I really like San Jose Prep. I wasn't satisfied with the schools in my community and I have an hour commute to work and San Jose is on that route. May daughter started going there in the 6th grade and she is now in the 10th. She has grown by leaps and bounds. I love the diversity at the school. And the teachers really care. There have been times when my daughter has been a bit too talkative and her grades slipped. Her teachers e-mailed me with their concerns and offered to meet to discuss the matter. The work is tough. I will admit my daughter has gotten overwhelmed a time or two with her AP classes but her teachers have encouraged her greatly and they offer after school tutoring. They recently added the Capstone program to their curriculum and my daughter is in it. They said there are maybe 3 or four schools in the state which met the requirements to offer it and they are the only Charter school at this time who does. If your kid is not mature or needs direct instruction, this school is not for you. All kids struggle going from Elementary to Jr High and from Jr High to High school but in my opinion, the ones my daughter tells me are struggling the most are the ones who require a lot of hand holding and direction. Good parental involvement with the school as well as with the teachers. I've had them to e-mail or text me in real time if my kid is acting up and I ring her cell phone immediately so she knows I'm aware of what's going on and she better cut it out. LOL. Yes, it's a brave new world when it comes to education and we have to think outside the box. But I digress. I would recommend this school to anyone who wants a good, safe, forward thinking school. Oh, and they have an awesome Drama club!!!

The teachers really know their students and tailor their efforts in teaching to their needs. It's a small school, so it's a place to call home.

This school is the epitamy of unorganization. They have such a high turnover of teachers that my child had 3 science teachers last year. Three new principals in 3 years, and that's just the beginning. No communication with parents except for a couple of teachers. The classrooms are a ruckus and the teachers (who mean well) can't control these degenerate students. This is a school for students that can't conform to a traditional school. My child couldn't learn because of all the ruckus. It was a nightmare.
There's also a ridiculous bathroom "rule" where they couldn't use the bathroom except for 2 times during the year per class and no bathroom breaks when moving from class to class. I'd have to stop at a store on the way home from picking my child up just so he could use the restroom. Horrific.
We learned that too late. I'm so glad to get my child out of here. Mr Schinella and Ms O'Connor are great...but that's all the positives I have. High turnover of teachers and admin. Bullies are rampant here, and there's no discipline. Run! Run away as fast as you can.

Great school. The teachers actually care about the students and the school has new leadership, the future is promising.

School is a disgrace. The way the parents, students and staff are treated is uncalled for. The school is also going under financial difficulties. Teachers have been told to look for jobs elsewhere. The fate of the school is on spiral loop downward.

We moved fr St Johns and started at San Jose Academy this year (10th grade). The school is only one year old, so this is the beginning of year two. I was reluctant at first to send my daughter d/t the rating the school rec'd last year, but I found out every 1st year charter school in Duval County rec'd a very poor rating. The principal came from an A school and I have every confidence that she and her staff will work very hard to make this an A school. Although it has only been a few weeks since school started I'm very impressed with the teachers and admin so far (all act like they really CARE abt the students). The teachers are young and excited about teaching. The principal and her admin assistant have made both me and my daughter feel comfortable and welcome at the school. I will try and post as the year progresses, but so far I give San Jose Academy an A+. I feel very lucky that we found this school because it is not yet well known (and the first year rating probably scared some people off). I'm pretty sure that in the very near future San Jose Academy will have a very long waiting list. Small "private school" environment. SJA: grades 6-11 adding 12 next year.---SJA-Fan
