Bishop John J Snyder High School

I cannot recommend Bishop John J. Snyder High School based on our family’s experience. The image of a welcoming, faith-filled Catholic campus is very different from the culture we experienced behind closed doors.

The environment became incredibly toxic. Bullying was not limited to students, we experienced belittling and intimidating behavior from coaches, teachers, and administrators as well. Concerns were brought forward, yet very little ever seemed to actually change. There is a culture of favoritism and inconsistent accountability that is impossible to ignore. Certain athletes, particularly baseball players, appear to be held to a completely different standard than other students, and it is something students and families openly recognize.

Meanwhile, the school seems hyper-focused on minor rule violations, like whether a girl is wearing the correct socks, while much more serious issues involving bullying, theft, student treatment, and accountability continue. Students are treated more like prisoners who need to be controlled than young adults who deserve respect and guidance.

Our experience with the softball program was especially disappointing. The head softball coach created an environment that we found belittling, demoralizing, and unhealthy. A coach should build young women up, teach accountability, and help them grow, not make them dread showing up or question their worth. A parent even said it’s always been this way!?

The amount of theft on campus was also shocking, as was the feeling that serious concerns were repeatedly minimized instead of meaningfully addressed.

What bothers me most is the contradiction between what Bishop Snyder presents itself to be and what our family actually experienced. A school can display crosses, talk about God, and promote itself as a faithful Catholic community, but those things mean very little if students are not consistently treated with dignity, compassion, fairness, and respect.

Faith should be reflected in how people are treated, especially children. Leaving Bishop Snyder was ultimately the right decision for our family.

.Academically the teachers do not assist, respond to correspondence from the student or parent. Our child needed assistance academically and he has been consistently ignored. Theft and bullying are at an all time high and nothing is ever done to correc the situation. The dean of students and counselors area complete joke. It’s not worth the tuition and every year the fees go up for example they received a grant for chrome books but charged the parents an annual rental fee. The list of foolishness goes on, every child isn’t fairly represented on campus. Additionally This school is a ran by the GOP and part of Project 2025 in every aspect. Church and state are not separated here,it’s about money.

It’s a special place. Academic rigor with a laser like focus on faith. Kids are polite, leadership makes an effort to be present and know families, and the kids are pushed to aggressively to prepare for college. If your student isn’t one to thrive with structure, this may not be the school for them. A lot is expected of the kids. Kids can play sports and enjoy sports and activities.

We have been at this school
For 7 years and It has been throw a lot of changes and I’m not sure that it’s a good thing. Just the past 3 years we have started having problems.

The kids will have free periods at school , then have homework?

BJS is a tough review. The teachers are dedicated and the administration strict. Sadly, like any typical Catholic school, some kids get away with being disruptive because parents throw money at the school. As parents, my spouse and I didn't make much money and worked very hard to enroll our sons at Snyder. Our older son did not like it. He loved his teachers, but never felt like he fit in with his peers and came home crying very often. Still, he pushed through and I'm proud that he excelled in college, while many of his classmates barely got anywhere, despite a college prep education. This does not undermine the quality of the school's curriculum. Teachers always challenged the students, many whom were very spoiled and arrogant and brought it upon themselves. Our second son went later after the school had grown more and he loved it. Between both, I earned the trust of some teachers who vented with me their initial frustrations. More recently they have told me things have gotten much enter at BJS: the new incoming classes are more respectful and teacher morale has improved.

My daughter is so excited to learn. Although she has to get up at 6am to make it to school on time, she does it with a smile and a whistle. She usually is so hard to wake in the morning. On top of that she has 3 honors classes in the 9th grade and has to work hard, but she loves the community feel she gets at this school.

This is my son's first year at the school and so far, the feedback has been great. He is highly motivated by his teachers.
