I would not enroll my student at this school. I have seen 5th graders literally beating other 5th graders while the staff does nothing. Parents are always getting in to fist fights with staff and other parents. This is not a safe school for you or your child.

My kid used to come here for 3 yrs. And she got bullied with the same kid for 3 years. She always crying after school because she was bullied with the same person, talked to the principal about it and she didnt take no action! Very unprofessional too, every time she see me she got that dirty look. Breaks my heart that my kid didnt want to leave the school because she has her best friend there; but I think its time for us to get the hell out of this school. Her teachers are GREAT btw! But the Principal is very unprofessional!

Send your kids here if you hate them this school will only cares about the teachers, I heard about a kid attempting in the school bathroom the kids avoid school counselors because all the school counselors do is tell the parents like it was the parents hating the kids and, one time I ate the chicken nuggets and it was uncooked, And coming from someone who was here them don't take action for when the spanish speaking classes start fights and blame the kids English-speaking kids for it and some how provoking it, I remember sitting at lunch and some boys from the Spanish speaking class started a fight with the other class and it was the English-speaking class that stop the fight before the teachers did.

I was sad to see this school has such poor reviews. I am a parent who choiced into McMeen for their Dual Language program. Let me start with, no school is perfect, but how they deal with their imperfections is everything. As a family, we were looking for an educational environment that celebrated diversity, taught how to be a global citizen and gave my child the gift of language. I think many of these reviews have been prior to the current administration. We came in around the same time as the new Principal and VP. They encourage community involvement, encourage parental involvement and strive to break down barriers. I have had 2 personal experiences, where when things were not going as well as I had hoped, I called and had an immediate response. In a time when our student population was increasing rapidly, they took the time to spend an hour on the phone explaining the situation, empowering me to help support the school and teachers, as well as come up with a personalized plan for my child to succeed. I believe the teachers here have a very tough job as we have so many students who are new to country. They are battling DPS' ever increasing class sizes, while trying to support kiddos with high learning curves as well as those already at the top of the learning curve. I strongly believe if any parent has a concern about their child's learning, the doors are open for communication and the staff is willing to work on a plan to help improve that student's success. Over the last 4 years, I have seen this school move from a goal of just improving test scores, to a school who cares about the individual student's personal growth in all avenues. They are providing opportunities for involvement in after school activities from exploration camps, theater productions, talent shows, sports teams, multicultural events, art and music events and soon will be offering a science fair. They have done this while also being sure our new to country students have immunizations, winter clothes, meals and housing. Yes, there have been moments I have wondered if McMeen is the most robust school for my child, but then I remember all the opportunities given that I can't teach, the care and support of the staff and as well as the amazing families who have supported our family along this journey. This school deserves more than a 3/10!

This school is amazing! I have two kiddos here one main stream and the other with social/emotional issues. The behavior support team is out of this world. They are always ready to support the teachers and give children needed breaks or whatever is written in their 504/IEP . The school academically is wanting every student to have a whole child education. They have so many supports for students.extra reading teachers, counselors, social workers. They break kids into groups so the attention they need can be given whether that is gifted, on grade level, or below. They really focus on the individual childs needs. I cannot say enough.

This school showed no respect for my childs illness. As if I just made it up. Even after speaking with the principal they were unwilling to work with him, his teacher wouldnt even return my phone call. Dps has been terrible but this school was the worst. He was hospitalized prior to his 504 plan being official and finally started getting better treatment I was excited to speak to the school concerning a new plan for him but they refused to even work with me. Before I could finish my sentence the principal interrupted me and said she isnt willing to work with me. Maybe if he wasnt a little black boy they would have cared. Even tho the principal is black means nothing when your child isnt getting the same treatment. Luckily he goes to a diverse school now, and they truly care about his education.

My son is in his first year at McMeen and we can't stand the school. They tell you one thing and then the exact opposite is what occurs. Our first 2 years of preschool were at Bradley International and we loved it there, but we are out of district for them and McMeen is our home school. You can tell that some of the teachers are just done with it and over it as they put forth little effort with the kids because they are overworked and underpaid. They do little to assist the kids with Bullies. They "talk" to the other child and nothing ever changes. Trying to get answers from anyone in the school is like pulling teeth.

They seem to do a good job of teaching the kids how to deal with bullying and they address incidents in a way that teaches the kids to respect each other.

Overall, we have been happy with the teachers at McMeen, but we just have noticed that when our child started in kindergarten and through first grade, the teachers communicated with the parents a lot, which contributed to our feeling connected with the school and our child's classroom. Now, we hardly hear from the teachers and don't really know what's happening in our child's class, other than what we can wrestle out of our kid. But our child has definitely loved all of the teachers.

We recently had a misunderstanding about how the awards program at the school was changing. Although it would have been great if the school had communicated these changes to us earlier and in a way that made the standards clear, I appreciated that the principal responded to our concerns and we were able to get a better understanding of the new standards the school has implemented.

We were a little worried about how much homework our child had in kindergarten, but it has become lighter and more flexible since then. The flexibility is good because parents' ability to help their kids with homework on a nightly basis varies so much from one family to the next, and sometimes things come up that make flexibility a necessity. Right now our second grader takes home a monthly homework sheet that requires the children to complete 10 of several suggested assignments, which seems age-appropriate and flexible.

We are very happy with McMeen! With each opportunity we get to spend at the school, it always feels like home and we love the community. We love the diversity of McMeen and appreciate this opportunity for our child to interact and play with kids from all walks of life and from different parts of the world. We believe these interactions will be so beneficial for building character and building the foundation for social interactions and equality for years to come. We've been happy with the handling of homework in kindergarten. Homework is given as an opportunity to solidify concepts learned in the classroom. Turning in homework is not mandatory, but its graded and given back if it is. This has given our child a good preview of homework and what will be required through the progression through school.

McMeen emphasizes their core principles of academic achievement, respect, compassion, responsibility and perseverance in a way that is embodied by its students. Students are actively recognized for their positive behavior and demonstration of these principles which seems to create a positive and collaborative environment within the school.

The leadership team at McMeen works very hard for the benefit of their students. We appreciate the communication that we receive from the school and the consideration given to parental questions and input. The emphasis is on reading every day. My 1st grader receives a weekly packet that includes a daily reading log and some review math work that he is able to complete independently. The homework has helped him to practice responsibility and independence.

Although my son and daughter attended private pre-school and kindergarten, they both started McMeen below grade level in reading. I was so impressed at the quick response from their teachers. My son was immediately put into intervention and showed improvement right away. By winter break, he was reading at grade level. My daughter (kindergarten) has grown tremendously and is now above grade level in reading. My son has also shown a strength in math, and his teacher put him into an accelerated math group each week where he receives extension to keep him growing in an area where he is already strong.

I have been very impressed at the response from administration when we have had questions or concerns. The PTLT/PTO meetings are well run and active. I love feeling like I am a part of the school, even though it is hard for me to volunteer at the school during the day, because of work. Mr. Adams knows my kids' names and knows my name, and that adds to a sense of community within the school.

Both of my students started McMeen further behind in reading than I would have liked, but the school response has been tremendous and effective. Both are reading at or above grade level and continue to have a love of reading!

My kids have not had any issues with bullying, but when there have been incidents of misbehavior, my kids report that they are dealt with quickly. My kids feel safe at school and love being there!

We love McMeen! My husband and I have looked forward to supporting our neighborhood school since our kids were little, and we continue to be happy with that choice. We love the diversity and appreciation for difference, which will greatly benefit our kids as they grow. We feel like any concerns that we have had have been addressed. We recently attended McMeen's school dance, organized by the Playworks coach, and we were so impressed at the turn out! It was such a fun event and really made us proud and excited to be part of the McMeen community.

This is developed in so many ways at McMeen. From monthly super citizens to writing prompts on character strengths to "caught in the act" (of doing something above and beyond). I think this an area McMeen really excels. It's woven into the fabric of their community and as I parent I couldn't be happier.

We love our neighborhood school. I am constantly amazed by the professionalism, skill level, and collaboration I see among teachers. We have three kids at McMeen and have never considered going anywhere else. We truly feel lucky to to be a part of such an amazing community.

Awesome! It is amazing that McMeen is a traditional neighborhood school given all the diversity, creativity and parent buy in. Teachers at this school are innovative and excited about teaching children. The afterschool program, McMeen University, expands choices every year and offers enrichment in many different areas for a very low cost. The staff at McMeen are supportive to families and flexible with working parents often staying late for conferences etc. My kids have been challenged each day they have been there and have been reading at least two grade levels ahead due to the rigorous instruction. A wonderful community heavy with respect and accountability as well as a first class learning experience.

My children have been going her for 4 and 5 years respectively. Each of them have had wonderful teachers that meet the needs of students in their class despite many children learning on different levels and with different speed. They are creative in finding ways to challenge kids.

My family moved here from Minnesota 3 years ago, and both of my daughters attended McMeen. I have 1 still in school there and the other is now in middle school, but they made our transition very easy. Their upcoming teachers came to our house to visit with them over the summer, which was absolutely awesome. I am very glad we were in this school district.

The principal and vice-principal and support staff that I come in contact with are down-to-earth and personal. My perception is that they work very closely together and they are very open to working with and listening to parent concerns. I am very happy with the leadership team. In fact, I think this is the best leadership team for the school during the time my child has been at the school.

They work hard to teach children skills they need to prevent bullying and to effectively deal with bullying. The children at this school are learning to be diversity leaders and anti-bullying activists. The school rewards students who demonstrate anti-bullying leadership skills and students understand the value of the restorative justice program at the school. The leadership team, the IEP team, the restorative justice program, the teachers, the volunteers, the parent community and the students do not tolerate bullying at this school. The Restorative Justice Program has been an innovative addition to reinforce positive character traits and prevent bullying alongside the IEP team and leadership team! I can't express my gratitude enough!

My child has been at this school for 4 years now. The amount of homework given is quite reasonable for each grade level. In fact, it usually consists of 30 min of reading, a short writing assignment based on the reading, and one quarter of a worksheet of math that takes my child 5 - 10 minutes to complete. It reasonable to expect a good teacher to give homework to help parents see the kind of knowledge and skills the kids are demonstrating in the classroom. Homework is a good way for kids and parents to work together and reinforce knowledge and skills in the classroom. In my child's class there is 4 days of homework a week when the class meets 5 days. If the kids are only in school has a short week because of a teacher meeting or planning day, kids would have only 3 days of homework. I have my child complete the homework earlier in the week so it works very well for us.

I love my child's teacher this year. She is smart, kind and dedicated to the teaching and learning process of each unique student in her class. Now that my child has been at the school for almost 4 years, I can see how the subsequent levels of learning and organization of course content in K - 2 helped my child develop up to this stage. I am grateful to see that how supportive the principal is of the teachers. The teachers in each grade in work as a team developing curriculum and learning materials. The teachers are happy at this school and they care so deeply about needs of each child. I can feel the love of the community each day I drop my child off for school. Teachers at this school have excellent training and are truly good people. I appreciate the balance of nurturance and challenge they provide for my child. My friends who have children in the school tell me they really like their children's teachers.

This school rewards students when they show compassion, respect, responsibility, perseverance and academic achievement. Children receive caught in the act awards each day and students are acknowledged when they demonstrate this traits during morning announcements in week. In addition, students are rewarded for encouraging their peers to succeed which creates a culture of cooperation, optimism and compassion within the community. Students feel valued and proud and they know they have the ability to demonstrate strong characters and grow from mistakes. I think the school does a great job with promoting positive character traits. The family-community-network is helping our students grow and succeed in so many ways.

My daughter is in the third grade and she has had a great year. Her teacher is young and smart and so good with the children and also the parents. I can't say enough good things about how hard these teachers work for our kids. We all love it because it's special.

Mcmeen is a great school ! truly a second home/family , very diverse, yet very harmonious , teachers are very well qualified and they make sure your kid grow academically , i wish they have more programs dedicated for gifted kids though , keep going Mcmeen staff , you are the best and we can't thank you enough!!

McMeen is an awesome school. The leadership is very proactive in avoiding behavior problems in the students. I sub in many DPS schools and this is the quietest yet happiest school I go to in any given week. The diversity is unmatched at other area schools and this adds to every child's educational experience.

All change starts with-in, and that is true at McMeen. Mr. Volek, the school principal, has created a school culture of open communication, kindness, and high educational standards. We came into the public school system from a small private school and had some growing pains to start, but are very happy with how the school handled all of our concerns quickly and thoughtfully. I do wish they had an accelerated program, but our teacher has been great at providing more challenging work for us to do at home. The school is highly diverse which will give my boys lessons in culture and acceptance that they could never get from a book. We have been very happy with our experience at McMeen.

They usually works many extra hours, they support my kids a lot, and my kids are very happy and they are learning many new stuff. Thanks for your effort! This is the most horrible school year ever. 1st they lost my son for 45 minutes. When I called DPS they never called me back. I am still waiting and it has been almost 3 months. 2nd the teacher told him to put water on hives after being exposed to peanuts, my child is allergic. Then they fed him rotten pears and he threw up 3 times when I asked them what happen after I confirmed with the nurse why he threw up the principle assured me that he didn't get any rotten fruit. Advised he could have gotten a stomach virus. I kept him out of school for a day just in case he did have something outside of bad fruit and he never showed any signs of a stomach virus in fact he ate and ate and ate the entire day and never once got sick. I have called DPS 3 times, I asked them to change his teacher and when I pull him out of the school now they are concerned and want to transfer him to Ellis another school that is run down. McMeen was on the excellence list last year and Ellis wasn't . I am choosing an online program for his education. If I change his school give me the option to pick what school I want my son in. My son has been in the nurses office more times this year than last year
