This school is genuinely so harmful towards students with mental health issues as they do not care for mental health. Are you depressed? Convince your parent not to come because you miss two days for said depression they will NOT care. They claim to do so and even have clubs but you try to talk with someone and all they do is give a scripted line and call your parents. My friend missed a few days because she was at the HOSPITAL for her mental health and they did not care and expelled her. Its truly disgraceful how they dont care for their students and all about attendance, uniform, and trying to keep a good reputation knowing full well majority of their students are struggling . Although that lies on the students behalf as well, they do not try to be involved. Do not get me started on teachers as well. Majority are dismissive, lazy, and harsh. The amount of teachers who think playing only videos and not teaching or reading the assignment without explaining (literally just reading questions and lazily repeating it in a way to seem like its different) is teaching. Only few teachers here actually care and thats a very small minority. Dont be late too youre late by a SECOND and they act like you skipped class. They have a very serious strict attendance requirement and some teachers force you to get a late pass if youre a little late. I understand some cases is on us but some people dont have proper transportation like me! And the kids- dont even get me started. You wanna avoid the genuine rude kids and disrespectful ones that think being rude to the teachers is funny? Take hard classes. Only way to avoid them is going into AP classes and some still manage to sneak in. Its so tiring being a student here and its ruined my mental health so badly that Im struggling in my classes because I dont have the energy or will to do my work because these teachers are so useless. Just to make this clear Im not failing any classes. To make sure this review is not out of anger though Im sure you can sense some of it. Anyway dont come to this school. Not worth it

As a student whos currently still at Ferguson, i would like to discuss many things. First off i want to address how badly teachers treat their students. Ive had many instances of teachers having a power trip. Even when you complain to the office, they only temporarily fix situations. Ive had a teacher shoo me away for not calming down when i was just talking to a friend. We dont even learn what we are supposed to learn, we had a spelling bee in English class and I was given a French word. Why am I getting a French word in English. If I wanted to learn what goodbye was in French then I would walk over to main building and sit in a French class. We were reading the crucible, and our test was on the Great Depression. Incase you dont know, the crucible is on the Salem witch trials. Not even the same century. It makes students feel helpless because no matter how much you complain about a teacher degrading students, there is no change. Dont even get me started on those golf carts, i was almost ran over one time and my life flashed. The birds poop everywhere. They poop on your leg, on your head, you are not safe from them. I know our school mascot is a falcon but we need to tone this down. I am like Batman and i will be back once they release me (when I graduate), for gothom. In the meantime be warned. Thank you.

Rating this school 1 star, could have been better if it wasnt for the horrible experience with the AP PreCalculus teacher Gladys Rivera. This teacher teaches off of videos in her class and get annoyed when students have questions. No book assigned to the class, exams are nothing compared to what was taught in class. Teacher has no vocation, no empathy, super rude. Does not care about her students failing her class, F after F. Now encouraging failing students to NOT show up for AP testing since she knows they will fail.
Note that for every failed AP final exam the teacher receives a bad score lowering her average passing grade therefore less bonus at the end of the year.
Totally unacceptable!!!!!

Pretty okay, teachers are mean sometimes and uniforms are very strict. The principal wastes money on useless things (golf carts) and they overcharge school merchandise. Security guards do nothing but play edm music and drive around the school, the schools feels sad and mindless..

If I could give zero, as a parent this is the worse school in Miami. The principal and her stuff are the worse. They don't offer any kind of help for your kids, they are just to receive a pay check but they do nothing at all.

Ferguson is a good school and their magnet programs are good as well. The school is pretty big but you get to have that HS experience that some others school dont offer . Like many schools out there, some teachers are great with communication and others are ok. Is better off for students to reach out to their teachers then sometimes the parents being the one reaching out depending on the situation . The schools does have a lot of activities for the students and they do help the student with the necessary resources not just give work to give work not to help at the end with what they are being taught . I do recommend the school and dont be afraid of the school size . If the school is good academically thats one of the main things aside from being a school that parroted them for college . Best of luck !

I graduated in 2015, so my information might be dated. I also write this now because it's taken years to properly dissect the sort of effect this school had on my growth. If things have changed then I recant everything and ask for you to forgive me for speaking ill of good people. However I doubt there's been much change to the central problems of overcrowding and disrespect.
There are too many students for the staff. They have some good programs but there is this culture among the administration and staff of belittling and disrespecting the students. Although I can't blame them with the amount of students they have to deal with on a daily basis, it still is not the type of place that readily fosters personal development. If you have options on where to take you kid this is not the worst one, but any young person would be better off in a smaller school with more individualized attention.
Pockets of greatness exist within the school, but being enrolled here feels like a waiting period. I feel inclined to use a comparison to prisoners and prison guards not because it is a violent or malicious place, but to illustrate that there are too many students and they treat every student as a number going through the system. You bide your time and wait to get out while the administration and staff treat you like a nuisance. There are many administrators and school staff who treat the students like chattel.
if you have options, send you kid somewhere else. If not, make sure they're enrolled in some extracurricular activity where they can grow as individuals. This school is okay, but I would have preferred going somewhere else in order to develop myself more at a young age.
three stars.
I would go lower but there are people there trying, and I'm sure they're doing their best given the circumstances that they are dealing with regarding funding, state regulation, and number of students.

Excellent school. I transferred there my sophomore year and was happy with my decision. Excellent teachers, beautiful and well-kept building, and a solid, competent administration. In my opinion, this is as good of a school as you're going to get without going private.

Like I said before, the teachers really teach, and are receptive to the students needs and concerns.
Posted: May 6, 2016
Sometimes the homework is too much, but other times is just right. So I would say that students need to learn and there is not enough time at school to absorb all of the knowledge they need so it is OK

Never had any issues of behavior or any other problems requiring intervention. John A. Ferguson has a great team of teachers and Administrators.

John A. Ferguson is a very populated school, but I have always received a good response from teachers and Administrators. Thy listen to you, and try to assist with your questions and concerns. It has been an overall great 4 years for my daughter at Ferguson!

Well I am currently in John A. Ferguson and let me tell you, our school is HUGE!! We have really good teachers here and you are guaranteed an education that is actually worth your time. The only thing that kind of sucks is my Algebra 2 teacher. He's strict. But other than that, GO FALCONS!!!

I've been to many schools such as Sunset and Felix Varela, and they were the worst schools i'd ever been to. After transferring to Ferguson 2 years ago, I've finally found a place I can call home. The teachers are amazing (especially if you're taking Honors/AP classes) and the students are friendly and sociable. I'm now a Senior, and I'm really going to miss all this school has given me. I plan on visiting even after I graduate. No Goal is Too High Where Falcons Fly :)

This school has surpassed my expectations my daughter is a junior and is in the IB strand the principal is a fairly new principal doing a terrific job and the VP's all are key components to why that school is so well run my Daugthers IB lead teacher Mrs Graham is wonderful and her assistant Mrs Suca they are the best and with out all the bragging and financial backing that other IB schools have they are doing a wonderful job so I would love to see this school win and think of how it could be put to good use by such a terrific school that doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

Love this school! Just finished my Freshman year here and it's great! All the teachers I had were great and I really love the whole academy factor The school is huge, so naturally it takes longer than 5 minutes to walk to class, but I havent met one teacher who hasn't given extra time, as long as you don't go overboard! Also, there are SO many clubs, and the uniform is very basic, but the uniform itself isn't bad, three different color shirts, polo or button-down, and two different color pants. Also, the security is really nice and as long as your not doing anything outright stupid, you'll be fine. All in all, I loved my first year, and I would suggest this school to everybody!

I am currently a junior at JAFSH.The school is just pretty bad. It is such a mission to walk through the halls, with so many students and not only that , but they give you 5 minutes to get to class. Thats not enough time, considering the amount of people. The school cares more about tardies and uniform than the actual education. Students actually prefer being absent to school than getting a late pass and serving detention or saturday school. Every year the school and administration get worse. The teachers on the other hand, most of them enjoy their job and can teach pretty well.

I graduated last year from ferguson, and let me tell you it is a great school, I loved it couldn't hope for a better school, kit has amazing extracurricular activities and teachers are really good too, the office might be little hard to work with sometimes but nothing too bad, pretty much the best high school around
