Terrible. This school is a for profit and they make that VERY clear in the lack of respect for the student and teachers needs. The car line is extremely dangerous and they have done nothing to remedy that situation. I have several friends and extended family that have experienced bullying incidents that are not addressed as well as the "bully" not being reprimanded at all. This school is very corporate and they care more about the bottom line than the faculty, students and staff. I would not recommend.

I am a graduating 8th Grader from this school. I have only been at this school for two years, but I feel like I have grown a lot. The geometry and biology teacher are phenomenal, and the eighth grade class of 2026 earned a 100% pass rate on both the Geometry and Biology EOC. While the elective choices are somewhat lacking, the school does a good job of making sure the athletics do fairly well. The school needs to approve on their ability to help students who may be struggling, whether that's with academics or mental health.

My daughter has been in this school for 5 years and my son 3 years and every year this school has made it known that its us against them. From staff clapping at parents being spoken to by police about waiting to pick up their kids in the horrible car line system they set up, to making it difficult just to pick up your kids if they are not in a traditional one house home . This school does not care about its students and only cares about testing and making everything convenient for them . Its sad because the first two years the school was great. Since the new building open its gone downhill. Very disappointing.

This school is a horrible environment for a child's growing mind. As a student that went here from kindergarten to the end of middle school, I can freely state that this school seriously destroys the expectations that a charter school sets. From peers, I've heard of the unfair punishments given to a student. One elementary student got a detention for punching a pillow, which is very harsh for "damaging" an item known for its softness and ability to take a hit. Many of the teachers here act on impulse, punishing large groups of students for the behavior of a couple. No teacher can hold a position here either. After 2022, teachers have been flying in and out every single year. This turnover rate is already disappointing for a school that has been rated highly from the Floridian government. The horde of assignments is also another major problem. I've maintained an A average at this school, but this has only been caused by several nights staying up to complete assignments WITH the time given in class. I've had several classes that restrict students of class time, forcing students to work at home AND disrespecting the activities a student may do out of school. Along with this, many teachers that have had a position here for a long time make many complaints. This school also utilizes a horrible volunteer hour system. For the school year of 2024-2025, parents had to achieve 20 hours, yet were barely provided opportunities to achieve this. Most of these volunteer hours had to come from the purchases and donations you have to make, WHICH in turn, creates tension on the balance of the parent. As an 8th grade student from 2024-2025, there are still many problems with the school. The funding the school receives from the high test scores are put to waste. The bathrooms in both floors of the school lack privacy for the boys, even missing a divider between urinals for pubescent boys that struggle to regulate their behavior. This school also attempts to moderate the behavior of students out of school "for their safety." This is not an ideal move when fights have been made several times in one year, outlining the teacher's inability to regulate students. Many students are also bullied at the school, which entirely go under the radar of many teachers, DESPITE the obvious signs provided in school. Student behaviors are also not managed well. I've seen my peers showing signs of depression and possibly suicidal thoughts, yet no effort was made to even see if they were alright.

Roxanne mcqueen Haag IA associated with thus school. She IS NOT fit to be around children. Just check out the Facebook page The 812. Scroll down to the Friday posts with the scores. She has 2 profiles. The other is MH RH. She is belittling kids. She has hate in her heart and I would not want someone who talks and thinks like her around my children!

I am a 8th grader at Winthrop Middle School. The students at this school are not very well behaved. They talk about stealing from the Publix and make racist remarks. Some of the teachers just provide packets and don't provide hands on learning. This year for Biology I have Ms. Brown and she is very nice. She is an excellent example for what a teacher should be like. Also, the bad students tend to disrupt the class and slow down our progress of learning. I would not recommend this school. Although my experience with tests came out positive some of the other students struggle with passing classes.

I would not recommend this schedule because I was severely bullied here. At school and out of school. I believe the teachers here could care less about their students wellbeing. I am glad to be leaving this school. It worsened my anxiety. I also believe racism is a major problem here. Because it is a predominantly white school, I think people who aren't white could become targets of bullying. I mean.. just ask anyone at the school. Teachers fear the students. I've watched students disrespect their teachers(usually the nice ones too..) STRAIGHT up to their face. I'm not going to lie I have received a great education here. The treatment and everything else you deal with is truly not worth the damage. I miss the person I was before I came to this school. I had to change my personality to adjust to a school like this.. 3/10 for this school. This school drained me. Now I see the world in black and white instead of shades of gray.

This school is extremely disorganized! My child was assigned classes and then they switched the entire schedule, including homeroom, 3 weeks later. When notified the school, they stated this is normal procedure for the beginning of the school year because the classes are unbalanced. However, if they were organized with assigning classes and student registrations, they should have been prepared for this prior to school starting. This shows lack of planning and care towards the students.
The make parents purchase agenda books as a hall pass. Why can't the classrooms just have a hall pass for the students to use. These are only a few things experienced this year. If public schools can get their students assigned to classes and so forth prior to the first day, I do not see why Winthrop cannot.
5th grade ceremony's are a joke. Public schools had a legit ceremony and all Winthrop did was a cheesy zoom session where the quality was horrible and you hear parents talk the entire time. They won't receive a diploma, just a little award.

The Elementary school leadership & staff are great but the middle school has significant concerns. In my experience with the school the Middle school administrators/leadership has a tendency to wrongly accuse students of behavioral issues and gaslight students -making them doubt or second guess themselves without actually speaking to the students. The "tutoring" consists of an online computer based class and the teachers do not help students understand what they are struggling with. So unless you have a straight A student your child will likely fall behind and you will need to obtain a professional tutor outside of the school. The are very limited athletic opportunities other than clubs which are generally run by class room teachers or parent volunteers. This provides no sense of comradery, determination, teamwork or student motivation. Both elementary & middle schools bribe the parents with volunteer hours if they provide a 5 start rating instead of giving honest opinions.

We have had two teachers this year, and were worried about the switch since the first teacher was well established, but it's been great. The new teacher has been a nice surprise and brought some new dynamics, games and little routines to the classroom that our daughter tells us about excitedly after school. Both our teachers this year have been really responsive on email, always responding right away. Also, both kept firm control of the classroom and didn't let anything get out of control (our daughter reports).

Winthrop Charter is an excellent school. The teachers truly show that they care about their students. They care not only about educating their students but the students themselves and their individual needs. They practice hygiene safety as well as student safety. They prepare the students ahead in case of a real emergency. I am very pleased and grateful to have a child there. They are teaching him to soar as a student and an individual.

My daughter has been a student at Winthrop Charter since Kindergarten and she is now in 2nd grade. We have had nothing but great experiences with this school. The teachers are all very attentive to the success of their students. I am very proud of how great the school adjusted to mobile learning through this pandemic. It made the transition a tad bit easier on us at home.

My child started Kindergarten here and is now in 7th grade. Through the years, he has had wonderful and caring teachers. He loves this school and any issues that came along was swiftly addressed.
The pandemic caused minor hiccups in his education at first, but the teachers guided the students well.

My daughters are in their final semester of 8th grade and have been at WCS since kindergarten. It is a bittersweet time because we so love our school and all the wonderful people who make it a great place to learn. At the same time, we know that the wonderful teachers have prepared our daughters well to succeed in high school and cannot wait to see all that they will achieve. I believe that the smaller school size plus the requirement that families actively volunteer at the school contributes to the tight-knit feel at the school. Wonderful things happen when young children witness adults giving of their time for the good of their school; it models a sense of community and creates a culture of dedication to and caring for others. Although the pandemic has created a very different school experience this year, our teachers have been amazingly adaptive and even more committed to providing the best possible learning environment to their students... even from a distance. If you are a parent who wants your child to be challenged academically in a caring and supportive environment look no further than WCS.

I appreciate the school philosophy. My daughters have gone to this school since the school opened and with the exception of some minor concerns and growing pains, the school has provided solid education for my children. The school is a uniform school and I appreciate the uniforms but wish there was some flexibility on socks and shoes to allow for some individuality. I have had wonderful experiences with many of the teachers as they seem to care for the student personally and not just as a number.

It is my kiddos first year in school (K) and so far he loves it! I like that the teachers and parents are well connected and responsive, you can get in touch any time. I also like the community drive toward raising funds to have fun activities for the kids and the surrounding community. In can get a little hectic in the mornings with drop offs and for afternoon pickup since there are no school buses, but they get through the line very fast and expediently. I feel safe leaving my little one there and he has seemed to learn more here at WCS than he did at his previous school.

Both my children ages 7 and 11 attend Winthrop Charter School. When i ask them how their day was they tell me that it was good and then they proceed to tell me what they learned about in school. All the other kids there are very diverse and my kids always are telling me how much they miss going to school. Even if the classes are online their grades have managed to stay okay. The only thing i have to say is about the lack of communication between kids. If students are in school then they are talking to their classmates during lunchtime and recess. Now they are always expected to stay on mute and pay attention to the teacher. I think that the kids should have just even a little chance to talk to each other. I would totally recommend this school to any parent.

I feel they actually do care about the students! Parents are involved, that is not a common aspect (as I have learned). I highly recommend this school.

In the age of Covid-19, I was skeptical of the schools ability to monitor and manage any potential outbreaks amongst the students and staff. Now, four months into the school year, I find that they have done a wonderful job.
Likewise, the teachers have done an exceptional job while transitioning into dual instruction. My child does not lack in her instruction time as her teacher has ensured that all of her students are well tended to and do not fall behind.
I am grateful for the faculty and staff that are continuing to go above and beyond to ensure a bright future for our children.

My experience with the school has been great so far. All the teachers my child has had since starting, have been good. The staff have always been friendly and helpful.
In a normal school year the school provided a variety of after school activities, that my child loved going to and trying out. Unfortunately, this year my child has been doing distant learning all year and is missing being physically at Winthrop. The teachers are doing an awesome job teaching in their distant learning classes and they've been great keeping me updated and responding to me.

My son is now 13 and attended Winthrop from 5th grade through 8th. After his 5th grade year he was scoring higher on all standardized tests. The last time he tested he was a 4 in math and a 5 in reading. Winthrop does a nice job ensuring the kids are prepared to move to the next grade and the kids understand what they are doing. Obviously test scores are not the most important thing, its an easy measurable way to watch his progress. The teachers are a tad strict, my son needs that. They were always very fair. He is moving on to high school and were thankful for the experience. The only thing we felt a tad disappointed with was not being accepted into the National Junior Honor Society. Being that all 4 quarters he received all as and one b he was disappointed. The feedback was hes slightly immature and had 3 infractions through the year. Its a tough message and the expectation feels like perfection. This is the only reason we are not choosing to remain in Winthrop through high school, in case the available spots for the National Honor Society are limited due to Winthrop being smaller.

I think the teachers are what makes this school great. Ms. Fechtman is awesome and always willing to help and explain things even to us parents. I am truly grateful for her this year. Mrs. Silvers and Mrs. Clifford are also amazing. Always on top of things and willing to go outside the box to assist.

My family has been at Winthrop since Kindergarten and are now in the middle school. We have had nothing but great things to say about the teachers and the learning environment that Winthrop provides. During Covid, Winthrop handled everything with concern for student stafety as well as ensuring they are still getting a sound education. We are so happy to be apart of this great learning community!

My daughter has been at Winthrop Charter since Kindergarten, she is now in 2nd grade. We have had nothing but pleasant experiences since the beginning. Her teachers have been attentive and very helpful. Especially through this pandemic, I find it pretty great that all the teachers are doing their absolute best to make sure the children are still learning and enjoying it as well.

I do mobile learning this symester, and it is an extraordinary experience for me and my 3 boys With the new safety issued requirements, I feel safe learning on line and the teachers are doing such a great job balancing face to face and mobile learning. The work can be very challenging, but you feel very much apart of the classroom and the teachers get the students involved and to participate equally as if they were physically there.

The faculty are very well prepared and organized. I was pleasantly surprised with their immediate and detailed way of handling the pandemic that hit early in the year. They constantly push out information and make sure parents are kept informed. The teachers all seem really passionate about what they do and about the kids which is extremely important to us. They are pretty easy to get in contact with and have been very accommodating.
Winthrop truly does put an effort into making students & parents feel like they are a part of the community. They also make an effort to help the community and give opportunities for the families to be involved and help in community service. Very well-rounded :)

My experience at Winthrop Charter school has been amazing! We are a family of five and our oldest son is in Mrs. Samples Kindergarten class. We look forward to the day when he will be able to attend class in person. Mrs. Samples has been extremely inclusive with her virtual students in the classroom via streaming. She is professional, caring and I am sure your staff is honored to have her as a teacher.

I'm a parent to former and current Winthrop students. I've had kids at Winthrop for over 8 years. We love the school. They're always attentive to my children's needs. Administration and teachers communicate well with the parents. My kids also excell in their learning environment. This year has been a new learning experience due to the pandemic. Winthrop has gone above and beyond making sure all the students and staff are safe. I would 100% recommend Winthrop to anyone looking for a public school alternative for their child.

The classroom environment, the culture, responsibility, work ethic and attention to detail that is bestowed upon my child is top notch. My daughter yearns for school and coming home and sharing what she has learned daily. I look forward to her continued growth and school Experiences at Winthrop Charter School.

My son is in kindergarten and was having a tough time integrating into a school that focused on education rather than play (daycare-VPK). His teacher took the time to email us is daily, on top of the notes in the agenda book, and let us know what activities transpired throughout the day. She really took the time to help us make sure that he received the help he needed to have a positive experience at school.

My child has been attending this school for almost 3 years. We have lived every minute of it. From day one, we have always felt informed, welcomed, and most of all happy. My daughter has loved all of her teachers and I can tell that they truly care about their students. This particular year brought many challenges in the reopening of schools. However, I feel like Winthrop is doing an excellent job at trying to keep everyone safe and healthy. I brag about how my childs school has a challenging yet age appropriate curriculum, higher standards, and smaller class sizes. We cannot wait for our son to start next year so that he too can get the wonderful Winthrop experience.

Education curriculum majorly focus on practical, analytical way of approach which is very good. Technology is another aspect where it is building platform for kids to adapt fast for apps they are learning which helps them grow continuous and being focused. Thank you Winthrop Teachers and faulty .

Thus far we could not be happier; the teachers are absolutely amazing and very easy to communicate to about any academic issues that need to be addressed. They definitely go the extra mile to ensure my boys are getting the best educational experience as possible (as one of my boys does have some learning curves) while still making it a fun environment to learn in. The other staff I have come into brief contact with is just as friendly and outgoing. Everyone is always very positive!

My child is attending this school for the second year. So far, no public schools around my place has a better review or even close to this school rating. There is one thing you should know, which is you will need to either do volunteer works for school during school hrs ( only sometimes not during school hrs) for 20 hrs (1st child. Any additional child will be added 10 more hrs) or you can donate school supplies through out school year(every about $10 will be equivalent to 1 volunteer hr).

Winthrop has been a great school for my children, and I rate them a 10/10! It is a dramatic difference from the public school they used to attend. The leadership here is very transparent and communicates consistently. The teachers do the same, and are always available to discuss any concerns. Through this unprecedented time, the entire school has done a great job on health safety measures as well. Appreciate the partnership this school fosters.

Free tutoring, small class sizes, and small groups per grade level for development and enhancement.
Posted: November 18, 2020
Great leadership begins at the top. The principal holds the entire learning community to a standard that he upholds himself and makes everyone accountable (students, parents, and staff).
Posted: November 18, 2020
Zero tolerance for bullying. All students are treated on one accord. Discipline and award system enhances accountability and fairness.
Posted: November 18, 2020
Teachers curtail their curriculum to the needs of all students within the classroom. In addition, small group style learning occurs throughout the grade developing students at all levels.
Posted: November 18, 2020
Homework reinforces material learned in school. Enough to be effective, but not overwhelming.
Posted: November 18, 2020
My experience has been amazing for over eight years. The school lays a foundation that lasts a lifetime. My third child will attend the school next year. The curriculum is a grade higher than schools within the county. When entering high school, kids are placed in advanced classes.

This is our girls first year here and so far we have had a wonderful experience. Between mobile and face-to-face learning, some things have been challenging but staff has been very understanding during the pandemic. I love the way all the teachers all the way up to the principal respond to their emails no matter what and keep us up to date with everything going on in the classroom and events taking place around the school. I also like how organized the student pick up and drop off is organized.

We have three children that have been to this school. My son started in 4th grade (2012) and went through middle school and ultimately had to go to a public school (there wasn't a charter high school at the time).
We now have a daughter who started in kindergarten and is now in 5th grade and also our youngest daughter who just started kindergarten this year.
As you can see, we have been extremely happy with the overall education our children have received and continue to receive. My son graduated high school with honors and I attribute that to the education he received from this school.
The leadership has been consistent with Principal Terry Johnson leading the way since we have been at the school. The teachers genuinely care about their students and the communication has been excellent. I know this year has been challenging due to COVID but I appreciate the thoughtfulness and careful planning the administration and teachers have put in to ensure our children still continue to receive an excellent education while also staying safe and healthly. My daughters have been going in-person since school has started and we have not had any issues or concerns.
Thank you for all you do and continue to do! I strongly recommend this school to anyone who has considered this school.

Nice to know what kind of school Winthrop really is. I got a call from the Principal, wondering if my child should be going there. He was accepted months ago. They read his IEP, and Dra letter (he does have ADHD). I was informed that if he has issues they do not have or be willing to provide resources for him and with a no tolerance policy he would be withdrawn from there. This is my 5 year old son supposed to be starting kindergarten, but I was encouraged to not bring him to Winthrop. I am keeping this clean and honest, but discrimination is not right on any level.
An educational institution turning a kid away without ever meeting him or him stepping foot on campus is deplorable. Winthrop doesnt deserve my son.

ZERO STARS Worst education experience ever. Principal Terry Johnson was unresponsive and apathetic at best to our requests and needs. The classrooms and lunches are out of control - no order. Because there's only one permanent staff member on lunches (the rest are volunteers - I volunteered and saw this first hand) kids bully each other and there is no accountability. Teachers don't want to be bothered either because it's their lunch break. Kids with special needs are not given the attention they deserve. Net net - if your kid is cookie cutter they'll do fine here. If your kids need a little extra TLC or special attention - this might not be a good choice. Why? Winthrop doesn't have to go the extra mile with your kids. There's 100 other kids that want to get in here because parents think because there's a uniform it makes it a better education. It's not. My kid got straight A's at Winthrop and As and Bs in public school which tells me the content was easier at Winthrop. Also, my kid was not a behavior issue before she came here. I had to be a helicopter Mom to fight for her for the three months that she was there. Her teacher used negative reinforcement and there was absolutely no order in in her classroom. I pulled her out of Winthrop and put her back into Symmes and we have not had one issue since making the change. Ironic how at Symmes she was a model citizen for kindergarden and when I put her back in the second half of first grade. And a behavior issue at Winthrop for 3 months. Kids are a product of their environment and Winthrop was a negative experience for us. To me - Winthrop is a business first, school second. Kids are dont come first.

Forcing a child to sit next to their attacker the very next school day is how this school deals with bullying.
Posted: April 11, 2017
WRONG!!!! They don't do anything to help children that need their help the most. The ESE director is great but she is the only one who cares. The rest are horrible.
Posted: April 11, 2017
Worthless. They don't do anything. Don't answer emails, calls, requests for conferences. Nothing.
Posted: April 11, 2017
They don't care about anything except getting that extra dollar in their pockets and their A rating. Kids have been beat up and bullied and are forced to sit next to their bully the next day.
Posted: April 11, 2017
They aren't even qualified to be teachers. One was a back up dancer, another a secretary and another the PTA lady.
Posted: April 11, 2017
They don't allow kids homework in MS. Everything has to be done in class and if they don't finish it, you have to get them there on Saturday or earlier in the morning. Elementary school is given way too much work.
Posted: April 11, 2017
The school doesn't care about anything but its "A" rating. The teachers are horrible. 9 out of 10 of them aren't even real teachers. The only people who are good are the office staff and administrators. Principal and VP doesn't care about anything and refuses to get involved. You complain about a teacher and they say they know they are horrible but not to worry because they wont be there next year. That doesn't help my failing child this year!!! Everything is about money. Nothing is free or even cheap for that matter. Don't waste your time here. Classes are larger than public schools and teachers are less qualified. One day you are a secretary and the next day you are a teacher. CRAZY!!!!!

They sent an offer to attend via email! I call and I was informed the computer sent out false offers! Very disappointing ! This should not happen! Maybe an example of their lack of organization and leadership!

My son has just completed his 8th grade year. He had attended since fourth grade. I am happy to say that he will be going on to high school fully prepared and has been accepted into a prestigious high school program. His teachers have always been easy to communicate with and helpful when in need.

This school is a complete and utter nightmare to any teenager/preteen. Almost all of the "good" reviews of this school are posted by elementary school parents, not middle school parents. The elementary school is very good, and deserves the reviews given, but the middle school is horrible. As an 8th grade student who came in during 5th grade receiving ALL A's, i was very happy in elementary school. As I entered 6th grade, I noticed a decline in my work ethic. By 7th grade, there were 7 civics substitutes who they seem to have found on craigslist, 3 E.L.A subs, and they were all careless and inconsiderate. Now in my 8th grade year, depression, stress, and anxiety have taken over my life. the teachers are horrible, and most staff is EXTREMELY rude. I would NOT, under any circumstances, recommend this school. I'd rather go to McLane or Guinta than this school.
Posted: April 21, 2016
Very unprofessional staff work at this school. I advise all parents considering this school to stay far away from it. If you have a child entering kindergarten and you want to be apart of the experience, CHOOSE ANOTHER SCHOOL. You will only be invited into the school the first day then the rest of the school year you have to leave them at the door of the cafeteria. You WILL NOT be allowed back in the school at ALL! Kids scream in the mornings and look distress in the afternoon. Choose I another school for your children. Save yourself and family a stressful school year.

Very unprofessional office staff. I was told my daughter (who was hospitalized) would have her spot saved, she was accepted and I registered. When she was released from the hospital I spoke to the assistant principle who assured me she had a spot. Hours later I was called and told they were full. I had already notified my daughter and others she would be attending. I would not suggest this school for children with disabilities and/or medical conditions. .

My Daughter started during winter and the staff and teachers made the transition for my daughter very nice. The teachers communicate well via phone or email. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable and I love that the parents have to be involved when it comes to the students. I applied for my son and he will be attending next year and I am so happy for us to be a parent of the Winthrop family!!

Amazing school for my 1st grader. She is thriving and is given every opportunity needed to continue to thrive. I would recommend to anyone!

My child has been at Winthrop since she was in Kindergarten. I was so worried for her to leave and go off to school, but meeting her teacher made me feel at ease. She took the time to meet with my child and make her feel ready for her first day. I highly recommend Winthrop as my second child will be there soon.

Great school! My kids attended this school from day one and I never had any issues. The teachers, principal, staffs, and administration are all amazing. I would definitely recommend WCS.

My son started Winthrop last year, i removed him from regular public school and i couldn't be any happier with that decision. The staff and teachers are truly amazing and extremely great with all the kids. My son is excelling in all subjects and reaching his highest potential and a lot of that is thanks to Winthrop. I highly recommend Winthrop charter :)

Great school! Always good communication with parents, great drop off pick up system. GREAT teachers!

My kids have been at the school since day one. While there were some issues at the beginning, you would have to expect that with a start up school. After only 3 years, they earned an A rating in academics. If academics is your priority, this is a great school.

My daughter has completed her first (fourth) grade year at Winthrop, and she is gearing up for her fifth. After a full year there, I decided to post this review. My husband and I are very pleased with the school overall. We loved the teachers our daughter had - Mrs. Guzan and Mrs. Bowlby. They were completely professional, reliable, and very hard-working the entire year. Most of the teachers and staff are pleasant but hard-working. These people bustle and hustle. They are committed to reaching the school's goals, it is very evident. The school policies are strict for a purpose - to create uniformity in dress and provide a basic expectation of good behavior. In no way does the school inhibit children's individuality. It provides structure at a basic level so that children feel empowered at higher levels. The only complaint I have is the lack of a school nurse during school hours. Sometimes there seemed to be one; other times, there was not. This is the only major concern I have. As for other bad reviews, I've seen the principal many times - bustling, lol - and he always had a friendly smile. Same with the front office staff. I recommend Winthrop highly. :)

This school has provided me with the right tools and assistance to help my son succeed. With the online grading system PowerSchool, I was able to see from early on in the year that he needed extra help with reading. I met with his teacher to discuss my concerns, and we were able to come up with a plan that included several levels of help depending on how things progressed. Fortunately, it was enough for him to be worked with in small groups several times a week to help him improve, but had this not worked, there were other levels of assistance that were ready to be put in place. I was able to keep tabs on my son s grade through PowerSchool and keep in frequent touch with his teacher, who gave him special encouragement when he did especially well on a weekly reading test. Also, when I had concerns about my son s stuttering, I was able to quickly get him in for an evaluation with the school speech pathologist. This was very helpful to not have to pay for an outside evaluation. Because of all the help available to me, my son was able to have a very successful year.

Great school !! teachers and faculty are great, always available, and are wonderful with the kids. The curriculum is both challenging, and beneficial to the students. I reccomend this school to all the moms I know !

My daughter has been at this school now since the day it opened (3 years now) and she has excelled with the many opportunities provided to her. The academic and extra curricular activities have been available since the very beginning. She has been part of honor music society, National Junior Honor Society, safety patrols, athletic teams, yearbook club, etc. In each one of these instances, she was only allowed to participate if she kept good grades and good behavior. I like that the school puts emphasis on not only academics but also on building good people. They are not allowed to be on the athletic teams or go on field trips if their teachers don't sign off on their grades & behavior. I think this is really important, especially in the middle school so that these kids know what is expected of them as they grow into responsible adults. Uniform policy is strict but I would rather deal with that than have my kids in an environment where baggy pants or short shorts or other inappropriate clothing is the norm.

Winthrop is a wonderful school! We've been here since the beginning, and have been happy every day of the past three school years. Great teachers, great office staff, great leadership, great aftercare program! I can't say enough good things about Winthrop!

i am a student here and everything that you have read below is true... some teachers are rude and unfair but others are great. The cafeteria food is DISGUSTING!!! there is grafitti in the elementary. the middle school curriculum is all messed up. This year in language arts we have had atleast 5 teachers and subs, and in math we have had 7 teachers and subs. thus year on the fcat i wont be surprised if most of us fail. there is rarely any trouble or fights at this school... but recently a kid was caught with marajuana on his first day... they caught him right away. Another downside to this school is that THERE ARE NO LOCKERS!!! we have to carry all of our books in our backpacks 24/7!!! hope this helped!!!

This school is great. We transferred our child in mid-year last year from another CSUSA campus that wasn't a good environment. We have been blessed with great teachers, administration and staff. The school is strict but I love that. We know exactly what is expected and the consequences. This is a hard working group of professionals. I drive over 70 miles per day so my child can attend this school. It is worth the time and effort! I would highly recommend Winthrop Charter School.

This is my son's first year at Winthrop. I am a principal at another school 2 hours from here. I struggled with placing my son in a school close to home or in my school. We bounced back and forth and decided to try Winthrop out. We are thrilled with what our son has experienced. He tried the rules at first but his teacher held strong and together we got him to clearly understand this was his school and he had to follow rules as he would the rest of his life. His teacher was very supportive and never gave up. By the end of September he was following rules making good grades and the behavior had stopped. For some parents this tough routine of student accountability for their behavior and grades isn't what they expect or want to them I say this is why teaching has lost so many good teachers. Perhaps they need to consider that the reason any of the teachers have left is not the school or the administration but the parents who refuse to think their child is anything but perfect. Winthrop address the whole child. We love the school and look forward to another year.

To the patent who posted on March 6th. How many teachers have you had or do you know? How have you tried to get in contact with your teacher, if they don't respond take it to the principal but most respond. You cannot say that the majority of our teachers are that way unless you've had contact directly with them. I am sorry you are having such a bad experience but overall Winthrop is a good school with good teachers that go out of their way for their students. I myself have my feelings about the 7the grade math issue but instead of bashing the school online I went to the higher-ups about it. Overall Winthrop gas been great for my kids. I suggest this school to everyone. Also how much time do you spend at the school? How often do you volunteer? It makes a difference in your child's life to gave you there. It's great that we as parents are offered this opportunity here. Sad that more parents don't take advantage of it. It might change a few perspectives on the school too. :)

This school has many teachers that have very little experience . The teachers do NOT teach outside the box ! Most can't even teach period!! All the teachers Do NOT post all the grades as they grade them . I agree with the post below many teachers have left this school. That's the BIG talk at pick up. Take my advice find another school with teachers that are experienced and know how to email parents in a respectful way.

Our school is Winthrop Charter. I have seen some reviews that I don't understand. For ex: test scores? This school has gone up every year. They are a B overall for FCAT. I don't believe they teach to FCAT. This school teaches outside of the box, hence the reason it was picked. Also, I don't understand not knowing your child's grade. It's on the computer, they are always sending progress reports home. As for teachers not responding to a parent. If this happens then get in touch with Mr Johnson. As for the office? Go sit in the front chairs and watch for awhile ,then tell me they are bad. These ladies work very hard to protect your child. I have to say thank goodness they are the way they are. Not one person will get in without them knowing!!! All in all I believe this is a great school. Sure they could improve but what school can't!

This is the second year for my family at Winthrop Charter School. Both of my daughters are on Honor Roll and look forward to going to school every day. I cannot help but enjoy volunteering at the school, especially when the students are all smiling and polite. It is so refreshing to have children hold doors open for you and / or thank you for helping at their school. This is our future generation and they are something to be proud of! The teachers and staff really care about the children. They spend so much time helping to instill a love of learning in their students. And it shows!

Winthrop Charter School is an excellent school with amazing teachers, staff, and administration. My child has attended WCS since the doors opened and we never had any issues. My child is getting a top-notch education from some of the finest teachers in the state. In addition to getting a fantastic education, my child has the opportunity to participate in numerous after school clubs and activities. My child also participates in the school's Aftercare program, and the director and his staff run an excellent program. I love the fact that parents are required to volunteer at Winthrop. I love being involved in my child's education. My youngest child is jealous of his sibling and just can't wait to attend Winthrop next year for kindergarten.

I currently have 3 kids at this school and I am considering taking them out. The school has lost most of their teacher and are running on subs. My kids are constantly bringing home letters in the Elementary and Middle school that their teacher left. The office staff at both school are always rude, lazy always eating, talking about their husbands/boyfriends. They never seem to know anything. I have called the school several time and the phone rings non stop. If I have an issue, they suggest me to speak to the office manager who is so sarcastic and rude. If you are not one of her bff, she speaks down to you. Her kids are constantly in the office. I thought was a professional setting. The principal is never present. I have been at this school for 2 yrs and he is never around. The new A/P is always joking around and seems to be nice. But this school needs a whole lot more. The teachers are always dressed like if they were going to the park and some have their clothing so tight, that I am surprised the kids can't function. This charter school is just a business. They are constantly asking for money, supplies AND when you register your kids, you agree to complete volunteer hrs. #NOTHAPPY

I cannot say enough amazing things about this school. The teachers are phenomenal and extremely responsive and the faculty is very much involved in all areas. I'm very impressed on how well the school is run - if there is any type of issue, they jump on it to resolve quickly. My experience has been nothing short of amazing so I'm not sure where some of these negative reviews are coming from. I am notified constantly on my sons grades and progress and I feel very much involved in his education. The parents are also very much involved with each other which I also enjoy. The school is extremely responsive to the parents so parent input is never wasted. Love it here!

My 2 kids have attended this school since their doors opened. We were about to place them in a private school when the opportunity for Winthrop presented itself. Unfortunately, the great school they once attended, in our great subdivision became overcrowded, and out of control. With out reservation and with much sacrifice we decided to embarq the 19 mile commute for them to attend Winthrop. There were a few kinks the first year, but its smooth sailing now. We could not be happier of the decision we made and I am a difficult cookie to please. Therefore, I find it difficult to entirely believe some of these negative comments. Yes, the school adheres to a strict disciplined structure. That's what weeds out those who can't survive and adhere to a disciplined envfironment. Those who set a bad example for their kids and spoil the little good schools in the area. The teachers are excellent, attentive and actually seem happy to come to work. You might find an exception or two. The curriculm is culturally rich, broader than any in the area. The principals are great and always visible and approachable.Communication is excellent, you can see grades and assignments daily. Finally, peace of mind.

This is my son's 3rd year at Winthrop. As a parent who attended private school my entire life, I can honestly say this is the closest thing to a private school you could ask for. The best part is, there is no private school tuition. The students are held to a strict dress code & grooming standards. It's quite refreshing to see this when compared to other schools where improper attire is sometimes allowed. The teachers and office staff truly care about the students' mental, emotional and physical development. The head coach is the BEST in Tampa Bay and will have a bright future ahead of him. He is the perfect role model for young athletes. The negative reviews you are reading are most likely from parents that weren't aware of the high standards their child would be held to before enrolling them at Winthrop. It is fully laid out on the website and any hand-outs given by the school what is expected of the children that attend Winthrop. The first year there were kinks to work out (as with any new school), but the principal & staff worked diligently to fix any issues that arose. We are just praying that Winthrop opens for grades 9-12 next year so our son can continue to attend.

This school is great! I'm also a student attending Winthrop and I have got to say I that love it! I have been there since it's opening and I loved it! The teachers are nice and as the 7th grader said, the teachers really care about our education. Not saying anything about the lunch or the uniform, but it is a great school! I would reccomend it.

Congrats on the B rating. That's a great accomplishment for being such a young school tasked with educating all kids that the public schools couldn't.
Posted: August 7, 2013
I just have to say I find it really interesting the parents that don't like this school are the parents of children who aren't getting good grades. I met a woman today raving about how her granddaughter was such a great reading then when she went to Winthrop her reading level went down. Really? That is the dumbest thing I ever heard of. Maybe its just that the common core level of education is not right for her that's way her grades dropped. We love the school !!

My two sons are going to this school since the school started and we are extremely happy with the school. Front desk people are so good. Class teachers are very nice and my kids are excelling in their studies. Music teacher is awesome. They have very nice exposure to other activities. I would definitely recommend this school.

As a high school science teacher for 12 years I have a fair idea what to look for in a school for our 8yr old. Winthrop is a step down from many local schools I have visited. It is difficult to make a call about a school prior to attending but we will not be back. The negative comments I have encountered are unfortunately true. This is intended to give parents some notice on what I have seen after a year at the school. Good luck with your school search.

My son started at Winthrop in 1st grade in the fall of 2011 (year they started) and he will continue now to 3rd grade. So far it has been a great experience and it has certainly exceeded my expectations. This school is very involved in the community and extremely dynamic. The Winthrop teachers all give 150% and they can all show for it. My son is very talkative and the teachers of Winthrop have been able to focus on this academic strength and keep him involved and committed to his school work. The Music, Physical education, Computers, Science and Spanish and Library departments are all staffed by amazing individuals that love to teach. There are community hours that are requiredI have done most in their lunch room, events and donations and I finished way before the school was over and I work full time. I've attended almost all the parent meetings and I've always felt that I could freely ask questions. I have always seen the Principal or Assistant principal present at all meetings. This school is relatively large but has a small school feel and the front desk ladies always remember the parents and are very nice.

I can't help but notice that many of these negative reviews come from parents who lack basic grammar skills, which also leads me to wonder if it is just the same parent re-posting to make the school look bad. Regardless, I have a daughter who attended 6th grade here for 12-13 and will be returning. She loves her teachers (especially reading, they need to hold on to her!) and I like the structure. All of the teachers were very communicative and knowledgable and I saw active administration every time I volunteered on campus. We love Winthrop!

I have to say I am shocked by reading what a completely different experience some people have had at Winthrop - my daughter is going on her 3rd year here and she has loved it from the start - made many friends, loves her teachers and is making great grades. We had been doing virtual/homeschool for many years after I pulled my kids from public school because they were in huge elementary classes and not getting individual attention - this is not at all the case (I am seeing) at Winthrop Charter Middle school. At one point she was struggling in her History class and was able to attend group tutoring, and brought her grade up for the rest of the year. The rules are strict and enforced, and as a parent, I am all for that. Is it perfect? no, but they are working on making improvements as they can - the see a problem, set a goal, and make the changes to fix it. In my opinion, their policies encourage parental involvement and open lines of communication. I am puzzled by those who have had such a vastly different experience.

Good idea gone bad... Our son had perfect grades and no issues. The instruction and communication from staff were a far cry from what we were looking for. I did meet some great people there but not nearly enough. I talked to many parents most were disappointed. This school will have a tremendous turn over rate.

my two kids attends this school since it opened.. I am so happy is the last week. the stress is over. they are not coming back to this school. They are kids in elementary school not people from the army. They are not allow to do nothing. The are more interesting in behavior than their grades. there's got to be a happy medium and this school don't have that. Find out first why this school is category C. Talk to different parents first. And find out how many kids from last year stay in this school. My daugther who is an honor roll in this school is leaving together with all her best friends who are also honor roll. So happy I dont have to come back ever again!!

My son attends Winthrop Charter since it opened. We love the school and my son is so happy there. I have great communication with the teachers. I feel like they care about each student needs. My son is now in 1st grade is doing very well and so proud what he has learned. There are some enrichment programs offered. As far as the uniform , for the people who complained on other ratings about this there is a manual that tells you what is required to wear . I personally like the dress code it makes it easy in the morning. I would recommend this school and my little one can't wait to start there.

My family and I are having great experience at Winthrop Charter School. We have to work hard to maintain our grades. My 4th grader is on Honor Roll and my 2nd grader is on High Honor Roll (all As). I am proud of the work that the teachers, the principal(s) and the support staff have done to make my kids successful. When I go to the school, the kids are well behaved, smiling and the teachers seem warm and interested in the success of the children. I have to stay connected by checking my kids grades on SIS (school website), and their agendas for homework assignments. My teachers have been great at sending home weekly agendas outlining the homework, tests and projects due for the week. This helps my kids learn organization and time management. The principal also rewards the students' character achievements through the school Strive Program. Every quarter, kids are awarded certificates in the cafeteria for academic and character achievements. I like all the extra curricular programs like Broadway,Music, Robotics, Arts, Spanish, Photography, sports, even cheerleading.I hope they add a high school as well. The kids fortunate to start here in Kindergarten will be very successful.

Do not recommend this school to no one. Please try to talk to parents first. Ask about how many students did not reach their goals. Ask what kind of help they got for kids with special needs. You will be surprise. I never seen parents and kids so disappointed in any school. Ask before you make a mistake. There is nothing in this school to make this children feel welcome. The secretary laugh at you when you need to talk the principal. You ask a question and it looks like sport game, everyone throw the ball to someone else and at the end no one is responsable of anything. The principal should be on the most wanted person. Just for your kid, ask before making a decision.

My children attend this school, the oldest has since the doors open. We have been more than pleased with the teachers. They go above and beyond what is required. Any obligations on your part are presented on the website prior to applying for a spot here, if you are unaware that there is a required uniform, you need a certain number of volunteer hours (that may be obtained through supply donations, IF YOU CHOSE) or anything else that is expected than you didn't read it. This information is also given at the open house. Communication is well above average, there is a specified log in system with direct emails, weekly assignments and your childs grades. I am impressed with Mr. Johnson. I have over 60 hrs. of volunteer time for this school year, although I can't say that I have seen him each time I have been at the school but, I don't expect to.

I can not see how this school is still operational. The staff and organization are all a JOKE! First on the second week of my kindergartner and second grader attending this school they were released ALONE with no adult supervision and managed to walk to publix. It just so happen that a staff member (who my children did not know and could have been anyone posing as a teacher with a uniform shirt) noticed them and returned them to school within 30 minutes of missing! This was the only time I was able to speak with the principal (with fear this would go public I'm sure). His response was those responsible would be taken care of, and reassurance that this would not happen again. The front office clerks are rude, unhelpful, snobby and unprofessional. They roll their eyes and do not know answers to anything! This school is more concerned about the fact that my daughter's shoes has a little pink in them than her studies. There is someone who actually goes around and checks to see if the children are wearing belts and writes them up! What does a belt or shoes have to do with effective learning? The pick up line is an absolute unorganized MESS! Worry more about education not appearance.
Posted: May 5, 2013
I understand the school is new and is working out some kinks but I'd have to say overall, lack of organization is its biggest flaw. The beginning-of-the-year Open House event was a DISASTER, completely overcrowded and unorganized. The athletic department, which for some sports depends on parent volunteers, is also unorganized and lacks effective communication (I think Coach Irvin does his best but is completely overwhelmed). Staff members in the elementary office have been less than polite on more than one occasion and the current parent volunteer coordinator can be downright rude. Mandatory volunteer hours are a great thing, but I was disappointed to find AFTER the year began that you can buy your way out ($10 = 1 hour). The school is constantly, and I mean CONSTANTLY, soliciting supplies (NEVER experienced this in our prior public elementary school), and reminding you that purchasing them is a "great way to earn those volunteer hours." So they extol the value of being a presence in your child's school, then let you get away with dropping off some tissues and hand sanitizer as "volunteer" work. My kids miss their old school, and so do I...overall we're disappointed.

I just have been told that my daughter wil not pass 5th grade and I just want to cry. no one told me ahead of time what was going on about it. I think this school should have call me like they did when my daughter bring yellow sucks. I am so mad about. My daughter is out of this school today. Don't recomment this school to no one.

it looks like the principal was the person who wrote the las review. My son has been in this school since day one. And that is not what i see in this school. a lots of parents are not happy. They are working on manners and respect and uniform but not on their grades. No one care about if the student need help or not. I have been trying to speak with the principal and only emails says i will get in touch with you and nothing. About the talking they are not allowed to talk not even at lunch and there is a person in the bathroom making sure no one talks. absolutely ridiculous. The only way they get in touch with you if your child go to school with yellow socks, that is more important for them than how they are doing with his grades. and follow on of the teachers there is a lot of students that will failed grade next year thanks to this attituted.
Posted: March 24, 2013
Definitely there is no priorities in this school. It's been almost two weeks that I am trying to schedule a meeting and they only said they will schedule a meeting and still waiting. The teacher has been calling names to my son who has a health condition that will not allowed him to behaved like others students. Very disappointed.

My son is a 6th grader this year at Winthrop. He came from an amazing elemenatry school experience, so Winthrop had a tough act to follow. Overall, I have been pleased with the school. Mr. Coelho runs a tight ship at the middle school level, and frankly at this age it's a good idea. The majority of the teachers are really good. There are always great teachers, good teachers and weak teachers in ANY school. He is in the advanced classes and I have seen him be challenged and learn a great deal in his classes. Is there room for improvement? Sure. The science classes could use some lab materials, and the PE program could be better. It would be nice if they could vary their electives a little bit too. I am a high school teacher and I realize that this is a small school, so they can't offer the variety that a larger public school can offer, but overall I am happy with my son's progress and feel that he is being well-prepared for high school.

I started working for Winthrop last year when it opened, and I am proud to be a part of a school that truly is dedicated to doing what is best for our kids. I understand the frustration some parents have about uniforms, not being able to walk a little one to class, or using an online system as a main means of communication, but these are small issues in the grand scheme of all the good. I taught in the county for 3 years before coming here and will never go back- the kids are wonderful, the majority of parents are supportive and involved, and my colleagues are dedicated to the profession. We are expected to respond to parents within 24 hours, no exceptions, and I know I don't make my parents wait that long. We offer way more sports, clubs, tutoring opportunities, etc. to students than most other schools in the area. The school is free and you get a private school feel. We challenge our kids and work hard to help struggling students rise to the challenge. We have high expectations that we help kids meet. I would send my own kids here and someday will- Winthrop is a great place to be, especially the middle school! Good middle schools are few and far between here, and ours is great!

my daughter attends this school and comes home crying every day. this school is like a prison inside and out. the teachers are mean and the kids just had winter break and she came home and had to do two giant projects. she comes home everyday telling me about all the drama happening and i want to know where the teachers are when all this happens. my daughter has been there since day one we did a second year to give them another try, but it just got worse, we will not be returning

My children (2nd & 3rd grade) are currently attending Winthrop Charter. My children went from making honor roll easily to struggling just to make honor roll. This place is like a factory get them in and get them out, hopefully w/ passing grades. The classes are overcrowded with disrespectful/rude students. The good kids are overlooked. Principle who? Assistant principle who? Never met them and couldn't even begin to tell you what they look like.I have to prod just to find out information regarding my childrens' schoolwork and even then I'm given very short answers, but if theres an item need for the school or class I get at least a two paragraph email/letter sent home. I could go on and on but I wont. I am taking my children out b4 they can fail. P.S. There is NO WAITING list. We relocated to the area my children started here about 3 weeks after school started. I saw on the website that there is a possibility of a waiting list and that you have to submit all required info and wait to be "accepted". HA! The same day all my info was submitted was the same day they were "accepted". Since then at least 2 or 3 other students have joined my kids class each. So there is no waiting list.

My daughter goes here and she said it was strait out torture, The teachers push them too hard and yell at them for doing stuff they diddent do. My daughter got her belt taken away for being to late for safety patrol duty and leaving too early. They also got silent lunch for a month! Personally i think lunch is their time to talk and express their feelings! They have been sitting in chairs for hours!! Give them a break!!! Also they focus too much on uniform and behavior instead of academics and the childrens feelings! spare your child by not taking them to this school. One last thing, the school dean never awnsers my emails/ phone calls. I also went to the school to talk to him face to face but he wasent available. Please dont take your child to this school! Very Disappointed... My kids have been in this school since they open their door for the firts time. My son has been struggle for so long and even I put him in two differents tutoring no one in the school can help me on why he is running behind. The Principal send me to the teacher who was apsent for a whole month and during this time he came home crying every day because he had two different sub and could not understand. They are focus in bahavior and uniform, but not if the kid need help in learning. My daughter who is an honor roll dont like the school, they dont let her talk at all, in class.. on the cafeteria.. halls etc, the only place she could talk was the bathroom and they also locate someone at the bathroom door just to make sure no one talk. it's insane!! they go way to far... looks like a military school not a middle charter school.
