My children currently go to this school & it’s always an issue my children come home drained Mentally due to other children actions for a school who is supposedly against bullying it happens frequently then when you fight back you have a target on your back. The assistant principal doesn’t speak to my kids due to issues with me having to come & be their advocate because that’s my job as a parent it’s supposed to be her job as an administrator for the children to feel seen & heard when bringing concern! She has looked me in my face & smiled as I told her if I had to show my face again it would not be a pretty meeting as that one was… I’m not sure what’s funny about children being bullied! I as a parent feel like I have failed my children by bringing them to this school ! Something needs to change within this school & FAST ! Begin giving children the punishment they deserve. Become bias to situations no matter if you personally know the child or not every one deserves fair treatment & it is NOT being given! I do plan on speaking to principal Lovely… btw I’ve tried going to him each time & the dean of students comes forward or the assistant no I need the man in charge or I will be going to the school board soon!

I strongly advise against sending your child to this school. The reviews are so bad, they turned off the option to leave a Google review. My son was a thriving, straight-A student before enrolling at Duval Charter Westside. While he continues to excel academically, his time at this school has caused significant emotional and mental distress.
Within his first few months of starting 6th grade, he was profiled and cursed out by an 8th-grade teacher. Despite having both witness accounts and camera footage showing the teacher took him into a private classroom without surveillance, the school deemed our report "unfounded."
In a separate incident, a student threatened to harm my son. The school classified this as a "low-level threat" and dismissed it as a joke, which was deeply concerning.
I had hoped the negative reviews were exaggerated, but unfortunately, our experience confirmed them. I truly regret placing my trust in this school with my child’s well-being.

I second the comment posted from yesterday. I reached out about the morning drop off & the problem with it- no response from the principal. This was more than 24-48 hours ago, unacceptable. My children have attended the school for a few years and the prior principal was responsive within a reasonable time. If I can’t expect the principal to respond for things like improving drop off, how can I trust that he will be there if something happens (ex: bullying)? It has not been a personable experience and I didn’t see the principal at Orientation welcoming parents. Another problem is the delayed drop off, students aren’t able to eat breakfast and are rushed into the school to begin their lesson (not to mention the dean yelling & being rude to students upon arrival at 7 in the morning…….) We arrive early but the kids don’t exit the car until 755-after 8. There was no communication sent about the children being released at a new time (prior year it was 3 & 315), why the change now? I hope this is not what parents should expect for the year to come or I can see enrollment dropping.

In 2020, my daughter embarked on her educational journey at DCSW as a kindergartner, and the level of support she has received has been extraordinary. The teachers at DCSW go above and beyond to actively engage with their students, fostering a nurturing and enriching learning environment. I been impressed by the school's commitment to transparency and honesty in all aspects of operations, ensuring that parents are well-informed and involved in their children's education every step of the way. This dedication to open communication and genuine care for students' well-being has made DCSW a standout institution in our eyes, and we are grateful for the positive impact it has had on our daughter's academic and personal growth.

Don’t go to this school because the teachers are rude, the school itself is dirty, they’re roaches and ants in this school, the milk is chunky and slimy, the food there will make you sick, you will get in trouble for something you didn’t do and they other person will get away with it, they will make you write from 25-1000 sentences, if one person does something wrong, the whole class gets in trouble, and there’s more but i don’t wanna spend time writing about a dumb school with stupid rules and don’t bring spray perfume or deodorant or lotion cause they will take it, sometimes they will take your personal things such as your purse, or chapstick or lipgloss, your food, your water, feminine bags and etc. if you buy your child school supplies they teachers will take majority of it so tell your kid to hid their stuff in there backpacks. if you or kid (or kids) like drama and fights, come to this school for sure. i recommend you don’t come to this school cause you might end up with anxiety or anger issues. if you are joining this school i’m praying for you. yeah

My nieces attend this school and I must say, I agree this school should be shut down. The leadership at this school has no educational experience on how to manage the school or her staff. There has been several times that I dropped off and picked up and the doors are propped open and left unattended. I agree with the negative reviews of this school and something needs to be done!

This school is terrible, and I advise parents not to send their kids here. This was my last year at this school, and I'm glad. The principal is terrible and doesn't know how to run the school; some of the staff doesn't even like her, and that's just sad. The eighth graders barely had any teachers, and teachers were leaving all throughout the school year, so I'm surprised I even passed with only a few teachers. I'm so happy I left this school, and if you do send your kids here, good luck.

This school is absolutely disgusting. They have no control over these children. The teachers come and go so often, they are nothing more than babysitters. Their academic curriculum is useless and lazy. It is not up to any grade level. There is no help for students struggling, and no programs for those who excel. Bullying is a huge, huge problem. There is no support for the students experiencing bullying. Not even when a parent threatens police involvement. No support for anything honestly. It is not safe at all. From fighting kids, to no cross walk, no real security, on a busy road, and parents driving like maniacs, it's just not safe. Period. I fought with them for a few years before we began homeschool and moved. Racism is also rampant. Kids run around yelling the N word, and attacking white kids. I know this all sounds crazy, but this isn't even the whole of our terrible experience. Our children deserve better. Close it down or fix it!

This school is a terrible school to send your kids to my kid has been here since 2018 he has barely had any teachers in his whole school experience. He has tried to get help to seek help from the counselor but has never gotten any, there are always ghetto kids in the counselor's room. The teachers always quit 2 weeks into the school and don't even teach. They always talk about how they have a life outside of school and say “my husband has his own business/job I can survive outside of this teacher job”. That is not what a kid should hear at school. My kid should have the best learning experience and opportunity not some lecture from a teacher. For this school to be considered a charter school they value the dress code more than the student's education. To top it all off this school has been on the news for serving a kid a moldy hotdog. The food here is so bad my kid threw up three days in a row because they only had 1 food to sever. I do not recommend this school to any parents!

Posted: August 11, 2017

I went to this school before and I speak the truth. This school has a bad reputation for people leaving and for good reason. When I went here the students drove the teachers crazy and one student even brought a BB Gun to school! Anti-bullying is a joke and the teachers leave so fast we even had a teacher leave in the middle of the year which meant that we had to stop class for almost 3 months to find a replacement! This school is terrible especially for a charter school. DO NOT send your kids here unless you want trouble.

Posted: June 25, 2017

More often than not, many students who misbehave and deserve to be expelled are overlooked in favor of other students who are wrongly blamed, even by the teachers. The misbehaving students get far more attention than the behaving students, which leads to the ones that deserve praise to never receive it. Thus, the student body has turned into a truly corrupt society.

Posted: June 25, 2017

Many teachers are unable to keep their students in line and often just resort to sending them to someone in a higher position. In addition, the teachers themselves complain about how the school operates and what other teachers do (it should be noted that this is usually because of the incompetence of other people, which makes it something worth complaining about).

Posted: June 25, 2017

Teachers pick and choose what situations they deal with. Some of the major problems never get the attention they deserve, while minor issues are made to look like something bigger.

Posted: June 25, 2017

Overall, this school simply pitiful when compared to other schools. Some teachers are simply unable to teach and deal with situations properly. It has gotten to the point where students have no trust in any teacher they have. Misbehavior and bullying can be found more often than not and does not prepare students for the future. However, there have been a select few teachers that truly care for their students and would jump through hoops just to see their students succeed. Sadly, this school has a reputation for having teachers quit or leave because of how incompetent this school is. This leaves students in between a rock and a hard place. Even the higher-ups try to deny things that happen in this school. Overall, I have never been very pleased with this school whatsoever.

Posted: June 25, 2017

Homework seems to be a hit-or-miss. Sometimes the students get homework, sometimes they don't More often than not, the homework hardly ever counts as a grade.

Posted: June 25, 2017

Many of the teachers at this school are unable to properly teach their students. While there have certainly been a few 'gems in the rogugh' as far as teachers go, even they cannot stand some of the other teachers. For an example, one teacher was completely oblivious to everything their students did. They didn't even know what they were teaching. I am not kidding when I say this, but in the beginning of the school year, they said that a rock was a living thing. In addition, in the end-of-year tests that the students were given, that teacher could not keep the students under control at all. Even with strict testing guidelines given by the state, they still let their students throw pencils and talk to one another during the most important test of the year for the students. While not all teachers are like this, they are certainly not great. The school claims that they hire people with teaching experience, but this could not seem any farther from the truth.

Posted: June 25, 2017

While the teachers do the best they can in certain situations, the school itself does not offer much help with these students. In general, it just leads to a confusing situation for the student, teachers, and staff members.

Posted: June 8, 2017

in most cases the teacher will assign homework and just put a check mark on paper and not answering questions with question mark for certain questions myself or my grandson didn't understand. That shows me that she did not grade the work only glanced over it.

Posted: June 8, 2017

This school year 2017 my grandson teacher has not been truthful.

Posted: June 8, 2017

I'm sorry I just don't see it.

Posted: June 8, 2017

I feel like the principal last school year was more helpful and understanding to students and parents need.

Posted: June 8, 2017

This is definitely not true. I had my grandson teacher this year to tell me my grandson was passing and when I received his report card his grades were failing. I repeataly wrote her letters after letters about him going to tutoring. She kept stating that he was okay and he will pass to the next grade. However he has failed the 5th grade and they say there is nothing that can be done. This is so unfair to him,he will not be returning to this school.

Posted: June 8, 2017

I have heard other parents talking about their kids being bullied at this school.

Posted: June 8, 2017

1, because I don't think its about the students best interest I think its more about a job. How can you sit there and see a child is failing but keep telling their parents that their passing and they{teacher} not offer the parents tutoring for their child.

Posted: May 26, 2016

Our student has had one effective and one ineffective teacher. They are worlds apart! The first is caring and let parents and students know she cares. The second (this year) has IGNORED a family tragedy that is GREATLY affecting our first grader's behaviors, ability to concentrate, attitude, and emotions!! EVERYDAY since our tragedy happened, she has come home crying. It seems this teacher couldn't give a flying fig!!

Posted: May 26, 2016

Way, WAY TOO MUCH for first grade!! Much more of the work that is sent home should be accomplished in the classroom.

Posted: May 26, 2016

I gave 3 stars because there is no half-point grading. D.C.S. Westside deserves only 2.5 stars for the 2015-2016 academic year.

I am a grandparent of a first grade student. This is a student who has L.O.V.E.D. school since she was three-years old. She is a top-level student and loved kindergarten last year at DCSW and this year started out as a five-star year with this first grader declaring that she LOVED school, wanted to grow up and be a teacher, and come back and BE a teacher AT DCSW!! Then January happened. (Insert frown face)

Since January, this first grade teacher has implemented all sorts of "inventive and assertive discipline" with no recognition that its effects are much more negative, upon her very young students, than it is positive. She ignores the rudeness and verbal bullying by some students while singling out those who are still learning to be still and quiet, by shaming them with colored frown faces and removal of free-time "points". I refuse to believe that a teacher can spend ALL YEAR in one room with 20+ children and not hear the meanness and cruelty spoken, and then the "solution" is to humiliate the victim by taking points away because they were talking to try to take up for themselves!! (Insert red angry frown face!) I assert that the "I never hear that!" excuse it is a PERPETUAL LIE perpetrated by lazy teachers who just don't want the confrontation with certain students.

This situation is compounded by COMPLETE REFUSAL to recognize genuine tragedies in these children's lives!! Ignoring this has been extremely HARMFUL to my student!! So… thanks for RUINING a sweet child's expectation of a happy school year and being the catylist of self-hatred, and feelings of self-worthlessness!!!

Posted: May 26, 2016

Bullies are allowed to say anything and those who take up for themselves are reprimanded.

My son has been at this school since it opened and we love it. Yes, we had a rough start this year with a high turn over of teachers but it smoothed out after the first month. My second son will start here soon and there's no where else I would trust with their education.

Posted: February 3, 2015

I understand that some parents are upset about the turn over that took place but being upset with current staff seems so redundant. I believe in weathering the storm, and God puts people where they should be. The current principal is outstanding and only cleaning up the mess that prior staff left behind. I have sat in the lobby and listened to parents disrespect staff in front of children because they do not want to follow rules! What an example. Kids grow up screwed up because of their example. My 1st, 6th, and 7th grader are ALL honor roll students, they follow rules, and I love the positive re-direction from staff. I constantly pray for this school everyday. So if staff and students are leaving. GOOD.God is cleaning the negativity out and bringing in a rainbow of great staff and families. Also school let's out at 3:30 so being the responsible parent that I am (because that's what parents do) I get there early enough (3:10) to pick my children on time. I am out of the line at 3:35- 3:40. And that is because I enforce rules with my children, and they do not lay down the rules with me. I also volunteer. School Board gives results not the school..

Posted: January 27, 2015

I am a grandparent, and I love my grandaughter's teacher. She is awesome and she is always taking her time with her and making sure she understands her work.

Posted: January 27, 2015

This school is awful and unorganized. This school has been through 3 principles this year. Teachers are always quitting. My daughter is in the 6th grade. The school did not have history for a subject because the other 2 teachers quite, so they had to do away with the subject. It takes over an hour in the car line to get your child; in addition, the front desk personnel and the current principle are EXTREMELY RUDE! I will NEVER bring my child to this school again.

Posted: January 6, 2015

I will be going to the superintendent. I have tried to be patient and understanding. I have attempted to communicate with the school. Have submitted 2 volunteer background checks (believing maybe the school did not receive the first one) and have received no reply to my request.

Posted: December 10, 2014

My son is in 2nd grade here and he's not passing. His homework that is sent home is incomplete and is missing pieces. I send in notes, calls and emails with no response. Fed up moving my child. They need to get it together! Bullying goes on daily. Kids can't learn like this! Bad environment. Why have policies if you don't enfore them. I was excited the first year my son went here but it's like the great instructors have left or want to leave. If yo care about your child's education - don't go here until they work out the issues. We won't be back!
