As a parent of a child with a disability, I am deeply concerned about how serious incidents were handled at Cooper City Elementary in Broward County Public Schools. Disability-related behaviors were escalated to law enforcement without my prior knowledge. I was not given timely documentation, prior written notice, or transparent communication, and I learned of police involvement from outside sources.

No prompt IEP meeting was offered before external reports were made. Under IDEA and Florida law, parents are entitled to procedural safeguards, including notification and manifestation review when behavior may relate to a disability. In my experience, those safeguards were not properly followed.

Families deserve transparency, lawful procedures, and meaningful collaboration

Cooper city elementary is terrible for kids with Individualized Education Programs. I'd go into more detail but I wouldn't want my family and kids to be targeted again so just trust me on this one. I'm talking about the administrators specifically.

Academically and in terms of safety, this school performs well on paper — and I give credit where it’s due. However, my experience as a Black single mother has been deeply disappointing regarding how the administrative staff interact with both students and parents of color.

There is a noticeable lack of cultural sensitivity and understanding toward single-parent households, particularly Black single mothers who actively advocate for their children. Instead of being met with partnership, concerns are often dismissed, met with resistance, or handled with microaggressive behavior that makes communication uncomfortable and demeaning.

Most concerning is the disregard for privacy and professionalism — staff have openly discussed private matters in front of individuals who are not authorized or directly involved. This creates an unsafe and untrustworthy environment for Black single mothers who should feel supported, not scrutinized. I have met other Black mothers who’ve had similar experiences, many of whom ultimately withdrew their children from the school.

This school has great potential but needs serious improvement in cultural competency, accountability, and respect for all families — especially those from black, single parent housholds. Until then, I would recommend choosing a more inclusive school environment that values and understands single-parent households, particularly those led by Black mothers.

My son is a special needs child who has received amazing support from the school and staff. I am truly amazed by the quality of support I have received for this school.

Coming from personal experience some of the teachers are great and some of the teachers should not be coming over from night before fundraisers hung over trying to teach a class.

No! I do not agree with this at all. My son’s fourth grade teacher belittled him on a daily basis and let the classmates do it as well and turned a blind eye to it. It totally dropped his self-esteem from being a great happy outgoing kid to a sad and worried kid who was afraid of what was going to happen in the classroom day-to-day

My son was being pushed around, belittled, and belittled in the classroom and the teacher did not care because she was doing it as well. I brought it to the principals attention and she told me she would handle it. Monica Schlosser did not make a change in that classroom and I don’t believe that she ever even went to speak to the teacher about it.

The first two years my children attended they did really well. This past year that they had gone my son ended up with a teacher who had come from a low class low income school located in Kissimmee Florida. She catered to the children in her classroom that she felt were of the same background as the school she had came from. That being said my son has a little more than most and she made that known to the classroom and she made him feel bad about that. She was very rude to him belittling demeaning always hurting his self-esteem. She would let the other kids in the classroom do it as well too. My husband tried to speak to her multiple times , she ran to the assistant principal and made my husband out to be some monster who was coming up there to attack her so my husband could never speak to her because she knew what she was doing was wrong and she didn’t want to be called out on it. She was a horrible teacher and I can’t believe she is still there. I also believe that Monica Schlosser needs to step up her game as a principal. If she wasn’t ready for the role then she shouldnt have taken the job. She has no backbone she lets the teachers run all over her and run the school anyway they want. From having fundraisers at bars to having teachers come in hung over from the night before trying to teach students. Unprofessional at its finest if you ask me. ALSO the assistant principal Mr. Pruneda is no better he is a wet mop he just sits there and does nothing until pushed. His favorite past time Is standing up front with the front desk ladies I’m flirting with them all day. Somehow I don’t believe this is in his job description. My final review of the school is a zero. I would give it a -0 if I could. the school is not a great school. Where we have relocated is a great school and my children have thrived.

My daughter deals with ADHD, and the school took significant steps to ensure that she received the best education possible, and that she was dealt with fairly, and that other children were not disrupted. Daughter loves the school.

I remember seeing many signs the children made about bullying put up in the cafeteria. I'm not sure if my daughter made them in the classroom or aftercare. Our daughter experienced some bullying this year and as a family we immediately emailed her teacher who apologized and stated that the issues were being dealt with. Our daughter mentioned that her and this one friend who was the child we heard about all year we're getting along better. Both children have very strong personalities. No parent wants to hear or see their child go through bullying and I believe that school should be a warm, loving place where education is key. Kids will be kids but anything and everything should be done always about saying no to bullying. I hope next year the school will make a bigger deal about this. Possibly parades, or events created.

Our daughter is required to read at least 20 minutes daily along with other weekly homework assignments such as vocabulary sight words study, math worksheets, reading comprehension, writing sentences with sight words/spelling words, poetry journal. Students are responsible to write their homework in their agendas and parents are responsible for signing daily. Parents must do their part in practicing everyday with their children and being on top of them. My daughter is finishing up first grade at a third grade reading level.

Our daughter has had an amazing experience at Cooper City elementary these past two years k-1. Ms. Hayworth and Ms. Hook are remarkable and very available to answer any questions via email or communication by notes/conference.

Our school had a new principal this year and I believe she is really making an effort to be the best or close to what the retired principal was last year. I'm excited for new and to see growth. She personally asked my husband and I as we were leaving an award ceremony the other day if we liked the awards set up in the classroom, which we agreed because we liked the privacy and closeness of the class and the teacher and classmates. Principal really pushes community which is great!

Our daughter seems to really enjoy her school. I love that it's a small school with only about 18-21 kids per class as this allows more one on one and class community. I expect my child to be cared for and not just a number.

I have 2 children at this school and they love it. My daughter went in unable to read and ended up being the best reader in her Kindergarten class! My son came out so knowledgeable about a variety of topics. The teachers are fantastic and they expect a lot from the students...which they should. They are our future:)

Very disappointed with this school. I found that most of the teachers here will say anything to make you believe they care about your child's best interest. I had expressed my concerns regarding some of my child's academic deficits, during conferences, and while both 4th and 5th grade teachers acknowledged the deficits, their response was always the same. They would be happy to consult with the reading specialist and get back with me regarding my concerns. Of course, I heard absolutely NOTHING else from either teacher or the reading specialist. I ended up going outside the school to get my child additional help.

My children started going to school about two weeks ago, now the first week I did feel very well about placing my children in this school because my sons interest took an interest to my son and I was very pleased to see that she was very communicative with me overall I have to say the TEACHER is amazing, however the following week came along and I was trying to reach out to the school in the effort to try to provide my kids a Friday school shirt so they would not feel left out I never received a call back and I went that Friday to vent my frustrations to the front office about the situation now the ladies response at the front desk was "are you sure you called the school?" Because we would have told you what was the procedure into getting a shirt and then followed with a snippy attitude referring to a blue page in the back of registration form and stated that it was in the registration packet.

Organic lunches at this school are delivered by Tiny Meals. This is a great school and they accept organic school lunches made by Tiny-Meals.com. Cooper City Elementary is a small school with 790 students and a caring staff.

Coming from another country I have to say Cooper City Elementary is very good! sometimes parent-teacher communication is non- existent but I think that is a norm in a US public school. Not knowing exactly what to expect this, our first year, was difficult. Sometimes we did not acknowledge that parents can join children to certain activities and found no one to tell us in advance that parents were allowed, we know is difficult but coming from a private out of the US school, it was easier to communicate with teachers even in higher grades, but overall the school is very good. Thank you

My 5 children went to Cooper City elementary in the 80s and 90s and now my grandchildren attend there. They definitely cater to the smarter children, while those who need a little extra help or time to understand certain subjects, get left behind. The ESE program needs improvement and some of the teachers do little to help instill confidence in those children who need it most. I understand that budget cuts may be blamed for some of the problems, but teachers and staff should try concentrating more on the shy, quiet kids who need a little extra help. The smart kids will always do well.

My daughter has been at the school for 5 years. She is in 4th grade moving to 5th. We love the school and the staff. All of her teachers have been great and easy to communicate with. This year she had a new teacher to the school, Miss Rodgers. She is excellent. My daughter really likes her and she was fast to answer any of my concerns. The office staff is very helpful. We have used the aftercare for the past 4 years and my daughter is very happy there. Often times telling me to come later to pick her up.

I am very disapointed with this school, most of the staff are rude and careless. My dauther has been bullied by the "popular girls" and after repeated visits with the teacher nothing has been done. it is obvious that the teacher is indiferent to my daughter and the girls sence this, so they try to hurt her as much as they can by taking her stuff and they know they won't be reprehended. They said nothing can be done which is okay, but at least they should fake that a conversation will take place prohibiting this kind of behavior but they didn't even bother. I was screamed at because my daughter had a phone that she was't supposed to have. Instead of them maybe pretending to care or work something out? But again, that would be too much to ask from the faculty at this school.

My son has been a student of Cooper City Elementary for 5 years (he is currently in 4th grade; has been attending since Kindergarten). One of the reasons we moved to Cooper CIty was for the schools in the town. Let me just say that we could not have asked for a better school for our son. The Teachers and staff go above and beyond for the welfare of our son. Any child would be lucky to attend this school.

Phenomenal school! Administration does a wonderful job of keeping parents informed. Teachers are doing great at transitioning to Common Core Standards. My children are challenged and we are so happy!

The school restored all specials this year: Art, Music, PE, and Media. Students visit computer lab weekly. All classes are meeting class size. Our family is happy to be a Cub!

This school has suffered from cut backs. There is no PE, no art and no creativity in the curriculum. Science is taught by reading, rather than hands on. Teaching to the FCAT and other testing is the focus. I have had one or more kids in this school since 1998 and I have witnessed its decline. Students are no longer taught to be creative thinkers. They are taught to pass standardized tests.

I have been very sad to see the specials go. There was a great art program, computer lab teacher, and science program which are all gone now. The students are only receiving core classes and it is impacting their balance.
