the teachers and support staff truely know and care about your child this is the school. If you want your child to have resources to understand the social/emotional asspects of life and to value community and get to be a kid in a safe space every day Bromwell is that place.

Bromwell has been a wonderful school for my children. The teachers and loving and kind, but challenging each child to do their best. I have been very engaged in the school community and have felt welcome to sit in on classes and communicate with teachers as issues arise. One of my children is now in middle school and thriving. I believe the education she received at Bromwell, as well as the confidence she gained from her teachers, the staff and her friend group, have contributed to her success. I feel lucky my girls have had such a strong start in their academic careers, and grateful that their social and emotional well being is also prioritized. Bromwell is a special little neighborhood school.

There are some excellent teachers at the school who really care about the school and the students. That's the really only positive thing I can say about this school. The leadership at the school is horrible. Valecia has some insane vendetta against the donor and other longstanding families and has driven them out of the school over the past few years (less than 5 years ago, there were 321 kids at the school, now there are less than 300-even with exhausting their choice lists...if that helps to picture the amount of families that have left/leave each year), which has resulted in many budget issues for the school-as the donor money was used to "bridge the gap." The school is no longer able to afford a music teacher and outsources Think 360, and now instead of a traditional music we have one quarter of yoga ball African drumming or song writing by a awards ATTENDING musician (so they bought a ticket to an awards show just like anyone can buy and they are now apparently qualified to teach music at Bromwell...). My kids do enjoy Art & Gym, but STEAM is literally just playing on the computer building google slide presentations or creating "art" out of toilet paper rolls and cereal boxes-its not as impressive as it may sound. Additionally, with the exodus neighborhood of families, there have been a lot more kids with behavioral problems choice in-which is fine in and of itself, but once you take into consideration the lack of funding and staffing to accommodate their needs, its hard on everyone. This does seem to be the school's passion population though, because while the school has no music teacher or traditional reading/math interventionists, they have 5-6 employees purely dedicated to the children's social/emotional health and those with behavioral issues that need more attention.

Bromwell is a solid elementary school working within the confines of being a Denver Public School. Our children have all been greatly supported socially and emotionally, especially through the last few years of global pandemic. They are able to manage their stress, articulate their emotions, and cope with both the ups and downs of life in ways I didn't understand until I was an adult. Academically, I wish they were pushed a little harder, but they are learning and growing. We have enjoyed being a part of the community and participating in the school garden, family movie night, class performances (mostly before COVID), parent learning opportunities as well as opportunities to help both at school-wide events and in the classroom. I truly believe Bromwell staff has provided the best environment for our children over the past few years within the emotionally unstable environment under budget constraints that a well performing school with a fairly affluent student body has in DPS (look up per pupil funding in the district for more information).

Listen, my child had a PTSD diagnosis coming in to Bromwell, staff were made aware right away. The was negligence to initiate a behavior plan, IEP/504 meeting, and train adults. Due to this, leadership chose to call the police (campus safety and security) over 7 times. They showed up with bullet proof vests and a GUN holstered on their belt. The met my crying and terrified 6yo in a closed room. This school traumatized my child with a Learning Disability.
It does seem beautiful on the inside, and many children do like it here, but that privilege seems to be at the cost of equity. If you child does not fall in line with the cherry picking practices you can expect police to be called on your child, soft suspensions and threatening hostile actions from leadership.

Thank God for Bromwell. We choices into Bromwell from another DPS school. It has been like night and day. The teachers actually care, the class sizes are reasonable and the leadership is fantastic. Our children are both thriving at Bromwell. They seriously love to go to school every day. At the other school bullying was a huge problem. At Bromwell they aren't having it, which, sadly, is refreshing. All schools should take bullying as seriously. Special shout out to Ms. Ford, Ms. Farrell, Mr. Gallegher, Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Duran and, of course, Ms. VonWeise. Best elementary school in town!

Our experience at this school has been entirely neutral. We feel fortunate to live in a neighborhood that has an above-average school, knowing that there are many inferior school in DPS. But for all of the resources and parental involvement at this place it falls short in many ways. The staff and parents are generally very well meaning. We all want the best for our kids. But like with all organizations it starts at the top. And this school lacks any continuity in that regard. If you look at the schools that are trending in the right direction they have a strong leader (or group of leaders) that has instilled a culture of kindness, effort, and striving for excellence. In our opinion Bromwell has lacked that for all the years that we've been there, and the school continues to rest on its (dated) laurels.

We found that about half of the teachers were great, and the other half were neutral-to-negative. There seems to be a high rate of teacher turnover and a meaningful percentage of the income teachers don't have much (if any) prior experience.

The emphasis at this school is to meet/exceed standardized test scores. As such, there seems to be more of an emphasis on drilling vs. character building. Bromwell tests reasonably well, which isn't surprising given the parental support/resources, but falls-down in the area of pushing students beyond their limits and developing character and communication skills.

There have been four principals (one interim) at Bromwell in the past five years. The front office is lightly-staffed (no Vice-Principal, for example), and the seemingly-constant change of leadership has resulted in there being very little culture at this school. For as great a reputation as Bromwell has had over the years, it has felt to us like "there is no there there".

The talks-the-talk in this regard but I have strong evidence to suggest that it's all window dressing. I'll stay away from the details, but if you have a child who may be prone to bullying (from past/pre-school experience, etc.) this isn't the right school for your family.

We feel so lucky that our 3 boys are studying at Bromwell. Each of them are addressed for their own needs. This is a small environment where everyone is included!

Bromwell has fantastic teachers and support staff that have helped my children transition during difficult learning periods. Bromwell has amazing office staff that know your children and their schedules better than the parents and are an extension of your care while your kids are out of reach.

There were soar awards when it was an eagle and now paw pride awards for the bear. These inspire students to be better as they see their peers recognized for their good acts depending on the core value of the month.

My son had a 504 Plan that was created at the school so he needed additional support. This school accommodated for his slower reading ability.

I disagree with take home homework as a general rule. Research shows students perform better with unstructured free time and because most kids have after school sports they rarely get unstructured time.

We have been at the school for four years. We have had 3 principals during that time, one being an interim principal. Principal Kohn was kind. She listened to students and took time to really address their concerns. Our current principal is a new administrator and it shows in his overall experience of how he handles different issues. There is a lot of potential for making Bromwell what it once was as a blue school. It has fallen in the past years to a green rated school. I believe this is because of transitioning leadership.

With our public and private school experiences, I am very confident that Bromwell is one of the top schools in Denver. The principal Andrew Hodges and staff make this school great. They are creative and intelligent in their programming, and we see it in our child. Students are having fun learning, and social emotional as well as academic needs are being met at Bromwell. We are so impressed with the quality of staff here. It is truly a very special and inclusive community here, and I highly recommend Bromwell for anyone looking for a top elementary school in Denver!

This is my fourth year as a Bromwell Parent. We looked at both public and private options for our children, before they began, and are so pleased that we chose Bromwell. The school building renovation (completed summer of 2015) created well defined, bright spaces for each of the classes and updated the infrastructure of the school. The strong community of families brings together parents and students and contributes to ongoing projects around the school and help in the classroom- from landscaping improvement days to small reading group help. The new principal, Andrew Hodges, has created a long term vision for the school (with input from the teachers and parents) that promotes inclusiveness and academic excellence. I recommend Bromwell to any parent, within or outside of school neighborhood boundaries, to have their child learn and grow at a top elementary school in Denver.

Every day I appreciate Bromwell more for how it has helped my children develop and learn. The staff in 2017/2018 is exceptional and so many improvements across the board with the new principal Andrew Hodges. A strong sense of community, academics, giving and more. Our family has been at several Denver Public Schools having had great experiences at all of them. We love that Bromwell is a strong neighborhood school while being welcoming of choice students. We are really excited to have new leadership and long term planning in place and look forward to being at Bromwell for many years to come. It is a warm, healthy environment and our son loves it.

The newly renovated building is fabulous. It is bright, with lots of space for small, breakout instruction adjacent to classrooms. With smaller class sizes, and each teacher supported by paraprofessionals as well as intervention and gifted and talented teachers, all students are learning and having their individual needs met. The staff is mostly young, energetic and engaged. All 3 of my children thrive here.

Ongoing rulership by horrible principal driving out new teachers and those who in the past supported her, seeing that this is no person to run an elementary school. Now after remodeling the school, they didn't have the budget to keep their library open. Its been reduced to books in the hallway. Sad message to the students about the importance of reading and libraries in a democracy.

We would NOT recommend this school to our friends and neighbors; there are better public schools nearby. Don t be fooled by the renewed Distinguished rating because this school has major problems. Ten years ago it was a great school with a seasoned, collegial, and skilled teaching staff, a welcoming and friendly community atmosphere, and, most importantly, happy and high achieving kids. Unfortunately, much has changed the past 5 years culminating in a large parent uprising last year during which they expressed their dissatisfaction with the school principal of 5 years who fired 75% of the teachers, programs cancelled, botched funding, and is unprofessionalism on many levels. There are still some good teachers (4th grade especially), however, the current 5th grade class is a total disaster with disinterested teachers who allowed a toxic classroom environment with lots of bullying problems due to their lack of discipline and inadequate leadership from the principal. Several students left 5th grade mid-year because the experience was so bad which prompted DPS to bring in a behavior specialist to try to deal with bullying problems. Better Options - Cory, Steck, or Teller.

Bromwell was (and had been for decades) one of the very best public schools in Denver. Over the last five years, the academic scores have declined, unique and enriching programs have been dismantled, and nearly all of the experienced, creative faculty members have left. I would no longer recommend Bromwell to other parents and have decided to transfer my child out of the school.

Under this principal, and DPS's backing, this formerly Distinguished school is now rated average, while the schools it was compared to have retained their high ratings and ten additional schools have attained Distinguished rating! It's not just the rating, many positive traits of this school are gone and the principal is consistently MIA! Numerous parent groups have gone to DPS to address the problems, all have been dismissed, including a majority of the teachers who spoke up last year - 45% of them are now gone! Who's next? There is a disconnect between this principal, the school community and reality. The school is in desperate need of new leadership in conjunction with a new group of parents on oversight committees to rejuvenate this school. If you're interested in this school, meet with the current principal, talk to her, listen to her in a public setting, observe her with students and in the lunch room/hallways, ask students from 3rd thru 5th grades what their impression of their leader is. Then do the same with some of the other leading DPS K5 schools and you ll understand first hand. We hope to see this once great community school returned to its roots and former glory.

Having recently put our last child through Bromwell and just heard about this site, we felt it imperative to point out our experience with the school for 14 years. Bromwell was the pride of our community for 20 plus years, a school the community built up along with award winning teachers, programs and an excellent education. Since the current principal took over 4 years ago, this once nationally recognized, award winning, well grounded, 'distinguished' school is no more. Regrettably the school has essentially been dismantled and survives on it's former stature. The school lost 40% of its staff last year and had a turnover of 85% in 4 years, yet DPS and a small, tight knit group of parents stand behind the decimation. Having seen all four of our children go through Bromwell, the difference between our youngest child having recently gone through the school is in stark contrast to the first 3. Fifth grade was a throw away year and we can only hope remaining talented teachers don't leave. It is our hope that newer parents are made aware of the problems of non transparency and autocratic leadership in concert with a handful of parents so that they can restore our cherished Bromwell!

Bromwell was an excellent school in it's hayday-- I have sent 3 children there and the youngest is getting a far different experince than the older ones. The best teachers have left or are trying to move. We are left with new and inexperineced teachers replacing them who are not as passionate about teaching. Many of our cultural programs have slowly faded away due to a new principal who believes that kids should all be taught in the exact same DPS model -- which unfortunately for our above average kids-- is not the best way to learn. The school was fabulous about 7-8 years ago and before. It is no longer that school. I would send my kids to Steck now if I had young ones.

The negative reviews are pretty shocking, coming from a parent of two children at Bromwell currently. Our children are having a great experience both academically and culturally at Bromwell and we have not yet had a teacher who we were not totally impressed with. The teachers seem to have just the right amount of push such that there is a healthy challenge for them to advance, but it is not causing a lot of stress on the kids. Our children regularly come home with a positive attitude about learning and exploring and we have to credit the teachers with this. We have gotten to know many of the teachers personally and have not heard a bad word about their experience at the school. There has been some turn-over at the school as others have mentioned, but this has not had any impact on our children's experience at Bromwell. One other thing to add, every family that we know who has come to Bromwell from another school has had a bit of catch up to do. It is always hard to compare the academic performance of schools but the feedback we get from new families tells us that Bromwell is doing well to advance our kids academically. Hope this helps.

The teachers and school were amazing, however the principal who took over the school in 2009 has decimated the staff, lowered morale to an unheard of low and brought down the school's distinguished rating. Only a handful of the original teachers responsible for this school's success are left. She has been responsible for the departure of 18 staff during her brief tenure through terminations, premature retirements and voluntary resignations - unheard of in the realm of top rated schools. This school was one of the crown jewels of the DPS system with a distinguished rating for more than 15 years and this principal brought its rating down to about average. Why in the world would anyone come into a successful school and systematically dismantle all the key aspects of its success including many of its award winning teachers? Tragic!

The teachers are amazing, however the turmoil coming down from the principal's office has cast an ugly shadow over the school. Seven staff members left this years and looks like there will be another exodus this year. The award wining teaching staff is leaving because of the principal. This isn't the great school it used to be.

Pulled from the DPS website, here are Bromwell's School Performance Framework (SPF) scores for the past several years. (The SPF scores are DPS "report card" scores for schools, and the scores are mostly determined by academic performance and growth. You can read all about it yourself at http://spf.dpsk12.org/) Year 2007-08 85% Year 2008-09 87% (New principal arrives in Fall 2009.) Year 2009-10 80% Year 2010-11 80% Year 2011-12 76% This can't be called rising performance by any definition. And now six teachers are all leaving at the same time. This isn't the kind of change that's needed; it's the kind to be avoided. A brighter spotlight needs to be brought on this school to explain the falling scores and exodus of teachers.

As a parent of two students attending Bromwell, I have been impressed with many aspects of the school and disappointed in a few others. First, test scores have been rising - see DPS website. The scores have tracked nicely with other comparable schools such as Steck & Corey. However, all DPS schools seem to spend too much time on testing. From the science and Shakepeare fairs to the school wide art projects, the students have many opportunities to express themselves. Individual teachers bring passion to the classroom and achieve undeniably solid results. The principal's project for the year is the Accelerated Reader program which the Department of Education states has no discernible impact on student reading fluency. It does no harm, but it is far from cutting edge learning practice. The principal is a competent administrator and should be commended for trying to work magic with big cuts to budgets. However, there does seem to be bit too much turmoil for an elementary school. Fortunately, Bromwell parents contribute mightily in time to making the school successful. As you well know, the teachers and the principal can only do so much.

Bromwell has been through much needed change over the past few years The new principal is a strong instructional leader and is setting higher standards. This change has been hard for some, but Bromwell remains a fabulous community of learning for children - meeting the educational needs of children with small group instruction, differentiation in instruction, professional development for staff, a broad range of the arts and everyday p/e. The school has over 90% participation rate in its annual giving campaign - people love the school and generously give back to it.
