Capital City PCS - Middle School

This is a wonderful school. I've worked at 3 other middle schools in DC and this is the first one I would willingly send my own children. Several of my students have parents who are staff members which is a testament to the quality of education student engage in at CCPCS. That being said, the middle school is only in its 4th year and could benefit from a higher staff retention rate and stronger behavior management system. The current workload is very demanding and not at all conducive to retaining newer teachers.

Our school provides a welcoming yet academically challenging environment for the kids. That is, the kids know that they are cared about by the faculty and staff - it almost feels like family. Kids don't fall through the cracks here. At the same time the kids know that they are expected to actively participate in a creative and thoughtful way. I think Capital City strives to produce good citizen scholars, and they do a pretty good job, based on the number of middle school kids that go on to the best D.C. high schools. O.k. so sometimes they may be a bit disorganized, and the administration could do a much better job of including the parents, I've always felt that the kids feel like they belong to a community here at CCPCS.

I currently have a 6th and an 8th grader at Capital City's middle school. Their experiences at the school have been fantastic. The teachers are great - they really know the students. I'm always impressed by how they involve students in recognizing their own weaknesses and figuring out how to work on them. The arts teachers - drama, visual art, and music - are great; the new facility is wonderful. The school has started a weekly farmers market to sell produce grown at the school as well as a nearby farm. One of my sons has an IEP and the inclusion services he receives are terrific, allowing him to get the extra help he needs without being stigmatized by being pulled out of class.

This school has turned my kids into champion readers. They have a good bunch of teachers and are experimenting with ways to make social media work for them. Nice new facilities and nice outdoor space.

Capital City Public Charter School has a middle school that begins in 5th grade. 5th and 6th grade are on one side of the school with 7th and 8th on the other. 5th grade has 2 main classes Humanities and Math/Science. It's a great way for kids to ease into "middle school" developing more responsibility and guided social skills. Specials are music, art, drama, and spanish. Fitness and health are 4 times per week and once per week electives are offered. After school activities range from soccer to fashion design. Cap City is the most diverse school in the city. They emphasize social curriculum, the arts and expeditionary learning which the kids love! This school community still has time to grow and understand one another better as the population greatly increased in 2012. But the basic model and opportunities available to students are exemplary and with time I think will become one of the best public school options in DC.
