Our 2nd grader has gone to Garrison since kindergarten and we cannot say enough good things about the school. From the principal to even the security, everyone is engaged with the students. The principal is a constant presence and knows all the students. There is a sustained effort to communicate with the parents. We feel like the faculty is invested in our child's education. Highly recommend.

We are the parents of a student in prek3 (and hope to have another one in prek3 in two years)! We looked at all the schools in the area, both DCPS and also charter. Garrison really stood out. It has the nicest environment of all the schools we saw. Our son's teacher, Ms. Rey, is extremely great with kids and really passionate about the kids. The entire school, including the principal Mr. Kip, did a thorough job explaining every single part of the school. As first time parents we really appreciated this. Highly recommend. Only thing is we wish there were dedicated Spanish immersion, but that's rare.

Garrison is a wonderful school where both my children are thriving. Our kids have spent nearly a decade at the school in total and have consistently been surrounded by loving, caring teachers invested in the kids in their classrooms. They LOVE their school. We also regularly hear from teachers that this is the best school they have ever worked at. Highly recommend to any family in the District.

My son is currently in his sixth year at Garrison and were looking forward to fifth grade next year after which we will finally need to move on.

The school is truly a second home for him, full of first rate teachers and the best principal on the east coast if not the world. There are schools in this city with higher test scores, but there absolutely are not schools in this city delivering higher scores while still serving such a diverse community with many low-income families. What they have at Garrison is *excellent teaching* and a great atmosphere that is lifting kids from all backgrounds ahead of where youd expect them to be.

This is the sixth year for our daughter at Garrison and we couldnt be happier with her experience. Principal Kip has created a warm and loving environment that attracts and retains committed professional educators. Our daughter has truly blossomed at Garrison Elementary, thanks to the wonderful teachers, staff, and leadership. The teachers are so wonderful here but most importantly its Garrisons tight knit community. Ive never experienced a school with a more involved PTO (parent teacher organization). They say it takes a village and we have that village here at Garrison. Everyone is so hands on and willing to volunteer to help out where needed. We have so many caring families, teachers and staff at this school that work so hard to make the school the best that it can be for our students.

Also a new middle school, Euclid MS will be built! All future new wildcats will have a new middle school to go to!

If you look in the area where Garrison is in boundary for real estate, there arent a lot of houses available for sale and what goes up for sale gets sold immediately and there is a reason why.

Make no hesitation in sending your child to Garrison!

Our two kids have been at Garrison since PK3 (they are now in 1st Grade and Kindergarten), and I am so thankful for what the Wildcat community has provided them both in terms of academics and social/emotional wellbeing. As a Title I school in the heart of Shaw/U Street/14th Street, Garrison's strength is its diversity across all areas of the socioeconomic spectrum. This applies as well to the teachers and staff who are so pivotal for fostering a safe, inclusive, and caring environment. As a PTO volunteer, I've witnessed firsthand the lengths the Administration will go to not only recruit accomplished educators, but strive to retain them by curating an environment of collegiality, respect, and appreciation. In terms of facilities, funding, programming, process, and partnerships, the Administration is never satisfied with status quo, and actively works with DCPS and other city departments to determine what can be improved, evolved, and updated. Often it takes time and additional community pressure, but since our first year at the school in 2021, so much has already been iterated on, with more improvements already in the planning stages. And it's important to remember that this momentum all stems from what the teachers and staff are achieving with our kids in the classroom: competent teachers and staff that feel appreciated do their jobs at a higher level, which means better academic performance and testing, which means more recognition and investment from DCPS and city entities. It's certainly not perfect, and perfection is in reality not attainable at any school, but what I appreciate is that the Administration strives all year to try to achieve it anyway. And where they may fall short, the rest of the community is so often there to fill in the gaps and reinforce that each student matters and is deserving of this loving place to grow and learn. I could go on and on, but Garrison's continued ranking among the Top 5 elementary schools in all of DC (on OSSEs 2023 and 2024 Report Cards) is significant proof that this place is something special.

Garrison is an intentionally diverse school with a tight knit community and outstanding leaders and staff. The school is highly innovative and is constantly adapting to provide the very best instruction to its students. Most importantly, my kids feel happy, safe, engaged, and loved at Garrison. We had high hopes for our son's first year at Garrison Elementary, particularly after Principal Kip spoke so highly of the staff and described the 4th
grade class that my son would be joining as "unusually kind" . My son's experience has been far from kind. Garrison failed to meet my expectations of providing a safe learning environment for my child, which has now resulted in an unexpected mid-year withdrawal.

Bullying/School Safety
Between August-December, my son has been bullied on more than one occasion. I met with with Principal Kip after the first incident to express my
concern regarding my son's safety and more specifically, that no one from the school had contacted me to inform me of the incident. The
school officer was on the playground during recess and was aware of the incident, but the incident was never reported.

It's now January and yet another bullying incident recently occurred on the playground during recess. An adult eventually intervened and escorted my son to see the school nurse. The school officer was made aware of the incident and yet again, no one contacted me to inform me that my son was being seen by the school nurse in relation to this incident (not the nurse, the school officer, or anyone else from the school).

Communication
Communication needs improvement, in addition to the lack of communication related to the above-mentioned incidents. I raised concern with not having a parent teacher's conference. Principal Kip assured me that a parent teacher conference would be scheduled the following week. Still no parent teacher conference was ever scheduled. Communication concerning field trips has been minimal. For example, permission slips have been sent home for signature, seemingly more so focused on waiving liability to DCPS rather than providing adequate details beyond the date and location. Other pertinent info (i.e., departure and return time, plans for lunch, method of transportation) was never shared. The fourth grade class rode the Metrobus for their last field trip due to financial constraints rather than for a learning experience. While I can appreciate the creativity of the teachers making it happen, perhaps the PTO or individual parents may have been willing to support if this was communicated in advance.

On a positive note, I do have to say the IEP team (Ms. Dorn, Mr Saxton, and Mr. H in particular) were genuinely committed to doing what was in the best interest of my son throughout the IEP evaluation process.

The teachers are amazing. My son loves going to school every day and comes home every night telling me everything he learned. At 4, he has lectured me about the Trachea, the Diaphragm, the dangers of dehydration, and much more about the complexity of the human body.

We are new to Garrison this year and have three children enrolled: Helen (2nd) Frank (K) and June (PK-3). We previously came from a charter school, so we are also new to DCPS. I cant say enough wonderful things about our experiences with Garrison. Starting at the top, Principal Kiplinger brings a focused and warm energy to the families and staff. He always encourages parents to speak out with concerns about any aspect of the school, and more importantly, follows-up with action to make sure that those concerns have been addressed. Communication at any school is vital to ensuring an engaged school community, and with the newsletters and classroom updates, I feel very connected to whats going on, whats expected and how I can get involved. Ive also been to a few of the school gatherings (Back to School Night and Summer PTO Playdates) and Ive had the opportunity to speak with families who have been with Garrison for years. The one thing I keep hearing is that Garrison is like an extended family. There are lots of ways the school seeks to support students and families, whether its through warm greetings at the front door, offering Spanish language interpreters at school events, the accessible support staff, top-notch teachers (who all did home visits and spent an hour each at our home!), work-friendly hours for school events (AM or PM) so that working parents can still participate, and on and on that lend to that family feel.

Our prek teacher is incredible. She is intentional, kind, smart, patient, and creative. She has made her classroom such a nurturing and safe environment for kids and our daughter is already learning so much. She sends out weekly communications updating all of us about what they are working on in class and genuinely loves all of the students in her class. We are impressed by her every day.

Homework begins in kindergarten with age-appropriate activities that take minimal time, and primarily act as a starting point for conversations with our students about what they learned that day - for example, "Tell your family about [the book we read in class today] and draw your favorite part." The greatest emphasis is placed on reading together - a good reminder and motivator to spend real quality time with our kids that will advance their literacy.

He is serious about improving student outcomes at the school, but also explicitly focused on building character and community. Our experience at Garrison has been fantastic so far. Both our sons love school. Facilities are incredible. Brand new renovated school with a gigantic new playing field that just opened in September. Also, two brand new playgrounds, a new outdoor classroom and three art installations. It's so nice, we've been going there on weekends. We've met lots of families in the neighborhood. Many have kids in other schools but now are considering Garrison now that it's renovated. We're impressed with the effectiveness of teachers and leadership in creating a high quality school. Everyone has been very friendly. There's a strong sense of community and commitment.

The administration, staff, and some teachers have awful attitudes. The standards of behavior at the school are almost non-existent, the teachers and staff don't speak grammatically correct language, and are verbally abusive to the students, blatantly in the hallways.

The principal is ridiculous, the assistant principal has the worst attitude and chip on her shoulder, she will go out of her way to provide false narratives about her actions and will treat the student involved poorly if the parent advocates for their child.

The CES classroom is atrocious. It is barley a day care much less an educational setting. Children spend extremely limited time accessing academics. Far below most of their functioning levels. The evaluations they use aren't affective ways of determining a students ability, as they are mostly a lazy computer system evaluation.

There was absolutely no communication from the teacher, she flat out refused to even tell me what my child was working on during class, and refused to send completed work home so that I could see what my child was learning. She said if I wanted to see it I could come to school on my own time and take pictures of my child's work. The principal told me she did have the ability to send completed work home.

We have loved our time at Garrison. We were planning to move out of the neighborhood but are considering staying because we love the school so much. The teachers have been excellent. The principal is outstanding and has a personal connection with students and families. We are happy with after care and it's hard to get our child to leave at the end of the day because he's having too much fun. Most importantly, the school feels like a real community.

Garrison is our neighborhood elementary school and our daughter just started PK3 there. So far, it's been a great experience. The school is newly-renovated and has an excellent outdoor playground, a comparative rarity in DC. Her teachers are highly qualified and caring and the classroom routines and rituals are thoughtful and nurturing for young kids.

There is an active PTO. The administration and Principal Kip engage consistently with parents and students to make everyone feel connected and informed. As a result, I feel confident that I understand what my daughter is doing with her time and that her teachers would come to me immediately with any concerns.

My daughter just started PreK3 so we havent been at Garrison yet, but the entire experience has been wonderful. They have Spanish twice and week, as well as Art, Music and PE. Her teachers are very dedicated and I can tell shell progress so much more than in daycare. The grounds and building are brand new down to the furniture and school equipment. Love the new playground! Its a caring place and you can tell its on the rise for all students!

My child started PK3 and is loving school. They have an excellent Early Childhood program, and he loves his teacher and aid. He also talks about his Specials teachers for art, music, Spanish, and PE. I have noticed a dramatic difference in his level of independence, and he's learned so much in this very short time. We will be staying at Garrison next year, and hopefully beyond.

My child has gone to Garrison since she first started school in kindergarten. At first I was skeptical about the school mainly because of certain staff. I felt like they didn't have the necessary tools and experience to make Garrison number one for me but now I can honestly say what a big difference I can see with my own eyes. When they announced the school might be closing I saw the principal put a lot of effort to keep for that not to happen. I saw constantly on facebook and fliers about the closure which I think helped alot of parents to be involved. Seeing the attitude of the staff and especially the passion that you can see in the principal, I believe is what motivates the team to work hard for their students. I am happy with Garrison and I have no doubt they will be successful in the future. I look forward for my daughter's academic years at Garrison.

We live in the neighborhood and have been very impressed with the community engagement at Garrison. The strong leadership from Principal Hill, as well as the PTA, not only helped to keep Garrison open, but is transforming every aspect of the school. Our daughter is in pre-school and is loving it. The teachers are great and there is a strong community spirit. We are proud to be part of the Garrison family!

My son is in 2nd grade and has been at Garrison for four years. He is reading above grade level and excelling in math thanks to all the great teachers he's had since we've been at the school. I love that he has a very diverse set of classmates who directly mirror the urban neighborhood in which we chose to live. This year we have a full-time on-site music teacher, so orchestra was introduced as an afterschool activity for 2nd-5th graders. My son who hates anything "artsy-fartsy" now LOVES music and is learning the cello. A concert was held recently and it is amazing how quickly the students learned to play string instruments in 5 weeks. They are so proud and it adds a new level of interest and activity for them.

This school has done a 180 degree turn in the last 2 years with the momentum for change lead by a small but strong and involved PTA, the hiring of a new dynamic principal and a teacher base that is experienced, engaged and developing constantly. I have 2 daughters aged 4 and 3 that currently attend PS and PK at Garrison. They are excited to go to school most ( if not every :) ) morning and be with their teachers Ms Lo and Ms Christian; the Tools of the Mind Curriculum is teaching them key concepts like self regulation and my 4 year old is beginning to read ! With field trips to Whole Foods, Sweet Greens, The Shaw Library; And Fall Festival activities, Doctor Seuss Day celebrations, my children are getting the best possible education that I can hope for.

I was hesitant to have my child in any DC school (DCPS or charter) but ended up sending my son to our local elementary school, Garrison (preschool program). I have been very surprised and delighted by the quality of the education, the new principle and the PTA. This is a school that has a lot to offer and is at the tipping point of becoming amazing. On the plate for Garrison in the next two-to- three years is new programming, new fields/exterior spaces, and new interiors (just to mention a few things). All of which, are in the planning and development phases. Parents' opinions and energies are full appreciated and often implemented. Being a DCPS parent is not the easiest path to take but this is one school that has the potential to be something the system can be really proud of. I can't wait to give the school the full five stars.

Hurrah for neighborhood schools! The teachers are great, motivated and warm. The principal is able, present and inspiring. The parents for the most part know each other and get together. Heck - they are neighbors! The PTA simply rocks. The latest example is a sort of "walk to school pool" to ensure all children can get to school even if, say, a parent is stuck in bed with the flu. All this school needs now is for DCPS to add the Spanish language program the parents have been demanding, and finally modernize the premises. Yes, we all know esthetics are not as important as content but we sure would love to have a better looking school! I am so glad we no longer have to leave this amazing neighborhood! Especially since the new coffee place opened just around the corner from the school. The stars are aligning for downtown mothers;-)
