The Reading Interventionist is really good. Langley has an assistant principal just for special needs, to make sure everything is taken care of.

Conscious Discipline helps all the kids have good social skills and be really nice to each other. It has really made a difference with behavior compared to before we had the program. Kids are not allowed to bully at Langley.

Overall our experience has been great. The teachers truly go the extra mile for all the students, regardless of whether they are behind or advanced. Most of the kids in my child's class are right on grade level and there is also an advanced reading group. My child has loved all of the teachers and also loves the family events. We are so excited and proud to be part of a school that is improving.

There is not too much homework, and the teachers help the kids with it after school.

Posted: December 1, 2019

The teachers have all been really good. One of them won an award last year. Many of them are experienced and just a few are new.

In Conscious Discipline the teachers show the kids all about character and how to treat others with respect and have healthy relationships. I really like being at a school with a social skills program. They also have a parent training so parents can learn to play along.

The principal and the assistant principals are really good. I like what they have done with the school. The test scores last year went up quite a bit, and more and more students are wanting to come in.

Extremely and pleasantly surprised by the dedication of administration, teachers, parents and community to think innovatively to turn this school around. I planned to send my children to non neighborhood school because of its 2 out of 10 rating. I went to many private, public, and charter school open houses and none impressed me as much as Langley. The commitment, energy, and drive for excellence to meet each students needs no matter background is impressive. The diversity and excellence is not yet reflecting on this website but I’m very excited that my children are part of Langley!

Passionate, tailored approach that cares about students first. Developed strategic plan to lay foundation for strong school, highest caliber teachers, family engagement, and student achievement...test scores and increasing reputation will follow.

Our family’s experience at Langley has been outstanding. One of our children is in kindergarten after two years of preschool at Langley. The interpersonal and emotional coping skills our daughter has learned surpassed all expectations. Her emotional and social growth are flourishing and in kindergarten she has received effective and engaged instruction. Her teachers have all been phenomenal. They know each kid’s strengths and needs, both emotional and academic. They quickly recognized when my daughter was progressing more quickly than classmates in certain subjects, and made arrangements to keep her lessons sufficiently challenging to keep her growth on track.

The Conscious Discipline program taught my daughter to manage her emotions and communicate appropriately even during stressful situations. Undoubtedly, this experience in preschool will benefit her for a lifetime.

My kindergartener is ahead of classmates in some subjects and Langley has kept the lessons challenging for her. I was impressed that her teacher recognized her progress and arranged for her to study these subjects with a first-grade class.

Langley surpassed my expectations. It is a warm, diverse and academically challenging environment. I never expected my 4 year old to already be learning how to read and being able to express her emotions as well as she does because of the tools she has been taught at Langley.

My daughter came home with worksheets and we used them for coloring and activities to do together. They helped her learn her alphabet and numbers.

Posted: December 4, 2018

Ms. Smith and Ms. Williams are incredible. My daughter loves her class and always tells me what she is learning in school (like about recycling, buildings, etc...)

Conscious discipline focuses on empathy towards others. When you accept how you feel and understand how someone else feels - you are better able to handle the situation.

Posted: December 4, 2018

Principal Drumm-Canepa introduced Conscious Discipline to the school and it has helped overall with school life, teaching and even at hope. It builds children's emotional intelligence so they can better communicate when they are feeling frustrated or sad.

Posted: December 4, 2018

Teachers focus on small group lessons to help have more one-on-one time with students and identify where they have strengths or weaknesses. Langley is lucky in that we have many special resource teachers. Kids who are reading or performing above level are also challenged. Students are reading above average in many of the grades.

Teachers take good care of the kids and make sure everyone behaves with respect towards one another and in return, respect themselves.

My son had a wonderful PK-4 experience at Langley last year. His teachers blew me away and I'm still impressed by all he learned. Leadership is visible and accessible to parents. We moved him to a Spanish charter school for K, but have wondered if staying at Langley wouldn't have been the better choice.

My child was so proud to attend pre-k 3 at Langley. As the year went on, I was more certain that I had made the right decision in choosing our neighborhood school. She learned so much and made friends who live nearby. We appreciate being a part of this community. Can't wait for next year!

Posted: August 1, 2017

Learning materials were occasionally sent home, with no expectation that they'd be filled out or returned. I like seeing what the kids were working on.

Posted: August 1, 2017

My child's pre-k 3 teachers were energetic, engaging, patient and showed genuine care for our whole family. While volunteering for the school I also had the opportunity to observe some of the teachers for older students and I was completely impressed.

I noted obvious improvement in this from the beginning to the end of the school year, based on behavior I witnessed in the hallways.

Principal Drumm is very responsive and available to parents and students alike. Always at the front of the school at the beginning and end of the school day.

The principal and vice principal function as a team to welcome students to the building and send them off in the afternoon. The leadership is focused on improving students' social-emotional learning, an approach that should pay dividends over the next year or two in terms of rising test scores.

Posted: July 30, 2017

There are three chances during the school year for parent-teacher conferences, but teachers will in practice speak with parents as soon as a difference or difficulty comes to light and make a plan to overcome it.

Posted: July 30, 2017

Students are responsive to correction and the focus on social-emotional learning, including facilitation of active recess games and work with Little Partners for Peace, ensures students are learning the skills to resolve conflicts and act out aggression in positive ways.

Posted: July 30, 2017

Our year at Langley was absolutely delightful. This is a school on the rise, and I'm certain that the test scores will soon begin to reflect the strong leadership and the hard work of students and teachers alike.

Posted: July 30, 2017

There was no homework assigned in PK3, which was completely appropriate!

Posted: July 30, 2017

The teachers are loving and care deeply for their students.

Posted: July 30, 2017

Daily, older students get on the intercom in the morning to lead the school in reciting its values and announcing events of the day. The school also takes the time to celebrate student successes with school pride days (usually involving getting to dress down in the school color, orange) and awards assemblies.

Posted: July 30, 2017

Thus far, our homework has been minimal, but age appropriate (as we prepare for kindergarten). We occasionally receive packets that focus on writing letters and/or math games.

Posted: July 30, 2017

My son has grown tremendously this year, both emotionally and academically. His lessons, and the activities in classroom, have been both stimulating and age appropriate. We love both his teacher and teacher's aid. They have come with experience and are always available to communicate with parents.

Posted: July 30, 2017

All teachers have been trained in Conscious Discipline, a method of teaching students self-control in the classroom. School assemblies and other activities are being used as a tool to enhance positive community. My son came home one day saying, "mommy, I am going to treat people the way I want to be treated."

Posted: July 30, 2017

Vanessa Drumm, is working to advance academics, while focusing on school community and culture. She is revamping school curriculum to make it more challenging, and we expect to see the results of such efforts in upcoming test scores.

As a centrally located school with a range of amenities (three floors, gym, cafeteria, theater), Langley is actually uniquely able to support students of all learning strata. We take in area special needs students, while at the same time, as a STEM school, we send "future engineers" to robotics competitions. There is something for every learning level at this school. We even have a garden where children get hands-on experience growing their own vegetables!

Posted: July 30, 2017

I have not had experience with bullying yet. This year, however, we are getting a specialist to coordinate free play. The idea is that all children are engaged with physical activity at recess. The specialist is trained to look for bullying, and diffuse potential problems in real time.

Posted: July 30, 2017

My son's experience has been very positive. My greatest surprise is how much Spanish he knows - completely unexpected, considering we are at a STEM school.

I taught voluntary conflict management after-school classes for a semester at Langley. Thoroughly enjoyed my time there and the students were lovely. Would like to see more fostering for academic excellence however particularly when class have students with strong personalities.
