With a child in Pre-K and 5th grade, my kids have both had amazing experiences. Teachers are passionate about the Reggio Emelia approach and are serious about applying it, especially in the younger classes before DC standards and testing come into it. In 4th grade my son said his teacher made him love math. My Pre-k daughter is learning so much in what is clearly a creative and self-led manner.

We love this school. Feels like a country day school more than a public school in the heart of dc. Teachers are close with one another, and the families. Principal Burst is very present and available.
Our daughter came home every week last year saying she wasnt learning anything, but we could SEE the progress she was making. If a student can leave the classroom thinking they had too much fun to be learning, I would say that is a sign of a good elementary school.
The newly renovated campus is beautiful and filled with beautiful spaces - the library, foodprints, and cozy hallway book corner are all dreamy.

The school does a great job of tracking student progress and working on diversity issues. There is a diverse range of instructors in most areas from professional time or tenure to their age, sex, and race. The school is changing location this year and they will be temporarily housed in an area that is considerably out of range for those seeking inbound instruction. They could improve in a few areas but for public school, your child will most certainly be able to read, write, and do their arithmetic. I would remain vigilant as a parent, however as with all public schools you run the risk of having your child receive the amount of attention that you are willing to pay to your child's instruction versus having your child receive the amount of attention that they may truly deserve. Coming from a few other DCPS schools I'd say that the educational quality is not that different than schools that I have dealt with prior. I'm not sure why this school ranks so high. Based upon categories other than standardized testing I'd say that the creativity from the instructors is lagging behind those of many other local schools. I also would say that what many don't factor in is that any school (all things equal) has to spend a considerable amount of time dealing with behavioral issues that can impede tutelage. The students are fairly well behaved here. The behavior I have observed is a factor far more important than even test scores as many students don't test well. If a great instructor has to stop every 5 minutes to deal with a behavior issue in the class then what's the point of having a great instructor when the lesson won't be completed.
