Stoddert Elementary School

I'm so sad my kid is currently in 5th grade and can't stay here forever. Both her and her brother have had outstanding teachers that have effectly managed their classrooms and despite the large sizes seem to have gotten to know my kids rather well so that my kids can both learn but also develop socially. The administration is kind and caring, support and special education is amazing and has worked seamlessly in integrating my kid's need for small group/1:1 help while also giving enough classroom time. The community of families is large and organized and the school has many engaging events but also does an incredible job creating opportunities for students to be stewards of their school, through safety patrol, yearbook, farmers market, etc. This is the elementary school of dreams!!! How lucky we are to be one of the pack!

Our children are both at grade level, but the teachers are expected to help children with learning disabilities and other challenges with virtually no extra support in the classroom.

This is not the worst school in the country. And, despite its problems, it is one of the best in DC. But it is certainly not at the level of some schools that have better funding and a more collaborative, respectful approach to working with parents.

A lot of the homework is on computer programs even at the younger grades when children benefit more from pen and paper homework.

The teachers do their best, but they are not effectively supported. The school is understaffed, and the administration and support staff don't have creative solutions to deal with it.

The leadership is fairly kind, but they don't take responsibility for a lack of education in some of the support staff. And they don't understand how to create community in a school. There is also a huge problem with security in this school. Anyone can walk into the building most of the day without buzzing in. The security office sits fifty feet away from the door. To compensate for this, the security officer screams at some parents for really unnecessary stuff. No one wants to break the rules. But the security staff treats some parents like they are the enemy. Others they are very kind to. There seems to be some kind of hierarchy based on whims. There doesn't seem to be an understanding that the best way to create a safe school is to create a sense of community. Many parents are afraid to enter the school, because the rules are unclear so arbitrarily enforced.

Everything about Stoddert has been wonderful. Excellent, dedicated teachers, wonderful before and aftercare program run by the PTO and kind and committed parents of current and former students. Great staff. Great special education services. My 4th-grade daughter has attended since preschool and loves going every day. Her teachers have engaged and motivated her and exposed her to a wide range of ideas.

Very engaged community, this is a neighborhood school with a lot of student resources: garden program, computer lab, outdoor fields and off-site art education. The school needs to improve its communication with parents. Fantastic teachers, large class sizes, and updated technology/facilities. Very pleased with the way my children have learned as part of the Stoddert community.

Stoddert completed its LEED Gold facility with geothermal powered heating and cooling, a full-sized gym and wonderful technology amenities. Now it has a world-class facility to augment its world class educators. This school is raising the bar for public education in Washington DC!
