My student is thriving at this high school. She is a dedicated student who stays out of trouble. She has enjoyed all the extra curricular activities and has excelled on the crew team. She has a great group of friends as well. The community is highly involved and the school encourages that but also encourages your students independence.

Extremely positive. My student was very prepared academically for a very challenging college. Leadership, sports and community service opportunities were encouraged and provided for those who sought them out. The administration cares about every students and does not give up on them, no matter what their abilities. Hard work is definitely rewarded.

The awarding SHS of one star is due solely to the Football staff. The teaching staff are not only woefully disinterested, but I suspect they honestly do not even like teaching; the Superintendant's and Admission's offices are sadly, a comedy routine that you would not believe exist in reality anywhere; and the guidance department is completely asleep at the switch. All of this, is of course, a dramatic improvement over Mystic Middle School and Deans Mill Elementary.
From the school nurse demanding that my children retake every innoculation shot from birth through eighth grade before being admitted to school (nurse reason given was that all shots were given by MDs outside the state of CT?!?), to no text books--instead just copied off ragged papers occasionally given out, a block schedule sytem in which you never know what class you have when, nor which to prepare for regarding tests, papers, et al., and the school's insistence that your children not attend school for weeks at a time due to their odd admissions issues (this after all paperwork has been completed and all residency proof admitted year after year). Absolutely avoid the Stonington School District at all costs! Even with 4.0 students that overachieve in many areas, this place will ruin them! One positive, however, the football program and staff have been the only positive in an otherwise intentionally destructive school system. there is a very good reason that an enormous number of parents home school in this district. BEWARE!

I would like to point out that the positive reviews are outdated. I would agree, nine years ago when we settled here with a third grader, we were excited about our child's educational future in this district. As leadership has changed, the budget slashed and many other shortcomings, we have found that SHS caters to the AP shining stars. If your child is an average student or below, you are pegged, the guidance department will not go out of their way to help, guide or encourage them. Phone calls are rarely returned. Our child's guidance counselor actually laughed at him when he told her his post-high school plans. He is now convinced he shouldn't bother applying for scholarships or any "dream schools."

Our second child opted for one of the many magnet programs in this area and we have been amazed at the other school's environment. All students are valued, if your child even starts to show signs of slipping, there's an email, a phone call, reaching out. Guidance counselors are extremely involved in each child's success - even if they are not college bound. The principal of this other school is their biggest cheerleader. She is at every event (sporting, chorus, drama, etc). The students are thriving.

SHS lacks the leadership and quality environment to move forward. Changes need to be made. Our third child will not be attending SHS unless major changes occur.

Love Stonington! High school is a nice size where students get a chance to get involved in a variety of academic and extracurricular activities!

I would like to point out how old all the other reviews are on this site.I will preface by stating that four to five years ago the school system was in a very different place than what it is now,and that in 2008 I would have given my school system a higher review but that is no longer the case.I am a recent Stonington High School grad and I graduated in the top 10 percent in one of the highest gpa classes the school has ever seen.Through out my career in the school system it has gone to hell in a hand basket. The teachers at Deans Mill are great, but most recently the schools have laid off almost all of their part time help which is a huge deficit. All the behind the scenes and the people who keep the student to teacher ratio low have been eliminated and the students will pay for this.On top of that, the disciplinary aspect of the high school does not exists, the high school teachers do not care about their students are there is an overwhelming feeling of teachers punishing students who excel. There is an extreme amount of favoritism among the teachers, and if you have the right name you will be in good shape.I could go on but I have reached the character limit.Dont trust scores alone.
