Im going into my third year at mayport and as far as their teaching system for advanced kids its great however, the school ignores and pushes aside multiple things like teacher putting their hands on kids and bullying. the school also promised a surf club and coastal sciences programs. in 6th grade i had half a semester of coastal science but that is the only class i have had involving that and if I'm being honest i cant remember a single thing i learned. If students get put with good teachers and they find a good friend group mayport can be great otherwise the bullying of students and the non communication of teachers is very bad.

I have had two students who have attended Mayport and have had wonderful middle school experiences. The administration is outstanding! The teachers are dedicated and invested in their students. Mayport is a unique school that not only has a large military family population (located near a Naval base), but also the emphasis on coastal stewardship. The coastal sciences magnet program has really allowed students who desire to take those courses to engage in hands-on learning. There are a variety of clubs, sports, and student activities available to students. Mayport excels at providing the right balance of structure and independence as students are transitioning from elementary school and moving towards high school. The faculty takes a keen interest in the overall well-being of their students and families. They are approachable, and make every effort to meet the individual needs of each child. If any safety or bullying situation occurs, parents are notified and instances are handled swiftly. Communication from the school is weekly, with updates & reminders. Parents are able to be involved with SAC and PTA. The impact this school & faculty have had on my children has been monumental not only in their academic careers but also in their social/emotional/character development. We are proud to be a Shark family!

Our family has had a great experience at Mayport Coastal Sciences Middle School. It was apparent to us on day one how invested the teachers and staff are in caring for and teaching these students. The staff there work hard to create a great learning environment and unique opportunities through clubs, in-class projects, and community involvement. The hands-on responsibilities of caring for and understanding the marine life provide them with not only a rich learning environment but, real-life skills. From their academics to extracurricular opportunities, Mayport is a great environment that is welcoming and supportive. I've seen first-hand the dedication of the teachers and staff there to ensure a positive and enriching environment.

My son has an Autism label and he is gifted. He was bullied nearly everyday of his 8th grade year. I wished I continued to homeschool but I thought it was a good idea for him to have positive social interactions with his peers to help with his language impairment. Huge mistake! He was not even accommodated for his gifted abilities. Please be mindful, if you have a student with a language deficit or a disability DCPS does not care about the emotional and mental well being of your student. They dont care if your student is harassed and mistreated. To them bullying is just kids being kids! Im still helping him understand that because he is different and others put him down for those differences that he cant believe he is all the mean things the other students called him. Its not easy because hes already a tender child but its just really sad how we entrust adults to help us parents to educate our students and help them to be decent adults. These students need a well rounded experience. We need trained educated teachers who understand that instead of teachers with certifications! DCPS doesnt encourage inclusion of all backgrounds nor do they take mental health seriously. I say if you have a student with a learning disability PLEASE DO NOT SEND THEM TO ANY OF THESE DCPS !!!

My experience at this school is really good teachers push you to get good grades and make sure if your bulled or anything happens they will help you until you fell better and the clubs are amazing I say ever one should send their kids here.

We love this school!! It's a rare gem at the beach. The opportunities offered here can not be found anywhere else.

If the "review" I just read was in regards to the incident I witnessed in the office earlier in the week I found it very disheartening. Although I am not aware of the circumstances, I found it appalling the way the parent was treated by the Maypot employee. If the parent was treated in such a manner in front of other parents, how are these children being treated. behind closed doors? This is my chids last year at MCSM and I don't recall ever seeing this older woman before.

Love this school, however the new (2014-2015) Dean of Students leaves little to be desired. If your looking for help, understanding or compassion with a problem, avoid her at all costs, other than that, love it!

Totally awesome. Staff is above any I've seen. I have enjoyed my child going here.

I have visited Mayport Middle School several times this year in order to better understand its approach to teaching as a Coastal Science Magnet School. Through my conversations with staff and my observations of student engagement, I have found it to be a wonderful learning facility. It is disheartening that its perception by others is outdated because many in our community are missing out on a real gem !

Mayport Middle is a amazing school to work with. The teachers are preparing students with real world scientific research experience. Students will be prepared for high school and, more importantly, beyond.

Great school with a new and interesting vision. One of very few schools looking at the Maritime sector from both a business and an ecological view.

Mayport Coastal Science Middle School is outstanding because of the teachers & their positive attitudes that help students explore, learn and get involved in their school & neighborhood. This academic year witnessed a large growth of students choosing to come to Mayport MS because of it's coastal science program. What I like is the "hands on" approach that permeates the school & immerses the students in a real world education. The students take great pride in working on projects that give back to their community. Ongoing projects: an aquaculture "business" raising marketable fish; raising dune vegetation for transplanting in a Jacksonville Park on the Atlantic Ocean; producing, writing, researching, editing and daily broadcasting of school related videos in-house & on the internet; maintaining and enhancing an on-campus nature trail that circles the school and it's pond. What I am hoping for is more people & businesses to recognize the talent & quality of the education available at Mayport Coastal Science Middle School - Atlantic Bch, FL. I urge citizens to visit the various on-campus events showcasing the talent and "cool" things the students are learning. Go Sharks !!!!

I have been associated with Mayport Coastal Sciences Middle School for seven years and I can honestly this is a family and student centered school. It is a richly diverse neighborhood school with a magnet theme. The administrators and staff are committed to making the student's middle school experience safe and academically challenging. The acceleration courses have prepared many of the students for acceptance into the high school AICE, IB, and AVID programs.

The best choice I have ever made in regards to my son's education. The coastal science magnet is outstanding. The teachers are dedicated and go above and beyond. The administrative is very supportive and they are truly involved in leading by example. My son has thrived at Mayport Middle School and I am very grateful.

The magnet program is phenomenal. We do not live at the beach but selected this school for its magnet program and are very happy with our decision. They have worked hard to make this school the success it has today. The teachers care about student s success and will go the extra mile to offer tutoring, if needed. They have extracurricular programs that fit with the magnet concept. We are very happy with this school.

Mayport Middle School is a great school. The Coastal Sciences Magnet program is good for being so new. Middle School is a difficult age to have kids focused on their studies instead of peer pressure and socializing. We had a great experience with teacher and parent communication.

I grew up in Mayport then we moved in town. My daughter had the wonderful opportunity of being able to attend the magnet school this year for 6th grade. Of all of the middle schools in Jacksonville, this one is one of the best. My daughter is an average student but was struggling in math during elementary years. She gained confidence and had such wonderfully supportive teachers at Mayport. She enjoyed the double science classes, the facilities are unique and "fun", I like that the 8th graders are segregated to another part of the school. The Shark Bite summer program was an excellent introduction to middle school for 6th graders and I highly encourage them to attend. There are several afterschool programs for enrichment, team sports, and parent involvement opportunities. If you live in Jacksonville or the surrounding area you should always expect "diversity" so no one should be commenting negatively on that. It is what it is in that respect, but this school seems to be very well rounded and has a strong disciplinary program for those who need it. We lived in Arlington and the bus transportation available was a nice bonus although we had some bus "issues". Something to work on.

my daughter went there for 6th grade to the coastal science magnate. we got her class schedule and there were coastal science classes on the schedule. then somehow they switched her classes so instead of coastal science classes for the year, she was stuck in "process skills" with children from all ages (some high school age due to failing so much) where she had to endure children fighting around her and using less than good language. The class mostly involved watching movies and playing with legos and clay. She took no coastal science classes. In other classes there was a pre and a post test for each chapter of the book. the pretest was closed book, the post test, open book so the kids would fail the pre and get a high grade on the post. I am assuming this was to boost grades to show how good the teachers were teaching. I also had to call the police for being threatened by another students mother in the office. I am sure there are great things to be said about this school, but i cannot think of any. When we talked to the process skills teacher about the fighting etc. she told us that there was nothing she could do. we pulled her out of the magnate program.

my son is about to enter the 8th grade at mayport. we have been very pleased with the teachers, administration and curriculum at Mayport. He has been in advanced classes, which is a real PLUS. The size of the school was the main draw for me (much smaller than our neighborhood school) and then the coastal science magnet portion made it a total package. My son has been allowed to truly develop his personality as the teachers know the students as individuals and not just a number in the classroom!

I love Mayport Middle, it's very diverse and the environment is safe. My son was there for 2 years and only left because I received new orders. He was in advanced classes and the curriculum is very challenging, and there's a lot of activities after school.
