This school is actually terrible, all I experienced is discrimination here. I was constantly harassed by white kids because of my skin color, front office people dont do anything about ANYTHING they pretend to care once your parents get involved, teachers kids are privileged and put first. 8th grade had to be the worst year so far its gotten crazier ever since we got a new principal. This school is just a hot mess overall and they dont care about anyones mental health as long as the test scores are great thats all that matters. MY FELLOW BLACKS I dont recommend bringing your colored kids to this school I promise you a great middle school experience will not be had. Glad Im finally gone it was hard to go through but its finally over.

This school is brutal. The theme should be- you dont matter. Im sure this school is great if youre the top 2% but for the rest of the students it is a dog fight. Behavior problems arent dealt with, so the same students disrupt class repeatedly.

This is an elite, classist school. If your child is bi-racial, African American, or from any other ethnic background other than white, dont even bother sending your child here to be bullied by the mega rich. The kids are horrible, over privileged, and are not held accountable for anything they do or say. Racism is a daily routine, administration turns a blind eye, and teachers are touch-and-go. Some of the teachers are great others should have been let go a long time ago. Yes, they have high test scores, they have a lot of funding from all of the rich families, but if your child is not in the in crowd or considered poor they will be miserable. And by poor, I mean if your familys annual income is less than $250,000.

I had 2 children attend Martinez and one is now a practicing lawyer and the other is about to graduate UF. I was shocked to see the trolling of this high performing school. Frankly, many of the complaints I read are part and parcel of the middle school experience which is a difficult time for every child. Up to parents and students to navigate the socialization issues on an individual basis. In the end the engaged staff and challenging curriculum at Martinez prepared my students for high school and college academic success. Isnt that what a good school
Is supposed to accomplish?

The bullying at this school is extreme, and the administration doesnt do anything to support students. Its not ok to ignore bullying, especially given the current environment. Martinez is proof that SEL is a failure. This is a very unsafe environment for many kids.

Great academics and excellent music and arts departments. Admin is the best in the district. I've seen improvement/growth each year both in my student and in the teachers. The teachers really do care about teaching and preparing the students for high school. The school does fun school-wide activities that the kids seem to really enjoy. Admin and staff continue to work on making connections with the kids. Would absolutely recommend.

Martinez is such a wonderful school! From the teachers to the administration to the office staff, everyone is extremely welcoming and caring. Middle school can be very difficult years for children, but Martinez somehow feels like an extension of elementary with the same type of positive loving environment. I am so grateful to everyone at Martinez.

I'm trying to write this in a way that is the nicest way possible. I'm more of a nerdy kid, I really like math and kind of like science (looking into being a comp sci major when I grow up most likely since I already have experience with that), I overlook things and sometimes that makes me feel worse, so sometimes I write things in a way that makes them sound worse than they are or in an argumentative way, but I'm trying to phrase this in the nicest way I can lol. Also if you're going to this school, sometimes it's best not to talk about your interests if they're not in the norm to people who aren't already into the same interest. I've never had any problems with my teachers so far, but some staff are really annoying. I'm not really the type of person who likes loud noises, I'm probably on the spectrum but I've never gotten tested for that, but either way, I don't need someone yelling every period acting superior to the students. Some of the counseling is really unhelpful too. There's so much drama and toxicity that the staff just doesn't deal with. If it's the same people causing the problems all the time, they don't care, if you're not a person who gets into trouble often and you defend yourself, that will probably be on your permanent record. If you're a racist kid who does get into trouble often, there's most likely very little repercussions unless another person on the staff speaks up about it, which would be rare. If you don't defend yourself in arguments or fights though, you'll most likely end up very depressed for a while, and as stated before, counseling isn't that helpful. It's really a lose-lose unless you pretend to be someone you're not. You can say that that's just the way school is, but shouldn't we try to change that? This will be my last year at this school and are just some things I noticed so far, some of the staff and most of the students are kind of toxic, I haven't seen much school spirit, since there's nothing really unique about this school. I've participated in the school polls with my honest opinions and nothing really got better judging on the previous reviews, they're all similar to mine and all they have really done is add more policies limiting stuff we can do. Once in a while, you'll have a fun time here, but most of the time, it's pretty stale and depressing.

Don't let the good reviews fool you! Academically this is a good school but behaviorally it's horrible. There's a big "us vs. them" attitude between the elite (upper class families) and everyone not in those circles. These kids are entitled and have never been told no.
Alot of bullying and nothing gets taken seriously by teachers/administration. Teachers have directly told me that misbehavior is accepted because "kids will be kids". When I brought up concerns about documented bullying, they will victim blame your child. Other times they will tell you what you want to hear and pretend to resolve the issues but no real consequences and/or accountability are given.
Favoritism is also a big problem. Lots of double standards depending if you're part of the elite/popular or not. This school is Beverly Hills 90210 on steroids. Schools with lots of funding and good test scores do not mean better.

One of the genuinely worst schools I've been to. I had a traumatizing experience causing me to get bullied and hated by basically my entire grade and they just brushed it away due to it being the week or two before Christmas break. I was bullied for three entire years at that school until I cried to my parents enough to make them realize how much I wanted to do online school. Some teachers are good, but some are so rude and disrespectful that they do not try and help at all and blame it on the student when they don't understand a concept. The learning aspect gets its job done, but the environment is absolutely horrendous. I would rather send my own child if I have one to any other school. If the environment was better or the staff tried to handle situations better I would definitely recommend this school, but until then I wouldn't risk the mental damage on any child.

It is not the school's responsability to teach integrity, compassion and respect. There is a lot of bullying going around, both at the buses and in the school, but I blame the parents that DO NOT teach their kids any values. Parents are jerks, kids are jerks.

My daughter is an excellent student, behaves really well and its focused in academics. This school is VERY overwhelming if your kid is shy or introvert and there is a lot of bullying, agressive behavior, cussing, etc. Neither the bus drivers or the teachers can't do much if the parents don't teach values and allow their little angels to do whatever they want to and be disrespectful to both faculty and fellow students.

Staff members teach students for an approximate of two weeks than start yelling and lose there temper showed at lunch time and forget to show that leadership is important in the school. Students should learn how to be better people at school. Instead they learn about teachers putting students in punishment without a say in it.
Posted: April 30, 2019
In fact they focus on them too much. If they are smart then they wont focus on that, instead they focus on how kids with learning disabilities think of the school.

Takes up personal time and pressures students
Posted: April 30, 2019
Focuses on the lower-academic students and ignores the higher. Staff members are more focused on how the regular students act and completely ignore the fact that the athletes are doing the same thing.

I personally do not want my kids going near Martinez Middle School. The environment is terrible while the staff tries to convince students it isnt. Kids get bullied in the hallways and staff are terrible against students.

I will be graduating from the University of Florida in 2020, and attended this school from 2009-2012. This school is probably the worst school to send your child to if they are slightly above average in intelligence. They cater to the lowest common denominator. Administration is hypocritical, righteous, and condescending. Behavioral standards set for one child will be different than another child. I distinctly remember being treated differently for doing the exact same thing as another student, although this may be an issue of race.

My child is a new sixth grader. The teachers seemed to care about her daily classwork, homework, and noticed her struggles and strengths. The guidance counselor, made great suggestions. They also had a Tech Night for parents, that taught us how to navigate through Edsby. A lot of great club opportunities to choose from, especially when you are a new student.

My child was given on average no less than 2 hours of homework a night. Some nights she worked for more than 4 hours on her four academic courses! Aside from eating dinner, she literally did not have a chance to do a thing other than homework and studying most nights. I am not a teacher, yet I found myself sitting with her and teaching new concepts, sometimes for longer than the teacher taught in class! Homework should be for things not finished in class and review of things learned in class. Period.

As far as middle schools go, Martinez is a great one. My only complaint is the amount of homework given. Other than that, the teachers have been wonderful (with the exception of a couple), the principal was great (although they are getting a new one this year), moral is high and it's a good group of kids.
Posted: April 20, 2017
I would have to strongly disagree with the previous bad reviews. This is a great school with an outstanding principal. My child has been attending this school for several years now and yes the workload is high, but you want your kids to be educated and not just handed a diploma right? They have a FFA/ Agriculture program, sports (not a lot of middle schools have extracurricular sports) such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, and even flag football. The teams are quite good as well. The teachers have always been responsive and their use of technology is great. I have only had an issue with one teacher that seemed quite a bit on the harsh side at first, but I soon realized that it was just that she expected a lot more out of the kids, especially since it was an honors class.
Parents need to realize that they are the ones ultimately responsible for their own children. When the parents have a tendency to be bullies and aggressive themselves (such as trolling these sites to leave scathing reviews based on unrealistic expectations or a lack of understanding of how to be a parent......) the children find that normal behavior. While schools do play a role in shaping a child's view of what it means to be a respectful contributing member of society, it is not the school's responsibility to teach children how to behave. Instead of using your thumbs on your iPhone in between Facebook posts to make a good school look bad, perhaps parents should get more involved with both the school AND their own children?
Posted: April 20, 2017
My child has never been bullied or even seen bullying. Most of anything I have ever heard about was after school while walking home, someone grabs a backpack and run off with it or throws it in the someones yard. Again, its up to the parents to teach their children how to be respectful of others. The school only reinforces this behavior and HELPS to teach them how to be contributing members of society. If the parents are aggressive, combative, unrealistic web-site trolls, it is not the school's responsibility to counter what the child learns by observation in their own home, and it only makes it tougher on the rest of us. BE A PARENT.
Posted: April 20, 2017
Again, parents have a responsibility to their own children. Teachers have a lot of pressure on them not only from the state with the reinforcement of the "teaching to the test" mindset or you don't keep your job, as well as pressure from parents with ridiculous ideas that their child is the only one in the school and all attention should be paid to them only. I find it much more effective to monitor my child's progress through the effective tools the school offers and then when I see a problem or something that needs extra work, after speaking with the teacher, I PROVIDE the supplemental help or if it is available, request extra help from the teacher. If you think the school is a place to dump your kids and expect them to learn everything they need to know in life, expect everyone else to think that way as well. If that is the case, how much time do you think the teachers actually have to make sure 2,000 students understand everything in school with no homework or help on homework from parents? If you don't know a subject, the teachers have great ideas on where to get supplemental help online.
Posted: April 20, 2017
I don't understand "leadership is a joke" comments. This does not help people looking at these reviews and only reinforces the fact that unfortunately a lot of these websites only have comments from trolls while the people with good experiences don't feel compelled to leave reviews because there was no problems. In fact I find it useful to see that there are very few reviews on this school relative to the amount of students attending. If it was truly a bad school there would be hundreds of bad reviews, not just a few from parents with unrealistic expectations and a lack of understanding of what constructive criticism means. They feel as though this is an outlet to strike out rather than a means to inform.
As far as the leadership is concerned, this school has a great principal who is very interested in the well-being of the students, as well as a resource officer who is very approachable (retiring this year unfortunately) and a staff that has always been helpful and eager to respond. Of course, I have always been respectful in my dealings with them so perhaps this is the reason for my review being such a contrast to a few others?
Posted: April 20, 2017
One for instance....Veteran's Day. The principal takes it upon himself every year (with the full support of the teachers and staff of course!) to put on an outstanding Veteran's Day event where the school invites the veteran's and active duty military, police, fire, and first-responders to attend. They put a lot of effort in to teaching the children how to be respectful, contributing members of society.
Posted: April 20, 2017
Very approachable, use technology well, and always interested in the child's well-being. It goes with most things in life, you reap what you sow. If you are respectful and communicate effectively, you get the same in return. Even with unrealistic and ridiculous parents who feel that their child is the only one this school should be teaching (in this area there are more of those than I would like to admit), the teachers and administration have shown a lot of restraint and respect in my eyes, because they know that dealing with an unruly parent in a way that most people would REALLY like to, does not benefit the child.
Posted: April 20, 2017
Edsby is a great tool for monitoring your child's progress. It almost lets you see in real-time what assignments your child has and what their grades were for each assignment. My only issue is that a couple of the teachers seem to be slow at updating the assignments. There are times I question my child for having a zero on an assignment when it was simply that the grade took a week to be entered.
As far as one of the reviews complaining about a science project every 9 weeks.....really? One of the great things about this school is the actual education. Yes they expect more out of their students, but you do want you child to have an education right? Or perhaps you just want them to be handed acceptable grades so they can move on and move out? I don't understand the "too much work" concept. Anyone with this mindset will not be prepared for any college worth attending.
Posted: March 21, 2017
My child was bullied from day one. I reported it to vice principle and absolutely nothing was done. No policy regarding bullying was followed, instead my child was basically told to suck it up. His teachers were mediocre at best. One math teacher, supposedly practicing for 25 years, constantly yells, doesn't answer questions and doesn't make sure the student understand before moving on. This school breeds the cliques, even reinforce the cliques. I hate this school, my son hates this school. My daughter hates this school, and we are moving to another zone very soon. It can't come soon enough. If your child isn't the mouthy, popular type, who is an airhead, they won't survive here. If you have a smart, sensitive kid, protect him or her by sending them somewhere else!

I can't say enough about the damage their lack of action has caused, we are considering litigation.
Posted: March 21, 2017
Absolutely not! Teachers teach one way, that's it, too bad if you don't understand, we're moving on!
Posted: March 21, 2017
They do not do their job, they do not follow district policy on bullying, they are absolutely useless.
Posted: March 21, 2017
No character development, they encourage you to be like everyone else so you fit in instead of addressing the bullying.

This school is so over rated everything is swept under the rug my child was repeatedly bullied and when I tried to talk to the school they put the blame on him and not the group of 5 kids that were doing they are all puppets to the district most of the teachers are not helpful and put blame on the kids for everything they screw up grades and the school will only side with the teachers because they don't want their school rating to to go down I have two children at this school I try to mind my business until I have to get involved I'm not one to run up and complain for everything like some people say in their review of other people so for me to write this is a WARNING DO NOT PUT YOUR CHILD IN THIS SCHOOL. My kids are A and B students but the grafes dropped teachers helping they were nasty and not qualified to teach with the exception of two teachers they would play with his grades and lower his conduct grade for stupid things like talking mean while his work was done and one teacher had several write ups and was never fired iseverak parents complained and nothing was done its all the protect the reputation and school grade which is overrated the drugs out of control you can buy any drug in the library and supervision is horrible the pta will try to milk you dry and get attitudes if you can't give them money its been a complete nightmare I would not recommend this school to anyone

When reading the recent reviews for this school and having had two children educated there it is very easy to determine that the bad reviews were written by the same parent. From my experience at this school, when an overbearing or overprotective parent feels their child is being singled out or not being treated fairly, the parent makes a huge stink, demands to meet with administration and if they aren't able to strong arm the administration to get their way the parent then lashes out in some public forum. I have witnessed bad parental behavior first hand while in the office picking up my child for an appointment. My advice to parents who have issues with their child's teacher: 1. make sure you have an Edsby parent account so that you can stay involved in your child's education. 2. Talk to your child's teacher. They really DO have your child's best interest at heart. 3. Hold your child accountable! Your child has to WANT to take an active role in their own education. We, as parents are responsible helping to instill this behavior in our children. Don't expect the teachers to both educate AND raise your children. 4. Volunteer and participate at the school. Not just through PTSA. Ask your child's teacher what you can do to help his/her classroom. I have volunteered to come to school to help on science lab days, just to be another adult in the room to assist the teacher and students and the teachers were overjoyed and very appreciative. 5. Follow the issue protocol-- talk to teacher first, if issue is not resolved, talk to your child's guidance counselor (they can be very helpful too and can often refer you to outside resources that you can use to help your child like tutors, self-study websites, virtual classes, social and psychological services.) and if your issue is still not resolved or if you feel your concerns still have not been addressed, schedule an appointment with an administrator.
And lastly, please behave like an adult; Remember, you ARE a role model for your child.

The "clickiness" is supported... Most of these kids have been together since birth - - very proud of their money and belongings - - and so in that sense "we're so awesome" these subjects are taught... but it doesn't seem to get through to the heart. It's not ugly as in super violent and druggy - -but ugly in possibly a more vicious way.

As a military family we have seen many schools! I have no complaints about the education or programs - - some (music, specifically) are exceptional!! My struggle with this complex (Martinez & Steinbrenner) is the "clickiness" of the kids. It's the worst we've witnessed in 16 schools total (between my three kids). Beware, if you're choosing this town for the exceptional schools!! The doors to friendship are hard to open.

This school does not develop honesty, integrity, or fairness in its students; Staff members and teachers here are very hypocritical and stereotypical.
Posted: August 6, 2015
I am (unfortunately) a student at this school, and, throughout the years I have been here, have noticed countless problems with not only the staff members and teachers, but with the school itself. Just to give you an idea of what being a "student" (or should I say "prisoner") of this school is like, these are among the things I have experienced here:
- In the cafeteria, there is always a staff member yelling at you to "sit down" and "stop wandering around", even though she, along with other staff members, loiter around the cafeteria for the entire lunch period, when there are chairs specifically put in the front of the cafeteria for them to sit in.
- Numerous times whilst outside, I have smelled cigarette smoke. (Note: this did not come from any of the students.)
- In 2013, MMS had a fundraiser, and told parents and students that its proceeds would be used to build a covered walkway for the school. Two years later, this has still not been built.
- On a testing day, I had been absent for the 2 previous days, and my homeroom teacher had failed to mention the time and place I had to take my exam.
- On a testing week, my HR teacher had given us the wrong schedule for the day, so I had to ask the principal which class we had to go to next; he didn't know, and had to ask a student for this information.
- The lock was broken on the "handicapped" bathroom door, and was never fixed.
I would definitely NOT RECOMMEND enrolling your child at MMS!

Science project: my son worked tirelessly on his project. He followed all the rules. Then you see a child who barely put in any effort at all who also got an A. It makes the hard working child feel there is no point in putting in their best effort if everyone gets an A.

This school is ridiculous. There is a science project every nine weeks. The projects take the full nine weeks, so by the time you finish one, its time for a new one. They don't allow the children to do biological studies for science fair, no animal behavior or fungi. Its very limiting for a child who loves science and biology and forces them to do a project they are not interested in. The teachers do enter grades into edsby in a timely manner. So you child does their homework. Turns it in and it gets lost. You only find out your child is missing said assignment until the teacher actually enters the grade nearly 4 weeks later. The child cant remember the assignment let alone where it might be. This caused my son to earn a B in reading, the only B he has ever gotten in his life, because the assignment could not be found or replaced in time, because his teacher waited until the week before the grading period ended to put in grades. The teachers are completely hands off. They are not invested in your child. They collect a paycheck and that's it. They assign several hours of homework (thanks to common core) every single night-don't forget you still have that science project to do! No time for extracurricular activities, no fun. My kid was so stress I removed him an put him in a charter school instead. Stay away from this school. They care nothing about your kid. The principal is a mindless zombie, he doesn't support the kids or the parents. He doesn't get involved.

Not so happy. When we moved to town we were told this is a high rated school. Maybe because when students are surveyed if the teacher doesn't like what the kids have said, the kids are made to change their answers or the survey is destroyed!!! This happened to my son two years in a row at this school.

My son graduated here with Straight A and presidential award. As military we used to stationed in Germany where he attended from 2nd grade to 7th grade and he never got to the Straight A (only honor student). So, I'm questioning the over all Stateside schools. compare to the German schools, US schools are way behind. They are more concentrated in entertainment like sports and band.. where other countries have more in academics.. I'm sure my son (now playing in a band) won't be needing to play clarinet to apply for jobs later.

Martinez Middle School seems to focus to much time on FCAT instead of teaching students about life skills. The teachers seem to hand out good grades even when the students don't earn them. My student isn't handing work in on time, sometimes weeks late and still earns full credit, do they want to set the students up for failure, or do they want to teach them a sense of entitlement because that is what they are doing, there are no consequences for their actions. Is it because teachers now get paid on how the children do in school if that's the case, the next generation will consist of a bunch of adults that will think they don't have to do their part and expect to get paid for it. Some of the teachers reply to emails quickly others don't reply for weeks.

Good school socially for sure - this is not my son's first year year there and in our conversations he says he hasn't witnessed any bullying thus far, nor has he heard anyone with drugs or talking about them. With all the craziness out there, that alone would make me happy. It's in a fairly affluent area so you have many involved parents and the upkeep of the school (cleanliness, etc.) is great. The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 is that I don't believe the academics are that challenging. My son is in the most advanced classes possible and it still requires very little effort for him. Math, in particular, is a bit of a weakness. The elementary school next door is known for winning or placing at all the county-wide math competitions and yet Martinez does not do well at all. When taking Algebra 1 Honors as a 7th grader he said it was "all lecture all the time"....it actually lessened his interest and enjoyment of math. Overall I really like the school but I think there is an opportunity to improve the academics.

I signed up to get information on the different middle schools. I will be purchasing a house and I thought this would help me make the correct decision on what area I should purchase my home. I only entered this rating because it wouldn't let continue without filling that out.
