I have one son at Lowell and another who has graduated. Both have loved their school experience. Lowell is their family and their home. They feel free to come as they are and learn deeply. Neither of them has experienced undue stress over school, although they have been challenged. They are comfortable to try new things, including any sport they want, playing instruments, taking part in plays, running for student government, giving speeches, and being away from home for Lowells fantastic capstone trips. We have found the Lowell community friendly and welcoming, from the teachers and staff to the parents to the students themselves.

I am the proud dad of two young boys who are have come up through Lowell's Pre-K and are now in 1st and 4th grade. This school is incredible. Lowell has done so much to support our kids academically and socially, including during the difficult pandemic years. Our boys love going to school, and they have a vocabulary to express their feelings in amazing ways. The teachers are first-rate and the small classes and first-name basis with everyone has helped our kids feel like they are part of a real community that has a set of progressive, shared values. The campus is awesome, too, from the classroom spaces to the beautiful outdoor front field and playground spaces, plus being across the street from Rock Creek park. I was a public school kid, but my wife sold me on the benefit of a K-8 school, and I'm so glad she did. We are so glad we chose Lowell, and we know our kids will see benefits from the school throughout their lives.

Lowell has been amazing for both of our kids. Each of them have very different needs, but whats fantastic about Lowell is how the teachers and the staff meet the kids where they are and still challenge them academically. The amount of growth weve seen in their time there has been unbelievable. Its the best investment weve ever made.

Our family has had the pleasure of attending Lowell for three years, it has been a game changer for our daughter and for us as a family. Coming out of the pandemic, we didn't know if our daughter had received sufficient academic and social support in virtual learning from her public charter school. When we transitioned to Lowell, they immediately assessed where she stood and put in place a learning plan that caught her up quickly. The amazing community also made us feel right at home. There's this common saying about "the Lowell way" that applies to every aspect of your student/family experience there. It's the approach the school takes in making learning fun and effortlessly weaving in the individualized approach that makes your student feel really special. We've seen a huge boost in our daughter's confidence. She is eagerly joining sports teams, speaking publicly, and taking advantage of leadership opportunities. It's just a really joyful place that we eagerly recommend to any of our friends and neighbors. In my own conversations with parents whose students graduated from Lowell and went on to great high schools, they've made it clear that their students are thriving in high school and were well prepared for the next level in academic rigor. That is something important to us and we're confident Lowell is preparing our daughter well for high school.

We've had a great experience at Lowell with our two children. Both started at 3 years old and are now in the Primary School. We have one child who needs academic support and one who does not. They are having different but equally wonderful experiences. When we've talked with an OT or tutor about the support systems set up for our child they always remark on how the school is already doing everything they would recommend.

The parent community is one of the highlights if you like to get involved. Lots of opportunities to volunteer, lead events, and socialize. We've made good friends in our children's classes and beyond.

One of the highlights for me is the amount of outdoor space and proximity to Rock Creek Park. Kids in all grades get opportunities to explore the natural world right on campus. The park is often used for science class, as well as track and cross country practice.

I have two very different children thriving at Lowell School. We have had wonderful experiences with the pre primary, primary and middle school (all schools). The teachers are excellent.

I feel like we are giving our children a gift by sending them to school at Lowell.

The middle school staff in particular really understand and support the complexities of preteens and teens. I wish I had gone to 6-8th here.

I am the parent of three alums who started at Lowell in the pre-primary school and graduated in 8th grade. Our family was extremely happy with the school because of its hands-on, project-based learning opportunities, a beautiful and expansive campus, nurturing teachers, and a warm and welcoming community. The music and arts program was especially wonderful. We are grateful to this school for helping my children grow into curious, confident, and creative young adults.

What I like most about Lowell is that my child is learning to learn and learning to be a good human. The Head of School is truly visionary. She started just before Covid and had to lead through bumpy times in an environment where there were many parent complaints. She has steadfastly, and with clarity and excellence, made incredible improvements to the academic program and school culture. My child has improved and excelled at math and is always working above grade average, which seems to be the norm. The small class size has allowed all the adults in the school to know my child well and teachers are generally very responsive when I have questions or concerns. The new project based learning curriculum has been super impressive. It feels like all schools say they do project based learning but this is different. Teachers have real training in this approach and it's pretty cool to see how it shows up in my child's learning and building real interest in what he's doing. Most of all, it's a community of respect and kindness. I feel like we have real partners in Lowell in raising a good human being who will be a thoughtful and contributing member to our world.

Unqualified administration treats teachers poorly and provides little instructional support. This results in a high level of teacher and student turnover. Parent community is largely ignorant of issues facing teachers. Very little discernible progressive pedagogy beyond surface DEI commitment. Curriculum is ill-defined, non-cohesive, and non-rigorous for many subjects in both lower and middle school. Administrators and some parents bully and threaten those who raise these issues respectfully. The result is a climate of fear for teachers, parents, and students. Administration fails to keep children safe, both physically and emotionally. Terrible school.

My childs experience in the Primary school was lovely but the middle school had very difficult dynamics between the students. Girls in particular, but the boys were also very rough and tumble with many lewd jokes being made. The administration did not address the issue. They brand themselves as being a safe space for middle schoolers to grow but that is not the case. I would recommend the lower school but not anything above 5th grade.

There is a reasonable amount of homework. Very little with the younger kids, more for extra practice and learning the responsibility of homework. Older kids have some each night, but not so much that it interferes with their life or causes misery in your house. I feel like it's perfectly balanced.

Teachers go to great lengths to keep things fresh, fun, interesting, challenging, inline with students' interests and leaving the kids wanting to know more. They also ensure each child is successful and provide support when needed. Small classrooms and the two teacher (per class) model gives these gifted teachers the ability to really deliver.

I love the kids at this school, the respect they are taught through role modeling. The social emotional learning curriculum starts with the youngest children (2.5 years) and continues through 8th grade. When you see the types of projects students choose to do, it's a reflection of the character the school instills in them.

I've heard of very few instances of bullying in my many years at Lowell, and the school has taken bullying very seriously. Small problems have been treated like small problems, and big problems have been treated as zero tolerance.

Our child is in their first year at Lowell and is having a wonderful experience. The small class sizes with two lead teachers allow every students needs to be met. The integrated curriculum and commitment to social justice is evident in the work he does and what he talks about. We had lots of options of schools and couldn't imagine a fit better than Lowell.

Lowell has been marvelous experience for both of our kids -- our younger one started in pre-primary and is now finishing first grade while our older one started in primary and is now in middle school. They have both really connected with their teachers as well as the curriculum and the program both in school and after school are terrific.

For our first grader, homework reinforces math skills that are taught and fosters reading independence, but it is assigned in small chunks on a very manageable schedule and it is just as much about teaching executive function (understand directions, take home, return, etc.) as it is about actually doing it. For our middle schooler, assignments expand upon what she is learning in class and allow her to go into more depth over time. She is able to get real time to work in the hour she is in aftercare and sometimes has assignments that also come home but sometimes not. Again, the time commitment has been very age appropriate.

Each division has a head and there is also an overall head of school. The administrator work effectively together as students transition between divisions, but also provide solid leadership within each division on its own. They welcome discussion and want to hear about concerns as they happen.

Bullying is not tolerated in any form, but at the same time students are encouraged to develop their communication skills, including with their peers. Problem solving is not automatically done by teachers which is good, but conflict is overseen and students do have support in negotiating with their peers.

The teachers are the heart of the school. The caliber and expertise of the faculty and staff in every department are truly stellar. They have lots of experience, deep understanding of child development and work hard to be sure to meet each child's needs. They are incredibly easy to talk to and a wonderful resource to families.

Lowell is where my daughter wants to be. She comes home happy everyday. She misses school when there are long breaks. My dear daughter once told me she wants to be at Lowell forever. I let her know that Lowell goes through 8th grade so she would have to leave at some point. She agreed that she would stay through 8th grade.

My son doesn't have learning differences per se, although he was supported early in his education when he had problems with spelling and he has been given advanced math work because he has very strong math skills. Phenomenal! My child is a better, more well-rounded person because of his many years at Lowell. The school teaches him that he is part of a global culture, where differences are welcomed and celebrated. This is incorporated into every aspect of the challenging curriculum. Neither is sacrificed for the other. Importantly, because of the low adult to child ratio, Lowell is able to meet every child where they are at any given point in time. When my son was having trouble learning to spell, he was given supplemental assistance with this skill until it was no longer an issue. At the same time, because he was advanced in math, he was given more challenging assignments and encouraged to work ahead, which he loved.

Our family has had an incredibly positive, thoughtful, and stimulating experience at this independent, progressive school. Weve had two kids at Lowell, both went from primary school through 8th grade. Its uniquely welcoming and forward thinking, but also offers students an academically challenging and integrated learning environment. The arts (music, visual arts studio, and black box theater), science (labs and adjacent Rock Creek Park), and athletics (pool and swimming programwhere both our kids learned to swimbasketball, running, and field sports) are impressive and thrive at Lowell. The teachers are genuinely supportive and are the secret ingredient that make this pre-K-8 program exactly what recent pedagogical research says is the best environment for kids to grow into young teens. The parent community is really involved, too. The high diversity in the student body AND in the faculty and staffincluding an incoming African-American female head of schoolare a rare combination in an independent school in this area. Hard not to be enthusiastic!

Lowell School has been a great fit for all three of my very different children. Each child has their own unique needs and energy levels, yet Lowell manages to not only teach and reach them, but to push them to excel. My oldest graduated from 8th grade with confidence and pride. He easily meets the challenges of his rigorous high school, but even more importantly the joy of learning instilled in him by Lowell carries him through the daily high school grind. When my family applied to Lowell, our oldest son wasn't even three-years-old. We knew who he was but didn't know who is was going to be. We looked at a lot of schools. We did our research. Canvased our network of friends and families who traveled this road. We considered the different pedagogies and how teachers were trained. My wife and I pondered if there was room for our child to grow academically, socially and emotionally. Most of the schools we considered met our threshold criteria: academic rigor balanced with constructive play that fosters individual creative expression and learning styles. At the end of the day, our family decided on Lowell because we thought it best represented our values as a family and where if we (as parents) had to go to school all over again Lowell is where my wife and I would want to be.

While our oldest son has thrived at Lowell, in my mind, our youngest son has provided the best social proof that we made the right choice for our family by coming to Lowell. Our baby boy was born three months into our first year at Lowell. Just about every day of his life, he has visited Lowell's amazing beautiful campus and interacted with students, parents, teachers and administrators. If Lowell, wasn't a place he wanted to be, he certainly would have let us know.

He let us know (constantly) that Lowell is where he wanted to be.

"When I go to Lowell, Dad," was a constant question.

He started pre-primary in the Fall and every morning he leaps out of the backseat with boundless joy and excitement.

Although, both boys have very different personalities, Lowell has created an environment that has allowed them to flourish in their own ways. Yet, both share characteristic which I've come to learn are hallmarks of Lowell students: emphatic; creative problem solvers; articulate about the needs and the concerns of others; and a zest for exploring ideas and learning.

This is our 5th year at Lowell and we could not be more pleased with the school. Lowell has provided a warm, nurturing environment that has helped our child develop into a confident, engaged learner. We have been very impressed by the academic rigor of the curriculum at Lowell, and also by Lowell's efforts to promote the social-emotional growth of its students -- something many schools claim to do but, in our experience, few truly deliver. The parent community is extremely warm and welcoming, the campus is leafy and spacious, and we love the school athletic programs, that start as young as kindergarten in some sports (swimming, track) and allow every child to participate, regardless of ability. We feel very lucky to have landed at Lowell.

I have two Lowell students, one who started in pre-primary and graduated from 8th grade last year, and another who is currently in middle school. I cannot say enough positive things about the overall excellence of the school, from the dedicated faculty who nurture intellectual curiosity in every child, to the thoughtfulness of the rich, cutting-edge curriculum, the intentional diversity of the student body, the glorious eight-acre campus, and the warmth of the parent community. I have watched my children who are two completely different personalities each grow and blossom into ambitious learners and confident, capable students. In addition to continually challenging students academically with both enrichment and support available when desired the school fosters a sense of civic responsibility and social justice that will help to produce the next generation of much-needed environmental stewards and advocates for justice. Well, done, Lowell nobody does it better!

Homework at Lowell serves to reenforce the day's learning, vs. teach new content. Gone are the days of going home and reading chapters to learn how to solve math problems. Homework at Lowell simply reenforces concepts that the teachers have previously covered.

We moved our children from DC public schools to Lowell in 3rd and 2nd. We wanted a more intimate, inclusive experience that teaches to the talent of the individual. Lowell is that and does just that and more. Our kids are now in 5th and 4th grade, and when I go to Back to School night at the start of each year, I always cry (3 years in a row now) upon hearing the curriculum, meeting the dedicated and enthusiastic teaching team, and getting insight into the year's all-inclusive, hands-on, empathetic learning methods. Lowell cares about and respects each person, small and tall, young and old, that walks through its doors. We've heard stories of people moving to other cities and even countries and returning in a year because of Lowell. These families cancelled plans, changed jobs, and relocated back to DC just so their children could attend Lowell. I absolutely understand why.

We have had two sons attend Lowell School. Lowell does a fantastic job at translating progressive educational philosophy (in which kids' interests are valued and help shape the direction of teaching, and kids are encouraged to advocate for their needs and views) into practical application. We have seen our kids develop deep interest in learning, and developed the tools and skills to explore their interests. The faculty/teachers at Lowell are respectful of teh kids, and committed to helping them learn. We're amazed how our kids have had fun becoming lifelong learners!

We have appreciated how Lowell has take to heart what studies have shown - that loading up homework in elementary school has no relationship to learning or success in later grades. So Lowell gives just enough homework to teach kids that school is their "job" but not so much to cause tears or anxious nights. Kids who graduate from Lowell go on to do just fine, with acceptances at a range of local high schools, including all of the "prestigious" ones - but Lowell kids know by the time they graduate what kind of school suits them, and what their interests are.

Finally, Lowell is a genuinely diverse place - in ethnicity, religion, parents, socioeconomics. No school is perfect, but Lowell gets more fundamentals right than any other school we've ever seen.

We love Lowell, and its' warm, nurturing environment and focus on each child as an individual. Our son has grown so much, academically and socially, in confidence and in life skills during his time there. There is truly a focus on cultivating creativity, nurturing curiosity and a love of learning, and meeting each child where they are. Our child has been encouraged to be his very best self, and the warm and dynamic teachers there know and work with both his strengths and weaknesses. The integrated, project-based curriculum, progressive focus, incredible arts program, diverse community, and focus on social justice and building empathetic little people is the icing on the cake. This is a wonderful school and we feel very fortunate to be here!

We have 2 children at Lowell who now are in the 8th and 6th grades. Our kids are very different learners. Lowell works well for both of them. Lowell's particular strength is teaching to the strengths of the kids as individuals and teaching them to become learners -- to think imaginatively and with structure and to express themselves clearly in writing and orally in all their subjects -- mathematics, science or the humanities. The teaching is also very hands-on and integrated; so, for example, if they are studying medieval history and sieges, they will building catapults and studying about their physics and the mathematics of moving objects as well as medieval music and dance. There is also a real warmth and joy about the school that you feel as soon as you enter the doors and a genuine excitement among the students to create and learn.

Our son has been enrolled in Lowell's primary education program for almost four years and we are delighted with the experience. The diverse student body, faculty and administration continues to enhance our son's world view, and our experience of the first round of standardized testing confirms the hight level of academic achievement of the school overall. The campus is one of the finest we have ever seen. Lowell is a fantastic school for my child and my family. My child looks forward to going to school everyday and has fun. Since she is fairly young, that is exactly what I want her to feel. At the same time, she comes home and is excited to talk about the fun things that she did that day, all of those fun things being educational. Lowell teachers and staff are patient, understanding and flexible.

Lowell is a wonderful school. We have been part of the community for over 10 years. We have been consistently impressed by Lowell s attention to the developmental and individual needs of children. The community is diverse and welcoming. Our second child is now in middle school. She is engaged and happy. The curriculum is incredibly well designed. The students complete complex projects that challenge everyone. The teachers are passionate about their subject areas and the kids they teach. The delta program (what other schools call advisory) helps the kids take more responsibility for their learning and themselves. We can t imagine a better place to go to middle school.

We have multiple children at Lowell and the school has been fantastic for each child. Thoughtful and caring teachers really take the time to support and challenge students - from extra help to extra learning opportunities if a child has a gift or passion. Small classes and a dynamic hands-on curriculum makes learning a joyful experience. The school has changed a bit in recent years, adding a great (inclusive) team sports program and a terrific middle school. The campus is perched on Rock Creek Park, and really beautiful - most importantly kids use it fully. Great outplacement to wonderful DC high schools.

Lowell is a fantastic school - we have our child in Pre-Primary and she has flourished. The teachers are committed and enrichment is provided not only interaction with the other students and teachers but also the creative spaces. The light filled classrooms make a delightful place for learning. Plus on "campus" swim lessons are hard to beat. We love the school and community it fosters.

My children have been at Lowell for 4 years. Their teachers have been committed to their success and have understood their strengths and challenges. We've had many opportunities to enjoy the school as a family. The parents are diverse and involved. There is a definite emphasis on acceptance and respect of others.

Lowell School has a pre-school, primary school and middle school. It is a quick 10 minute drive from our home in Chevy Chase, DC. There are short cuts through Rock Creek Park. Lowell has given our two boys the richest, most creative and exciting learning experience that we could have ever imagined. Both boys have flourished as a result of Lowell s extraordinary faculty and commitment to diversity. They foster each child s unique gifts and talents from day one, and have built year-on-year with both our sons. Our boys love going to school, knowing their teachers are excited to provide a challenging, hands-on, interesting, and multi-disciplinary curriculum. The boys know that they will be held to the highest standards of learning, creativity, collaboration and innovative thinking. Lowell has already given our boys the encouragement and foundation necessary to think confidently about their futures, whichever direction they choose. The parent community is intelligent, wordily, warm and very welcoming.

As far as I can tell Lowell School is the best early education institution in the world. My two sons attended from pre-K to 6th grade. Every teacher experience was excellent and each child received an education exactly tailored to their unique personalities and learning abilities. There is a strong emphasis on community building and accepting diversity. They had an affirmative action toward children of gay couples and adopted children. My children were top performers in their classes, and yet were discriminated against when applying to private schools after Lowell because the parents were not rich. Most DC private schools only give their financial aid to increase minority representation.

My son is a Kindergartener and I couldn't be happier! The school teaches to the whole child. My son has a fantastic teacher (and assistant teacher). The teacher is warm, receptive, and REALLY takes a genuine interest in each child. This is my son's first year- both he and I have made great friends! The community is extremely warm and welcoming. The student/teacher ratio is wonderful! The school has many extracurricular activities- a swim team, track team, basketball, etc. What I love is they even allow the K's to participate!!!! I couldn't be happier!!!!
