I have 2 kids at MV. Overall a great school. The location/area is the biggest "issue". So many incidents occur around the school. The staff do go above and beyond to ensure the kids safety during lock-downs. Most teachers are great and the new Admin have made great improvements to the school. The Spanish language component is a plus. More resources are needed for kids that enter the school at a higher grade with no prior Spanish experience.

This school is very poorly run and is disorganized and lacks basic communication with families and teachers. There is no active coaching for teachers. They have a crazy turnover rate and have no plan in place to keep good teachers. There is no social emotional support for students or tier one behavior protocols. Incidents would happen and admin would ignore the issues at hand and refuse to talk to families. I would not recommend this school to anyone.

We are parents of two students. And had a great experience with Mundo. The teachers have been great. My kids love school and learning Spanish. The Admin communication is at times - so so. But the new parent group, Padres, is amazing and working hard to improve communication.

The conduct at Calle 8 is very undesirable, I witnessed the coordinator of the aftercare program groping in a very inappropriate way the afro Latina receptionist several times, I mentioned it to HR, but nothing was done.

What a shame, this school had such a promising potential and once was a place we hold in high regards. It had lost its way in uplifting teachers and students. As 2nd grade parent we have to make the difficult decisions of not returning the next school year. Complaints has been ignored by the administration time after time. One administrator has the audacity to tell our family if we are not happy we can go to a different school. We have 100sof kid on the waiting list and we can replace your spot instantly was what we were told . Its is mind boggling how they are still in existence. Our child in second grade was sent home with a tracing packet. They should be learning how to write a proper formatted sentence and reading not tracing at this grade level.

What should be shining example of bilingual education is little more than The Lord of the Flies of daycare. Behavioral problems run amuck. Theres a revolving door of educators. Parents are hiring tutoring services to provide education Mundo Verde fails to provide. Parents have written school leadership with concerns. Never a response. Teachers share with parents that they dont receive the support and resources they need to run the class. Further, the school makes promises it later breaks.

Our kids classroom alone has seen turnover of four teachers. And her aftercare teacher resigned, too.

As we approach the end of the year, weve been informed that our child is not meeting minimum requirements in math, or for reading and writing in Spanish. Shes actually at a lower level at the end of the year than she was at the start of the year.

Shes been bullied incessantly - physically and verbally abused - by another student. Weve had to enroll her in self defense - and then shes told by supervising adults shes not allowed to. One staff member actually demanded that she and her attacker promise to be friends. Such gross ineptitude.

Parents have banded together and have shared concerns with school leadership. Not a single response.

Heres why. For this school year, between the two campuses, 63 students have been invited off the MySchoolDC wait list to attend 2nd grade at Mundo Verde - as of October 2021. That means three full 2nd grade classes have left the school to get their education elsewhere to make way for these students. Why would the administrators feel the need to respond when there are 90 students waiting to take one of the 63 seats vacated?

School leadership is silent and arrogant. For a school once heralded as among DCs finest, Mundo Verde has completely lost its way and is an utter failure on its most basic mission. Someone somewhere really needs to give this school a thorough investigating.

We have a child on the autism spectrum who has complex learning and sensory needs. Attempting to send the to Mundo Verdde PCS has ended up as one of the worst experiences of our lives.. The school had not even completed our child's IEP and supporting documents until over halfway through the school year, and by then trust was eroded, behaviors were cemented and the damage was done.

The school tried to force us out, but we refuse to budge. We ultimately had to hire an education advocate just to survive to the end of the year, and in the words of our advocate, Mundo Verde ended up being "one of the worst, most disorganized experiences I have ever seen, in a long career."

If your child has complex learning needs and if you're thinking of sending them to MV, I suggest you run for the hills. This school is poorly organized at best and has no idea what they're doing at worst. No child with a learning disability deserves this.

Mundo Verde does not uphold its Mission and Vision. Often times excuses are made for the lack of academic rigor that is found in competing Public Charter Schools and or D.C. Public Schools. Extremely disappointed at the lack of quality educators, staff, and leadership. This school portrays an image of equity, inclusion, and uplifting underserved communities; however, they could care less about students, families, and their employees. Stay away from this place as year after year there are significant issues that are raised by families and staff, legal claims, and dismissive culture. Often times, families and staff are told all the right things without any follow-through from the school. I know of numerous families and staff that filed formal complaints to DCPCSB, OMBUDSMAN, EEOC, and the Office of Human Rights for violations and systematic issues dealing with employees and students.

The leadership at this school continues to alienate both teachers and parents.
The leadership does everything they can to ignore or minimize parent involvement/feedback.
The executive director has a strong distaste for interacting with parents; she also throws teaching staff and principals under the bus whenever she has the chance.
The teachers are generally wonderful; however they are given no support and are understaffed and have little control over school decisions.
The school takes children who don't speak Spanish even in the upper grades, adding to the challenges that teachers have.
The lower grades tend to do OK; however by the time the kids hit 3rd grade the classrooms tend to be chaotic and this has been normal for years.
Teachers quit mid-year constantly and it is normal for students to have substitute teachers, who are given no support, teach for major sections of the year.
Bullying and violence is rampant in the upper grades and kids generally have to fend for themselves.
Little academics is taught in upper grades due to the high levels of chaos/ serious safety issues.

It is worth mentioning the school's strengths: there truly are some fabulous and committed teachers, and our kids have valued that. With respect to the values of the school, they are also outstanding and holistic. For example, in first grade they learn about composting from a science perspective but also a social perspective; why people don't compost and how they can try and change that. I actually don't have a problem with the behavior management at the school; I feel they use less harsh discipline compared to some other bilingual charter schools in the area.

Yet there are big challenges at the school. There is high turnover among leadership (i.e. 2 principals came and went in the past 2 years) and high teacher turnover. I asked one good teacher why she was leaving and she said that she had an issue with a co-teacher that simply never got addressed. A couple of years ago, the schools' teachers unionized and while that is fine for them, it is highly unusual for a charter school and in my mind a mark of a school with a problem. During that period, the teachers explained to parents that there is a communication problem with the administration and also teacher pay is an issue, among other things. I heard another good teacher say that the most talented teachers are asked to take on the majority of special needs kids and fill out loads of additional paperwork without being compensated anything extra.

There are also some bad teachers who do not get held to account in spite of parent complaints.

Other challenges that we have experienced is that the school doesn't do much for talented students. My daughter has admitted to being very bored in her math class and perhaps we are more aware of it due to the pandemic. I mentioned it to her teachers, but we are going to look for an outside program this summer in order to supplement it. There are kids who enter the upper grade levels with little to no Spanish and I have no idea how the teachers manage that.

In terms of communication, the leadership does reach out a lot to parents for input and does share information, and allows parents at board meetings. But problems sometimes go unresolved and the board seems unwilling to make tough decisions that would address these challenges. As a result, there are frequent meetings with the administration where parents are actively complaining.

I am not an active complainer, but I have unfortunately kind of fallen out of love with the school.

The only reason I gave them 2 stars is just for the teachers. I have no complaints in regards to the the teachers , they have been amazing in providing an amazing support to my child especially during the pandemic and before school closers. With that being said how administration handled this difficult year and the luck of transparency is an believable. The school preaches how we are a community but families needs and voices were neglected during this ordeal of a year. They need to take a deep look at their leadership make adjustment to reflect the schools mission.

It was lovely when my child was little. But with each subsequent year, inept leadership contributes to a steady erosion of trust and quality. Of the five bilingual elementary schools feeding into DC International for middle and high school, Mundo Verde students have the lowest test scores, and are the lowest performers. The most impressive data point coming out of MV is their waitlist, which is sure to dwindle, due to the chaotic environment that leadership refuses to properly address.

There are great teachers, and there are really bad teachers. And there is a revolving door of teachers leaving at the end of the school year, as well as teachers quitting mid-year. As a result, the good teachers are frazzled, burned out, stretched too thin, and are likely to leave at the end of the school year.

The core values of the school are ESPICA, which focuses on empathy, speak your truth, perseverance, inquiry, collaboration and appreciation. The school does a good job at promoting these values among the student body.

The Executive Director, and Chief Schools Officer, need to leave. The school is suffering mightily from Founders' Syndrome. There are very serious issues of bullying, violence, teacher quality - and school leadership does not respond adequately, and they will not meet with parents about issues of collective concern. Trust has been destroyed over the last 2-3 years. School leadership is not interested in authentically engaging or listening to families.

The Special Ed team is getting better. For a long time, it was clear that the Special Ed didn't really know what they were doing. There was no reporting form, no data, no clear communication, and everything seemed catch-as-catch-can. While it's going a little better, particularly with the arrival of some new team members, the jury remains out. It's hard to catch up on so much lost learning, when this team was so thin and inept for so long.

This is the school's absolute worst characteristic. MV is TERRIBLE at adequately responding to bullying and behavioral problems. As a result, other kids are held hostage, with virtually no learning happening. Kids have been sent to the hospital, gotten black eyes, threatening and racist remarks have been hurled, even a teacher got punched in the face - yet the school does not respond adequately. They claim that there's not enough space to pull kids out who have behavioral problems, and so, teachers come, and teachers go - and all of the families who have options pull their kids of out of this school.

my son has started pk3 in this school and we could not be happier to get elected in lottery on our first choice. it is a great place for kids to learn. teachers and the faculty are very nice and responsive to any concern. great community to be.

We were at MV for many years but the quality seemed to be getting worse each year. We decided to leave due to our dissatisfaction with the schools approach to learning, behavior management, and the overall culture of the school. We found the discipline strategies were ineffective and Leadership was often unresponsive or would not address issues of concern directly.

I love the idea and mission of MV, but the leadership's social justice warrior tendencies were overbearing and led to blind spots, including meting out unfair consequences for bullying and overreaction in moments that should have been teachable.

My child was mostly happy at MV--far more so than at a prior DC charter school. (except for the cafeteria food!) While I really enjoy the parents and most of the staff, I am less happy overall because I feel that the school leadership lacks processes for incidents and reporting and that their ultra progressive philosophy leads to overreaction typical of PC culture. I hope MV achieves balance, because it is a worthy mission. First steps could be better consequence management and a bullying prevention program.

I was hoping for a well-rounded education and an introduction to Spanish for my child, but so far it's been more an awkward mash-up of social justice soap boxing (which I'd be ok with, if other educational basics were being met), "green education," and some Spanish comprehension. Teachers are kind and intelligent but may be hamstrung by administrative policies that seem mostly designed to impress parents. These complaints may all be the growing pains of a relatively new and ambitious school, but I'm not sure we'll hang around to find out.

I really wanted to like Mundo but honestly the goals are too convoluted. Is it a sustainability school? Are they more academics centered? My daughter spent three months learning about corn but can tell me nothing about corn. She also cant say the days of the week or months of the year in Spanish or English and she is in the second half of first grade. The communication also is not effective. The school uses The learning tree app, but still sends a bulletin via email. And the teachers use both learning tree and an additional app. I still have no idea what the aftercare teachers use to communicate with parents. I am constantly checking my email and all three apps ro make sure I dont miss anything. We probably will send her ro a more traditional school, which is hard bc she will lose the language

There are so many problems at this school. I fear for my kids safety at Mundo Verde. There is a serious problem with the school's approach to discipline, which not only takes away from instructional time, it also causes emotional harm to the children.

Hardest teaching job I've ever had. Too many major discipline problems, even violence did not lead to suspensions. Classroom did not feel safe. Teachers getting bitten and hit here. Kids stabbing one another with pencils, overturning furniture, punching and kicking others and throwing supplies. No suspensions. Just keeping chaos from breaking out was a full time job. I sure hope things get better here. It's a shame, they have awesome goals and great ideals. They hire great staff here. But teachers' hands are tied by those ideals and administration does not make the tough decision to give adequate consequences.

Great teachers work at this school, this is a hardworking, caring and compassionate staff. The school is selective when hiring. I think teacher effectiveness is impacted by the discipline issues.

This is our first year at MV and we love it. We couldn't be happier with our school choice. The teachers and the leadership care deeply about each student and we love how their core instructional model, expeditionary learning, integrates with bilingualism and their sustainability concepts. They really want to build a strong community and it shows through the number of events they organize and constant communication with parents. Our son is happy and thriving!

This is my daughters second year at MV and we could not be more happy with the school, teachers, administration, mission and community. My daughter loves the school, has become fluent in Spanish already. The teachers are supportive and the classrooms are friendly and accepting of all students. The mission and vision of the school is seamlessly integrated into the curriculum.

New, with new school challenges but doing a great job! My daughter is in her second year with MV. My only complaints are that with many new charter schools their location will change a few times, also rapid growth of the program changed the dynamic of the school. But these are issues that other charter programs experience so I don't really attribute them particularly to MV. Overall the teachers are extremely loving, knowledgeable, set limits for the children, and encourage kids to solve their own problems and create a very collaborative environment. My daughter who is currently in PK-4 has greatly improved on her social skills, she's friends with everyone in her class, she's speaking spanish very well, she's even reading some in spanish. There is also a good amount of parental involvement and activities to keep the school feeling like a community. I highly recommend the program if you're interested in a bilingual program and look forward to seeing my daughter grow and learn at MV.

We have two kids at Mundo Verde and couldn't recommend it more highly. The staff takes great care to make sure the kids have what they need, and we've known more than a few to go above and beyond in terms of accommodating kids with different abilities. Our kids come from an anglophone household; after a few months, our five-year-old was speaking confidently to people in the streets in Spanish; and our three-year-old is confident in her ability to understand the fully Spanish-language pre-school program, even if she isn't yet fully understandable in English! The parents are overwhelmingly informed and active in the school community, and the location is convenient for anyone in NW DC. Of course, it'd be nice to have greenspace solely for the school's use, and a permanent location, but those things will come, just as they do for all successful charters in DC. But in the meantime, you don't have to take my word for how good this place is... just ask the immense number of people whose kids are on the waiting list.

Mundo verde is an incredible school. Our son is in his second year there and we will be thrilled to enroll our disagree there next fall. Academics are excellent. The curriculum is diverse and interesting to our son. Our kid now speaks fluent spanish. Tha'ts life changing. MV administration is well organized especially when you consider how new it is. Other parents on this site complaining about bullying have questionable motives and fortunately left the school. Parents are overwhelmingly pleased with the school.

We moved our children from a much older bilingual charter to MV this year. This difference is astonishing. After only a semester at MV it is quite evident that MV is vastly superior in target language acquisition, overall academics, classroom management and general dedication to making learning fun and interesting. It may be a new school, but it is much better run and teachers are much better.

My child has special needs and doing very well at MV. The school culture is very inclusive and the teachers and staff are responsive to the needs of my child and all the students. We are very happy that we are able to send our child to this public charter school.

I am trying not to start this review by saying that this is the worst program in DC, because I want this to be a helpful review. It is nearly four months into the school year and the staff are still unaware of my child's academic ability. In addition, we had multiple bullying incidents that have been minimized and met with denial and strict adherence to a policy of keeping her in the class (despite her discomfort and now the teacher's discomfort in dealing with us. We had just moved to DC and had such high aspirations for this school to work for our daughter. We are sad and disheartened by this experience. Moreover, we are beside ourselves trying to find a new and more permanent school for her. It has been validating talking to other parents who are experiencing the same thing. Perhaps the school will fold after a few years, like so many other charters. My hope is that they get better teaching and administrative staff, but that is probably not going to happen, since their tactic is one of closing ranks and ignoring problems.

Despite the language of community building and advanced learning techniques presented on the website, this school lacks clear leadership from the top down. The school has substandard curriculum and lacks basic resources, such as a functioning and diverse library for students. Disciplinary policy is administered inconsistently among classrooms, allowing for behavorial problems to disrupt student learning time. Additionally there is a lack of accountability at the student, teacher and administrative level that perpetuates all of the issues mentioned.
