The teachers at Learning Gate are amazing! They are creative, caring, and truly dedicated to helping every child thrive. One of the many things I value about this school is the opportunity for every child to experience learning outside the walls of a traditional classroom! Students learn through hands-on experiences in outdoor classrooms and a living garden that is much more than a place to grow plants; it's a vibrant learning space where children explore native habitats, care for chickens, observe pollinators and wildlife, and discover how all living things are connected.

Learning Gate's belief that Nature is Our Best Teacher comes to life every day. From participating in bird banding and witnessing migration up close to exploring the relationships between plants, animals, and people, students experience learning in meaningful and memorable ways. It's a unique environment that sparks curiosity, builds confidence, and fosters a lifelong appreciation for the natural world. I couldn't imagine a better place for children to learn and grow.

This school promotes a mission centered on environmental education and a supportive learning community. Unfortunately, our experience did not match this promise.

Administrative response is inconsistent and limited in communication when challenges arise. Issues involving student support were often addressed without clear explanations, timely responses, or transparent processes. ESE services are inconsistent and support is provided in an ad-hoc rather than a systematic way. Administration prefers working with families they already know or families who parrot positive messaging. That means if you ever have any challenges at all, they will treat you as the problem. If you and your children are in the box, you might be ok. If you aren't, please save yourself the pain and go elsewhere.

Families considering this school should ask detailed questions about communication practices, how the school supports students with diverse needs, and how its environmental mission is implemented in practice.

Im very disappointed in the overall environment and structure of this school. While it presents itself as a nature-based, supportive community, my experience has been quite the opposite. The education system lacks true support for students who are struggling, and theres very little follow-through from teachers or staff when it comes to helping them improve their grades or emotional well-being.

The school does not handle bullying situations appropriately. Instead of resolving conflicts or providing counseling and understanding, they tend to issue in-school suspensions (ISS), which only remove students from class and their education. Staff often assume the student is lying rather than listening or investigating with empathy. Theres a pattern of adults asserting authority rather than modeling fairness or integrity.

The environment itself feels tense many staff members appear stressed or even angry when interacting with students or parents. Theres a lack of respect and patience for children, and this creates an unsafe emotional atmosphere. The school building is also not very clean, and the nature-based approach advertised by the school seems misleading. Outside of the occasional kayaking activity (about once a month), theres very little connection to nature in the actual curriculum or daily routine.

Unfortunately, this school does not live up to its mission or promises. I strongly recommend that any parent considering this school do thorough research, especially regarding incidents that have affected its reputation and funding in the past. Until significant changes are made to the educational and behavioral support systems particularly around bullying prevention and staff accountability I cannot recommend this school.

I'm a current student here at learning gate. Learning gate was very lovely during elementary school. Now during middle school, we do the same things every day in class, nothing ever is new. They don't do much about bulling other than giving out an infraction which doesn't really stop any body from being mean. Learning gate has 1 Counceller for each campus, but it's not enough, almost anything to tell them they will contact your parents and it's like you have no privacy. Things at learning gate always seem to be broken. we use our cafeteria as a gym. I have 5th period PE, and that is when the 8th graders eat lunch. We have to wait 10-20 minutes in the pe classroom everyday just to start pe because they eat where we play. I recommend having you child go to Learning Gate until 6th grade, then pull them. They have 2 campuses, keep them at Hanna campus but don't let them go to LLF. Learning Gate at LLF campus has a very bad bulling problem. I hoped this helped.

I went here for six years. The elementary school was unique, it was good so long as students don't have any kind of learning disability. The middle school is horrible. Although there are a few amazing teachers, most are below average. They provide no support for students struggling mentally and do not grade fairly or respect 504 plans.

The middle school is not a good school. I worked there for a couple of years and found they teach to the lowest common denominator, and rarely, if ever, challenge their students. In the middle school they prioritize weekly activities that take significant time away from academics and often serve to divide and isolate a large percentage of the student body. There is little, if any, communication between teachers on the 7th grade level, and 8th grade teachers are virtually absent during transition periods, allowing for wild, often uncontrolled passing disrupting 7th grade lessons. Multi-day fireld trips are scheduled for the day or days before major tests, with little emphasis on preparation and review. The school did not accept its last grade (2020-2021) because it dropped. There is a huge annual teacher turnover, and some teachers switch grades and subjects because "they have always wanted to try it." Lutz Prep, Sunlake, and Lutz K-8 are much better choices.

I love the fact they don't overload them with homework. That later parents end up doing their projects. All projects are done on campus. They strongly recommend reading every night. And they bring math and vocabulary assignment. Also, they facilitate many resources online for them to do at home.
Xtra Math, Prodigy, Khan academy, Myon, etc.

I have three boys and all of them have a great character. I know that it starts at home but it takes a village to raise a child. I strongly believe that the healthy environment that the school has, had helped my kids to be who they are today. They are very respectful of people and the environment and helpful to younger kids and their peers. Learning gate has impressed that traits qualites on them.

My kid had an issue with bullying and at soon as the teachers were aware they addressed it. Parents of the kids were called. The kid wrote a letter of apology to my child. I was very pleased.

Excellent. I love this school. It is amazing. A healthy environment for kids. They learn by experience. I love the field trips, the garden, and how parents are involved and teachers are approachable. My oldest kid is going into high school. He loves this school. He has been since kindergarten and he felt that the school always care about him academically, physically and emotionally.
I recommend highly this school.

Our teachers (7 in total between 2 children) have been thoughtful and attentive to our children's differing needs. It would be presumptuous and asinine for me to think any teacher could fully address all of his/her students needs, and I feel they have done a good job of communicating with me as the parent when issues do arise.

Excellent. I love the creative and nature-focused learning experience my children are getting at LGCS. This may not be the school for every family: the parent involvement requirements are high and curriculum is more hands-on than book-based in some cases. But for those families that want to embrace an educational experience rather than simply sending their children to school, it is awesome!

Not at all because of the school leadership the ideals are in place but not enforced at all. Bullying is a HUGE problem at this school and nothing changes. I dont think kids are capable of doing anything to be kicked out so remove your good kids for their safety both mental and physical.

It is clear the teachers at LGCS love their jobs and are committed to their students' success. Teacher retention is very, very high. We have had our child at the school for 4 years and every teacher has been rigorous and caring.

My child is learning about nature -- and to care for himself, his peers, and the planet. He is learning eco responsibility. The school says it teaches the 'whole child,' which I see every day. When I pick up my child from aftercare, other students hold open the door for me, say 'excuse me,' and say good bye to each other.

Been very happy with the school for the last 10 years! I have had two of my children all ready out of Learning Gate and have 2 in there now, with 2 more future LG's! So far the school has gone thru changes throughout the years, but over all I LOVE this school and don't want my children to ever have to leave here!! I have one that is ADHD and one that has high functioning Autism and they seem to fit in just fine!! The teachers at this school are beyond amazing!! It's not your average school. It's based on nature and if you don't come home dirty then you didn't have a good day!! All I can say is it's the best school that I have ever seen and I'm glad to say that my kids go there!!!

Another thing I have had to deal with in the past and I like to say they are quick to help resolve issues now. In the past around 7-10 years ago, not so much. I struggled with this then and almost pulled my child out. Now they work on welcoming new students and there is new students all the time, so the kids aren't as clicky as they were back in the days. They also have the children working with other grades as well so this makes the children learn patience and getting along with peers. I'm not going to say that no one will ever get bullied, as it happens, but I think they are much more on top of things these days.

Still working on receiving my child's IEP...a little slow but not due to them, it's due to the county. They have been great at getting my child RTI and moving him up to 3 right away. The teacher is amazing at keeping him included in the classroom activities even thou he is behind and has speech issues. I feel this school has been amazing with helping my son learn!

Yes they teach manners and I don't recall ever encountering a child that goes here that didn't treat parents/teachers with respect. I mean of course all kids have their moments, but LG kids are excepted to act like LG kids! They seem to be above a standard public school child any day rather it be respect, compassion, or integrity!

My children have been going to this school since Kindergarten and we love the school overall. The teachers really care about the kids and the atmosphere is very positive. As with all schools, some teachers click better than others, but overall, the teachers here work hard to give the kids a great education. My only real concern with this school is the gifted program. This program has had many changes over the years with teacher turnover. In the past, the gifted program focused on technology, then an additional teacher was added who left midyear. The focus was technology (with various technical issues) and switched to geography with a new teacher midyear. A different new teacher (along with one who stayed) this year and the focus has now become science. The problem is that the science has taken the place of their regular science class. I am not alone in having concerns about the effectiveness of this as a replacement to their regular well-run 5th grade science class.

We are just finishing our first year of kindergarten at Learning Gate and have been beyond thrilled with the school overall. The school goes far beyond the typical work book curriculum.

They bring the children to the gardens, where they grow fruits and vegetables, care for the chickens and learn about sustainability. They explore the woods on hikes to search for bugs and animals, measure trees and band birds.

I think they are adjusting well to the curriculum requirements and changes, my daughter testing well above the Hillsborough county average. Her teacher did a good job with breakout reading groups and identifying specific student levels. She would appropriately challenge her with areas she could improve upon in math. Science is hand down the schools super strength, she recites planets, animal classes, and environmental facts not just the knowledge but with a true understanding. Her class started the year growing tadpoles and I've watched them release butterflies they raised from caterpillars they found outside.

The campus is a beautiful place to be and an experience you must feel for yourself. Classes feel like small families, you get to know every child and most of the parents very well.

I always say go with your gut when making the difficult decision of choosing the right school. This school isn't for everyone but it is perfect for our family and both of our girls! Looking forward to having one start first grade and the other kindergarten next year.

Some of their after school clubs include: swimming, yoga, glee, Magic Tree house book club etc. Our field trips this year were gym/play place, beach (and Seabird Sanctuary), the Lowry Park Zoo and Lettuce Park.

Learning Gate is truly a unique and wonderful place! Kids get to be kids, explore nature, appreciate the outdoors, get dirty, and have fun! Both of my kids look forward to school every day. I am very appreciative of the fact that Learning Gate is not obsessed with FCAT testing and other standardized tests. The kids do take the tests, but the teachers don't stress the kids out over them. My daughter got a perfect score on her FCAT reading test, without all the ridiculous obsessive preparation they do in traditional public schools. Some of our favorite things the kids get to do include growing and tasting fruits and vegetables in the huge garden, bird banding, and community service projects. The school also has a great gifted program! The princi al is very personable and always has her door open for parents! We are so happy to be a part of the Learning Gate family!

Principal at this school is tremendous if there Are any issues with your child. We found that teachers were hit or miss however. Very nice but some not very prepared or as strong as others from a curriculum perspective. Our kids began the year a little ahead of age requirements and are ending the year a little behind.

This is my 5th year with LG. I continue to love the atmosphere and environmental setting of the school. I like the innovative ways the school works to save money (no trash lunch program) and help the students and families become more "green" in and out of the school. I enjoy the level on communication school wide and personally with my teachers. They are always willing to answer to any concern and work with me. I waited two years for this school and have been involved for the last five years, it was worth the wait.

Learning Gate is a Special Place! As a long time parent I have seen the ups & downs. I definitely see this new principal as a positive and much needed addition to our school! The previous administrator was out of site & out of touch, ruling with a reign of intimidation. With the growth of the school some things have changed, but I still see more positives than negatives. My children still receive a quality education and get the many outdoor learning experiences that drew us to the school. The new changes to aftercare are also very exciting, more structure and guided play is making for a better environment for my kids, they say it is in their words "way better!" We are excited to see what transpires this year. My children are excited to go to school everyday & come home with that same enthusiasm. We have been very blessed to find such a great place for our kids to learn!

This is our fourth year at Learning Gate and I can confidently say things are changing...and not necessarily for the better. I'm definitely not impressed with the leadership of the school or the administration. School communication is marginal at best. That special feel on the campus has disappeared and there's a overwhelming air of concern for the future of Learning Gate Community School. For the most part, teachers are great although, there are a handful of instructors who really should consider another career path. I'm really having to reevaluate going forward with this school. It's sad, in its hay day this school was special.

Our children have gone here for the last 6 years.I really liked it for my one son but not the other. It depends on your child and I think they have made a lot of improvements on children being taught to accept other children in their group then they did in 2007. All in All the school I think is excellent. The no trash rule is a little annoying...ok very annoying, how is this teaching children to recycle when they are taught that they can't use a trash can? but I love how the school brings the parents and kids together. I have had a great experience with my younger child going here for the last 6 years and he has made lots of friends. The new principle is very nice and has went out of her way to help some of the students. As for my older child, he just never got accepted in any click and didn't have a wonderful experience. The teachers are great at Learning Gate, however the Gates (middle and High) brought in some new teachers that I think they should have been a little more picky on choosing the right ones for this school. The principle over there is great too and easy to approach. If your looking for a change in schools this is the place to choose. I will miss it afterwards.

We are finishing our 2nd year at Learning Gate after leaving a traditional public school. So far we just love the teachers and experience in general. I have one over achiever and one with A.D.D. Both of my kids just love the school and are doing exceptionally well. They both love the amount of time they spend outside during the day. The campus is beautiful. Most of the land is in it's natural state and the school uses the grounds as an opportunity to teach. In addition to academics, the school has an environmental theme. My children are learning all about recycling and composting. They collect rain water and grow gardens. Learning is very hands-on. They are planning to build a high school a couple miles away from the current campus. I noticed the comment about the principle being unapproachable, we have had the exact opposite experience. Usually when I go on campus she is in the office area and is always very friendly. I wouldn't send my children anywhere else!

My parents put me in this school for daycare before I was even a year old and I attended until 8th grade. Overall I had a mixed experience here, the elementary and pre-school were great in my opinion but once you hit middle school things start going downhill. After 5th grade we no longer got any physical education, the administration started to make promises that were never fulfilled, and their 'project based learning' is just a big waste of time that the students used to finish homework they didn't do and play on the computer rather than making actual projects. Among other things they have terrible planning skills when it comes to expanding and I had to spend an entire year with class in the cafeteria because they had nowhere else to put us. I spent 14 years at this school and they didn't even give the 8th graders a proper graduation because they're opening their own high school which is also poorly planned out as far as space goes.The lack of loyalty they show is extremely saddening. If I were to do it all again I don't think I'd stick around for middle school.

I have 2 children at LG, and it's a mixed bag. As previous reviewers have said, not every school is ideal for every child. The school doesn't emphasize academics, and my gifted children are generally bored from an academic standpoint. We've also encountered problems with bullying, and the current principal is either unwilling or unable to put a stop to it. She is generally unapproachable and uninterested in receiving any parental input. The administration disbanded the parent association two years ago, which says a lot. None of my children's teachers have done much to differentiate instruction for the varying academic needs of their students, but I've heard that there are teachers who do so. Our personal experience has been that the school caters largely to students with special needs (behavioral issues, ADD, etc.) at the expense of the other students. LG offers no foreign language, no music, and no art until 4th grade. PE is 2x/week, and garden and environmental education are 1x/week. The campus is amazing, and most teachers genuinely care about their students. I like that the school is small, but wish that academics were a higher priority. Pls do your homework before you come!

After several years in Pasco public schools, my kids were lucky enough to be accepted into Learning Gate and Gates. My kids went from seeing school as an obligatory chore to looking forward to what exciting lesson they will experience each day. I love that my kids are learning more than reading and writing here and that are becoming responsible stewards of their environment. The transformation in just 2 years has been amazing to watch and I am so excited about the interesting and wonderful people my kids are becoming with the nurturing and positive influence from Learning Gate and Gates. We feel blessed to be a part of this school community.

Way over rated and not parent friendly. Not very sure how much of a quality education my child got as the teacher was fresh out of college and did not seem to have a clue as to how to explain material. If you are just looking to segregate your child in a non diverse and homogeneous environment, then this is for you. Be prepared to pay an extra price for this "public" school.

Our son attends Learning Gate since 2nd Grades. This school is great fit for him who loves nature and wants to be a marine biologist. When it comes to education, one shoe does not fit all. This school is not regular public school or private school. Learning Gate's achievements as a school speaks a lot, but unfortunately all publicity and recognitions make parents want to send theirs children without doing homework - do your research, understand what kind of learning fits your child. I am sad to see negative comments on this site, most of them are caused by lacking of parent's research. One of the comment especially caught my eyes : "I graduated this year and am glad to be leaving after 9 yrs". What were her parents thinking? Sending her to the school she does not like for 9 yrs when other options were available? WHY??? If you are looking for a school your child thrive, you need to do homework. Children do not lean or thrive if learning is not fun. Do not expect the school does what you wish for. Involvement of parents makes difference no matter which school your child attends.

My son attended this school for years until we moved. My daughter also attened for a time. Most of the teachers are very good, but there are some that could use some people skills. The homework is minimal in elementary, which I appreciated. The kids loved school. That is my reason for 5 starts more than anything...they get the kids to love learning (which should be a goal of every school). Volunteer hours are required so parents are involved, but I think many would be anyway. It is a good environment for the most part..."good" influences on my children. Aftercare is not good (only 2 stars for it). Unless you have to, do not put your kids in LG aftercare program. The kids are mostly on their own with little structure and passive supervision. The office staff is also not helpful, and parents have this is common (and chat about it frequently). Even with borderline emergency situations, the staff is not helpful. That said, I would enroll my kids there again in a heartbeat because they learn an adequate amount (I have gifted kids and they do get bored because they aren't always challenged) -- but they LOVE it there.

Don't believe all the hype. My children have attended Learning Gate and Gates for the past several years. The school is more concerned about being "Green" and receiving accolades than anything else. They even make the children bring home their garbage in their lunchbox. No trash cans for students but, yes for teachers. They have no gym and no sports (neither does Gates). They wait for donations to buy necessary materials but, have no problem spending the money elsewhere like a "Green" building. All of the older comments about the principal are correct. However, the new principal is much better. The downside is that the old principal (and founder) still advises and has a say in everything. She is the most unfriendly, rude and ungrateful person. Pressure is put on parents and children to donate to their annual giving campaign. A high number of parenting hours are required. Bullying is out of hand. It's not at all what their loyal followers say.

This is our 2nd year at L.G. My children just love the entire school experience. I love how much time they spend outside and engaged in hands-on learning.
