I would not recommend coming to this school they hire all of the bad teachers and and fire the good teachers .Most of these teachers will just hand you a packet and tell you to do it and not teach you.

I would stay as far away from this school if you are concerned about your child's education. If you would like your child to succeed this is not the place. Turnover is prevalent and the ones that stay are either burned out or trying their hardest to just stay afloat (not saying that every staff member is negative because there is always going to be a handful of positive influences). The car line is run so inefficiently and we have observed children hanging out of the windows of cars and sunroofs and when reported to the principal nothing was done. If you are looking for that amazing charter school program this is not the place in my opinion.

Looking for a small school that feels like family-We totally recommend Athenian Academy Clearwater. It has a private school feel with not so many kids. Clean, smells great,Awesome overall staff around. Everyone is so involved in caring for the kids, whether its lunch staff or PE, or the nicest guidance counselor they're all there to help. Front staff is always so helpful, welcoming, care about the kids and will help with anything quickly . Principal and Vice principal are phenomenal, so involved, such care for the students,staff and parents. Any questions or issues, it is resolved quickly. The teachers are engaging. Very hands on, helping the kids progress,building leaders, improving their strengths, creating a great environment they can grow in. Great curriculum. We love they are being taught Spanish as well. We're overjoyed sports are being brought back.Very involved resource officer on staff. The preschool is awesome as well, Need a VPK- definitely check them out. They get the kids extra ready for kindergarten. Great before /after care program. PTA is great, getting the parents involved and focusing on great ways to raise money for the school.My children have enjoyed going here for the last 3 years. Highly recommend.

If I could I would have given this school a zero star rating, teachers have no clue what they are doing, and my kids are barely learning anything. The principle is always gone and no clue what she is doing! I do NOT recommend this school.

Our child completed KG with Mrs. Noonan and we couldnt be happier being part of the Athenian family. Mrs. Hershelman defined AA as the place "where our babies will be loved like they are our own." And, she and her team have held true to this promise. Mrs. Noonan is an exceptional, dedicated teacher! Mrs. Noonan and the administration at Athenian understand that it takes a village to raise wonderful children that turn in to strong, smart, compassionate, successful adults.
In my opinion, the negative reviews are a direct result of Athenian doubling in size. Athenian continues to adjust, recuperate, recalculate; however, you define it. Athenians cheese was moved in a HUGE way; and with great change, comes pain, and ultimately leads to great success!
A word about test scores - Test scores are important; but they arent everything! There is ample research to support the hypothesis that standardized tests do not measure student success. This school is focused on the students individual needs, not just a number dictated by the state. Personally, we chose Athenian because they stressed, so deeply, how our child's education was about the child; not a group as a whole. Each child is different, with unique needs. If you want a school that recognizes those differences and will truly love your child - you have come to the right place.
The one thing that the new administration needs to improve on is communication. We always felt well informed by Mrs. Noonan. However, there were many times when we experienced mixed or changing messages outside of the classroom. I know that the administration and the PTSA are actively working on this and I appreciate all their efforts; however, it really MUST change this year. Communication and teamwork is paramount! Administration and the PTSA need to work as a team to stay connected to parents and students. We should be over informed of everything/anything having to do with the school. If you want more parent involvement, ask for it, communicate expectations, ask parents what their expectations are of you, and then together lets stick to that plan! Parents reading thiswe need you, admin and PTSA cant do it alone!

This school is amazing! I have recommended Athenian Academy to several parents and they have been extremely happy with the level of education their children have received! I encourage any parent to take a tour at the other elementary schools in the area, and then come and take a tour at Athenian -there is no comparison!

I can't begin to say enough about Mrs. Noonan! We were apprehensive when looking for schools and especially since this was our first experience leaving our kindergartner in someone else's hands. But she made us feel comfortable from the very beginning. She is very patient, caring and most of all my daughter has soared academically.

Ms. Mizzi is an incredible team leader for the middle school. She always has an open door policy that if you want to come in and share your concerns with her, she is always open to listen. Her leadership demonstrates that she follows through with your concerns and pro-actively works to meet the needs of the students - personally. Ms. Masters is also a very effective school leader and has also demonstrated meeting the needs and concerns when I have brought attention to them with her. She also cares for the students and is very easy to get a hold of if concerns do arise.

I can tell you for a fact that the school is on top of bullying at this school. One year, the school leader contacted me and shared with me that they caught a minor problem that was starting with a few students taunting my child, and they already took care of the problem by enforcing the necessary discipline and my child never had a problem with bullying again. Most schools, turn their heads when issues arise and nothing is done because the school leaders don't care. At Athenian Academy, Ms. Mizzi, Ms. Masters, and the teachers genuinely care and proactively handle it with great effectiveness.

If you are looking for a smaller school with attention to the child's needs, then look no further and RUN to Athenian Academy. I am so grateful that my children have been there the last several years. The leadership is very strong despite of the prior reviews. Our experience as a family with the school has been very professional with high quality treatment in dealing with our children, as well as our interactions with them as parents. Ms. Mizzi is an OUTSTANDING school leader who genuinely cares deeply for all the students. Her personal care and attention is something not seen in a typical school at all. In a general public school, most students are not given the personal attention, and the parents are usually treated with distain for even bothering to ask questions to the teachers. Not only is Ms. Mizzi an outstanding school leader, there are also numerous teachers who also demonstrate the same high quality of care for the students. Ms. Barber, Ms. Lenning, Ms. Curd, are all excellent teachers. I am grateful for this school. I am so glad that my children have been at Athenian Academy and have a wonderful support system who has been involved in my children's educational journey. It is a GREAT school with excellent leadership. Don't let the other comments lead you astray. The parents that wrote the negative comments may have other motives, perhaps their child got into trouble and wanted to write a nasty review. (which is disgraceful and grossly inappropriate).

My child started Kindergarten in August 2017 at Athenian Academy. Our experience hasn't been very good - in fact I am happy to be leaving and going to another school. While many of the teachers are kind (we had a great teacher!), it's the school's leadership that is terrible - disorganized, poor communication, curriculum does not include art and/or music, there is no discipline of unruly kids disrupting the classrooms (food/candy is used as a motivator - like training a puppy) and the no bullying policy is not followed. This school used to be "A" rated but now is a "C". Their website is a good example of how the school operates - it is not up to date (they still reflect the A school rating though they did not earn that for 2016), the principal's note is from years gone by, etc. I'll stop with this - this is not an A rated school. If you just want your child to go to school where the teachers and administration tries hard and has good intentions, this school is fine ("C" or average), but be ready to poor planning, poor communication and poor testing results for your kids as a result of this good-enough type of attitude.

My child went to Athenian from K to 4th grade. We received straight As or All As and 1B each grading semester. We ended 4th grade with very poor FSA testing scores (1 or 2) for all categories. I was puzzled how my child scored so low when we were receiving such good grades. We changed schools for 5th grade. I was afraid if we stayed at Athenian my child would get further behind. We had our first teacher parent conference and they said my child is testing in math at a first to second grade level. To confirm we signed up for Mathnasium and again they stated my child is at a first grade level. It's not my child's fault but Athenian for allowing a child to get to 5th with a 1st grade comprehension of Math. My child is struggling but working very hard to compete with the new classmates. The school received a grade C for 2016-17 school year but deserved a lower grade. No child should be left behind or be led to believe they are performing at grade level when they clearly are not. The school needs serious changes to their curriculum and school leadership. Sad to see my child struggle so much since we believed our child was in good hands at a "B" charter school. Read between the lines parents. Not a good school in my experience.

The leadership of this school is horrendous. They are focused on "expansion" and their side consulting business. Walking through the school on the school day, you can see the lack of leadership. Kids are running around during transition, no leadership in the hallways. The school leader can't meet with parents before school because she doesn't get there until after the school day starts. It is a serious failure from the board of directors, management company, and school leader. They are not capable of managing the growth in students over the last two years. I think the more recent reviews on this board are reflective of that.

It is unfortunate how poorly this school is rin and it is now reflective in their 2017 test scores. They are one of or the worst charts in Pinellas.

It doesn't take a very thorough search to see that the leadership of this school is horrible and that their attention is on expanding (which pays the former board member who runs the management company more money because it's a percentage of enrollment fees. the school leader is also a member of the management company !?). If you are thinking of sending you child here google the school and the school leaders and see what their time is really spend doing.

With all that said there are people happy with the school, so do your homework and make the best choice for your child(ren)

Poor experiences over the years. My family has experienced problems in the following areas. 1) Poor communication, 2) Very unorganized, 3) School leaders do not take responsibility for their errors and pass off responsibility to another school leader, as there are 3 school leaders, 4) Poor action plan for bullying, 5) School leader dyes hair purple to teach kids her dedication to the FSA testing process, 6) Kids get good grades but test poor on FSA, 7) Focus is on Fun not learning. Bottom line. It is a risk to send your kids to Athenian given the poor leadership and focus on academics. The school needs new leadership.

I moved my children from a public school because, I was tired of not knowing how bad they were doing until they were failing or failed already. My children got better scores in their FSAs and passed this school year learning everything they were supposed to learn. The teachers in this school really care about the students success.

Horrible- I wish I had the time to write a full review. The root issue is the school leader does not have a bachelors degree, let alone a Masters degree in educational leadership, which is the minimum requirement in the public school system- most have phd's. It all just trickles down from there. Completely unqualified to teach, lead and to lead educators. I hate to say this but a large majority of the kids are unsophisticated, emotionally immature , which leads to bullying, which the school leader to which the school leader is totally oblivious. Athenian Academy of Pinellas has gone to waste. I believed in the school when it changed locations but that has changed. There is no communication, structure, discipline, or leadership. The school claims to want parental involvement, but turn their back on you if you dont fully buy into what they do. If you question you are an outsider. The school installed their own goons in the positions on the PTSA to keep parents out of the loop. The school uses only Facebook to communicate - if you don't have Facebook, you don't know what is going on. There is no real discipline or structure anymore. Teachers spend more time maintaining order rather than teaching. In one class, a grandchild of a teacher/staff was misbehaving in class. The child was sent to grandma and no further action. The problem went through the year. Children see no consequences for bad behavior and act out more, bringing behaviors home. The school uses fundamentals from the Ron Clark Academy style of teaching. One is a token system which is a failure. Children dont care about earning tokens to buy junk at the school store. Kids dont care if they lose a token - the teacher wont be telling parents about how the child lost it. Teachers told me that they are discouraged from telling parents about bad behavior unless parents ask. The teaching Greek as a foreign language is all but gone only part of the program because the charter requires it. The focus shifted to Spanish. The real good teachers who were the strong point for the school are mostly gone. Some left abruptly in the middle of the school year early as last year. The few that remain are good, but cannot carry the weight of the entire school. Many of the new teachers dont seem to be certified. They are apparently hired on a temporary basis to avoid immediate qualification requirements because they are buddies with school leadership. They are in general, poor teachers. If a substitute is needed, many times a childs mother is asked to fill in. The school was focused on educating kids and making the school a great place to learn. Now only a few good staff and teachers are fighting an uphill battle with a majority of mediocre teachers/staff who focus only on having fun and maybe learning instead of trying to learn in a fun way. The school is no longer recommended - Im moving my children to a better school

I have a K and a 6th grader attending to Athenian Academy. I absolutely love the school and what they do with the kids. What an amazing group of teachers and school leaders. Family oriented environment, parents are very active and engaged with school activities, with a great PTA team, that organize activities throughout the school year. It is a second home where my kids and I feel safe because I know they are not only learning from the best professionals available, but they are also in a safe environment learning how to be citizens of the world. That's the point w how funds are used. Friends working together for betterment of themselves. The school leader is very nice, but I wish she would take a more assertive role and visible role by holding teachers/students/parents accountable for grades during EACH grading session. Overall school ranking at the 70th percentile is not great, and yet was mentioned during academic awards ceremony- how is that good? It's not. It's almost like the school is running itself.

Who cares how they came up with the funds. They are all a bunch of friends working together for themselves and not to better the education of our children. THIS IS NOT AN A+ school. People running the school don't have a degree in education. All I hear are complaints of administration. I wouldn't send my kids here.

Hello to everyone, I received notification that a new review was posted and had to read it. I am a parent of a child at Athenian Academy of Pinellas. I obviously do not have the answer to the comment just posted, I do not have financial info on the school. Yes I agree there are many issues however, most of them in the process of been resolved. The school has been looking for some time to relocate but this is a very lengthy process. With that said I understand why no money is spent on the upkeep of the building except for the absolutely necessary. Part of the playground was removed because it was unsafe and was not aware there still are issues with it. I am sure the staff would address the issue if mentioned directly to them. As far as the bus goes they are as well looking to purchase a new one. While the school might not have a great building I must say they have great staff, teachers, families, and very good kids. I highly recommend it :)

My son has almost completed his second year at Athenian Academy. He really loves his teachers and going to school and that's the most important thing. He's gotten the extra help with reading when he needed it. You can really tell the staff love what they do and care deeply for the kids. This was our best option outside of the poorly rated public elementary school we are zoned for. We are so happy that we were able to get into the school. Our youngest is a year out from kindergarten, but he will be going here as well. The only reason I didn't rate the school 5 stars is due to the fact that the playground and physical education areas are very small. The "auditorium" where they host plays and school events is also very cramped at this location. Rumor has it the school will be moving to another location in Dunedin however that will more than likely resolve these issues.

Athenian Academy is a small K-8 charter school. They have a strong language program with classes in Greek and Spanish. All the children, staff members, and parents are a great family oriented group where we all know each other. Kids truly enjoy the small and nurturing environment they are in. If you are looking for a school that is truly dedicated to their children we highly recommend Athenian Academy of Pinellas

This school is unorganized and frustrating for a parent. The building is old and unclean. The playground is absolutly dangerous with old and broken equipment. The school is unsafe and unsanitary for children. The school says there is small class sizes but in reality they are just as large and some classes larger than public school. Also, my child after going here still does not know any Greek or Spanish. The principal is never seen and is not qualified to be a principal. I have realized after speaking with teachers who work there that their own children do not even attend. ???

The idea of learning spanish and greek at the same time is great if they are being taught english grammer first. We delt with constant bickering and bullying, our child came home and cried every night. The children were expected to be able to write a fully developed paragraph before they knew sentance structure. The reading teacher autisim to be the same as ADD. Finally, the reading teacher told us our child was malnourished, had to many bosses (we live with my parents), not sleeping, not getting enough sleep, wasn't diciplined enough, and finally, she was neglected. Our child actually forgot concepts learned in previous grades and I had to hire a tutor two days a week to keep her on track.
