My concern with this school is that it seems more focused on giving students passing grades or offering a "nice try" approach than on ensuring they are actually learning and mastering the material. Unfortunately, my grandson attends this school, and I have seen firsthand how this approach can negatively affect a student's academic progress. He is falling behind his peers academically, yet he continues to make the honor roll. That raises serious concerns about whether grades accurately reflect student achievement. In my opinion, there are much better educational options available.

My oldest started here when it opened and now my youngest since kindergarten and now in middle school. Ive seen a lot of changes over the years but honestly I would not choose any public school over this school. Every school has gone through the same things and same challenges since 2020. Im still very happy with smaller class sizes and family atmosphere in general. You cant get that at these huge public schools. Only wish the high school wasnt so far on Baymeadows! Need one closer!

Hi im a former student who attended this school from 6th through 8th grade. In my opinion, one of the biggest issues is the constant teacher turnover and switching. Students are often left with substitutes or replacement teachers who do not properly teach the material and instead give us large packets to complete. At the start of 25-26 I had a good ELA teacher who taught my class a lot and helped raise my FAST score. After he left due to his mental health, we got a different teacher who often gave us huge amounts of packets instead of teaching lessons. This caused a lot of stress, especially when assignments from other classes were also piling up, and my PM3 ELA FAST score dropped. I also really appreciated the counselors, especially my former sixth-grade history teacher who later became a counselor. Another issue is that administration does not always seem to take student concerns seriously. There have been situations involving students being harassed, administrators speaking negatively about students, and a former science teacher telling biology students to teach yourselves after refusing to teach. Multiple students reported concerns about this, but it felt like nothing was done. I also believe certain administrators need to improve their attitudes toward students. To be fair, Coastal had some positive aspects, including its grading and remediation policies, and some great staff members. I hope the school takes these concerns seriously and works to improve instead of ignoring them.

Hi Im a former student of this school, and overall I would give it about a 2.5 out of 5 stars.

One of the biggest issues was the teacher turnover. Every year I attended, at least one teacher left in the middle of the school year, making learning inconsistent and sometimes chaotic. Many classes ended up with long-term substitutes, and students were often given large packets of work instead of receiving proper instruction.

The science teacher situation during the 2025-2026 school year was especially frustrating. The first teacher taught the material, although lessons often felt rushed. After she left, the replacement teacher provided very little direct instruction. Most classes consisted of digital organizers and articles, and he barely included presentations or lectures. When students asked science questions, they were often directed back to the articles instead of receiving clear explanations. As a result, many students felt they had to teach themselves the material and prepare for the EOC largely on their own.

The schools organization could also be improved. It often felt like students with known behavioral issues were placed together in multiple classes, creating frequent distractions and making it harder for others to learn.

The car line was another recurring problem. Students were sometimes scanned into the wrong lane, and dismissal often took longer than necessary because of traffic backups and confusion.

I also had concerns about PE. At times, students were pushed through intense drills through hot weather, and some appeared genuinely exhausted or close to passing out.

Another concern was the attitude of some administrators. There were occasions when staff seemed disrespectful toward students, at times I even overheard many speaking negatively about students. I was also concerned about how some students with special needs were treated, as they did not always seem to receive the patience and support they deserved.

To be fair, there were some positive aspects of the school. Its smaller size made it feel less overwhelming than many other larger Duval county schools , and class sizes were generally reasonable. Some teachers and staff were excellent, particularly the counselor who taught history and the 7th-8th grade math teacher. Another positive part was the remediation policy, which was less strict than at many other schools and gave students more flexibility.

I hope the school takes these issues into consideration of improving.

I dont recommend this school because, the ela class has had no teacher for 2-3 moths, theres a teacher that spends 20-30 mins on the rules and we cant even take our notebooks home to study for a test, when my brother comes home he beggs my mom to stay home the next day because the bullying is so bad. The safety here does not feel safe at all I've been here sense kindergarden through 8th grade, the administration is so bad to the point where the assistant principal had targed people, the dean had done a bad job at helping with bulling reports, my bff had to tell her parentnts just so they cound handle the situation PROPERLY!. Its disappointing that we have to call or talk to our parents just for them to start working on whats wrong, the food, we have the same for three days in a row and the mild has a water washed out flavor, pe they make us do the mile even tho we just ate or we got a bit sick we could have done the mile after our body has digested the food we ate so we don't puke im really disappointed in this school i really don't recommend , they disrespect parents on the phone and ect... i don't recommend to your students. Don't bring them here.

My time at my middle school played a huge role in preparing me for high school and beyond. One of the most valuable opportunities the school provided was allowing students to take high school level classes while still in middle school. Being exposed to more advanced coursework early helped me build strong study habits, time management skills, and confidence in my academic abilities before entering high school. Taking these classes gave me a better understanding of what would be expected at the next level and made the transition to high school much smoother. The teachers were supportive and encouraged students to challenge themselves academically while still providing the guidance needed to succeed. They created an environment where students could grow, ask questions, and develop critical thinking skills. In addition to academics, the school emphasized responsibility, organization, and perseverance skills that are essential for success in high school. Looking back, Im very grateful for the opportunities I had during middle school. The experiences and preparation I received there helped set a strong foundation for my future education and allowed me to enter high school feeling confident and prepared.

This school is honestly one of the worst environments Ive experienced. The staff clearly dont care about students theyre rude, dismissive, and some even make fun of students instead of supporting them. It feels like theres no respect at all.The student environment isnt any better. A lot of students act out, and it can feel unsafe at times. Theres little to no control, and it doesnt seem like the administration takes behavior seriously.Academically, its a mess. I havent had an ELA teacher for two months, which is completely unacceptable. That shows a total lack of organization and concern for students education. Instead of fixing issues, the school seems more focused on cutting costs wherever possible, even when it directly affects learning.Overall, it feels like the school doesnt prioritize students, safety, or education. I wouldnt recommend this place to anyone looking for a supportive or structured learning environment.

i went here k-5 im in 7th and left because first of all this school is not good , when i was here like each year there would be new staff and those new staff acted like they knew everything about you more than the other staff thats been here longer , these teacher never teached anything and threw tests in your face every week , and youd get in trouble for the dumbest things , even though i had a lot of friends the teachers made it such an un fun experience , some teachers even talked about other students , and most of the staff was rude and obnoxious.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Duval Charter at Coastal. From the moment you walk in, its clear that their commitment to students is a top priority.

The communication from administration and teachers is exceptionalconsistent, clear, and proactive. Whether its updates, events, or individual student progress, we have always been kept informed and involved.

The quality of teaching is outstanding. The educators are not only knowledgeable but genuinely passionate about helping each student succeed. They take the time to understand different learning styles and go above and beyond to ensure every child feels supported, challenged, and inspired.

Safety is clearly a major focus, and it shows. The school maintains a secure, well-organized environment where students feel comfortable and protected. There is a strong emphasis on both physical safety and emotional well-being, creating a positive atmosphere where kids can truly thrive.

Beyond academics, Duval Charter at Coastal fosters a welcoming, inclusive community where students are encouraged to grow not just intellectually, but socially and emotionally as well.

So I'm a student here i am in the 7th grade and it had not been good ever since I got here in the 5th grade with my physical and mental health there has been bullying bad teachers just all that jazz and teachers are mean at this school lower grade teachers are so harsh I tell you harsh and middle school don't even get me started this school is just not good there had been fights and bullies so just be careful when you come to this school kids and teachers here are mean not all of them and some of my teachers gossip about other kids so just be careful.

So I'm a student at this school some of the teachers especially the ones that teach the lower grades are really harsh like I had this teacher in third grade she was like really rude to everyone for the stupidest things and I struggled with mental health in this school there is two therapists which is a good thing there is but one teacher the testing teacher acts like she's the boss also my sister who's in eighth grade teacher didn't teach her entire class period also she gave everyone tutoring even the smart kids and by the way my friend saw her after school teacher in the parking lot vaping

My kid went to this school and she got harassed really badly for 7 years straight. If you are not basic standard like your in the alternative umbrella or not comfort in your skin this school is not for you. Youll get bullied really badly in this school for being different because my daughter had to experience that. Everytime I call at this school and I report my child has got harassed they didnt do anything about it #bullyingsupporters. The dress code here is definitely judge mental just in picture day my child came back and reported that they made her take off her makeup just because its different and take off cross while theirs a girl walking around in school with a crop top doing nothing about it and have pounds of makeup in their face #notfair. You cant trust anybody in this school not even the administration. I suggest people who are confident to express yourself thats not in the norm dont go here.

Very disappointed in the administration for this school. They have great teachers but the people who run the school are not in the best interest of the children and just coverup for one another. Dont expect accountability, only expect lies and coverups when you have issues. They lied about my daughter making the cheer team after she was bullied and removed her from the cheerleading team and allowed the bullies to be apart of the team but told my daughter, the victim she couldnt attend. From The Principal, to the Assistant Principal to the Guidance Counselor to the Dean all heard my issue and ignored my issue and we reported a bullying claim against the child and the school went 14 days without even documenting the issue even though the Principal, Assistant Principal and Guidance Counselor all stated that it would be filed when the incident happened but were untruthful because I didnt know the official process so I couldnt tell if it had been filed or not. Once contacting DUVAL County School Board (Which only takes the bullying reports and document them.) now all of a sudden they want to handle the bully report like they were supposed to weeks ago, I also reached out to the Charter Schools corporate office and no one ever responded. I left voicemails and emails but no one cared. I literally had the fight for my child to be out the class with the bullys and the administrators were so frustrated that they were removing her that I believe in part thats why they retaliated against my daughter. They say they want parental involvement but when they get it they dont want it. I told them I want to volunteer and Im DUVAL County Approved Volunteer. They have yet to respond. I now know why the morning and afternoon drop off and pickup line is so horrible and I feel its because the administration. They did my child wrong a 10 year old who reported getting bullied and kids were spreading rumors that she had lice in her head and as she was trying out for cheer they were bullying her saying means things. She reports the incidents and are some how removed from the cheer squad because of it. Very poor leadership. I wouldnt recommend this school to anyone although they have great teachers Im now hearing from other parents that theyve had to also remove the kids from the school because they were getting bullied, the administrators turns a blind eye to bullying.

My kids have attended Coastal since they opened. We believe this is the best school for them. They have always felt loved and cared for by the staff. I truly think that teachers at Coastal and the leadership are amazing. The put so much time and dedication into what they do, and it is reflected in the way they treat my kid and me. I appreciate how you see the principal and assistant principal in the car line, walking the kids across Beach Blvd, attending events, they are always present and know my kids by name.

I have been with this school since it opened. Yes, the school drastically changed after covid but didn't every school? So many parents that came on here with negative reviews I can bet left the school and are still unhappy. The school is still a great place to be and is still better then the Duval County Public school system.

I have to refute some of the reviews on here because I feel like the parents who took the time to refute this school had an axe to grind. I am a former public school teacher (grades 6-8). I left the traditional classroom setting in 2017. I say this because the issue of teacher turnover is not unique to this school or this state for that matter. Teacher turnover is a national crisis no matter how much school districts would like us to believe it is not. You have to consider how low teacher pay is, the rampant misbehavior of students, the hazardous conditions given the frequency of major violent incidents, etc. These issues are simply beyond an individual school's control. I think it is unfair to blast Duval Charter at Coastal's administration without looking at these issues holistically.

That being said, there were in fact two incidents that I know of where there was a threat made on the school, and yes I found out an uncomfortable amount of time after the fact. However, this is not unique to Duval Charter at Coastal. It was one of the factors that moved me to leave the field, and I was teaching in a totally different state. It is also quite possible that the administration was advised by higher-ups to not say anything to reduce panic and ensure students and teachers showed up to school. You have to keep in mind that the school's admin answers to a board that oversees multiple schools. The reality is that students being at school means federal dollars (FTE count), and having a massive amount of students not show up hurts their funding. Also, the pipe incident was in fact communicated via text and teacher emails because we were instructed to pick up the kids immediately.

The school strongly encourages parent involvement. In fact, they require 30 hours of volunteer hours per family.

The carline is bad, but you have to keep in mind that this is a charter school that has no buses since students are from all over the county. Literally, every parent has to pick up and drop off their kid. If you find this undesirable, then I suggest choosing a school with bus transportation.

Promoting students who are not ready is also a national problem given legislation that heavily punishes schools for exceeding a certain percentage of retention. It threatens the livelihood of teachers and administrators who really on these data points to keep their jobs. This was the case at every school I taught at out of state. Lastly, middle school fights are par for the course.

This school used to be great when it first opened 6 years ago. We had great teachers and great administration. However about 3 years ago everything changed and teachers and administration changed and teachers started leaving when we got new principals. The lack of communication is awful. Carline is awful. Administration never communicates when students are in danger or when pipes break. Everything bad you find out from students. I would not recommend your student to go here. Middle school fights happen all the time. Bullying happens. You email administration and they never email you back.

My daughter went to this school for 1 year the teacher turnover was absolutely insane. She had 3 teachers in one year she ended up so behind that I had to get her held back. Needless to say we switched schools quick. The crazy thing is she passed and she learned absolutely nothing the whole year she got a bunch of participation grades to make her pass. The school tried to force her to move up when it was clear the whole class learned nothing the the whole year. When we moved schools the teacher said she was definitely not ready to move up and Im so happy we fought so hard (going to the school board) to get her to stay behind. I would recommend not sending your child here. The communication is also horrific things would happen fights and threats of violence towards the school and no parent would hear anything about it you would find out later on Facebook from a mom group. Do your child a favor and send them to another school!

Run form this school. There are so many things wrong that makes it even difficult to express. I only give it 1 star because I have to.
Teachers just don't care. They give out the homework and have the parents teach the kids. THEY JUST DONT CARE. I would not put a child in this school. Principle doesn't care. Just stay away.

My child spent four years (K-3). Quite a few amazing teachers we know left. Now my child left this school and attends our neighborhood school. I don't need to waste 2 hours daily to wait at Coastal just for picking up my child. The communication between teachers and parents is okay. The school has fancy building and nice playground, but the education happening in the classroom is not as nice as the facility.

My son attended this school from 6th-8th grade. He enjoyed it very much. He made connections with many friends and teachers. His grades were well throughout each year. The front office staff were always helpful. My so was on an IEP and every 6 months it was reevaluated. My son felt safe at school.

This school use to be good, but in the last two years, it has gone down hill. Most teachers in their middle school don't say anything to the kids that are verbally abusive. They allow white kids to be called racist when they haven't done or said anything racist. For academics, they don't work with the kids that are struggling. They just have them make test corrections. A lot of the really good teachers have left. We are thinking about moving our son to another school.

First year in Duval Charter at Coastal. School hasn't started yet. But oh boy administrators are lost. A simple car tags they can't properly execute on releasing them. In teachers meet and greet teachers are not will organized and prepared to meet the students amd parents. My daughters teacher was in a hurry to leave whem we got to school and its 130pm. Did not even get to meet all my 6th graders teachers because they are not in the room. Administrators don't communicate wil with parents. Might upate this whem school starts.

My student had comprehension challenges and work load was a lot for him. When we requested a less work load the teacher was not happy and criticize that less work load is why his reading levels are low. They totally ignored he had a language impairment, his evaluation suggested he was Autistic.

I love this school. They have structure and a great staff. The teachers truly care about the students and their success. My kids are very happy here. And, I love that they do not have high turnover with staff. I think it is great that my kids will not have to go to a different school for middle school. They can stay in the same environment to feel safe and confident.
