We’ve had such a wonderful experience at this school. The staff is dedicated, supportive, and truly committed to helping every child grow. The tutoring support and after-school sports programs have been amazing opportunities for my child. I highly recommend this school to any family looking for a caring and engaging environment.

My experience at this school was deeply disappointing due to ongoing issues with administration and overall school culture. The leadership environment felt toxic, with frequent instances of unprofessional, threatening, and at times bullying behavior toward staff. Rather than fostering collaboration and trust, there appeared to be a clear divide between an “in-crowd” and the rest of the teaching staff, which contributed to a hostile and unhealthy workplace.
There was also a concerning lack of focus on academics and student success. Chronic student absenteeism was not meaningfully addressed, and there seemed to be little urgency or accountability around improving attendance or supporting student learning. As a result, teachers were often left to manage significant gaps in learning without adequate support or intervention systems.
Staff were not treated as valued professionals, and morale was consistently low. Communication from administration was often unclear or dismissive, and there was little evidence that teacher or student well-being was a priority.
While there are students and educators at this school who deserve a positive and supportive environment, meaningful change in leadership, accountability, and school culture is necessary for that to happen.

While the school presents itself as supportive and student-centered, my experience as a staff member was very different. Communication from administration was often unclear, expectations shifted frequently, and there was little regard for staff well being.

During my time at the school, staff turnover was extremely high, 6 teachers resigned within a four month span, which speaks to the sustainability of the work environment. Teachers were routinely expected to take on responsibilities well beyond their roles, including duties typically handled by office staff, nursing staff, and administration, without adequate support or training.

Additionally, teachers were required to manage all student behavior independently. Despite the presence of severe behaviors, there was no functional MTSS or behavior support process in place, leaving both students and teachers without appropriate interventions or administrative backing.

The Special Education department was similarly overwhelmed and under-resourced, with expectations that were difficult to meet given staffing levels and the lack of systems in place. This placed additional strain on both general education and SPED staff and raised concerns about adequate support for students with higher needs.

I would encourage prospective employees to ask detailed questions about staff support, behavior systems, special education structures, and overall workplace culture before accepting a position here.

My child has attended this school since Kindergarten and I have seen a steady decline in both academics, extracurricular, and leadership over the past two years. I am sad to say this is not an academic institution that I wish my child to continue attending. In my observance it feels as though the administrative educators are not effective and use fear as a way of managing their teachers. The teachers work long hours and in general seem dedicated to education, but are not supported by leadership. I would not recommend sending your child to this school and with budget cuts in the district would not be surprised if the charter were to be closed by DPS in the coming years. They have showed poor academic growth year over year and continue to loose excellent educators because of their misguided leadership.

They are never visible, never answer emails, and in general feel that they are above everyone else. The atmosphere in the school is not welcoming.

Putting my student in this school was the worst thing I could have done. The school leaders are more interested in teaching my child to drum than to read. I feel bad for the teachers. They get yelled at by the administration and the parents. Students that graduated from the school have struggled academically in middle school.

I actually feel bad for many of the teachers. Many are first or second year educators that have not yet developed classroom management and the school administration is not good as assisting with teacher development.

SOAR has a large immigrant population that use homework to understand how their student is doing in the class. SOAR leadership just last year 2014/2015 decided that they would give minimal homework. Since the teachers do not want to reach out to the parents you never know what is happening in the classroom.

The administration does not have integrity. They are not transparent about what is happening in the school. When you try to bring a different perspective they immediately dismiss your concerns.

As a former teacher at SOAR I truly hope they have their stuff figured out for this next school year. For the parents who talk so poorly of the teachers, it is not their fault. Their is a HUGE lack of support from administration and no set rules on how to deal with behavior problems. Teachers are left to their own devices. Their curriculum is a joke and there is absolutely no growth in students academically. I left because I could not keep working for a school that knowingly keeps letting children fall further and further behind. I truly do hope for the sake of students enrolled at SOAR that they have figured it out.

My son attended school here at SOAR for his kindergarten year. I immediately after school started noticed something was not right, not only was the office staff very rude so was a lot of others working there. I received a letter from the school stating they had to spend an additional 50 minutes a day per student to bring them up to their grade level and that most teachers had to be fired because they weren't doing their jobs. There were times when my son did't want to go to school because one of his other teachers would yell at the entire class making them feel scared and for a 5 year old to express himself that way about a place that strictly enforces the rule "NEVER YELL" wasn't very promising. School is a place that should be safe for our children and not to feel afraid because of someone especially someone who works there that is supposed to be teaching and protecting and making them feel safe. One year is all it took for me to realize he will no longer attend this school. The only thing i liked about Soar was his amazing teacher.

As an educator, SOAR basis all decisions and programs in educational research. The more I learn about education and SOAR, the more impressed I am about how they are able to truly execute research based learning. Students are taught more than just test answers, they are taught real life character building skills. As a parent, I appreciate and value their ideology on teaching the whole person. Students learn to manage their emotions, talk about their learning, explore the world on a deeper level and become a great community of learners. SOAR is the future of education.

My children attend Soar and lets just say that this will be the last year for them. Trust me, this school is a joke. Teaches are their for the first year and they are headed out the door.. They are very mean to the students and each year more and more changes are introduced. Not to mention the school has received a "F". Do not let the name fool you "SOAR"..This school is a joke.I cannot wait until I find something better; which I am actively seeking. Do not waste you or your childs time here. !

My three children attend Soar and I have been satisfied with the academics taught here. This is the third year my children have been enrolled. I love that the teachers are around the students at all times. All of my children have grown at least 5-9 levels in reading and are very conscious on what they eat. They understand how to read labels on their food and understand why too much sodium is unhealthy. The oldest is in second grade! The teachers are wonderful and return emails within two hours. I have never had a problem that has not been resolved immediately.

I wish that I had read these reviews much sooner. My eldest child has been at SOAR for three years now. He has been bullied, and now ostracized by his entire class. My son now is a complete loner, and withdraws in the class room because one child constantly bullies him, and causes the other children to make fun of him. I should have removed my children from this school two years ago, when I learned just how wrong they were. The signs may look nice, the grass freshly cut, but what goes on in that school is a reflection of their scores, which are not that great. Every year they replace teachers, because they hired the wrong ones to begin with, and then they hire more "baby" teachers who just want the teaching experience for their resume, and then want to move on. My other son's entire kinder class had to seek tutors. I had hoped so much more from the people who started the FLI in New York, but it's obvious that their statistics had to have been grossly over exaggerated, or flat out blasphemy. This will most definitely be the last year my child will attend this school. Lesson learned: New school, new grounds, and new facility, doesn't always equal best education. Stick to the basics.

I give them nothing.. the decisions they make in this school are never based on what oir kids need. They try to force tgeir thoughts beliefs and way of life on your kids. Bullying isnt even the right word these kids who should be kids are the most vicious angry violent people I know. The schools approch put em in the office for half the day send them back to class. Irritating my child sure cant do your basic math and reading skills but she can tell you why sugar is bad for you and fight for you to eat meat because her teacher said its fatty. None the less if you want a voice or child set up for success stay away. This school is a crock.

This school is beautiful on the outside and corrupted on the inside. It was a total disappointment. My son learned absolutely nothing and was able to keep his head down more than half of the day. The staff and faculty were horrible constantly isolating and targeting him. The bullying is horrible and nothing is done. This is the worst school we have ever encountered. Parent please check into this school before placing your child here. Not only is my child behind educationally at his current school his self esteem was ripped.

I am shocked that Soar does not have an anti-bully policy. They do not offer any support to the victim. Also Soar does not teach spelling. How is this allowed?

This rating is for Soar @ Oakland. This school is unorganized! The children are disobedient and lack any ambition to learn. I was told from one of the paraprofessionals there that the entire kindergarten was paired up into couples. If you want you child to learn, don't send them here.

Great school! Non traditional teaching methods that push the kids to excel. An all vegetarian menu that makes eating healthy and fun and suprisingly very tasty. This is SOARs 2nd year running and as a parent of a 2nd grader I am beyond pleased. Great addition to the community. You will be hearing great things about this school and the students in years to come.
