am writing this review with deep sadness and disappointment after our family’s experience at this school.

I recognize and respect the school’s commitment to academic rigor, discipline, and high standards. Structure and accountability are important. However, in our experience, bureaucracy and rule enforcement are prioritized over human engagement, flexibility, and emotional support.

Our 16-year-old daughter has been clinically diagnosed with depression, ADHD, and social anxiety by licensed psychologists and psychiatrists. We approached the school in good faith, expecting collaboration, empathy, and a student-centered response. Instead, we encountered delays, rigidity, and a troubling lack of urgency.

It took more than 60 days to implement her documented accommodations. During that critical period, no temporary or precautionary measures were offered, despite clear medical documentation. Those two months were extremely difficult for her. A school that truly places students at the center would have acted proactively while paperwork was being finalized.

While some teachers were receptive, our experience in AP History was especially concerning. Our daughter was clearly struggling, yet during a parent meeting the teacher raised his voice and communicated in a discourteous and dismissive manner. If that was the tone used with us as parents, it is deeply concerning to imagine how a teenager with ADHD and depression may have felt in that classroom. She was socially exposed in ways that intensified her anxiety, and the support we hoped for never materialized.

The school’s motto, “Go Wolfpack,” suggests that students will never stand alone. In our experience, that promise did not align with reality. It often felt more like “Go Rules” or “Go Bureaucracy.” Procedures seemed to matter more than protecting the mental health of a vulnerable student.

Ultimately, we had to withdraw our daughter and enroll her in online classes — a path several of her friends had already taken, which suggests this is not an isolated situation. She could no longer endure the environment, particularly in that history class.

I hope this serves as constructive feedback. The school maintains strong academic expectations, but it urgently needs to strengthen its human-centered approach — especially when supporting students facing mental health challenges.

No child should feel alone in a place that promises they never will be.

As a parent, I have been disappointed with the overall leadership and support provided at this school. The administration demonstrates a noticeable lack of care and concern for students’ individual needs, and communication between some teachers and families is inconsistent at best. When issues arise, there is little willingness from staff to work collaboratively with parents or to consider reasonable solutions that would benefit the student. In particular, the refusal to allow students to switch to a teacher who may be a better fit shows a disregard for student success and well-being. Every child learns differently, and schools should prioritize fostering an environment where students feel supported and able to succeed. Unfortunately, this has not been our experience.

I strongly urge the administration to reevaluate its priorities and begin putting students first by improving communication, offering real support, and providing flexibility to meet individual needs. Until meaningful changes are made, I would caution other families to carefully consider whether this school can truly provide the supportive environment their child deserves.

This school is one of the best in academic terms because it has the best teachers, but also one of the worst I have seen in how the staff treat students and their parents. I had problems there and although my mother sent several emails the principal never responded, he even said he had seen all the emails but I guess he just didn't want to answer and help me. When my mother went to talk to him personally, he was not gentle at all and he even made comments about my Hispanic nationality and my mother not being able to speak English. It would be a better school choice if the principal was kinder and willing to help students and their parents.

This school is very different from what it used to be! As a dedicated magnet for all advanced studies, the entire atmosphere is one of positive enthusiastic learning. Students learn a lot, but have a great time doing it. I encourage everyone to take a tour to check it out.

Wolfson has provided a great learning environment for our child. He is in the IB Program and is being pushed academically while also providing opportunities for leadership roles, clubs and athletics.
The majority of the teachers are involved with the students and are up to the challenge of teaching high academic students.
I have to believe that the stats this site is providing are out dated. Wolfson became an IB school 4 years ago and all of the students have to apply and meet certain requirements to attend. I hope that greatschools.org will work with the school to provide the correct information.

The principle and faculty don’t have great leadership. They are there for the wrong reasons.

Posted: January 10, 2019

They do not do enough to protect children with learning disabilities especially kids with autism.

Let me start off by saying wolfson has been a great school for me. I have been able to do things such as cheerlead and have a much closer relationship to my peers and teachers than at any other school would have offered. The down side is many of my peers who are not in the IB program or who are not excelling are not getting the same treatment I am. I came from a very good middle school and was apart of a big group of kids who decided to go to wolfson from that middle school. Kids from my middle school get treated a lot better than the kids who are from the neighborhood or kids who came from a not as advanced middle school. They don’t treat their students equally. The juniors and seniors who are kids from around the neighborhood are not being helped. In fact the school tells incoming freshmen that they will be out soon so there is no need to worry about them. They separate us from them and I don’t see that as fair at all. In all wolfson has been a good fit for me just keep in mind that they do not treat everyone equally.

This is an IB/AP Program on the rise. The administration and staff are dedicated to creating a highly balanced yet academically rigorous experience for their students. Their efforts are further supported by a groundswell of parent and community support and involvement. This is a fantastic high school option for students and parents looking for an authentic american high school experience with an emphasis on academic achievement.

Samuel Wolfson SAS is moving in a very positive direction. Ratings on this site do not take into account the transition to a dedicated magnet for IB and AP classes that’s happening. The school will be fully transitioned in the 2019-2020 school year.

Wolfson is now a dedicated magnet school for advanced studies and the International Baccalaureate diploma program, for all students in the 9th and 10th grade classes. This transition is already showing great results for the academic success of the students. Principal Begley took over in January 2017 and is doing a great job with helping Wolfson be competitive with the academic success of Stanton. The students also have many opportunities to play sports and be involved with extra curricular activities. Parental involvement in the school has also increased since it became a dedicated magnet. As a parent of a 9th grader, I can honestly say the future is extremely bright for the students at Wolfson and their families!

I haven't seen hardly any signs of leadership at this school. it's more like they are treating as their slaves or robots then leaders. i don't feel like a leader there. When I go there it's just listening to what you have to do and then do the work. I feel like a prisoner. I love learning. School is supposed to be about learning. I'm not learning anything. I'm just being assigned work. And I thought grades were supposed to represent how smart you are or how much you were learning. All I'm seeing is that our grades represent how much work we are getting done i our classes. It's not about seeing how much I'm learning. It's about seeing if I could get the work done. And I don't think that's right. I'm not just talking about Wolfson though. I'm talking about the majority of schools.

They give a ton of work , give more work than they actually teach anything. But they also work very hard and give you help , advice and tutoring when you need it.

Posted: October 9, 2016

Complicated and way too much in my opinion, but it's probably just my fault for choosing to go to an advanced school and join the IB program knowing I am a procrastinator.

I am a Freshman at this school and so far in my opinion , the teachers are good and hard working , the students and the staff. I like the IB program and how this school prepares you for college , but I don't really feel like this school is doing anything good for me but loading me up with tons of schoolwork , that in my opinion is unnecessary. I don't see how it will help me in the future if I'm planning on becoming a movie editor. But other than that, the teachers help those who need it , as well as the staff and I feel that the kids there get along pretty well except for a few issues or arguments here and there. If you are a procrastinator like me or you just plain don't like doing any schoolwork , you'll have a very hard time at this school like I am having right now. I'm typing this review right now while I'm suppose to be writing 4 essays,2 science projects, art project, 3+ reading assignments and more, all due before the end of this week. But this is all my fault for being a procrastinator. The way this school affects you all depends on what kind of person you are.

Being a former Alumni student c/o 14 my overall experience with the staff, faculty, and etc. Were pleasant. Many opportunities and club's to get you ready for college. The courses here were well taught out and discipline was in full effect. I never regret my enrollment here I have learned a lot from this school about how life and college is going to be like. Glad they prepared me. This school doesn't shield you from The world but teaches you of the world due to it's diverse people it contains from the bad to the good. The worst to the Best. Do your best and you will get what you've earned these teachers do not tolerate the reluctant students they tolerate the people that want to learn. And that's how the real world is. Thanks WOLFSON!!

I attended Wolfson my junior year in 2012, but chose to finish high school elsewhere. I didn't feel challenged enough academically at Wolfson. Although I felt like most of my teachers taught me well; a few were downright terrible. I remember one of my teachers not grading any of my work until right before the semester ended; she was scrambling to get everyone's work graded! With students attending from all over the city, Wolfson was very diverse. A large percentage of the students were foreign. However, the downfall of this was that the students hung out in cliques/with their own demographics, so it was hard at first to make friends. Wolfson had some really creative/intelligent students. One thing I noticed was that I never had seen anyone being bullied at Wolfson; but of course I ve seen plenty of fights here. I never had any problems with guidance. Students in the finance academy operated a VyStar bank branch, so you could withdraw/deposit money during lunch! While Wolfson was nowhere near perfect when I attended, I think Wolfson is great if you hang with the right crowd and apply yourself.

Well almost a month into the year and my son loves it!! Teachers are great and very helpful. I have rerad some things on here that really sccared me about this school but I've got to say maybe some of you just need to look at your kids and how you parent them maybe some of the isuess you complain about wouldn't have happened. If you have a prob with this school its more than likely its because the school won't put up with your unruly child and they are there to teach not babysit.

This is my sons first year at wolfson and he hates it. I tried to convince him that it might not be so bad of a school, but I'm seeing otherwise. The school is ghetto, some of the students needs discipline, the teachers are very hard on the students. My son wasn't in school two weeks and he started receiving F's. He's always excelled in other Schools. I'm really worried for him.

Wolfson is the worst school that I have ever had to deal with. My grandson's guidance counselor would not return my phone calls. It was only after I said that I would come to Wolfson and sit and wait until she would talk with me that I got her on the phone. There is no discipline and the teachers can not teach their classes for the disruption of certain groups. When these certain people are sent to the office, they just return the next day back to class. Those who want to learn can not because of the lack of respect from certain groups and the fact the hands of the teachers are tied to do anything with them. In my day this would not be tolerated and respect was expected by all. I am so glad that my grandson is out of this school. I feel sorry for those left and their parents.

I came here last year (10-11) from VA, and this school was a big change, however I like it. The school isn't really a bad school, but by no means is it a good school either. I've heard A LOT worse about the other high schools in Jax. I've heard on several occasions that the school has improved academically and disciplinary. With that being said, I still feel like I'm not getting challenged enough academically. Most of my teachers care about the students, the others not so much. Teachers seemed burnt out and somewhat scared to discipline their students, I would be too though. The administration and security are a joke. At first, they only enforced the rules when the school board officials are here. They are tightening down a lot though. Honestly, like any other teenager, I've grown accustom to the enjoy the "freedom" of doing what I please. I love the diverse student body. Overall I give Wolfson a 3/5. Proud to be part of the Wolfpack.

this school is amazing! the staff is very friendly, the foreigners are also friendly. i am in here as a freshman and i hope to be here for 3 and a half more!

I attended Wolfson for a short period of time. I graduated in three years and I will admit there are some teachers that don't give a care about how the students do, but there are a lot of them that if the student shows that they are trying they will help. You have to help yourself before others can help. I had an amazing Dean that I had from freshman year till I graduated, he followed me from Forrest or so I'd like to say. He is very dedicated to the students he makes sure the kids are on track as best he can and tries to get them to see that in life they will need everything
