I give this school zero stars. Kids are not perfect. They make mistakes, and they should absolutely be held accountable for their actions but there is a major difference between discipline and unnecessarily criminalizing a child.

My 16-year-old son was arrested and booked for vaping THC at school. I understand that vaping and bringing substances onto school property are serious matters, and I am not excusing his decision. However, I strongly believe there should have been more consideration for the fact that he is a minor who made a mistake, especially when other students engage in similar behavior.

A school should be a place where children are taught, corrected, disciplined, and given an opportunity to learn from their mistakes not immediately placed into a situation that could potentially follow them as a criminal record.

What concerns me most is the lack of empathy, compassion, and proportionality shown in how this situation was handled. There are disciplinary options, warnings, parent involvement, counseling, suspension, and other consequences that can hold a student accountable without immediately resorting to an arrest.

As a parent, I expected more from Renaissance Academy of Arts and Science. This experience has completely changed my perception of the school. If this is how they choose to handle students who make mistakes, I sincerely worry about what will happen to other children and families in the future.

Hold children accountable, yes. But don’t forget that they are still children who deserve guidance, compassion, and the opportunity to learn from their mistakes.
