Overall I feel the Reading Edge Academy is a really good school. I like that its semi private being a charter school. The communication and involvement from not just the teachers but the whole office is exceptional. I feel like I know everyone from Mrs Haner to Mrs Smith to Mrs Walton, to Mrs Smart and the list goes on. Really great school I have one attending this year , and 2 next year so Go Dolphins!

Wonderful and safe school.
We love that the staff and faculty know our son by his first name. We appreciate the uniforms to remove biass, stop bully in its tracks, and reinforce respect for each other.
I have volunteered several times and all the children are courteous and well-mannered.
We appreciate the curriculum and the additional support to help our son be a stronger reader.

Reading Edge has been an absolute blessing. My little girl has learned so much so quickly. The teachers are very attentive and truly take the time to make sure your child is excelling in class. They make sure your child is meeting their goals. I highly recommend this school.

I had been hearing great things about REA for a while. This is my sons first year attending and I can 100% agree, this school is amazing! Teachers and staff are very friendly, they are familiar with all the children and have great communication with parents. The curriculum is great and they provide the children with any help that is needed for them to succeed in school. My son is in Kindergarten and already reads stories and writes on his own! I also like the amount of parent involvement in this school.

My son has been attending for 3 years. All the staff have been a big component in his success. From his kindergarten teacher giving him more challenging assignments to first grade encouraging speech therapy and his second grade teacher informing me that he is understanding the content just not the best test taker. My only complaint is the turn around for teachers which is no fault to the school.

My granddaugher Peyton has been going to Reading Edge for two year. She loves the teachers and staff and specially how friendly everyone is to her. She loves also how everyone know her name. She loves getting out of the truck and going into the breakfast every morning

I am waiting to see how the school will do with new leadership. I will say I am not very happy with Communication with the Teachers. I appreciate that they use Remind however I feel like when it comes to important conversations they are not had. For myself with my third grader the teacher does not communicate and goes as far as to not ever give eye contact when we see each other every day in parent pickup. Instead of trying to engage and work with my above average child as other teacher have in the past there. She has chosen to have my child bring in a book to read when she is done with her work. I wish that the teacher would provide work that would challenge and engage my child. When it comes to children that are either above average or below I think the school lacks. I appreciate the ESE teacher but if all teachers are not on board and willing to work together with the parent and child then the end result for the child is not met. If any feedback is given in regards to the 4th grade teacher it is then used as a weapon and my child is punished. I feel like instead of being that way maybe try to see it from the student and parents point of view and meet in the middle. I am in no way saying my child is perfect. They are perfectly imperfect. My children are still attending the school and will continue because the school is at this moment a better alternative than where they are assigned to go. I am holding out hope that things will get better for both of my students and all students that attend REA.

My son has gone to REA for two years and we'd say that this year he's more engaged in reading. He says his teacher Mrs. Newell makes jokes and it helps him remember. Thanks Mrs. Newell for making learning fun.
Also I'd like to thank Mrs. Plummer and Mrs. Smith for always keeping the lines of communication open to let me know how small groups are going and if my son seems off...thank you for noticing.

My family and I love reading edge , my daughter has been going since kindergarten and she is now in 5th grade . The teachers are wonderful and the staff work so hard to keep the kids and the school a happy and safe place to be.

I have a 2nd grader in the school and she comes home excited everyday, explaining all the fun things she did and what they are learning in the class. Her sister will also be joining the school for the next school year. The teachers and front office are always easy to get a hold of and always available to answer any questions I may have.

This is my daughters first year, she is in kindergarten. The teachers and school staff have been amazing to work with. They are great with providing information anytime a question is asked.

No free play time to build character. Only time they can do it is during PE, but that isn't enough time as they have to also learn skills.

Homework is not assigned resulting in no visibility to what or how your child is doing in school and not knowing how to help them when needed. It is a just another way of avoiding communication with parents and not taking any responsibility in the students performance. They avoid progress report meetings and purposely do not test for advanced levels to avoid having to do more work or having anyone disagree with their assessments.

Teachers avoid talking to parents and report low on progress reports for advanced students just to try to increase overall progress scores at end of year. They do the very minimum to get by and are not available to parents. The turnover at the school is extremely high with the best teachers leaving after a short time because they are clearly not happy with the administration.

This is impossible because the kids are not allowed any social time. There is no recess (5 min), they have to inhale their lunch and talking is not allowed ever. They do not have the opportunity to build relationships.

The vice president YELLS at the students and threatens them as a tactic to get them to seemingly behave. These kids are not allowed to have fun. They have promised a playground for years with fundraisers and have never come through. Where is the money for the playground? Kids have only 5 minutes of recess and the teachers get to leave early in the day making having a full time job impossible and even earlier every Wednesday. Truly disappointing.

I have a child who is advanced in learning and they do nothing to support this. They don't even have a designated room in the facility for a gifted teacher from the county to come into the school and teach like the other schools. Therefore if you have a gifted child they actually can't provide the county gifted program. You would have to move your child to another school.

It's been nothing but a downhill experience. Have been there several years and will not be back. Enrollment is down, teachers are down, administration is absolutely terrible and the leaders should be terminated. They do not communicate as a way of not being held accountable. Do not take your child to this school.

Reading Edge Academy has always met the needs of my very bright and motivated child. The parents and children are well behaved and courteous of one another due to the great quality of instruction and love of all the teachers and administration.

Principal is only there no more than half of the time and therefore does not seem to have a clue as to what is going on or more precisely what is not going on. Consequently the Reading Edge Academy ranking has been dropping and it now has fallen from the top in the Florida State rankings for elementary schools to the point that it is now ranked in the lower 50% group.
This year alone it dropped 177 spaces in the state rankings based on the FCAT test results. In my opinion, the Principal and the Asst. Principal need to get their act together.

Reading Edge Academy has now dropped into the BOTTOM HALF of the over 2000 elementary schools in the state of Florida based on the results of the statewide FCAT tests.
It appears to be in disarray as the Principal is rarely there more than half of the time. This year alone it dropped 177 places in the state rankings based on the FCAT test results. The Principal is splitting her time between two schools that are far apart. and it seems to be taking a toll on both schools

I randomly came in to take a tour of this school, and talk to their assistant principal regarding my reasons for changing schools for my child. I was impressed by her genuine caring personality. Within days of starting kindergarten at Reading Edge, I saw a complete transformation of my child's perspective on learning, as well as his behavior. I am so impressed and thankful for my child's teacher, assistant teacher and all of the staff at Reading Edge. I could not have dreamed up a better school. I wholeheartedly recommend Reading Edge with the utmost confidence. They are wonderful!

REA has always been on my radar since my grand daughters were to young to attend. I liked the school, the staff, and the fact the children are not running around in the halls. When my grand daughter were of age and started in kindergarden I fell in love with the school. You hear a lot of negative responses about charter school but REA is an excellent school, to bad it only goes up to the fifth grade.

I moved here almost 3 years ago and my first stop was a public school. I was so mortified at the way we were treated I would have chosen to home school my son rather then send him to our local public school. I initially thought REA was a private school and was so happy and relieved to find out that all we had to do was volunteer at the school! Most importantly my son loves all of the teachers and he is learning skills he can use in the real world!

At our school I am impressed with the quality of instruction. I have seen other schools in action, and I have never seen such a dedicated staff. The concern for each child and their needs exceeds all others. The commitment to the growth of each student is apparent in the classroom, on the P.E. court, in other special areas, and walking the halls.

I am both a teacher and a parent at this school and have been MORE than pleased! The staff has been warm, welcoming, and inviting since becoming a part of the family! As both a parent and teacher - I was NOT happy with the traditional public school situation for myself, nor my son! Our world has changed because of this school! We are both so happy with school and work! The project based learning concepts that this school uses helps children reach their highest potential in their own time! The progress indicators that are used in replacement of traditional grades - helps students realize that they CAN learn - and they don't HAVE to learn at the same rate as their peers! I highly recommend The Reading Edge Academy !

I find this school very well organized from the front office staff right to the cafeteria staff and everyone in between. This school has made such a great difference in my son's education and I am so glad I made the move here. The teachers and administration are very caring about the student's success. The Reading Edge Academy is the best charter school in volusia county. Teachers care about students individually and present a strong academic program, which is both relevant and rigorous to today's classrooms. Administrators and educators at the Reading Edge Academy are friendly people. Walking through the hallways and classrooms throughout the school, one can see students are in a caring and safe learning environment. Educators care about their students and provide both positive verbal and tangible praise for doing their work. If you want your child to go to the best charter school and you live in or near DeBary, Florida, this is the best school to select!

Having served as an elementary school teacher, assistant principal and principal for forty-four years in NC, MD and FL, I am proud to be an administrator at Reading Edge Academy public charter elementary school. This school has a great track record from its origin in 1998, and I have found that students and parents benefit greatly from this school's curriculum offerings that are aligned with the district and state guidelines and are further enhanced by the focus on reading throughout the curriculum. As a parent, grandparent and current Assistant Principal here at REA, I would strongly consider the quality education provided by this charter school (grades K-5).

Reading academy is not organized at all. In the morning the front desk is empty even though they have cameras everywhere anybody could walk in. In the cafeteria they only have one person watching the kids until about 7:30-7:35 that another adult comes to help. I have witness kids walking out the cafeteria. Not organized at all. I don't recommend this school to nobody. I took both of my child out just been there for 2 months.

My daughter went to this school for kindergarten. A first I loved the school until her teacher got pregnant. After she became pregnant she became rude and arrogant. She degraded my child and myself, never had anything positive to say about the kids she taught and just over all was not a healthy environment for my child. The front staff and principal are beyond arrogant and are so money hungry it's not funny. THE CHILDREN PLAY IN A RETENTION POND FOR GODS SAKE... the after school teacher yells at the kids the whole time and gave my child peanut butter after my daughter and I said shes highly allergic ending up in $5000 hospital bill. Do not send your child here if you are concerned with their education.

My son went to Reading Edge for K-1 grade. I loved his teachers both years he attended and they did a great job making sure the advanced students were challenged and the average or struggling students weren't forgotten either. That being said, I was not happy with most of the staff there. They come across as having an attitude that they are above needing to be courteous to parents, There usually was never much smiling, sometimes an attitude if asked questions like you were annoying them, and even times I went in the office and was completely ignored for several minutes while the staff chatted among themselves right in front of me.(and about things that had NOTHING to do with school) I also had issues with getting return phone calls. My son was at the top of his class and above grade level with all of his testing, but yet didn't get acknowledged for the gifted program and when I tried reaching out to find out the reason, I NEVER got a call back. I called in the weeks prior to school starting and STILL haven't heard back, now three weeks into school. I would have no issue if he didn't qualify, but would like to at least get a call back to explain to me why. I would not recommend RE.

Although this school is a "A " school i believe that staff are very arrogant, old fashioned and unfriendly. These teachers look overworked and stressed out. I have witnessed a lot of rudeness towards the kids. My child's teacher wasn't even at work most of the time. They ask for mandatory volunteer hours (30) and do not respect the fact that some parents do work full time and are not able to come and volunteer their time. I sent multiple donations for classroom projects and activities every $10 spent = 1hr and they want you to provide a receipt! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? i don not mind sending things to teachers for classroom activities but they ask for something every week!! Terrible location, parent pick up and drop off is Chaos

My children have attended Reading Edge since they entered into kindergarten. I pulled them out due to relocating to another city and enrolled them in our zoned public school. There was a dramatic difference in the way my children learned and behaved and needless to say I am putting them back into Reading Edge. You can not put a price on our childrens education, I hope to see the middle school develop as well. It will be a blessing to have a continuance after the 5th grade.

Is the aspiration of academic administration simply to build or run an organization? Or is it an opportunity to encourage, support, sponsor, and enable it's parts? Education is a partnership; teachers, students, parents and administration where the later has a responsibility to guide; building vision, values, and orchestrating a means for open communication. Actively listening and learning. Essentially administration is for serving and not 'running' an organization. Positive change is happening and I'm hoping for more to come.

If you want specialized attention given to your child, like a private school, but can't afford it, Reading Edge is the place. My child started school above average and has maintained if not exceeded his already high potential. I was afraid he would get lost in the shuffle and not challenged and that wasn't the case with REA. They have challenged and hightened his interest in Reading, Math and learning in general.
