In addition to the unique dual language immersion (DLI) program, we love the community our family has found at DCIS. I highly recommend this school to other families, even if it's a way's away from home. The teacher and staff truly care and work hard to build a trusted community for our kids.

We chose DCIS at Fairmont for three reasons: 1. Spanish language immersion, 2. social justice curriculum, and 3. a truly diverse student population. My 2nd grader speaks fluent Spanish, my preschooler came home telling us about Cesar Chavez, and our kids friends come from all different walks of life. This is a great school and only wish there were more like it!

We spent a lot of time touring schools and thinking about what would be best for our kiddo. Included in that thought process was reading the reviews from sites like this one, so I feel compelled to write this review in case it helps out others who might be in the same boat. DCIS has been such a wonderful experience for our family so far. While it admittedly wasn't our first choice for school choice (because we heavily considered CMAS scores in our decision making), I keep thinking of that quote "Sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck."
Our kiddo is enrolled in the dual language program and it has been fantastic so far. Our teacher is engaged, joyful, and truly cares about the class--with thoughtful, individualized strategies to meet each child's unique needs. We love the smaller class size and that each Kinder classroom has its own para. And we love the focus on movement, music, and learning through play in the classroom. Our kiddo LOVES going to school each morning because it is "fun," and honestly at this age, loving school feels like a top priority for evaluating the success of a school.
The school has a no homework policy and encourages that you spend time reading to your child each night (this is not unlike many other DPS schools we toured). Everyone our kiddo has interacted with so far (from the paraprofessionals to the specials teachers--gym, art, and music) has been kind and supportive. When we toured, we were impressed at the true multicultural representation throughout the school--not just in the teaching staff, but also it was the only school where diversity (including the art work) didn't feel tokenized.
If you're like me, you might be focusing on the CMAS scores of the schools your considering. Here are a few things that helped balance that out for us: the school is in the process of moving up a "color" in the UIP framework because the K-2 READ Act scores were well above the state averages. I'd expect to see higher CMAS scores this year. Additionally, with dual language programs, there will be some lag in CMAS testing scores (and then exponential growth come middle school). There has also been a shift in school leadership; the new principal comes from another high-performing dual immersion school in DPS and has created team leaders to support data driven instruction.
I'd definitely recommend touring DCIS and feeling a feel for yourself, especially if dual language is important to you!

The teachers are engaged and work hard at providing a postivie learning experience for their students. I feel very comfortable dropping him at school every morning knowing that he will be well cared for.

We have been so happy with DCIS Fairmont. During our first school choice cycle it wasnt really on my radar I went to the school tour just because the school was nearby. They brought 4th and 5th graders in to take questions from parents and the way these incredibly impressive, articulate children described the school (wherever you go in this school there will be teachers or students who want to help you!) just blew me away. I immediately crossed every other school off our list. Years later, Im so happy that I did. Teachers, staff, and parents who care. The dual language program has been wonderful (our kid actually speaks and understands Spanish just out and about). Families come in from all over the city and there is a much higher proportion of G&T students here (of all ethnicities) than most other schools, according to the G&T teacher. This is also a community that cares about all children, not only wealthy white kids. I couldnt recommend the school more!!

DCIS at Fairmont is a wonderful school that truly supports kids a humans- not just in their academics. They acknowledge systemic biases and actively work to understand their roll in those systems in order to break from it. The admin and teachers there are amazing.

We transferred from another DPS elementary school in our neighborhood to DCIS Fairmont last year and could not be happier. The teachers are wonderful, supportive and connected to their students. We put our 1st grader in the Spanish immersion program and she was provided with extra support because she came into the program late - she has thrived! The principal is wonderful and hardworking. She seems to knows all of the kids by name and we often see her at drop off, helping with whatever is needed including shoveling the drop off lane!! We love the community we have found here. The focus on global learning and perspective is felt and our kids love going to school everyday.

The teachers and staff treat each student as an individual and help them cultivate a strong sense of community with their peers. Our kiddo is thriving in the Spanish Immersion program.

This is the best school community I have been a part of. I am on the School Advisory Committee and see the ins and outs of the decisions made at the school. This school tries very hard to make all families and students feel welcome, included, and cared for. They have focused on the whole child for a long time and even received an award for it. They are constantly reflecting, asking for community input, they are aware of the ways they need to improve and are making every effort to do soimplementing new research based curriculums in reading and math, training teachers better, maintaining heavy emphasis on equity, social emotional learning, and international studies. Overall a family feel where kids are cared for and about deeply.

We have been very happy with our sons experience as a preschooler in the full-day ECE-4 dual language immersion classroom at DCIS Fairmont this year. His teachers are so caring and committed to the kids. The staff and leadership are accessible, honest and thoughtful. Weve seen great growth in both his Spanish language and general reading and math skills. The school values and embraces diversity of all kinds and that is reflected in the students and the staff. The heart of that school is tremendous and we are looking forward to his continued growth as a kindergartener.

Fairmont felt right from the start in ECE3. The teachers are wonderful and so attentive to our childs specific needs. Our kid is in kindergarten and its been incredible to see how far she and her classmates have come in learning Spanish in the dual language program. We also love the specials offered, a fun music program, art, physical education and STEM. Lots of focus on self care and mindfulness, inclusivity and being a world citizen. Our youngest will also be attending in September. I cant say enough good things about this school!

The leadership at DCIS at Fairmont is solid and this school has truly cultivated such an incredible community. The forward-thinking, globally-minded, inclusive culture here is invaluable and exemplifies the values we strive to raise our kids with. Our family has also loved the language immersion program so much and we have been impressed with the speed at which our kids have picked it up! Most importantly, we have found this to be the absolute best place to get the support we need for our special needs kids. We have felt welcomed and supported on every level - from the classroom teachers to the sped team to the admin team, which is a lot more than I can say for the previous school we transferred in from. I cannot recommend DCIS enough.

I was recommended this school from a family who had children enrolled. My son started in ECE-4 during the 2020-2021 school year. I was completely blown away by the amount of education he was coming home with, even while doing some schooling remote. The depth of the information was also way beyond what I thought he was capable of, yet here he was learning about the world and its entirety. His teacher showed patience and love every single day, no matter the obstacles she was facing as a teacher during a pandemic. This year I am equally as impressed. His teacher has already given him the tools to begin to read and his desire and love for school shines through. It is 100% due to this school. Every teacher and staff member I have spoken to in passing or otherwise has such a passion for what they do. Everyone has been so kind and it really is a community I am proud we are apart of. My son also receives speech therapy and has made strides with Ms. Betsy. Its incredible. I am so grateful for this school. Its a hidden gem in the heart of Denver.

I am an educator and a parent. I did my research and was very intentional about where I chose to send our son. This school is amazing. The truth is, CDE's school 'report card' system and other such evaluation platforms simply do not capture the health of a school. They do not account for art, cultural initiatives, community engagement or project based learning. They do not capture the value of Spanish language infusion into the classroom or enrichment programming. They do not emphasize the outstanding gift of Discovery Link programming before school starts, after school ends and over the summer in the form of content-rich, FUN camps! (And DCIS at Fairmont offers all of these experiences FOR FREE!) This school has all of this and more. I am in love with the way the faculty at this school shepherds my kiddos through the process of exploring the world, weighing the perspectives of others and taking action. This school teaches altruism, diversity and inclusion. The teachers care. Communication is streamlined and effective. Don't let the public school systems of accountability fool you - there is WAYYYYYY more to learning and growing at school then the subjects the district tests on. Any interested parent should reach out and ask for a tour. You will be glad you did. (Did I mention the school is a historic site and reminds me of a mini Hogwarts??!).

I'm an educator and not easily impressed, and I LOVE this school. My son is thriving there even after all the hardships and loss of the pandemic. He is growing in ways I didn't even think he would grow, eg, artistically and musically, and he is so excited to tell me about his math lessons or what they are learning about with their social emotional skills. He's Black and we came here after leaving another school where he hadn't been treated well, and he is treated like a full, three-dimensional human and not a burden (and as the mom of three Black boys quite far apart in age that has been rare in our experience). Can't say enough good things about the learning and teaching here.

My son just completed his first year at DCIS. He was on the younger side when he started kinder there.
He thrived there, learning to read at almost a third grade level. He also did really well in math and learning on a social environmental level.
I think the teachers there are amazing and the community is strong. There are kinks to work out in administration, however, I think this is true for any school.
We choiced into DCIS in 2018 and were given the opportunity to choice into Lincoln for the 2019/2020 school year.
There are many benefits to both schools, but have chosen to stay with DCIS because of the many rewarding past experiences and I believe the many more to come.

We are very happy with DCIS at Fairmont! Our kiddos have wonderful teachers who make them feel welcome, challenge them, and create a learning environment that is exciting and fun. Both of our children have specific learning styles that require intervention. Their teachers have helped us identify these and modify their experience and instruction to best meet their individual needs. The administration is welcoming, dedicated, and very responsive to collaboration with parents. There is a strong PTA group that is growing and is open to new members and ideas. Art, music, language development, wellness, mindfulness, interpersonal relationship skills, as well as academics are valued and incorporated into daily learning. We love the diversity of the community and the neighborhood. DCIS at Fairmont is a hidden gem and we are grateful to be a part of it!
