My daughter who has trouble learning was pulled out of class and tutored. They were so inclusive and met my and my child's needs. The teachers were so responsive and nice to everyone 10/10 best school I have seen.

Agree with the previous reviewer. Detentions galore, if your kiddo isn't GT they aren't seen. Very exclusionary to the kids who are. Teachers do nothing about bullying. Very bad experience.

I am a student at Morey, and it is awesome. Not only are all the classes really interesting, they have a great HGT program and help challenge students really well. One of the most used acronyms there is SUCCESS, with each letter being a totally different but important part of learning. All the students are very excited about learning and most of them are super nice. And the test scores are one of the best in the state! Overall, I would recommend this school to anyone interested in a great learning experience in Denver.

Our son has thrived here, in part because of the excellent teachers, but equally because of the social/emotional support. Morey deeply understands the complexity of HGT kids, and prioritizes their well-being with its Success Seminars, especially through the meditation and anti-racism curriculum. Our son has multiple teachers and administrators he genuinely trusts and sees as role models. This is in part due to the small size of the school; yes, there are fewer options for activities and clubs, but for us the benefits have outweighed those negatives. A new principal will be starting soon, and I hope that person will continue all that has made the school great.

My daughter, who is now in 7th, transitioned to Morey mid-year a month prior to COVID lockdown. Once school picked back up again she has been super active, taking basketball, volleyball, soccer, student council..all the things.

She LOVES this school, her friends, the teachers.

The teachers are bright, energetic and super engaged. She has thrived and I couldn't be happier with our decision to send her to Morey.

My daughter started out at DSST Byers..which simply was not a fit for her. However, while at Byers she tested highly gifted and was welcomed into Morey a month prior to Covid lockdown. That year was a difficult one but the school maintained a high degree of engagement with the students. Now that in-person has resumed she has been THRIVING. She is in student council, played basketball, volleyball, soccer. She LOVES her teachers who I have found to be very communicative and available.

Not all of her classes are for gifted, some a are "traditional". I was a little uneasy about her integrating with the general population at Morey because there has historically been a huge performance/testing differential between traditional and gifted kids. Because she has been home I have had the benefit of listing into the different classes and I have to say - I can't really tell the difference between how engaged the kids are, the energy of the teachers, the content of the two-class types, I have been equally impressed by both formats from Morey.

She is white and we did give her the option to apply to private schools and she said, "I don't want to go to school with a lot of white privileged kids." She chose diversity. And I think that the diversity that Morey has is a real gift. She has been invited to birthday parties and playdates across the ethnic and socioeconomic spectrum and has developed deep compassion and understanding for people from different backgrounds.

The biggest challenge we have had is that she wants to get to school 20 minutes early every day so she can see her friends which really interferes with our other child's dropoff!

I couldn't be happier with this school. And nor could she.

I have been repeatedly impressed with this school. The teachers are energetic and dedicated and sharp. They have taken the time to know my kid and their learning style and that has made a world of difference for their academic and social self esteem.
Administrators are available and reasonable. I had heard about bullying prior to sending our kid there and after two years we have had no negative experiences related to other kids.

Because I have anxiety as well as a lot of my friends and they make adjustments to make it comfortable for us like letting us talk to the counselors to find solutions or giving us head phones so that we can focus better or giving kids with ADHD more time on tests.

Five out of five stars. It has been amazing. The teachers are so nice and understanding and can give you more time on an assignment or an extension so that you can do your best work and so that people that deal with anxiety, (such as me) can stress less about it.

The high staff turnover and dropping enrollment numbers (735 in 2011-12 to 293 this school year and lower for the fall) speak to the problems that plague Morey MS. Although the only Highly Gifted & Talented middle school magnet program for DPS is at Morey, the 6th grade HGT class this year is only a third of the 8th grade numbers, about 35 students, all in one class. We transferred our 6th grader out before the end of the school year (and would have done the same with our 8th grader but she was insistent on staying through the end of the year) due to discipline issues as a whole and the lack of strong academics. After a year and a half at Morey we were disappointed in the lack of clear direction and the leadership at the school. Changes are put in place by the administration without community discussion and promises and assurances are made by staff and the principal that are never followed through on, some of which are required by law (they have an investigation by the Office of Civil Rights pending). Communication is poor and we rarely saw any of our children's school work, yet we were expected to support them. Most teachers do not respond to e-mails and we spent too much time tracking them down to get information. Although they have a large number of staff they don't seem to be able to get this school back on track. I would not recommend this school with it's current direction and leadership to anyone.

We have been very pleased with Morey even though there have been some ups and downs with all the transition the past few years. Our daughter is finishing up her 8th grade year in the HGT program. Our son will be there next year in the HGT program in 6th grade. My daughter found her niche and had a good group of friends. Bullying has not been an issue overall. There are lots of great opportunities at Morey given the urban setting. Last year our daughter was involved in the Anthropology Club. They got to work weekly at the Colorado History Museum creating and developing their very own Morey exhibit complete with a ceremony when it was complete. The exploratory arts offer incredible chances to learn new skills. Definitely have your kids enroll in band and/or orchestra even if they have never picked up an instrument. Art is another amazing option. There have definitely been lots of transitions, but we are excited and hopeful with Mr. Tonk now serving as principal. He is definitely committed to growing the school in many ways and serving all the students that attend. You could tell the teachers were excited about Mr. Tonk when we attended back to school night this past fall.

My son has attended Morey Middle School for three years now and we have been very pleased with the experience. While there have been a number of changes in school leadership over the years that have been challenging, the current principal has done an excellent job of getting things back on track. Despite being the biracial son of two dads he has NEVER experienced bullying during his 2 1/2 years at Morey. We've heard reports of it, but have never experienced it first hand. If there were issues, I know they have been addressed. Morey offers our son a wide variety of exploratory programs that he has very much enjoyed such as band, Spanish, and woodshop. He has also excelled in all the fundamental courses as well. If you want to send your kid to a school where they will be sheltered from the real world and only be exposed to a narrow demographic and cultural environment, send them to a private or charter school. However, if you want your kid to be prepared for the real world and understand that there are many cultures and socio-economic that we must learn to co-exist with, then please consider Morey. You won't regret it!

I have a 6th grader and an 8th grader at Morey. The band program is outstanding. Academically my kids have had lots of opportunity to think creatively. I like the friends they've made here. My son will be going to East next year and I don't think any other school would have prepared him as well. The new principal is terrific. He has vision and is serious about discipline.

My son started in 6th grade this year @ Morey, and has loved it from the start. His teachers are excellent and very responsive to any concerns I've had. The principal, Noah Tonk, is the most committed & passionate principal I have ever seen. We are proud to support our neighborhood school.

My son started 6th grade at Morey this fall in the HGT program. I was a little nervous, because I'd heard some mixed reviews, and we were committing to send him to a school that's a 20 minute drive from our house. After visiting Morey, though, he was insistent that this was the school for him, so we agreed. We are so happy with his experience so far. His teachers are kind, supportive and fun. He feels more challenged in his academics than he had all through elementary school. He ended up in Orchestra through a scheduling fluke, and by the end of the second day had decided he loved it, and wanted to be a Bass player. I cannot say enough good things about the music teacher at Morey! The new principal this year is honest, direct and dedicated. He is upfront about the challenges that Morey is facing and never tries to sugar coat them - but he also is relentless in problem solving and truly values the input of parents, and from what I've seen, his staff. Middle school is a tumultuous time in any kids life, but I feel like my child is safe, academically challenged, and being exposed to a diverse range of people. I am so glad we let him go with his gut and choose Morey!

Morey's principal is a great leader and is making great changes within the school. Morey has teachers that are amazing - some of the best in DPS. Morey offers academic rigor to all students with Honors classes and the only HGT Magnet for middle school. If you are looking for a school that develops the Whole Child - Morey is the place. Morey offers students the ability to explore their passions, through exploratory arts classes, Enrichment classes and intersession programs. Morey has the best after school program in Middle School - Morey's Neighborhood Center. And don't forget the Mighty Mustangs! Morey continues to be a dominant force in Middle School Athletics! My very petit 6th grade son has loved every day he has spent at Morey and has always felt safe going to school. He tells me that not only has he never felt bullied, but that he has not seen any bullying or fights at school. He has consistently been given interesting, interdisciplinary assignments and loves the after school clubs. The most surprising thing about Morey for us, however,has been how caring the teachers are - taking an interest in students extracurricular activities similar to the type of interest we were used to in Elementary school, even though each teacher has at least 4-5 times the number of students that grade school teachers have. I cannot imagine him having a better middle school experience anywhere.

Morey has a collegial, invested-in-learning staff. We were one of the first schools to adopt a teacher collaboration schedule, and unlike other schools, embraced opening our classrooms and learning from one another. Morey's population reflects the diversity of the city giving students an opportunity to learn from peers whose lives, at the end of the day, are different from their own. I've had many parents tell me Morey prepared their children for the diversity of high school. Besides a quick drop and subsequent rise, Morey has consistently been on the top of the charts in test scores. (A parent who says the school is "on watch" from the Dept. of Ed misinterprets DPS's two-year system for color-coding schools). Morey connects with the community and world. We boast school-led student groups volunteering at plethora of non-profits; parent collaborations with influential state leaders; yearly expeditionary learning trips to San Diego, NYC, Washington DC, 303 Boards, Kronke Sports, and this year Peru. As a former high school teacher, I think Morey prepares students for high school better than most parents, teachers, and students could hope for.

I went to Morey Middle school last year and I hated it, there was a BIG bullying problem, teachers couldn't teach because they had to get the class to be silent and when they were teaching they would be interupted by students. Parents, do NOT let your student(s) go to Morey unless you want them to be tramutized for a year and most likely get bad anxiety.

******PLEASE CONSIDER OTHER OPTIONS BEFORE SENDING YOUR CHILD TO THIS SCHOOL***** Our 8th grade HGT child is bored & uninspired at Morey. We will not be sending our HGT elementary school child to this school next year. It is a shame that this is the only middle school option for HGT kids in Denver Public Schools. Our child reports that there is constant disruption in classes; teachers seem bored & uninterested in the students, homework is rare; English class has assigned only one book this year so far & it was a typical 6th grade summer reading book & the students had to read along to an audio book during class! [Such a joke...these are HGT students.] There is also zero feedback or contact from our child's advisor. High turnover among teachers and administrators as well. The school is "on watch" by the Dept of Ed due to it's consistent failure as an educational institution for the past several years. This school and the HGT program need a complete overhaul. It is currently a huge disappointment for so many of us parents. It is such a shame especially considering the amount of brainpower being wasted there!

This place you call Morey isnt a school, it's more of a place you go to wast your day. This school is truly going down hill. My 6th grade year at the school was a thriving learning facility. By my 8th grade year the school is failing and hanging by a thread. Most teachers have absolutely no control what's so ever of the chaotic classes. The hgt program is practically a joke to recruit new students. This school punishes good students for things that shouldn't mean anything, and don't do anything to defiant students once they break the law.

My school is considerably a bad one. If a good kid does something, he is in big trouble. If a bad kid does something, the teacher is afraid to even stand up to him, annoying. The kids can just walk up and turn down the teacher and the teacher would give them what they want. The teachers have no control it feels like, the homework seems to just be what the teachers fail to do in class, which is a lot. On assignments that need more teaching, the do less. With assignments that need less, they do more. Waste of time. Bullying is everywhere, I've been bullied here often. Chanted gay, etc. Do the teachers help, at all, no. Disappointing to say i regret being here in my third year. Hgt feels no different than other schools just worse at teaching, i wish i could say i feel safe.

I am in 7th grade and go to Morey. It is a great school and I learn a lot educationally and a lot about other people and how they have different lives at home. Most of the teachers are great, others not as much but they are all pretty good. I have learned a lot in the HGT program, but not as much in High Strides. I have never seen bullying. Despite what parents say, Morey is a great school and does not have bullying. Morey's extracurricular activities are exciting and fun! The sports and mathletics teams are some of the best in the city. Go Mustangs!

If I could give this school a 0 rating it would still be too good. The bullying is too much. The teachers are the worst ever. They don't care whether a student does well or not, they only want them out of their hair. My son wanted extra help with a project he didn't understand and was told to figure it out himself. The principal at Morey cares even less. The bullying, when brought to her attention, is belittled as though it is the persons fault who is being bullied. Some of the teachers have little or no control over their classrooms. When I visited Morey to see how my son was doing, his classroom was in complete chaos. If there is any other choice of school for your child I suggest you take it. Morey is no place for learning.

This is the worst school I have ever seen. All the teachers and staff turn a blind eye to bullying. The bully's get rewarded and congratulated while the kids being bullied get reprimanded. I had to go to school and throw a fit because 1 teacher was taking my son off campus without our permission. They didn't even do anything to that teacher but they made my son feel horrible for telling me. The principal knows that all of this is going on and doesn't seem to care. My son has also gotten beat up 3 times this year and the bully is still in school tormenting kids. Morey is the worst school you could ever send your child to if you want them to succeed. It is worth it to drive them to a different school.

Hey i go to morey middle school in the 7th grade. I am in the hgt program and until morey i truly could not like any subjects, but now i excel at about everything the school has brought me to yet still brings me new things to learn, i honestly found the coolest things thanks to the caring and friendly teachers and awwweeeesoommme people you meet. My daughter transferred here from another DPS school for her 8th grade year. So far, not only has she excelled in her grades, and has made a lot of new friends, but the teachers have also had a very active role in making sure she is comfortable in her new surroundings. She went from receiving Ds consistently in math at her previous middle school, to participating in mathletics and comprehending math. My only regret is that I didn't transfer her to this school sooner. It has really seemed to open educational doors for her.

Take a look at CDE's math growth results for Morey 2013. Some bar graph claims Morey achieved 'expected growth'/green in 2013. Now, look at the math TCAP scores for Morey 2012 7th graders: 35% Not Proficient. Same kids in 2013 8th graders: 47% Not Proficient. 47% of the school are socioeconomically disadvantaged. How is the Core Curriculum working for this school? Compare that to a nearby school (Hill Campus) whose socioeconomic disadvantaged population was 55% last year. They're slightly down/ steady or BETTER depending on the grade.

I deeply regret sending my daughter to this school. I thought an HGT program would provide her the challenge she needed. So far, it has been easier than her elementary school. The teachers and administrators are reluctant to advance students to the level they desire. No wonder 20% of high school dropouts are gifted.

My school is morey middle. I was a student there for a year, and it was terrible. The teachers are irresponsible, most of the kids are bullies, and the education is at sometimes low grade. I had an experience where a teacher graded most of my report card wrong, and I ended up doing tons of extra work. Morey isnt the worst school you can go to, but it definitely is not the best. I wish i would have known all of this before i went there. Thank you for reading this.

This is quite possibly the worst school I have ever been exposed to. I would HIGHLY recommend you do not send your child here. Bullying is rampant and the faculty does nothing about it. My son has been verbally and physically harassed for the entire year, and no matter how many times I go to the teachers and faculty, it will change for a week and go right back to it. The school is very segregated as well, and the social climate is hostile. I believe the funding and lack of quality faculty has caused this school to be out of control and they don't really have the resources to change anytime soon. Thankfully my son got into a charter school next year, otherwise we would be doing ANYTHING to make sure he wasn't going back here.

My child is wrapping up 8th grade in Morey HGT, then going to East for high school. Recently, an assessment test was administered for math skill, in order to correctly place the students in an appropriate math class. Sure, makes sense, right? Except this was done because East had problems with students from Morey in the last few years being placed automatically in the next level of math if they were passing, only to find out that the accelerated kids WERE NOT READY! I trusted them with my child for 3 years, and thought that passing was passing. If I had known this he would have gone to a different school. BTW I believe this is not the teacher's fault, I think they were playing to the CSAP rather than making sure the kids were prepared for high school. Mr. Brown is a great teacher.
